Chapter 8

"Shit, Chris, hurry up," Kiesha hissed, pulling Christian's arm in a vice-grip. She led him through the crowded school halls and around a corner to a nearly empty stairwell. He looked down at her expectantly.

"What could be so important?" Christian asked.

"I got a letter from Mannie," she said, whipping out a neatly folded piece of paper and shoving it under his nose.

"He writes you all the time what's the big deal?" Christian asked, taking the letter from her hand and unfolding it.

"The big deal is that he wants to get back together," Kiesha whispered. "Not exactly back together, I guess, since we never were together technically, but he said all the crap that I was wishing he would say. You know, like I love you and there's nobody else for me and I miss you so much I'm dying inside."

Christian scanned the letter quickly, taking in the way that Mannie had poured his heart out to Kiesha. He also noted the fact that Mannie was coming back to town in less than three days on a two-week leave.

"Fuck," he whispered, then paused. "Have you told him about Reggie?"

"I haven't had time," she nearly yelled. "I've only been with Reggie for two weeks. I didn't get up the nerve to tell Mannie about him yet. Chris, what am I going to do?"

"Fuck," Christian repeated. He ran a hand through his hair. A few months ago, he would have told her to ditch Mannie, but that was before he found out that there was more to him than what everybody could see.

"Have you told Reggie about him?" he asked suddenly and she shook her head and proceeded to chew on her thumbnail nervously, eyeing him as if she expected him to come up with the answer.

"I don't know, Kiesha," he exclaimed when her big, doe eyes locked on him. She whimpered and whirled in a frustrated circle, reverting back about a decade.

"You're going to have to choose," he told her. "It could be a lot worse. You've got two guys who want you. You just have to choose the one you love."

"I love them both," she told him.

"The one you love the most then," he replied. She bit her lip and stared at him. Her eyes were filled with tears.

"How can I hurt Mannie like that?" she asked and Chris let out a deep breath.

"You're that much in love with Reggie?" Chris asked and Kiesha nodded.

"Yeah, nobody's ever treated me the way he does," she said quietly. "I mean, I've had guys who liked me, but Reggie...he loves me and I know it. Have you ever had a guy who made you happy just because of the way he looks at you?"

Christian smiled down at her, feeling the knowledge that Wade loved him that much zing through to his toes. "Yeah."

She grinned broadly. Then, her smile fell.

"I can't even get a letter to him before he gets here," she said.

"Would you really want to tell him in a letter or over the phone?" Christian asked and she shook her head.

"So, what are you going to do?" he asked.

"I'm going to have to tell him about Reggie, of course," she said. "I guess, I'll just sit down and tell him. I'll need your help."

"What can I do?" Christian asked, wanting out of the situation.

"Can I tell him at your place?" she asked. "It's always private there and I need you around for moral support."

Christian nodded.

Wade sat up in his bed and stared at his alarm clock. 1:30 am. He blinked a few times and scratched his already mussed head. He wanted to see Christian. He rubbed at his eyes tiredly and looked out of the window at the dark night silently. He wanted everything that being around Christian could do to him, the warm, quivery feeling in the pit of his stomach. He closed his eyes and he could feel Christian, smell his distinct scent lingering in the air. It blew his mind.

He quietly slipped out of the bed, a broad and muscular apparition in saggy gym shorts, shirtless. He tiptoed over to his closet and rifled through it noiselessly. He dug out a pair of jeans and a sweatshirt. He shoved his legs and arms silently into the clothing, his heart pounding in his chest. He decided to skip socks, grabbed his sneakers and his keys off of his dresser.

In minutes, he was standing outside of his parent's house, scratching his head at the dilemma of his mother's car parked behind his in the driveway.

"Fuck it," he said, pocketing his keys and setting out on foot. For once, he was grateful for the five-mile jogs the football coach made the players participate in. He jogged down the dark, tree-lined street quietly in the direction of Christian's house.

When the two-story came into vision, his heart sped up in his chest. He grabbed a few rocks from the side of the road and crept silently around the side of the house until Christian's bedroom window was in view. Praying silently that he didn't break any windows, he lightly tossed the first rock against the second floor window. It took six rocks before the curtain in Christian's room moved slightly. Wade stood on his toes anxiously.

Christian appeared a few moments later, his blond head a perfect disarray. Wade smiled broadly, waving his hand back and forth. Christian opened the window and peered down at Wade.

"Wade?" Christian asked in a sleep-filled voice that cause the blood in Wade's veins to pulse heavily. "What the fuck are you doing?"

"Come down," Wade hissed in a stage whisper. Christian stared at him for a few moments, then seemed to accept the wierd situation.

"Meet me in the back," Christian whispered.

Wade treaded through the slightly wet grass until he stood on the back patio. He stared quietly at the door, waiting for Christian to appear. It was a few minutes before Christian slipped out of the door, pale in the darkness, having thrown a sweater on over a pair of striped pajamas. Wade grinned as Christian crept close to him.

"What are you doing here?" Christian asked, a half-smile on his face. Wade grabbed him around the waist and pulled him closer, pressing his lips against Christian's. He felt as if he were coming home. When the kiss tapered off, Wade buried his face in Chris' neck, inhaling the scent he had woke out of a dead sleep craving.

"God, I love you," Wade said against the soft flesh. "I had to see you. I just woke up and I had to see you." Christian's arm came up and he wrapped his hands around Wade's neck, smiling. His insides were on fire with the knowledge that Wade was telling him that he loved him.

"You're insane," Christian told him as they held on to each other. "But I love you anyway." Wade smiled, pulled back a little.

"Let's go to your spot," Wade said, eager. "No way I can sleep for awhile."

He took Christian's hand and led him, half dragging, in the direction of the woods behind Christian's house. He found the big tree by memory and sat at its base, pulling Christian down with him. Christian sat in front of Wade, his longs resting on either side of Wade, his chest nearly pressing against Wade's. Wade leaned forward and covered Christian's lips with his own, invading Christian's mouth with his tongue, pressing and dispelling the desperation inside of him with every tiny movement.

Christian pulled back, stared at Wade in the slight glow of moonlight, Wade's face looked ethereal, as if it were luminescent, angelic.

"I can't believe we're here," Christian said.

"I love you so much," Wade said reverently.

"This is where I came, Wade, after that trip to the museum," Christian told him quietly. "I climbed the tree and hid and I told myself that I would never come out again."

"I wish I had come after you," Wade said. "I wish I was right behind you. It eats me up inside how much I hurt you."

"It doesn't matter anymore, Wade" Christian told him. "None of that matters as long as we're together now."

"I'll make it up to you," Wade told him, teary-eyed. "I'll make it up to you every fucking day if I have to."

"You don't," Christian said, pulling away to look Wade right in the eyes. "It's over. It happened and we can't change it, right? So, why should we let it hang over us like this? I love you and you love me and that's it. No more making it up to me or trying to prove something to me. It's just us now."

Wade nodded, pulled Christian closer, kissed him.

Jon slammed his locker shut and threw an arm around Wade's shoulder.

"What's going on, man?" he asked and Wade got the biggest grin on his face. Still, he couldn't say what was going through his head. I sucked a nice, big cock for the first time this week. I've got the best boyfriend alive and I'm on top of the world. For some reason, he didn't think Jon was up to that kind of openness.

"Not much," Wade said. "What about you?" Jon shrugged and looked down at his feet. Wade knew something was wrong then. Jon was never at a loss for words or in the least bit morose about anything in life. Wade stopped walking and stared at him.

"Seriously, Jon, what's wrong?" he asked and Jon stood there awkwardly for a moment, then pinched the bridge of his nose.

"I got that scholarship to State," Jon said. "Full ride. My dad's psyched and the newspaper called and everything. I'm this close to playing college ball for a Big Ten school. Do you know how close that puts me to actually having a halfway decent chance to play in the NFL?"

"Damn, Jon, that's amazing," Wade said in an awe-filled voice.

"When I got the call this weekend, I was so fucking stoked, Wade," Jon said with a small smile. "I was so keyed up I stayed up all last night, sweating."

"So, what's the problem?" Wade asked.

"Shannon got into Yale," Jon said. "She found out this weekend, too."

Wade stared at Jon quietly.

"So, it's NFL dreams or Shannon," Jon said.

"You don't have to make that choice," Wade told him. "You guys can visit each other and spend the holidays together here."

"That's what she said," Jon said, his voice quivering slightly. "Do you think I could ask her to give up Yale for me? Hell no, I wouldn't do that to her. But I can't live without her. You know we've been together since the second grade. I don't care if the sensible thing to do is to try a long distance relationship. I don't want to try anything with Shannon. I can't afford to try, I've got too much invested in this. I mean, I would rather shovel shit for the rest of my life if I have Shannon to come home to."

"Shit, Jon, I know that Shannon has dreams of going Ivy League and all that, but what about your dreams?" Wade asked.

"Shannon is my dream," Jon said and his voice was unlike Wade had ever heard it before. There was a finalty to it that resounded inside of Wade. It was the devotion that he had always wanted to show Christian but been too afraid to.

"Before you make any decisions, I think that you ought to tell her," Wade said. "She might not want you to throw away your dreams either."

"I don't want to put her in an awkward position," Jon said.

"Isn't that what relationships are about?" Wade said. "Awkward positions and all that. Compromise and committment and stuff? Talk to her about it and tell her every thing about it. Then you can both make a decision together. That's the right thing to do."

Jon smiled at him, slapped him on the head.

"You are a fucking relationship guru, Harrison," Jon said. "No wonder Tiffany's running around here happy all the time."

Wade's smile slipped at just the mention of Tiffany. He couldn't shake the odd, creeping feeling inside of him every time he was around her. She would look at him with those trusting, innocent eyes and he felt like the biggest asshole alive. What would she say if she knew how he felt about Christian? What would she do if she ever found out that he got hard at just the thought of Christian's dick in his mouth?

"What the fuck put that look on your face?" Jon asked, suddenly observant and critical. Wade wiped all expression from his face and looked away from Jon.

"What?" he asked, but Jon shook his head.

"Every time I mention Tiff, you are all smiles," Jon told him. "What's going on between you two?"

"Nothing," Wade tried to sound as casual as he possibly could.

"Here we go with the lies again," Jon said, crowding Wade back against a wall and peering into his face with a direct, piercing gaze. "You should know by now that if you lie to me, I'm going to figure it out."

"Alright, I'm lying," Wade admitted honestly.

"Why are you lying?" Jon asked quietly. Wade looked around, debated fiercely in his mind for a moment, then gave in.

"I cheated on Tiffany," he said, his face flushing a deep red. He felt false saying it. He didn't feel as if he has cheated on Tiffany. It was the other way around completely.

"You WHAT?" Jon exclaimed incredulously, backing away and whirling around in shock. He approached Wade, who was leaning against the wall as if it were a life raft.

"When?" Jon asked.

"Monday," Wade responded.

"With who?" Jon demanded to know.

Wade was silent for a long moment. He took a deep breath.

"Christian," he said, his voice almost inaudible and Jon looked as if he was ready to burst with the news.

"I knew it," Jon hissed, his eyes intense as he stared at Wade. "I fucking knew that he was in love with you."

"How?" Wade asked, his voice hoarse.

"I don't know," Jon said, shrugging. "Something about the way he looks at you. Like he's starving or something...and the way you are when you're around him. I've never really seen you happy the way you were with him...or the way you are when he's near us. You love him, too."

"Yeah," Wade said, his voice raspy. "Since the fifth grade, maybe even before then, I don't know."

Jon stared at him for a long moment. "You are the least likely person anyone would ever guess could be gay," Jon said, with a lopsided smile. "So, don't get mad when I say this, but I kinda already figured out you were gay and I don't really give a fuck."

"How?" Wade wanted to know.

"No guy worth his salt would go out with Tiffany Taylor for over two years and not be aching to get between her legs," Jon said, then paused. "What are you gonna do?"

Wade shrugged his shoulders, shook his head.

"I don't know," Wade told him. "I'm going to try not to hurt anybody too much and I'm gonna do whatever it takes not to lose Christian. I mean, everything that you say about Shannon, how much you love her, how you wanna spend the rest of your life with her and all of that? That's how I feel about Christian."

"What about Tiffany?" Jon asked. "How do you feel about her? Do you like women at all?"

"I like women, I'm just not attracted to them," Wade said quietly. "I love her like a sister. I would do anything for her. Anything but lose Chris."
