"Tales from Bentonville" is a romantic story centering on the lives of high school kids. Lovers of other ages may appear, but not normally in a cross-generational sense. References to sex with under-age kids may be made for the sake of the story line. However, I feel that child molestation is a crime and should not be glorified or tolerated.

Tales from Bentonville, Chapter 86

In the days that followed Miss Charlotte's funeral, the town of Bentonville settled into a mellow summer routine. The weather was warm in the daytime, but reasonably cool in the evening. The older residents who had grown up without modern conveniences didn't bother to run their air conditioners on those days. As long as it was cool enough to sleep at night, hot weather wasn't a problem.

Kids with outdoor jobs enjoyed the fresh air and those with indoor jobs longed to be outside. Dane was doing his best to stay in the shade of his umbrella while working as lifeguard. He didn't want to over-expose his skin to the sun and he was trying to avoid tan lines. He saved his tanning time for the occasions when he and Colt could lie naked at Camelot.

In his janitorial job, Colt was longing for a few moments of freedom from confining walls and restricting clothes. But, he knew that the adult world usually did not allow the luxury of doing exactly as one pleased. And, he was growing up plenty fast. Back when he had lived with his stepfather, he had wished to be an adult as he had counted the days until he could get out of that house. Since residing with Grandma, he had enjoyed many of the carefree hours that should have occurred earlier in his childhood. All in all, Colton Johnson was currently content with his life.

On the Manson farm, Dave, Dustin, Mike, and Brent were experiencing hot, dusty days putting up hay and keeping up the regular chores. But they weren't alone in their labor. Jared was pulling his share of the load and more. Because of the mature, conscientious actions that he had taken following the big storm, Jared was increasingly allowed to assume more responsibility.

Bob had stopped banning him from driving the tractor and handling other machinery. He reasoned that Jared's reflexes were quicker than his own and that Jared could keep a cool head in emergencies. Jared was pleased with the turn of events.

Not every minute was spent in hard labor. There were plenty of breaks including some extended ones skinny-dipping in the improved swimming hole. The spring-fed creek which supplied the water remained cool enough to be refreshing and to keep teenage dicks from staying hard when they began to expand from the thrill of being naked together.

Jace had retreated back to being a young boy again. Since his brief interest in all things sexual, after being with Corbin, he seemed to have had his curiosity satisfied for the time being. Jared was much relieved because he hadn't been sure how to handle the situation. On the one hand, he didn't want to keep the facts of life from his little brother; on the other, he didn't feel right about sharing jack-off sessions with him.

Bob Manson was making a remarkable recovery since his surgery. His new therapy regimen was working miracles. If this kept up, he would need far less help for the rest of the season - at least until harvest time. He might have to reduce his summer help, but he was loath to do so. He was hiring the younger pair of boys on a part-time basis, so he didn't feel obligated to make work for them. But he would not be able to give up Dustin and Dave even when the work slowed down. They had been a god-send and he was not about to lay them off even if he had to invent things for them to do.

Joel was having a great summer because his grandparents allowed him to spend many nights at the lakeside cottage with no one there but Alex. It was kind of like living together for real. He and Alex were free to stay naked all day when they were there together. Of course, that was mainly on the weekends because Alex was busy with football camps for days at a time and Joel was continuing his tutoring schedule in Bentonville.

Unlike Colt's outlook on growing up, Joel was eagerly anticipating his 18th birthday which would happen in the fall. It wasn't that he worried about his grandparents giving up on keeping him, but he would rest easier when he was a legal adult knowing that his parents couldn't have any power over his life. He would also be in command of a great deal of money and company stock. He could, if he so desired, make his father's life a living hell. The thought was tempting.

In anticipation of his entrance into the business world, he called for a meeting of the corporation that had been formed with his boyfriend's family. He had a land acquisition proposition to lay out for them to consider. He felt that it would meet with approval because it was both a sound investment and a good deed.

The scout troop got together one night in July to firm up plans for the summer canoeing and camping trip. All of the boys were raring to go because they had had great experiences on those trips in the past.

Their meeting was interrupted by the intrusion of Phyllis Ennis (Greta's next door neighbor and general busybody).

"Good evening, Mrs. Ennis," Mr. Simmons called out.

"Don't you `good evening me' when you are doing the devil's bidding!"

"I'm sorry, Mrs. Ennis, this is not a court of honor or an open public meeting. Please state your business briefly and then excuse yourself because we have to finalize our canoeing trip plans."

"My business is to protect these young boys from evil-doers who are bent on corrupting them!" Phyllis exclaimed. "I don't want my grandson being recruited into sexual depravity!"

"Huh?" Mr. Simmons queried.

"Don't play dumb with me, Simmons. I know that you know that the Johnson boys are queer as three-dollar bills. Everyone in town knows they're faggots!"

"Grandma!" Logan Ennis shouted. "You can't talk that way about them. It's not right."

"Don't tell me how I can or can't talk, boy! You go home to your parents right now. I don't want you around these queers another minute."

"I'm staying!" Logan insisted. "Mom knows all about Dane and Colt and she has no problem with it."

"I'll have a visit with your father. I didn't raise him to be soft on homos!"

"Mrs. Ennis, we don't use those words in describing other human beings. Please do not disrupt our meeting any further by your hateful talk. I'm going to have to ask you to leave."

"Ask anything you want, but I'm going to the people who are over you and demand that those boys be thrown out of the troop. There are rules against their kind. When I get through, you'll be gone too and this whole mess will be cleaned up."

"I'll quit before I kick out my two latest eagles."

"That's fine with me! Mr. Monroe can take over.

"If Mr. Simmons goes, I go," Pete responded.

Dane held up his hand to stop the argument at that point. He looked at Colt for a sign of his tacit approval as he faced Mrs. Ennis.

"We've already discussed the possibility of an ugly scene like this. We never thought it would come from a friend and neighbor. We'll leave the troop voluntarily because we don't want it ruined for the rest of the guys. It's been great for us. We've learned many skills about how to survive and get along in this world. We've made a lot of friendships and had a lot of fun. But, we've never tried to make anyone be like us. Being gay isn't something that we chose or would choose for anyone else."

With those words, he took Colt's hand in his and walked toward the door.

"I'm gone," Trent announced.

"If they're out, I'm out," Brent agreed.

"Me too," Mike added.

"Since all of these guys are leaving, I'm out of here," Logan said.

"You can't leave!" Phyllis insisted. "I'm doing this for you!"

"Grandma, you're doing this for your own outmoded set of values. If you want to ruin it for these guys, you're doing something that I want no part of! You're ruining if for me too." Logan said shaking his head sadly.

"Don't take that tone with me you ungrateful little whelp! When I tell your father, you'll get a whoopin'!"

"Don't bet the farm on it, Grandma. Dad's come a long way from how you tried to raise him. Maybe you shouldn't have sent him to college to pick up all those liberal ideas."

Trent asked the rest of the guys to stand up if they agreed with him and a few more boys rose saying that they didn't want to stay in the troop if Dane and Colt weren't welcome. The scout leaders grinned, giving the boys the thumbs-up sign. Phyllis Ennis turned purple and looked like she was going to break a few blood vessels in her head.

"I have an idea," said Mr. Simmons. "How about we form some kind of Bentonville boys' club and do the fun things we've done in scouts? We'd have to do some fundraising for equipment because we'll have to give what we have back to the organization. But, I'm betting that we might find a benefactor or two in this town who might support a non-profit club that's also non-discriminating."

"Mr. Simmons, please don't break up the troop." Colt pleaded. "It's too late to put something in place in time to take the trip this year. Please keep it intact for the kids who are coming up. Dane and I love scouting even if the organization doesn't like us. We'll go quietly so it won't spoil everyone else's fun. We want all of the guys to stay in the troop even though we appreciate their show of support."

"I'll think about it," Mr. Simmons replied. "But right this minute, I'd like to pack it all in!"

"I'm still out of here," Trent told his two friends.

"Us too," Mike agreed while Brent nodded.

"I'm not going on the trip and I'm going to quit scouts because Grandma has spoiled it for me." Logan insisted.

Phyllis Ennis stormed out after failing in her attempt to force her grandson to go with her. She had won a hollow victory unless she could convince her son and daughter-in-law to force Logan to stay in the troop.

"Can someone give me a ride home?" Logan asked after the six guys had exited the meeting. "Mom's at church for deacon's and I'm sure dad will have his hands full with Grandma."

"We all came together in Dad's minivan," Dane replied. "There's plenty of room as long as you don't mind riding with a couple of `queers'."

"I want you all to come home with me to explain to my father how the meeting went." Logan responded. "I'll bet Grandma is there telling a distorted version of the story as we speak."

Sure enough, Phyllis's old Oldsmobile was parked in the drive of Logan's home. The other boys weren't certain that it was a good idea to challenge the old troll, but felt that they had to stand up for Logan since he had stood up for them.

If Phyllis had been fuming by what had transpired at the scout meeting, she was furious when Logan entered the kitchen followed by the very young men she had tried to "protect" him from. She began to lash out with a string of words that amounted to verbal abuse.

The boys stood there tense, but quiet until Phyllis began to run out of steam.

"Jesus said that we should turn the other cheek, but it's really hard to do at the moment," Colton began. "We have always tried to be good neighbors to you Mrs. Ennis. I don't know what we've done to deserve this kind of treatment."

"It's not what you've done, but what you are!" she snapped back.

"Mother, please shut up," Logan's father, Chuck asked quietly.

Phyllis was taken aback enough to close her mouth for the moment.

"You taught me to treat others as I would have them treat me," Chuck continued. "You said it was the `golden rule'. I wouldn't want anyone to call me those names and I wouldn't say them to a dog - even though I could appropriately call him a son-of-a-bitch. You owe these young men an apology. And as for Logan's decision to leave the troop, that is entirely up to him. I'm proud of him for taking a stand against prejudice."

As he said those last words, he squeezed his son's shoulder in a gesture of fatherly affection that he thought wouldn't embarrass his teen-aged offspring. Logan leaned into his dad as a way of saying thanks.

Seeing that she was losing again, Phyllis shot her son a look bordering on hatred as she swept out of the back door slamming the screen behind her.

"I'm sorry that Mother messed up things for all of you," Chuck Ennis sighed. "I feel really bad about her language. She used to tell me about all the nice things you two (nodding toward Dane and Colt) did for her in keeping her walks clean in the winter and all. I hope she will learn to be more accepting."

"Are you saying that you're okay with us?" Colton inquired.

"Sure."

"^Åto the point of letting your son hang with us?"

"Yes; why shouldn't I be?"

"Aren't you afraid we'll turn him to be like us?"

"Look, guys, I studied too much about genetics in science classes to believe that people choose to be gay. If Logan should happen to turn out gay, it wouldn't be because of his friends. He might want to experiment with another guy sometime, but if he is really straight he won't be changed by that."

Logan hoped that he wasn't turning a bright shade of red as he heard his father talk about "experimenting" with other guys. This was really embarrassing! But, if anyone noticed, no one gave any sign of it.

"Wow, you're as cool as Dad and Grandma!" Dane exclaimed.

Chuck smiled.

"I was in school with Colton's dad and I had him figured for being gay back then. I still hung around with him and it didn't change me any. He was a cool guy and probably still is."

Colt grinned in return nodding his head in agreement.

"Well, what are you guys going to do during the time of the scout campout? I suggest that you might plan a trip of your own and take the same route as the scouts. The river is open to everyone and I know where I can get two or three canoes and some camping equipment. You might think about it."

Logan was so excited at the prospect of still having a chance to camp and canoe that the other guys agreed to consider the idea.

Chuck invited the boys to sit around the table to discuss possible plans while he hurried over to Pizza Hut to buy them a large cheese and sausage pizza and a couple of liters of pop. The evening was turning out better than it had started!

After dropping off Trent and taking Brent and Mike back to the farm, Dane and Colt went home. Greta was at the lake and it was pretty late to fill her in on what had happened. Tomorrow would be soon enough.

The boys climbed the stairs to their bedroom where they helped each other get undressed. Then they took a quick shower before going to bed. Both got quite aroused in the process. It was evident that they would have to relieve some pressure if they wanted to sleep that night.

"I'm really proud of you," Dane whispered holding Colt's face in his hands as they lay in bed.

"Why?"

"For quoting the bible about turning the other cheek."

"Cool."

"Now, I want to get my hands on your other cheeks," Dane giggled as he quickly let go of Colt's face and grabbed his firm ass.

Colt was laughing so hard at Dane's play on words that he nearly fell out of bed. However, his giggling turned to serious moaning as he felt his cock being engulfed by Dane's warm, wet mouth. He gave in to the feeling of pure lust and pleasure. He wanted to lie there and sense every nerve ending tingle as his young loins roiled toward climax. But, he also remembered another bit of scripture that said it is more blessed to give than to receive. At the moment, he wasn't sure about the veracity of that statement, but he twisted his body around to put it to the test. As he tasted Dane's sticky pre-cum, he decided that it might be more blessed to give AND to receive.

It was all over in a short time. Colt shot first because he'd been closer by a few minutes. But, he kept working on Dane's hard tool, slipping the foreskin over his tongue from time to time. He could feel his own dick softening slightly as it remained nestled in Dane's mouth.

As Dane's breathing became ragged and his balls pulled up toward his body, Colt began to firm up again in empathy. He nearly experienced another orgasm as his lover filled his mouth with his nectar.

Dane quickly fell asleep in Colt's embrace in the afterglow. Colt was still hard. He stroked himself only a few times before coming again. He shot on both of them and smeared the smaller offering on their bodies before joining Dane in dreamland.

Author's note: I hope that you all had a good holiday season and that you continue to do so as the new year approaches. Be careful about drinking and driving and about drinking and screwing! Be safe! There's lots of bad stuff out there. My characters are mainly monogamous and were virgins when they got together. They don't have the same risks that you and I face!!!

Thanks to the following for writing to me: Don B, Al, Jim We, Tim, Carroll Vann, Luiz, Russell, Keith (about "Zeke"), Tony Chuck, Sharon, Paul W, Peo, Alastair, Ed, Gary, Buz, Jim C, Beast, Ben, Mark, Allen, Jace, and Cameron. And a special thanks to my most faithful editor, Tom. His suggestions and proofing make this a far smoother story than it would be otherwise. And, I can't forget Ed who has given me information about the scouting organization. You can Google "scouts+gay" to find out more about the policies of the Boy Scouts of America and the Supreme Court decision on their exclusion of gay kids.

Have a great New Year's Eve and an even greater 2008!

David
