Tactics
Chapter 3

The doctors say it was quick and painless.  I would have to disagree.  I saw her in her last hours.  I saw her breath thick with fluid.  I saw her being pumped with pain-deadening morphine.  I saw her turn pale and lifeless when her last breath came forth.  I saw all of this.  And not a tear was shed, not a frown was made.  What was wrong with me?  Why was I not crying?  It was unknown.  I didn't have a clue.

Shane was there for me throughout it all.  He was there at the hospital when she died.  He was there with me when I ate dinner, lunch, and breakfast in the café.  He took walks with me.  He was there.

But my grandmother's life ended, bringing about the destruction of my last grandparent and the destruction of which I felt so close.  I love her, more than my father.

§§§§§§§§§§§

Dressed in a suit I sat on my bed, still unbelieving.  There was nothing that was more devastating.  But still no tear.

"Tylen?" Shane said cautiously as he entered the room.

"Yeah," came the whisper of a response.

"Can I come in?"

"Of course."

He entered the room and sat on my bed beside me.  Silently he placed his hand on my leg, not as a sexual sign, more an `I am there' sign.  Still looking forward, I placed my hand on his, gesturing, `I know.'

"I love you," he said simply

"I cannot believe she's gone.  Forever.  What am I going to do without her.  I know it seemed like I wasn't close to her, but I was.  I loved her, Shane, and now she has been pulled away from me."

"I am here for you!" he shook me.  "I am here," he said in a whisper.

"I know."

"Come on...the visitation."

"I really don't want to.  I want to be strong.   I don't know if I can."

"Nobody is expecting you to.  You are allowed to feel sad.  You are allowed to cry."

"Call it a personal preference."

§§§§§§§§§§§

The visitation was quiet.  There were a lot of people there, but it was quiet.  Unlike anything that I could describe.  There was an air of sadness, but at the same time there was also an air of love.  People that I didn't even know came and saw my grandmother in her coffin.  Eventually, I would have to go see her.  Sometime was now.

I slowly went up to her, cautiously.  I don't know why I was slow; I guess I was deep in thought.  Shane was there, somewhere, sending his support.  It, however, wasn't enough and I started to cry.  This wasn't just a soft cry, tears started to stream from my eyes.

"Grandma, I don't know what to say to you that will suffice.  I mean, you have done so much for me, you have loved me, and accepted me.  You have just...just...done so much.  I don't know what to say.

"God, please, please, accept her into your arms.  Love her, and take her into your arms."  With that I walked to the back of the church and sat down.  There I cried.

"Tylen?  Tylen, I love you."  I knew that voice.  Shane sat next to me and without reservation put his hand on my knee.  I love him. There was a reception afterwards.  I didn't attend.  Instead I went home, and Shane followed me.  We went to my room.  I laid on my bed and curled into a ball.

She was really gone. With tear streaked eyes I fell asleep.

§§§§§§§§§§§

"Tylen?  Tylen?  Are you awake?"

"Yea mom," I slurred.

"Two things, are you ok? And why is Shane holding you in his arms?"

"No, and ummm."

"Hmmm," Shane mumbled, "love you."

`Well that pretty much locked my life in stone.'  "Mom?"

"Shh, baby, its ok."

"Mom," I started to cry, "I'm sorry."

"For what?"

"Tylen, what's going on?" Shane again, mumbled.  "Oh my God."  Shane detangled himself from me in an instant.  "Oh, my God."

"Shane, its ok, I guessed already."

"And you're ok with this?"

"Yes."

"Mom, what time is it?" I asked her.

"Twelve o'clock midnight."  I raised my head slightly.  "Shh, go back to sleep."

"Shane?"

"I told you I don't care. We can talk about that later."

"Mom, I love you."

"Yea, love you," Shane said sleepily.

§§§§§§§§§§§

"You are right below me."

"Ha, you're wrong, I am right next to you," said Shane, scaring the shit out of me.

"Well, I was close."

"That is the first time you were ever close.  Every other time, it has been right on, now you are close.  Isn't it every pupil's wish to surpass his mentor."

"Ahh, but thou hath not surpassed me."  I took a leap from the branch to the nest and sat in a lotus position.  "Try that."

"I wouldn't dare."

In one bound I got out of my stance and flipped to the lower branch.  "Come join me?"

"How the hell do you do that?"

"The same way that I hid so well, practice."

He walked out onto the edge of the limb.  "You forgot one part.  Risk."

"Be careful, I don't want my newest possession broken."

"I assure you, I am not broken.  I don't think the plumbing will be either."

"Is that a come on?"

"So much so it's stupid."

"I love you too."  With that, like a flying squirrel he took a leap and landed with a thud on the branch above me, he hung on for dear life as he slipped from it.  So much for flying squirrel.  More like clumsy chimp.
