Nurse and the Patient, Part 27

Jonathan opened the door and met Glenn Maxwell face to face.

"Hi, Glenn," he greeted. "Please, won't you come in?"

The lawyer smiled. "How's it going, Jonathan?"

"Lance is waiting for you in the living room. Let's join him."

Jonathan led the man out into the living room where Lance was waiting.

Lance greeted the lawyer. "What's going on?"

Lance stood to his feet and extended a hand. "Thanks for coming by, Glenn."

"I take it you have news to share?" Jonathan said.

Glenn opened his brief case and took out some papers. "I do have an offer to put on the table for you," he said.

Both Jonathan and Lance took a seat on the sofa. "We're listening," Lance said.

"I've completed my review on everything and anything that's connected with the Smyth family, as well as the company. I've compiled it all here in this report."

Lance took the folder the lawyer handed him.

"I would like you to look this over. Take your time, read it thoroughly and then give me a call. I have put an offer, a settlement if you will, out there for you to look over and perhaps consider. If you're not happy with it, then, of course, we'll go a different angle. Which, by the way, this same offer has been sent over to Ty Bennett's office," he added.

"I will read this," Lance assured the lawyer. "Still, how about you give me a short version of it now?"

Glenn was silent for a moment. Finally he said, "There's no way in hell I can give it all to you in `short version' form, as you refer to it; however, I will say this. Sam Thompson has pulled funds illegally from your company for years and had them sent to an overseas bank. I have included a financial statement in the file you're holding detailing the info in full. I can prove it, and trust me; it's enough to send the man up the river for more years than he has left on this earth. He and Agnes Doughty have been working together for years, and together, the two of them have banked enough money that could last them the rest of their lives."

"And I'm assuming they are just going to walk away with it all?" Jonathan asked quietly.

Glenn shook his head. "No way in hell. What I've done is take everything apart they've put together, schemed, stolen from the company, however you want to phrase it, and that's where the offer comes in. I've put together a deal to offer Sam Thompson and get him out of your life, Lance. He will have nothing ever again to do with Smyth Oil or any of the Smyth family and assets."

When Lance was quiet, Jonathan asked, "Is that what you want, Lance; to let the man walk away from the mess he's created for so many years?"

"I'm not sure what the hell I do want," Lance finally spoke. "Part of me wants him to get the hell out of my life and part of me wants to smear his face in the mud."

"Here is what I would suggest," Glenn said. "The two of you read my file and discuss it over. I'm sure Ty will be in touch as well just as soon as he's had a chance to read his copy. See what the three of you come up with and get back with me; we'll go from there," he ended.

Lance stood to his feet and said, "Sounds good to me, Glenn. I appreciate you dropping by with the file."

Glenn shook his hand and said, "I know it doesn't seem like a fair shake to you, but honestly, I feel that when everything is all said and done, things will work out for the best. One thing to remember is this: it doesn't matter a damn what we offer, if the District Attorney doesn't play along, well, then it will be out of our hands."

"Is that a possibility?" Jonathan asked.

"Anything is possible," the man assured him.

Before Glenn Maxwell walked out the door, he turned and said, "Oh, and one other thing. I have sent this same paperwork over to Sam Thompson's lawyer as well."

Lance couldn't believe his ears. "Are you fucking serious?"

"Sorry, but I had to. Ty Bennett's office put that on the table from the very first. I had no choice."

Jonathan placed a hand on Lance's arm. "Guess that put you in an awkward situation, Glenn."

"Like I said, I had no choice. At the same time, Sam's lawyer has been told there is no guarantee the deal will fly. That side knows it's up to you, Lance, and they've been told that no matter what we may decide, the bottom line is what the DA wants to do."

"Sam's been around for a hell of a long time," Jonathan reminded the lawyer.

"He has. So has the crime he's been committing as well," he reminded. "Remember, this didn't just take place yesterday. Not even a year ago; it's been going on for almost thirty years, looks like to me. Just read the file," he said and left.

Jonathan and Lance returned to the kitchen and took seats around the table.

"We might as well get this over with," Lance said.

As he opened the file a look of determination appeared on his face. "Let's see what the bastard has been up to."

The two men spent the rest of the afternoon reading all of the facts put together by Glenn Maxwell.

At different times Lance would draw out a long breath, followed with, "The fucker's crazy." He was referring to the man he had believed all of his life to be his father.

"He is a piece of work," Jonathan agreed.

When they had finished reading all of Glenn Maxwell's notes, Lance looked across the table at Jonathan and said, "Can you believe this? It appears that Sam has been screwing the company for years."

"Don't forget, he had the help of Agnes Doughty," Jon reminded.

"The two of them certainly deserve each other."

The telephone chose that particular moment to ring. Lance picked it up. "Hello," he greeted the person on the other end.

"Ty, how's it going?" he said.

In his ear he heard, "I guess you've had time to read the file that Glenn Maxwell brought to you?"

"I have. Jonathan and I both have," he added.

"What do you think?"

"Truthfully, I think the fucker needs to be sent up the river. Do you think that will happen?"

"I might as well tell you, Lance; I have spent the afternoon in the DA's office. He has read the file as well."

"And what's his take on the shit?"

"He wants to take Sam's ass to court."

"Then, by God, let's do it."

"We're already on it. I have a warrant in my hands, and I'm on my way just as soon as I'm off the telephone."

"To arrest Sam?

"That's right. The last time I talked with Sam Thompson, he told me he was staying for the time being with Agnes; until he can find himself another home."

"Then do it. Nail that son of a bitch."

"I'll be in touch later this evening to let you know how things go. Bye, Lance."

Jonathan watched as Lance ended his phone conversation. The man whom he loved with all his heart suddenly broke into a big smile. "Ty Bennett's on his way over to arrest Sam."

Jonathan hurried across the room. "Are you okay with this, Babe?"

"Hell, yeah, I'm okay with it all," Lance quickly assured him. "The bastard has made my life miserable for as long as I can remember. It's about time his ass pays for all the shit he's caused. When I think of the life my mother must had living with him, it makes me sick to my stomach."

"Well, hopefully things are going to change now. Are you ready to take over a company the size of Smyth Oil?"

"I must admit, the thought scares the shit out of me. It won't be an easy task, not with the way Sam treated most of the employees."

"I'm sure Tony Miller will be a big help to you," Jon reminded.

The rest of the afternoon dragged for the two men. Time seemed to have stopped completely as they waited to hear something from Ty Bennett. However, just as the sun was disappearing from the sky, the telephone rang for the second time that day.

It was Ty. "Can you guys come down to the station? I have some legal matters I need to run by you; also some papers for you to sign, Lance."

Lance assured him they would be right down, and they left immediately for the police station.

Once there, Ty greeted them and took them back to his office. He said, "Okay, here's what has happened. Everything went the way I expected it to. We found Sam at Agnes's home and brought him down to the station. I read him his rights, and, he was booked."

"I would love to have seen the look on his face," Lance said to the police officer.

"He wasn't' too surprised, I don't think," Ty said. He was quiet for a moment, and then he said, "However, I need to warn you; as soon as Sam can go before a judge for arraignment he will most likely be out on bail. I'm pretty sure he won't be considered a flight risk; the bail money will secure that fact. That's how things normally run," he ended.

"How soon will that be?" Lance wanted to know.

Ty shrugged his shoulders. "Can't say for certain; could be as early as tomorrow, depending on how quickly his lawyer can obtain a time to see a judge."

Jonathan who had remained silent until now, said, "And in the mean time?"

"For now I would advise you guys to go home and wait. I'm sure Glenn Maxwell will be in touch with you soon."

As Jonathan and Lance were leaving, Ty said, "Oh, and you didn't hear this from me, okay?"

At their nod, he said, "Once Sam has been released make sure you have no contact with him at all. Period," he added with an emphasis on the word.

"Trust me, I wouldn't care if I never saw his sorry ass again," Lance declared.

As they were leaving the police station, Lance said, "I know it's getting late, but I would like to drop by Edith's home for a few moments."

"I thought you might," Jon said giving him a smile.

Some time later they walked up the stone steps to Edith Baxter's home, and Jonathan rang the old fashioned door bell.

They could hear foot steps inside, and they waited for the woman to greet them.

"Who is it?" she called from behind the door.

"Lance and Jonathan."

"Oh, my!"

They listened as the heavy lock made a clicking sound. The door was suddenly opened, and they stood face to face with Lance's grandmother.

"What a lovely surprise," she greeted. She held the screen door open for them to enter her home. "I'm so happy to see the two of you."

Both men greeted the woman with a warm hug, and she invited them to take a seat on the sofa.

"What brings the two of you out this time of night?" she asked.

"We just came from the police station," Lance told her.

Edith took a seat across from them. "Has something happened?"

"Sam's been arrested," Jonathan said quietly.

The old woman's eyes opened wider, and she said, "Tell me about it."

Lance clasped his hands together, and looking at his grandmother, he said, "Well, there's not a whole lot to tell; yet, any way. They went to Agnes' home this afternoon and arrested Sam. I guess the normal procedure, according to Ty Bennett, is that sometime in the next day or so Sam will go before a judge for an arraignment, and after that, he will most likely be out on bail until his court appearance. And, I guess that depends on whether or not he actually does go to court. I understand there is going to be an offer made to him."

His grandmother looked startled. "An offer?" she repeated. "What sort of offer?"

"Basically, Sam may be given some sort of settlement and then ordered to just disappear," Lance told her.

Edith Baxter sat up straight in her chair. "I don't think that old thief should be given anything, disappearing or not," she declared.

Jonathan asked, "Just what would you like see happen?"

"Nail his ass," she said adamantly.

Lance felt a grin forming on his mouth. "We do think alike, Edith," he said.

"He should be made to pay for all the hell he's caused," Edith continued.

"If it's any constellation, Edith, I feel sure that when all is said and done, this will go to court," Jonathan assured the old woman. "With all we read today they have on Sam, I can not see the DA dropping it all for an offer."

"I certainly hope not."

"I guess there's nothing else we can do except wait until we're told what happens next," Lance decided.

"Have you been back to the Wilson home?" she asked.

"Not since the three of us were there last," Lance answered.

"Mr. Wilson seems like a fair man," she said. "I think he will be a big help to you; help you understand more about your father."

"Between the two of you, I plan on learning all there is to know about Carter Wilson," Lance told her.

It was getting late, and Jonathan pointed to the clock on the mantle. "We need to let this lady get some rest," he said.

He and Lance stood to their feet. They each gave Edith a hug, and then Jonathan said, "Edith, I want you to promise to be careful."

"About what, Jonathan?" she asked.

"Well, if and when Sam Thompson is back out on the street, he might decide to give you a visit."

"Why would he do that?"

"I'm sure he realizes where a lot of the damaging information came from," Lance said. "Please, promise to be careful."

"I will be fine," she assured them both. "Always have, always will," she said and gave them a smile.

At the door they gave her another hug and Jonathan said, "You lock this door and keep it locked," he ordered.

"Young man, I have lived in this house almost eighty years; trust me, I couldn't be safer. Now, go home, worry warts, and get some rest. Just promise to keep me up on everything."

They assured her she would be the first to know any thing they knew and left the house.

As they walked toward the car, Jonathan felt a shiver go through his body.

"Are you cold, Babe?" Lance asked him.

"I just don't feel right about this?"

As they got into the car, Lance asked, "Feel right about what?"

Jonathan shook his head. "I can't put my finger on any particular thing." He looked out the car window and his eyes settled on the front of Edith Baxter's home. "I can't help but worry about your grandmother."

"You think we should take her home with us?"

"We probably should, but you and I both know that wouldn't fly. She feels she's safe in her home, and no one, not even the two of us, is going to change her thinking."

With Lance at the wheel, they headed for their own home, each entertaining their own thoughts. They were both concerned about the old woman, but for now, they had to believe no harm would come to her, that, as she had put it, she would be perfectly safe.

Lance made the drive back to his home with Jonathan sitting quietly by his side. They had no clue of the nightmare that was about to take place, and afterward, they would blame themselves for allowing it to happen.
