A Day in June, Chapter 5

The day finally came when Jade could have the casts removed from his hands and wrists. He was like a kid waiting to open presents on Christmas morning.

"I wonder how my hands will look. I hope I'll be able to use them okay. When are they going to call my name? We've been here 10 minutes already!"

"And since we arrived nearly 15 minutes early, it still isn't time for the doctor to see you," Devon reminded him, with a grin.

"Okay, so I'm a little eager."

"A little?"

"Devon..."

"You know I'm teasing you. I don't blame you for being anxious. I can't image how frustrated you've been."

"And I can't image how you've survived all this time, doing so many personal things for me."

"I've been rewarded in many ways," Devon grinned, wiggling his eyebrows.

Jade was about to make some suggestive comment in return when his name was called, and the two of them followed a nurse's aide to a small examining room.

A medical assistant removed the casts a few minutes before the doctor was scheduled to examine Jade's hands. Jade couldn't wait for him to come in, moving his wrists and flexing his fingers as much as he could.

"Wow, they're a little stiff, but they still work!" he exclaimed.

"That's wonderful!" Devon agreed. "They may be pale from being out of the sun for so long, but they really look great. We have the rest of summer to work on the color."

There was a slight tapping at the door before the doctor came in to check on the outcome. He was as pleased as Jade and Devon were.

"I'm going to send you down to the lab for a couple of x-rays to make sure that everything is as good as it seems. It won't take long. When they finish with you, come back here and we'll view the images together."

The whole process didn't take long because it seemed to be a slow day at the clinic. Soon, Devon and Jade were having a good look at how well the bones had knitted.

"These look so good that I think you might be spared the arthritis some people have later in life from serious breaks. Your healing is really remarkable – almost miraculous. I have to confess that I didn't expect the results to be this great. Of course, you're young and naturally you heal quickly, but this is amazing. We can begin therapy as soon as you feel up to it."

"Let's start tomorrow!" Jade exclaimed.

"Where would you like to go for lunch to celebrate?" Devon asked.

"I know it's dumb, but I want to go to Hardee's and get a big greasy Angus burger and feel the juices run down my chin and onto my hands."

"Hmm... That stirs up some sensuous images in my mind," Devon grinned.

"I'm talking about juices from a hunk of hot ground beef," Jade said.

"So am I," Devon's grin widened, "well, maybe not ground."

"Jeez! What am I gonna do with you?"

"Oh, I'm sure you'll think of something."

With their Angus Thick Burgers and fries, they went outside to sit at one of the tables to enjoy their food in the fresh air. Jade was thrilled that he wouldn't have to be fed at long last, but he would sort of miss Devon's touch.

Though his movements weren't perfect, he did manage to eat his lunch without Devon's help. He had just finished his last fry when he got a look of shock on his face.

"What's wrong?" Devon asked with concern.

"Come close and let me tell you," Jade said in a stage whisper.

When Devon got very close, Jade continued.

"I recognize the voices of two men at the table behind me. Please pretend to take my picture and make sure you get them in it."

Devon got out his phone and took several shots from different angles so that any casual observer would assume he was taking pictures of Jade only. When he was finished, he showed them to Jade, and the two of them walked slowly to the car.

"Can we go to the sheriff's office right now?"

"I think I'll email the best pictures to Sgt. Davis immediately and tell him where we are. If those guys leave before we hear from him, we can at least get the license number when we see what car they get into."

"I recognize the pickup and I'm copying down the number right now."

"Okay, I'll take a pic of it as soon as I've sent these."

"I know we can't get involved in trying to apprehend them," Jade admitted, "but I'd like to follow them at a distance if they leave before the law gets here. I'd love to see them arrested."

They didn't have to decide whether or not to tail the men because a police squad car pulled into the lot a minute later. The two officers walked toward where the suspects were sitting, but the men got up and hurried to their pickup. The officers pursued them, but couldn't apprehend them before they were speeding out of the parking lot.

The police wasted no time in chasing after the suspects, and Devon decided to follow at a safe distance if he could. However, a traffic light turned red just as Devon got to the intersection, and he didn't dare run it. By the time it changed to green again, the vehicles were nowhere to be seen.

Instead of trying to pick up the trail, Devon drove to the county sheriff's office.

"Gentlemen," Deputy Davis greeted them. "I was hoping that I'd get to see you in person soon. Mr. Matson, it's great to see that you've gotten rid of the casts. May I shake your hand if I don't squeeze too hard?"

"Of course!" Jade smiled, happy to be able to perform the ritual of politeness.

"Please come with me; I have something to show you in my office."

"Wow!" Jade exclaimed as Davis held up an artist's sketch.

"We're working closely with the city and campus cops on a rape case and you've just given us the break we were looking for. Perhaps you remember a couple of attacks on coeds this past winter. One of them got a reasonable look at one of her attackers and an art student who works for the police department came up with this drawing as the girl described the perp. When you guys sent the photograph today, I immediately saw the resemblance and relayed it to Detective Faraday. He had two men on lunch break not far from Hardee's, so he dispatched them quickly. I assume you may have seen them."

"They got there just before the suspects jumped in their pickup and sped away," Jade informed him.

"I heard they were in pursuit of the men. We should get an update soon. Whoa, I think it's coming in now!"

Because there was great cooperation between the local police and the county sheriff, the news came in to both departments simultaneously. The preliminary report said that the men had tried to elude capture by speeding down a county gravel road where they evidently hoped to lose the police car. However, what they lost was traction, and the pickup had careened off the road and into a ditch, coming to rest against the bank of a small creek. The men hadn't been wearing seatbelts and the vehicle was so old that it didn't have airbags. Both men were seriously injured. Ironically, the driver's hands seemed to have been badly broken in the crash.

"That's eerie," Jade exclaimed, gently rubbing his left hand with his right. "It's almost like some kind of divine retribution."

Devon nodded.

Jade's summer school session ended a couple of days after the casts came off. He had hoped to take his final exams in the same manner his classmates did, but his therapist felt that he wasn't ready to write for a sustained period of time, as he'd have to do for the essay parts. So, the grad students who were administering the exams allowed him do the multiple choice parts with a pencil and had him speak his "essay" into a recorder. That way, the professors could judge what he had said, firsthand.

Jade was well prepared and confident. He began with an outline of what he planned to cover so that if he ran out of time, at least his teachers would know where his thoughts were headed.

As it turned out, he managed to finish each test either on time or with a few minutes to spare.

His bright smile expressed his triumphant day when he came out to where Devon was waiting in the car with the top down.

"I take it you're still up to going to the beach." Devon stated.

"Definitely! I want to lie in the sun with you in as little clothing as I can legally get away with."

"That's what I was hoping to hear. I packed a picnic lunch for supper, but we can eat it anytime you're hungry. Did you cram before your last final or eat like you should?"

"No, Mother, I didn't skip lunch just because you weren't there to check on me," Jade teased as he got into the passenger seat.

"I'm sorry; I'm not trying to control you. I guess I can't get used to the idea that you don't need me so much anymore."

"I'll always need you, Devon," Jade reassured him with a peck on the cheek after making a quick check to see if anyone was watching. "I shouldn't have said it smart-ass like I did. I really appreciate it that you care about my welfare. It's been years since anyone looked after me like you have."

Being at the beach for the first time since he'd found Jade, Devon had vivid memories of that day in June. Although the recollection of Jade's bruised and broken body still haunted the back roads of his mind, Devon smiled at the lithe, nearly naked guy who lay beside him. He would be forever thankful that he had consumed too much soda on that day and hadn't stopped to pee when he should have.

"Whatcha thinkin'?" Jade ask, studying Devon's bemused expression.

"I'm thinking of how fortunate I am. Do you have any idea how beautiful you are? And on top of that, you're polite and smart. How did I get so lucky?"

"Jeez, you're embarrassing me. I'm none of those things. I'm an awkward little half-breed with average intelligence and a body that could use more exercise."

"Where did you ever get such an inaccurate picture of yourself?"

"Humph! Inaccurate? I wish you were right. I've grown up between two worlds. Other Native American kids called me whitey' and white kids had names for me like dirt-bag,' douche-bag,' and breed.' I got picked on a lot because of what I look like. Even some of my teachers thought I wasn't clean because of my dusky coloration. It wasn't until high school that I found other mixed-race kids who accepted me as I was. I'm not sure if they liked me or if it was just that they thought I was lower than they were. I still can't understand what you see in me."

"Didn't I list several of your awesome traits a couple of minutes ago? I'm totally crazy about your face and your body. You skin color is one that half the people in America, including me, would die for. I appreciate your charming personality, and I'm thrilled to have found a man who's my soul-mate." Devon said, his eyes glistening with emotion.

"Oh Devon, you make me feel like a prince instead of a frog," Jade sighed as he propped up on one elbow.

Devon didn't even check to see who might be looking their direction before planting a kiss on Jade's surprised face. For several seconds, they looked into each other's eyes with adoration before Jade broke the spell by saying, "last on in is a rotten egg" as he sprinted toward the lake.

Devon soon reached the spot where Jade was standing, waist deep, and their "battle" began. They played around, splashing and attempting to dunk one another like a couple of teenagers.

They took the opportunity, of being nearly submerged, to feel each other up without anyone seeing it. When they emerged from the water, their skimpy bikinis clung like a second skin, doing little to hide their assets. More than one pair of eyes took them in with envy or lust or a combination of both.

Back at their towels, Devon asked Jade to lie down in the prone position. He carefully applied lotion with a 45 SPF to the parts of Jade's body which were darker, and a 10 to areas, like his wrists and hands, which had been hidden away from the sun for so long. He slid the waistband of his Speedo as close to his crack as possible and applied a little 10 there also. He wanted to even out Jade's tan.

"Now, you lie face down and let me return the favor," Jade requested.

"Yes, Mother," Devon quipped.

"I'll give you, `Mother'," Jade grinned, giving his lover a swat on the butt.

He spread number 10 lotion around to cover all of Devon's exposed skin. When he got to the top of Devon's suit, he slipped his well-coated middle finger between Devon's cheeks.

"Damn! You're a naughty boy!" Devon gasped in surprise.

"Yes I am. What are you gonna do about it?"

"I may have to give you a spanking before I put you to bed!"

"Yes! Please do," Jade smirked.

Neither of them dared to get up again for quite awhile due to the erections they were attempting to hide. Eventually they went soft enough to run into the water to cool down again.

They moved into the shade to enjoy their picnic around 6:00. Devon had packed deli sandwiches, chips, fruit, and cranberry juice cocktail to drink.

Jade had an excellent appetite. He was obviously enjoying the fact that he could feed himself. He frequently glanced in wonder at how his hands moved in response to his mental commands. Something he had always taken for granted now had a new fascination for him. Life was brimming with miracles!

When Jade flashed a mischievous grin, Devon knew something was up. Seconds later, he found himself reclining on his towel with Jade feeding him grapes, one at a time.

"Sorry, I don't have the manual dexterity yet to peel them," Jade joked.

"I don't care! It's really cool to be pampered."

It was well before dark when the men began their drive home. As they approached the sign for the "parking only" rest stop, Jade asked Devon to pull in.

"This is the place, right?"

"Yes, but I'm not sure it's a good idea to stop."

"Please. I need to face my demons so I can destroy them."

Devon reluctantly acquiesced. He experienced a sinking feeling in the pit of his stomach as he neared the spot where he'd first laid eyes on this sweet guy.

"Please take my hand," Jade requested.

Hand in hand, they approached the wooded area next to the parking lot. When they reached the place where Jade's broken body had been left, he turned his eyes heavenward and spoke.

"I am whole in mind, body, and spirit," Jade pronounced. "I am the best and the happiest I've ever been! I am beautiful in the eyes of my lover. What was intended as a cruel act of pure evil has been turned into a new and wonderful thing of joy and beauty. I thank you Great Spirit for sparing my life and for sending me Devon who is my savior and my soul-mate. Please grant us a long life of happiness together."

Then he faced Devon, wrapped his arms around him, and gently kissed him on the lips. They stood there several minutes, embracing and kissing away each other's tears, not in the throes of physical passion, but in tender compassion. It felt like a sacred moment.

After they'd showered and dried off, Jade sprawled on the edge of the bed with his butt facing the ceiling and said that he was ready for his spanking.

Devon playfully swatted his cute little bubble butt trying to make a smacking sound without hurting him in any way.

"I promise I'll be good," Jade howled.

"How do I know you're serious?"

"I'll suck your dick to prove it!" Jade giggled.

"You'd probably do that anyway."

"Yeah, I probably would. I love your cum."

"As I recall, your HIV test turned out to be negative yesterday."

"Yes."

"Then I get to taste your juice for the first time ever!"

"If you're sure you want to."

"Believe me I do!"

It seems that a number of parents with gay children are beginning to see that the position of their churches is hurting innocent people.
