Judgment Error 22 by: Chip Dyp

(chipdyp@hotmail.com)

Ian scratched his chest and looked up at the ceiling. He could hear his parents as they walked about, doing their usual Saturday morning activities. He sighed and scratched Louis behind the ears.

His parents weren't very impressed with him. He already knew that, but the main event was going to occur when he went upstairs.

He sighed. "No point in putting off the inevitable." He slipped out of bed and walked down the hallway into the bathroom. He stood in front of the big mirror and looked at himself. He smiled, and then frowned. Ian watched as the muscles of his face changed when he changed his expression. He cocked his head and looked at himself again.

"What does he find attractive about me?" he whispered. "What did any of them find attractive about me?" He scratched his belly and looked down. Ian could see his soft cock as it pressed against his tight cotton briefs. He pushed his briefs down, and looked in the mirror. "I still don't see it." Ian walked over to the shower and turned on the hot water. He needed to clean up, and the hot water would help relax his muscles.

While he showered, Ian thought about David. Although embarrassing, he was flattered that David had come to his rescue. Ian made a solemn promise to himself that he'd come to David's rescue should he ever need it. There was very little that he wouldn't do for David.

When he finished showering, Ian walked to his bedroom and pulled some clothes out of the drawer. He had just finished dressing when there was a knock on his door. So, they are bringing the confrontation to me, he thought. Ian sat down on his bed and tried to calm himself. "Come in."

"Good morning, Ian." Mr. Reynolds stepped into the room and shut the door behind him. He walked over to a chair and spun it around so he could sit in front of his son.

"Good morning." Ian watched as his dad sat down.

He didn't know what else he could say, so he kept his mouth shut. He'd let his dad direct the conversation.

"We need to talk, Ian."

"I know. I'm sorry that I started the fight at the school, and I know you're going to have to punish me. Whatever you decide will be fair."

"How magnanimous of you," Mr. Reynolds said with a laugh. "I think that being grounded for two weeks will be an adequate punishment." He paused and looked at Ian seriously, "But I think that I'll discuss it with David's father."

"Why?" Ian asked cautiously. He didn't know what was going on, and it was starting to concern him.

"Well, I thought I should ask your boyfriend's father how he punished his son for a similar offence."

"When did you find out?" Ian looked down in his lap. He was scared to look his father in the eye. Ian had wanted to keep his boyfriend hidden from his father for just a little longer, at least until David had come out of the closet.

"I found out this morning when Mr. Cameron called to invite us for supper tonight. It was an interesting conversation. He asked about previous restrictions that we had placed on your previous relationships and how we had dealt with your homosexuality."

"Oh. I take it David came out to his parents."

"I think it's fairly safe to make that assumption," Mr. Reynolds replied. He looked at his son and tried to smile. Ian could see the sadness in his eyes. "Why didn't you tell us, Ian?"

"Because David was still in the closet." It was a lame answer and they both knew it.

"That's not the only reason, is it?"

"No. I was scared of what you and mom might say. Dad, I wasn't looking for someone, but David found me and I know I love him. He isn't Colin and he isn't Stefan. He doesn't want anything from me but me."

"And he loves you?"

"I think so." Ian paused and looked at his father for a moment. "No, that's not right. I know he loves me. I knew it even before he attacked Keith."

My dad smiled and placed his hand on my shoulder. "Ian, your mother and I both love you. We won't stand in the way of your happiness. All we can do is give you our opinion."

"And what is your opinion?"

"He seems like a nice guy. But, I think that we'd like to get to know David and his parents a little better if you're going to be dating him."

"Really?" Ian asked. He stood up and looked down at his father.

"Really." Mr. Reynolds nodded and smiled at his son.

Ian took two steps forward and hugged his father tightly. "I love you, Dad."

Mr. Reynolds hugged his son back, squeezing him tightly. "I love you too, Ian."

David scratched his belly as he walked into the kitchen. He had slept well after his father had sent him to bed. "Morning," he mumbled as he grabbed a glass of juice from the fridge.

"Good morning, David. How did you sleep?"

"I had a really good sleep," David said. He smiled and sat down across the table from his father.

"A quiet conscience always helps. Did you want an omelette? There's some leftover ham and a few fresh mushrooms left."

"That sounds really good."

Mr. Cameron smiled and grabbed the eggs, ham, mushrooms, and cheese out of the fridge. "I've got a surprise for you."

"What kind of surprise?" David looked at his father cautiously.

"I invited Ian and his parents over for supper tonight. Mr. Reynolds seemed quite surprised when I told him that you and Ian were going out."

David winced. "That's because he didn't know." He looked at his father, "I asked Ian not to tell his parents because I didn't want you to know. I wasn't sure if you'd still love me if you knew I was gay."

"Oh, David." Mr. Cameron walked over to David and hugged him tightly. "I'm sorry if I ever gave you any doubt that I'd love you no matter what."

"It's all right. I never gave you guys a chance to know and love the real me."

Mr. Cameron rubbed David's back and smiled. "Well, I hope I haven't caused any problems for Ian."

"I don't think you have. Can I call him to make sure that everything is all right?"

"He probably won't be able to talk to you. He's grounded just like you are."

"I guess."

"You'll see him tonight. Now, why don't you help me make this omelette?"

David smiled and followed his dad into the kitchen. He felt closer to his father than he had in a very long time.

David paced around the living room and looked out the windows for the thirtieth time. His parent's were sitting on the couch watching him. "David, you're wearing a hole in the carpet." Mrs. Cameron said. She smiled at David when he turned to look at her.

"Why are you so nervous?" Mr. Cameron asked. He patted the couch seat beside him, and leaned back. David walked over to the couch and sat down.

"I'm hoping that Mr. and Mrs. Reynolds will like me."

"Haven't you met them before?"

"Well, yeah, but it's different now. Now they know that I'm Ian's boyfriend. I'm not just one of his friends anymore."

"Do you think knowing that you are Ian's boyfriend is going to change the way they feel about you?"

"I don't know. Ian's been hurt by the last two guys he went out with. I just want to make sure that they know I'm not going to hurt him."

Mr. Cameron wrapped his arm around David's shoulder and squeezed. "I'm sure that it's going to be all right. They'll just want to get to know you really well."

"I guess."

"I'm sure that Ian has told his parents that he loves you," Mrs. Cameron added.

"But will that be enough?" David asked. The doorbell rang at that moment, spooking David off the couch. He looked towards the door, paralysed with fear.

"We'll find out soon enough." Mr. Cameron stood up and walked to the door. Mrs. Cameron followed close behind her husband. She smoothed out a wrinkle in her pants and smiled as her husband opened the door.

"Hello," Mr. Reynolds said, extending his hand. "I'm Doug Reynolds. This is my wife Debbie, and this is Ian."

"Please call me Ken" Mr. Cameron said. "This is my wife Cindy, and I'm sure you've met David. Won't you come in?"

"Thank you."

"Pleased to meet you all. Won't you please come sit down," Mrs. Cameron said, ushering the families into the living room. "Would anyone like a drink?"

"I'll have a Caesar," Mr. Cameron said. He turned to David and Ian. "Why don't you boys go watch a little TV while we talk?"

"All right." David said. "Come on Ian". They headed to the family room.

"I hope you don't mind. We would really like to talk to you without the boys being present."

"Not a problem at all," Mr. Reynolds said. "If you're making Caesars, I'll have one."

"Did you want anything Debbie?" Mr. Cameron asked.

"I'll have a Caesar too, thanks."

There were a few moments of silence as Mrs. Cameron went off to make the drinks before anyone said anything. No one knew how to broach the subject.

"So, how are you dealing with having a gay son?" Mr. Reynolds asked.

"As well as could be expected, I would guess. It came as a bit of a shock to me. I still love him, though. He's my son, and I'll always love him."

Mr. and Mrs. Reynolds nodded. "That's the important thing," Mrs. Reynolds said. "When Ian told us he was scared that we wouldn't love him anymore. It's a common fear, unfortunately."

"But you'd think there would be signs," Mr. Cameron said.

"There might have been. But they were likely so subtle that if you weren't looking for them, you wouldn't have seen them."

Mr. Cameron nodded. "So, Ian has had a boyfriend before?"

"He's had a couple of them."

"Do you know if he's been sexually active?"

"He has," Mr. Cameron replied.

"Did you set any rules on his former relationships?"

"No," Mr. Cameron replied. "I talked to him about safe sex after we learned about his first boyfriend. He assured me that he used protection every time."

"I see."

"Were there any sort of restrictions you wanted to replace on their relationship?" Mrs. Cameron asked.

"I still think of David as my little boy, but I guess that has changed."

"They grow up so fast, don't they?"

"That they do."

"So what do you think they are talking about?" Ian asked as he sat down on the couch across from David. Neither had said anything since coming into the family room. Neither of them knew where to start.

"I don't know." David couldn't bring himself to look at Ian. He still felt guilty for spilling the beans about their relationship. "I'm sorry I told my dad that we were dating."

"It's all right, David. I think it's great that our parents know about us."

"Really?" David looked at Ian cautiously.

"Really. Is that why you're so quiet?"

"Well, yeah. That's a little of it."

Ian laughed and walked over to David. "I thought you were mad at me or something."

"For what?" David asked.

"I don't know. That was just the vibe I was getting."

"No, I'm not mad at you." David smiled at Ian and took his hand. "I love you." "I love you too." Ian sat down beside David and giggled. "God, that feels so good."

"I know."

"So, how did your dad take it when you told him you were gay?"

"Well, I sort of leapt from the car after I told him."

"WHAT?"

"I kind of leapt out of the car when it stopped at a stop sign. My dad found where I was hiding and brought me home. We had a long talk last night, and he told me that he would always love me, no matter what."

"I'm so proud of you," Ian said. He put his arm around David's shoulder and gave him a kiss on the cheek.

"Thanks. What did your parents say when they found out that you and I were going out?"

"My dad told me that he wants me to be happy, and that you seem like a nice enough guy. They are still worried that I'll get hurt, but that's typical parent stuff."

"Yeah."

"So are you going to tell everyone at school?"

"Yeah. Although I'm sure a lot of people have made the connection."

"I haven't thanked you for helping me, have I?"

David blushed. "It's all right. I didn't do anything special."

"Yes you did," Ian replied. He gave David another kiss on the cheek and smiled. "It was a very brave thing."

David giggled. "Thanks."

"I wish I didn't have to rely on you and Rob and everyone else to protect me."

"Hey, it wasn't just Keith, it was him and his friends."

"I know, but..."

"But nothing." David said firmly. "I won't let anyone hurt you."

"Thanks, but it's okay. I don't think I'll be getting into any more trouble."

"Better not or my parent's might think you're a bad influence on me."

Ian giggled. "Well, we can't have that. We all know that you're clearly the bad influence."

David laughed. "Right. I'm definitely the bad ass in the relationship."

Ian smiled and sat back. "I just thought of something. The next time we go to a dance, we'll be able to dance with each other. I've never been able to dance with a guy before."

"Neither have I, but do we have to wait until the next dance?"

"What do you mean?"

David stood up and walked to the stereo. He grabbed a disc off the shelf and pushed it into the CD player. "Would you dance with me?"

"I'd love to." Ian stood up and walked over to David. "How do you want to do this?"

"What do you mean?"

Ian smiled. "Who's going to be the girl?"

"The girl?"

"Never mind." Ian stepped up to David and wrapped his arms around his neck.

"Oh, the girl," David whispered.

The opening strains of Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton filled the room. David wrapped his arms around Ian's waist and pulled him close. Ian shivered for a few moments before he relaxed in David's arms.

Together, the two boys continued to dance as the music continued. It felt so right to both of them. Mr. Cameron walked up to the door and watched his son dance with his boyfriend for a few moments. When the music ended, he cleared his throat and smiled. "It is suppertime, boys."

The boys jumped back as if shocked. "Uh, we'll, uh..." David stammered.

"I'll see you boys in a moment." Mr. Cameron walked away and smiled. David had looked so happy in Ian's arms. Any doubts that he still had about the relationship, faded.

"Wow, um. I guess we should go wash up." David reached down and tried to adjust himself as inconspicuously as possible.

"Something pop up?" Ian asked. He peeked over David's shoulder and smiled. "I was beginning to wonder if you had a pen in your pocket."

David blushed and turned away from Ian. "It's not funny. My dad catches us dancing and I'm as hard as a rock."

Ian giggled. "You're so cute."

"I try." David said. "C'mon, let's go wash up."

After supper was finished and the dishes were done, the men and women split up and went their separate ways. The women went to the family room to have an after supper drink, while the men and the boys went to the living room.

"We need to have a little talk, boys," Mr. Cameron said.

"About what, Dad?" David asked.

"To be blunt, about your relationship," Mr. Cameron said. He took a sip of his Ice Wine and leaned forward. "We want to talk with you about... your relationship."

"Anything in particular?" Ian asked.

"Safe sex, privacy, dating, and a few other things," Mr. Reynolds said. "We are doing this together so that the rules are the same for both of you."

"Sounds fair," David said.

Ian nodded in agreement and looked at his father. "So, what do you want to talk about first?"

"Let's handle the big one first," Mr. Reynolds said. "Let's talk about sex."

"We know we can't control you boys, and if we were to try, you'd end up sneaking away to have sex in vehicles or somewhere else. We don't want that." Mr. Cameron said.

"It's not safe for you boys to be out having sex in public in such a small city. It's not safe in the big city either, but let's stick with the here and now." Mr. Reynolds added.

"What we're saying is we'd rather you wait a little while before you have sex."

"That sounds reasonable," David said.

"When we are ready to have sex with each other, we can do it in our rooms without hiding?" Ian asked.

"Well, we'd prefer if you guys were a little discreet. You're our sons, but I'm sure I speak for Doug when I say we'd rather not hear or see you guys having sex."

David and Ian both giggled. Their fathers smiled. "All right." Ian said. "I can't speak for David, but I don't see us looking to put of a show for our families."

"I have to agree with Ian." David said. "When the time is right and both of us are ready, we'll be discreet."

"That's all we ask," Mr. Cameron said. "Now let's talk about safe sex."

"Before you say anything, can I interrupt?" Ian asked.

"Go ahead," Mr. Cameron replied.

"Let me just say, that when David and I have sex, it will be safe sex. We will use condoms, and we will practice safe sex techniques. I am certain that David is clean, and I know I am from previous STD and HIV tests, but it doesn't matter. Right now, the only sex I am comfortable with is safe sex."

"That's good to hear," Mr. Cameron said. "What about you, David."

"I agree with Ian. It's gotta be safe sex or it's no sex for me. Someday, when Ian and I are both ready and willing, we may forego protection, but not right now."

Mr. Reynolds nodded and smiled at the boys. "You are both very mature for your age."

"I agree." Mr. Cameron said. "If you boys ever need condoms or other things of that nature, please just ask. I'm going to bring some home from the office for you both, just in case you don't want to ask."

David and Ian both giggled and blushed. It was embarrassing to talk about sex with their fathers.

"All right, let's move on to privacy," Mr. Reynolds said.

"What do you mean, dad?"

"Ken and I both want you to know that we will respect your privacy as we have before. If you boys are in a room with a closed door, we will knock and wait for a response before we come in."

"So nothing has changed then?" Ian asked.

"No, not really. There is one thing that has changed. If your marks start dropping, then we may start restricting the time you spend together," Mr. Cameron said.

"Why?" David asked.

"Because, although we know you love each other, your school work is important. We want you boys to graduate near the top of your class so that you can go to university. We will not allow your relationship to drag down your marks," Mr. Reynolds said. "This is not because you are gay, this is because you are our children, and seeing that you get a good education is part of our job."

"How much of a drop?" Ian asked.

"It's a subjective thing, Ian. Ken will make the judgment about David's marks, while I'll make the judgment about yours."

"I guess that's fair," David said. "I can see your point."

"I have only one more thing that I'd like to talk about, before we let you guys go. Did you have anything else, Ken?" Mr. Reynolds asked.

"I just wanted to talk to the boys about dating."

"That's all I had left too, why don't you start off."

"All right." Mr. Cameron smiled at the boys and thought for a moment about what he wanted to say. "Boys, we want you to be happy, but we also want you to be safe. While a lot of the people living in this city would be willing to accept you for who you are, a few others aren't quite so open-minded."

"Keith, for example," David whispered.

"Yes, Keith and several of his friends. Let's face it boys, you are in the minority. We just want you to be careful."

"Are you saying we can't go out in public together?" Ian asked. He stared at his father, awaiting the answer.

"No, we aren't saying that. Boys, we just want you to be safe."

"Define safe." Ian said. He continued to stare at his father.

"All right. We'd prefer if you boys went on dates with other people. Maybe double dates with your friends, that sort of thing."

"What if we want to be alone?" David asked.

"Then we want you boys to stay in populated areas. A well-lit restaurant, that sort of thing."

"So, you're restricting where we can and can't go together?" Ian asked incredulously.

"No, we are not doing that. Ian, I love you. I don't want to see you hurt again."

"Well, that's what it sounds like." Ian said.

"Ian, I'm not telling you where you can and can't go. If you and David want to go out for supper, then go. If you want to see a movie, go."

"Then what are you saying?" Ian asked. He couldn't figure out what the hell his father was trying to say.

"Let me have a go at this Doug. Ian, what we are trying to say is that we don't want you boys to make yourselves targets for the bigots in this town. If you are in a restaurant, there are people around. If you are at the theatre, there are people around. Bigots are less likely to do something if they have an audience."

"Oh" Ian said. "I guess I see your point. We'll be careful."

The boys and their fathers talked for about another hour before the Reynolds went home. David smiled that night as he lay in bed. Things had gone better than he had thought they could. His father had not only accepted Ian, he was beginning to like him. He closed his eyes for a moment when he heard a quiet squeaking coming from his parent's room. "That randy devil," David whispered. He rolled onto his side and fell fast asleep.
