Leave over, I was back on board the U.S.S. CRIMSON DAWN. Shane had decided that he would head back with me, spending the remainder of his leave cruising the bars that lined the San Diego shores. I on the other hand threw myself back into the swing of things. I was getting schooled on board to be an engineer while working as an air traffic controller. The job was one that I enjoyed and gave me every available opportunity to work with the best and best looking of Navy as well as a few Marine personnel. I knew I had to be careful but if you were ever a gay man in the service, then you know that sometimes the desire outweighs the risks and besides, I couldn't see myself taking things any further with any of my crew members-though I could dream couldn't I. Being back on duty took my mind temporarily off of Marcel and my feelings for him. After that night in his car, I didn't go back to see him nor did I speak to him again before I left. My father knew that something was wrong but for once, and boy was I grateful, he kept his distance. Lil on the other hand practically beat the shit out of me to get the story. "And you told your new best friend Shane before you told me? Thanks a lot!" "Come on Lil, you know it's not like that. It's just that Shane was there ok, I was gonna tell you and I did." At that she had given up at being mad at me and drained me for details. As expected she sided with Shane and told me that I was stupid for pushing him away. "Pushing him away? You make it sound like he was after me." And the look she gave me told me to quit while I was ahead.

Then again, maybe my mind was not completely off of him. And those times that I had a free moment to myself I found a quiet corner of our 'music room' and put on my favorite CD and listened to my favorite song:

Up and down that lonely road of faith I have been there Unprepared for the storms and the tides that rise I've realized one thing, how much I love you And it hurts to see, see you cryin' I believe we can make it through the winds of change God is great indeed If you believe, in the ever life Yeah we gotta Make some sense of the piece that's not defined And if you just hold on, I wont let ya fall We can make it through the storms and the winds of change

Though I walk through the valley of darkness I am not afraid Cause I know I'm not alone

And if the wind blows east, would you follow me And if the wind blows north, would ya stay your course And if the wind blows west, would ya second guess And if it blows to the south, would you count me out And if the sun don't shine, would you still be mine And if the sky turns grey, would you walk away Would you say I do, if I say I'll be? And walk this road through life with me You know I love youuuuuu

On this lonely road of faith On this lonely road of faith

If you don't know it, it's Kid Rock's Lonely Road Of Faith. I don't know why I was drawn to that particular song but I knew that whenever I needed something to mellow me out, that would do the trick. And of course, it always did but afterwards, I couldn't get the words out of my head.

After my third long-term deployment of thirty-two weeks, we docked at a harbor in NYC. This just happened to be Fleet Week and Navy as well as Marine personnel were going to be in and out of ports, opened to the public. I was glad for the change of scenery especially since I hadn't been to NY before. Before my coming here I was promoted from Petty Officer 3rd Class to Petty Officer 2nd Class. This provided me with more perks than I had had before and I was planning to use them every opportunity I had. Likewise, so had Shane so we both had reasons to celebrate. We were still in uniform so 'proper conduct' was expected but we were gonna make it a point of duty to enjoy this trip to the fullest. First stop was as expected of all tourist, Times Squre-42nd Street. We took the subway from the seaport and headed uptown. To say that we were ogled would be an understatement. Women were looking at us like we were the last pieces of meat at a buffet and the men, oh the men were just as the bad. I couldn't imagine straight out flirting like this back home and neither could Shane by the way he kept on blushing. "Damn, I'm moving to NY as soon as I'm discharged, it's the place to be." And it was. I had never seen anything even close to what I was seeing now. Openly gay couples walked hand in hand, kissing and cuddling not to mention a few getting down and dirty and the great thing about it was that no one seemed to take notice. It was as if they considered it ok to be gay-Damn! We Mississippians were way behind in our thinking. At an AppleBees in the city, we decided to eat and were lucky enough to get ten percent off of our meal just because we were military. And I had to admit that at that moment I felt damn proud to be serving. "Can you believe this?" "Not really, but I think it's starting to sink in." And it was. As we waited around for our food at least three young ladies made their way to our tables to start conversations. All very beautiful but unless they were men posing as women, I wasn't interested and by looking at Shane trying to keep his blush down, he wasn't either. But boy were these New York women persistent, "You guys look so good in those uniforms. You should join us." Announced the perky blond in the green strapless dress. "Thanks ladies but we'll pass tonight. We got to head in early." "Well too bad but I'm gonna leave you with my number. Call anytime, day or night ok." She wrote her number on a napkin and seductively pushed it into my pants. "Thanks." I barley managed to stutter out. At that she leaned in and kissed my cheek. When she left Shane burst out in a fit of laughter and described back to me what had just occurred. "I wish the men were that persistent." "They are." When I heard the voice it instantly connected but reason prevented me from believing that it could be who I thought it was. I turned around and saw him decked out in his finest. Shane sprung up and saluted, I on the other hand was paralyzed to move or speak. "At ease sailor." He replied still grinning at me.

HATE TO LEAVE A CLIFFHANGER BUT IT MIGHT BOOST MY RESPONSES! LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK ENJOY!
