Judgment Error 31 by: Chip Dyp (chipdyp@hotmail.com)

"It was a nice service," Erin said quietly. She took a sandwich from the plate and looked around the room at her friends.

"Yeah, it was," Jennifer said. She squeezed Rob's hand and looked down at Ian. "What did you think, Ian?"

Ian just looked down at his feet. "Everyone kept staring at me like it was my fault, or something."

Will wrapped his arm around Ian's shoulder and kissed him on the cheek. "So, have you heard how David's doing?"

Ian sniffled and tried to smile. "He's still in a coma. He lost a lot of blood and his heart stopped seven times while they were repairing all the damage. They aren't even allowing his parents into the room, and his dad's a doctor."

"But he's still alive," Erin said. She reached over Will and patted Ian on the knee. "That's the important part."

"Yeah."

The room fell silent as everyone reflected on the events of the past six days. School wouldn't start up again until the next Monday, time enough to clean up the school and allow people to grieve. A substitute had been hired to teach the remainder of the computer class, and the bullet holes had been patched up. But the school was still in pain over the loss of friends.

"Did you see that Stefan's parents are selling their house? They just don't feel they can stay after what Stefan did," Rob said. He took a sip of his water and looked at the table. "A lot of people think that they know that Stefan was in town."

"They didn't know," Ian whispered. "They would've gotten him some help."

"How do you know that Ian" Rob asked. "For all you know, they've been hiding Stefan since he disappeared."

"They haven't been hiding him. I believe them."

"You've talked to them?" Jennifer asked.

Ian nodded his head. "I was at Stefan's funeral."

"You went to his funeral after he almost killed your boyfriend?" Will's voice reflected the shock on his face. "I can't believe you did that!"

"He was a friend," Ian replied. He stood up and walked over to the bar where a bottle of Pepsi stood. "I wanted to pay my last respects."

"Even after everything he did to you? Everything he did to us?" Will followed Ian to the bar and grabbed his shoulder. "How could you!"

"I already told you. He was a friend. He was sick and needed help. It was the right thing to do."

Will shook his head and looked away from Ian. "You do need help. That sick twisted fuck was no one's friend in the end."

Ian turned around and stared at Will. "He was mine. And you're not one to talk about needing help."

Will stormed up to Ian, and their eyes locked. The whole room was silent as the two friends stood their ground. Rob stood up and walked over to his two friends. "That's enough," He said quietly. He wrapped his arm around Will's shoulder and walked him back to the couch. "You guys are just upset because of the funeral and everything."

"No, I'm upset because he stabbed me and everyone else at our school in the back by going to that funeral." Will sat down on the couch and stared up at Ian. "And he knows he did."

Ian didn't say anything as he poured himself a glass of Pepsi. "I did it because I don't abandon my friends. If you can't respect that, then fine. I love you like a brother Will. No matter what you do in your life, I'll always love you. I only hope that I never do anything to lose your love."

Ian walked down the hallway to his room and pushed the door shut behind him. He lay down on his bed and began crying quietly. He had loved Stefan. He didn't blame Stefan for what happened. Stefan wasn't in control of himself at the end.

Ian lay on the bed for over an hour, thinking about Stefan, David and everything in between. David and Stefan were more alike than anyone thought. They were both kind, sweet, and gentle. The only difference was David didn't have a dark side lurking beneath the surface.

There was a quiet knock at the door which broke Ian's train of thought. He rolled onto his side, so he could look at the door. "Who is it?"

The door opened and Will slowly walked into the room. "We were getting worried about you."

"Afraid I'll tie an Ethernet cable around my neck and jump out the window?" Ian asked.

Will looked down at his feet. "No, I was just... Ian I love you. Those things I said were out of line. I don't agree with you, but if that's what you wanted, then that's fine."

"It's what I wanted. I needed to say good bye to an old friend." Ian rolled off the bed and walked over to Will. "I needed to put Stefan behind me."

Will nodded. "I don't understand your reasons, but I don't have to. I'll accept them."

"Good. I'd hate to lose your friendship." Ian lifted Will's chin and gently kissed him on the lips. "Why don't we go back and see what the others are doing?"

"We're standing in the hallway, watching," Rob said with a laugh. "Do I get a kiss too?"

Ian giggled and walked over to Rob. He leaned forward and allowed Ian to plant a kiss on his cheek. The five teens walked back down the hallway and sat down once more in the family room. There were lots of things to talk about.

Ian looked around the house and sighed. His friends had only been gone for an hour, but he was already bored. He looked out the back window and sighed. His mom sidled up behind him and wrapped her arm around his waist. "How are you doing?"

"I'm all right. Just doing a little thinking, that's all."

His mom nodded and looked out the window with him. "It's almost warm enough to start thinking about filling the pool." Ian didn't say anything. He just continued staring out the window. Mrs. Reynolds patted Ian's stomach and asked, "So, what are you thinking about?"

"David. I still haven't heard from his parents. I wish the doctors would let us see him."

"If they aren't letting you see him, then it's probably for the best."

"I know. I still want to see him."

"Well, maybe you'll hear something later today."

"Maybe," Ian whispered. "Mom, do you like David?"

"Ian! Of course we like David. He's a very sweet boy."

"Good."

"Why?"

Ian blushed and looked at his mom. "I really love him. I..." Ian sighed. "I want to spend the rest of my life with him."

"If that's what you want, then it'll make your Dad and I very happy."

Ian smiled and hugged his mom tightly. "Maybe we'll even see about grandkids."

"Whatever makes you happy, baby."

"You do want grand kids, right?"

"Of course we do. Just not right now. You boys are still young and have college to worry about."

Ian smiled. "There certainly won't be any surprises if David and I have kids."

Mrs. Reynolds laughed. "No, there probably won't be." She was about to say something else when the phone rang. Stepping away from Ian, she picked up the cordless and answered.

"Hello. Oh, how is everything? That's fantastic. Just a second, I'll put him on the phone." Mrs. Reynolds took the phone from her ear and looked at Ian. "It's Mr. Cameron." She handed the phone to him and smiled.

"Hello," Ian whispered.

"Hello Ian. How are you doing, son?"

"I'm all right. Um, how's David?"

"He's come out of his coma, and is awake and alert. He's asking for you, Ian."

Ian started crying as all the built up emotions poured forth. The fact that he had very nearly lost David blew away any emotional control that he had left. His mom wrapped him up in a hug and took the phone.

"Hello, Ken?" Mrs. Reynolds said as she held onto her sobbing son.

"Is Ian all right?"

"He's been trying to suppress his emotions and they just broke through."

"Would it be all right for Ian to come up to Regina? David would really like to see him."

"Of course it would be. How is David doing?"

"He just woke up. The doctors aren't going to discharge him until the end of June at the earliest. He needs time to make sure things have completely healed and then a little time rebuilding his strength."

Mrs. Reynolds nodded, and rubbed Ian's back. "When would you like us to come up?"

"Tomorrow would be great. I'm sure the boys would like to spend as much time as possible together."

"Okay. Did you need anything?"

"No, I think we have everything we need. Would it be possible for me to catch a ride back with you on Sunday?"

"Absolutely."

"Thanks. We'll see you tomorrow. David is in the ICU, room C414."

"We'll be there." Mrs. Reynolds hung up the phone and continued rubbing Ian's back until he finally stopped crying.

"I'm sorry, I..."

"Sh. You have nothing to be sorry for."

"When he told me David wanted to see me, it all just..."

"I know. You ready for a little trip this weekend?"

"To Regina?"

Mrs. Reynolds nodded. "Uh huh. We're going to go up tomorrow and come back on Sunday with Ken."

Ian sniffled and wiped his nose on the back of his arm. "That's great." He smiled and looked up at his mom. "Did he want anything?"

"Just you."

Ian half giggled, half cried. "I guess I should go make sure I have some clean clothes."

"That's probably a good idea. I'll book us a room at the hotel across the street."

"All right."

Ian walked downstairs and into the basement, and slowly began packing. He started thinking about David again and began crying once more as he finished packing. He lay down on his bed and fell asleep, the body pillow wrapped in his arms.

"Did you call him?" David asked as his dad walked back into the room.

"Yep." Mr. Cameron sat down on a chair and tried not to smile.

"Well, is he coming?" David asked impatiently.

Mr. Cameron nodded and smiled. "Ian and his mom will be driving up tomorrow. Do you think you can wait a day to see him?"

David smiled. "Now that I know he's coming, I can. How is he doing?"

"I didn't get to talk to him for very long before he started crying. He really misses you."

David wiped a tear from his eye. "He does?"

"Of course he does. He loves you, David."

David started crying softly in his hospital bed. He had been struggling to stay awake until his dad came back with the news.

"Hey, what's wrong? Are you feeling some pain?"

"A little."

"Well, we'll have the nurse give you a little more medication so you can sleep. You're going to have a big day tomorrow."

"Yeah." David looked out the window for a second, and then turned back to his father. "Dad, do you think Ian will still love me even though I'm..."

"I think you know the answer to that question. Ian would love you no matter what."

"Yeah. Dad, I really love him, you know."

"I know. I can see it every time you guys look at each other."

"When's mom coming back?"

"In about an hour."

"Tell her to wake me up when she gets back. I want to see her."

"I'll tell her, but she won't. You need your rest so you can get better."

David winced as he wiped a tear from his face. "All right. I'll see her when I wake up. I'm so tired."

"Good. Go to sleep, son. We'll all be here when you wake up."

David nodded and closed his eyes. When he was asleep, Mr. Cameron pulled his chair closer and watched his sleeping son. He pulled a lock of hair out of David's eyes and smiled. He placed a gentle kiss on his son's forehead before leaning back. He closed his eyes and slipped into a fitful sleep at his son's side.

Ian walked in the front door of the hospital and looked around cautiously. His mom walked up behind him and placed her hand on his back supportively. "Shall we go see your sleeping prince?"

Ian smiled and looked up at his mom. "I like that."

Mrs. Reynolds laughed and followed her son to the elevator. They pushed the up button and stepped into the empty box when it arrived. "Fourth floor," Mrs. Reynolds said to Ian. Ian pushed the button and watched as the doors slid shut.

When the doors opened, the scene had changed. The main floor hadn't been overly dirty, but compared to this floor it looked like a waste dump. The floors all gleamed and there was an antiseptic smell in the air. "Which room?" Ian asked.

"Wing C, room 14."

Ian looked at the signs and headed down the hallway to the C-Wing. When they arrived, the nurse at the nursing station stopped them and asked if she could help.

"We're here to see David Cameron. He's in room 14."

"Are you family?"

"This is Ian, David's boyfriend," Mr. Cameron said as he walked up to the desk.

"So, you're the little heartbreaker David was telling me about." Ian blushed and looked down at his feet. The nurse laughed and nodded to Mr. Cameron. "Try not to make too much noise and remember David needs to rest."

"We will," Mrs. Reynolds said.

After following Mr. Cameron a short ways down the hallway, they stopped. "Here's his room. We'll just be down the hallway a little further in the family room if you need us."

"You're going to leave us alone?"

Mr. Cameron smiled. "I know you guys need a little time alone. Don't wake him up -- just let him wake up naturally."

"All right," Ian said quietly.

Mrs Cameron smiled to Ian as she walked out of the room. Together, the three parents walked down the hallway to the family room leaving Ian and David alone. Ian quietly walked into the room and sat down at the side of his boyfriend's bed.

He looked over his badly injured boyfriend and all the tubes he had leading away from his body. He didn't know what was wrong with David, but it was serious. Ian cocked his head slightly and gently rubbed David's arm. "I love you, Baby," He whispered.

After about an hour of sitting at David's side, Ian stood up and looked out the window at the gleaming cityscape. The sun was reflecting off the gold windows of the SGI building, providing a spectacular view. Ian sighed, bowed his head, and closed his eyes.

"See anything interesting?" David asked quietly.

"Nothing as beautiful as you." Ian slowly turned around and smiled at David.

"You say that to all the boys."

Ian giggled and took a step towards David's hospital bed. "I do not. I have the boy I want."

"And what's his name?"

"I think you know who it is."

"It's Will, isn't it? When I get out of the hospital, I'll challenge him to a duel for your love."

"It isn't Will. It's you. I love you, David."

"I know Ian. I love you too, Ian. Come sit down. Tell me everything that's been going on."

Ian walked back to his chair and sat down. "I'd rather hear how you're feeling."

"I'm all right. The doctors say I won't be back to normal until the end of June. Mid-July is more realistic though. You're going to have to bring me my homework so I can graduate this year."

"Are you sure you'll be up to it?"

David nodded. "I'm going to work my ass off so I can graduate this year. I want to go away to University with you."

"I'd like that." Ian looked away from David and wiped his eyes.

"What's wrong Ian?"

"Nothing."

"I may be sick but I can tell when you are lying."

"You still love me even after what Stefan did."

"Why wouldn't I?"

"Because Stefan hurt you because of me."

"That doesn't matter. Ian, I don't want you to think that you had anything to do with Stefan's actions. This isn't your fault."

"But..."

"But nothing. I want you to make sure that Will knows that too."

"I told him that you weren't mad at him."

"How's he taking things?"

"He's seeing a psychiatrist."

David nodded and squeezed Ian's hand. "That's good."

"Yeah."

"How many people did Stefan kill?"

"Including Paul's parents and little brother, nine."

"He lost his little brother?"

"Yeah. Paul is in the hospital back home. His boyfriend is helping him."

"His boyfriend?"

"Jason."

David looked at Ian in surprise, and then smiled. "I guess that makes sense. They're a cute couple."

"That they are."

"So, we aren't the only gay couple in the school."

"Nope, not anymore."

David was quiet for a few moments. "I wish you could crawl into bed with me."

"I wish I could too, baby. It's not going to happen though."

"I know."

When David didn't speak again for a minute, Ian asked what was wrong.

"Nothing."

"I'm not sick, and I can tell you are lying."

"You know I'm going to have some scars from the operations and from the bullets, right?"

"I didn't know that, but what's the problem?"

"I'm not going to be the same guy you fell in love with."

"Yes you are. Having some scars isn't going to make a difference, David. What's important is what's inside."

"Well, I lost some muscle and tissue from my chest, during surgery."

"That's not what I meant, and you know it." Ian replied with a giggle. "I meant your heart and your soul.

"Well, they did work on my heart, and I'm pretty sure they didn't find a soul while they had me opened up."

"Well, then they missed it. David, I love you. I would like to spend the rest of my life with you."

"I'd like that too." David whispered. He yawned and let out a little sigh. "This sucks. I'm always so tired."

"Well, get some sleep. I'll be here when you wake up."

David smiled. "Are you sure you won't slip into bed with me?"

"I'm sure." Ian smiled playfully and leaned towards David. "I'll give you something to dream about though."

"What's that?"

Ian stood up and popped the button on his pants. Carefully, he slid his pants down to mid thigh and let David see the Funderoos. "I wore these especially for you."

David giggled. "Thanks."

"We're not done," Ian whispered. He leaned in and gently rubbed himself against David's hand.

Slowly, Ian's cock expanded and stiffened. He let out a little moan and watched as David's eyes grew wide. When he was completely hard, he popped his erection out of the underwear and let David have a little look. "When you get better, this is all yours."

David groaned. "Can't I have it now?"

"Nope. Don't want you get you too excited."

"You're not playing fair."

"Well, you're going to have to get well and spank me. Now close your eyes and go to sleep."

David stuck out his tongue and closed his eyes. Ian tucked everything back into his pants and sat down at David's side once more.

It didn't take long for David to fall asleep, and when he did, Ian stood up quietly. He walked down the hallway and smiled at David's parents. "He's asleep again."

"Did you boys have a good talk?"

Ian smiled and nodded. "We did."

"Why don't you have a seat Ian? I'll go sit with David for a while," Mrs. Cameron said quietly. She stood up and walked back down the hallway to where her son lay.

"Ian, I want you to know how much David appreciates you coming to see him." Mr. Cameron said.

"I know. I couldn't stay away."

"If you would like, I can bring you with me when I come to see him on the weekends. Would you like that?"

"Definitely. I can give David more incentive to get well soon."

"What kind of incentive?" Mrs. Reynolds asked.

Ian blushed and looked down at his feet.

"You didn't get him too excited, did you?" Mr. Cameron asked cautiously.

"No. We didn't do anything. I just promised him something when he got home. And that's all I'm going to say."

Mr. Cameron and Mrs. Reynolds laughed. "I think we can figure out what you promised him," Mrs. Reynolds said.

"Maybe, but you'll never know for sure." Ian smiled and leaned back in the chair. He closed his eyes and thought about David some more. Everything was going to be all right, he thought as he drifted to sleep.
