FiRE iSLAND BiKiNiS 08 WriTten by T. Chase McPhee

^o^

Even though Eric hadn't been a stranger in the Evans household for long, he did feel awkward, showing up at the front door of the beach home. Knocking, not too loudly, he almost whispers, "Anyone home?"

With blazing thunder, Thor comes to the door, barking and barking and barking...

Coming to his aid, Jay rolls right into the foyer, first calling off Thor, then saying, "You don't have wait for someone, Eric," he bounces opens the door, allowing Eric to enter, "just come on in!"

Searching mainly for the reason he didn't want to come right in, Eric checks, "Are you sure you called off your dog?"

"Sure. I'm, like his master now, so Thor listens to me," Jay replies.

"Right," Eric is still leery of maybe getting a leg chewed off, "um, like what happens if I come in and everyone is not dressed properly?"

In thinking `everyone', a dilemma arose, Jay thinking about how sweet Jeffry has been to him, yet Jared promising a job for Eric. Though, with Eric's disappearance and Jared not saying anything about it, Jay asks, "Have you talked to Jare lately?"

If Jay had waited a few minutes, it would have come out, easing his mind, Eric saying, "You mean about the... don't take this wrong, the babysitting job?"

"Um, yeah," Jay felt, like the cold tiles on his ass, tingling sensation, not from a sexual rendering, but rather nervous, not sure hot it would sound coming from him, so refrained from speaking about the position. His fear was wrapped around how Eric was going to feel about losing a job he never really possessed. Instead, he would let Jared do his bidding.

"I'm going to have to turn it down."

Opposite reaction, instead of relieved, Jay says, "You can't!" Realizing what his gut reaction told Eric, he amends it, "I mean, if you have to... you have to?"

It showed, Eric relieved, "Thanks for being so understanding. Truth is, I found out, certain jobs, I can get scholarship money just for working at them, especially if it pertains to a field I am majoring in, that's why," Eric hesitates for a minute, "this isn't the last you will be seeing of me!"

Pleased of how it turned out, Jay asks, "Um, that's good, because I've lost enough friends over the past year."

Catching the tail of the conversation, Jared walks in on them, "Didn't I explain why that is, bro?"

"Yeah, I know, people come and people go and I'll be making plenty of friends this summer," Jay says the whole thing, like old news not getting any better.

Because he wasn't there, right on the spot, after the knock on the door, Jared asks, "So, Eric, have you mulled over what I told you about the position at the store?"

Right off, Jay jumps on his brother's words, "Position at the store? Hiding more stuff from me Jare?"

"Like, oh my god, Jay! I didn't mention it, because we all have been busy talking up other topics this morning?"

Eric excuse himself past Jared, "Um, I think I'll see if there's any left over coffee?!"

Waiting for Eric to clear the doorway, Jay rolls right up to Jared's thighs, "Okay, so there's no one but you and me, Jare. Want to start explaining? I mean, you yourself said the business is split half and half in mom and dad's will? You always stressed how, I was your partner. Don't you think I should know what's happening?"

Grabbing a stepstool, left by one of the workers, Jared sits his tush on it. Rarely did he ever get upset, but more showed feelings of pent up emotions, raising his voice. However, with the great love he has for his brother, like now, Jared could never feel hate, nor anything resembling it, "Listen, you've been through a tough time this year... and last year, and I haven't immersed you in store business, because I want your mind to stay clear, getting your life back in gear."

"I see," Jay stops, then starts in, "but even though there's been some hot guys to follow around the house, there's not much really to do," Jay replies, cool and calmly.

"I had a feeling that would happen. I know, before the accident, other than high school, surfing with Jake was your biggest attraction, but now you have to look towards other things to monopolize your mind?"

Allowing his arm to slip down, off the armrest of his chair, Jay's fingertips touch fur, realizing, "I've got Thor?"

"Great, but it's not like he can play chess or Parcheesi with you?"

Darting in and out of reality, it's been a part of Jay's life, remembering what he could do and now can't, coupled with memories of him and his brother, "Yeah, remember who the Parcheesi-master was!"

"Still is," Jared replies. "All joking aside, you have to find things which you can do now and not something which requires..."

"I got you."

"What about your drawings?" Snapping his finger, Jared says, "Remember you drew the Parcheesi board to scale and I couldn't tell the difference?"

"I've been doing a little more of that," Jay replies.

"When?" Jared was wondering.

"Since I got bored last week. I've been drawing surfboard designs of boards that I remember seeing. I don't remember too much and since we don't have internet right now..."

"I'll make that my priority, see if we can get some `internet cafe' connection," Jared pulls out a pad, one he used to write when walking the stores, writing down his thoughts.

"Can you write down to tell the architect about my `surfboard' room?"

Sitting back, like it's an abominable request, Jared bucks it up, turning a page on his little pad, "Architect," he says it as he writes it, "room for surfboards," adding his own notes, "which can double as a room for Jay to draw..."

"Okay, I get your message, bro, like I'm not an idiot!"

It stopped Jared's pen from writing down thoughts, closing the pad, "Okay, so about Eric."

"Oh yeah," Jay rubs it in, "what was it you were going to tell me three weeks from now, that you should have told me yesterday?"

"Shut up and listen! Eric can apply for scholarship money, if he has a job pertaining to the field of study he's interested in majoring in, which is interior design. I have been thinking about it and with two stores now," figuring he better consult his `partner', "I'd like your opinion on creating a position for someone who would be responsible for designing and executing displays?"

"Well, thanks for finally thinking about me, Jare, but I wouldn't even know how to think about something like that. Like, what would Eric do?"

"There!" Jared says with emphasis.

"What?"

"I didn't mention anything about Eric and you thought he would be good in the position," further playing Jay up, "and now I don't have to bother taking out an ad in the local paper for the position. You saved the company a lot of money with your expertise!"

"Shut up, bro. Don't patronize me. You and me both knew you were going to appoint Eric."

"You think you're so smart," Jared sets the scene for another hit on his brother, "I really was going to advertise for some other cute guy!"

"Whatever," Jay says. "So Eric's out and Jeffry's in, that is if you've already talked to him, which I suspect so?"

"No, for your information, `Mr Sarcastic'. I thought I'd leave that little detail up to you?" Jared says.

"Me?" Jay slaps himself on the chest, "Like, aren't you supposed to be doing that stuff? I mean, you're like in charge of the money?"

Meant, the sum of the will their parents left behind, which after funeral expenses, it still made them set for life, as long as the business kept ongoing, Jared cutting some of the chains keeping it bound up, "I know the will states you cannot touch any of it until you're 21, but that doesn't mean you don't have partial access to it?"

"You just contradicted yourself, bro? Like the lawyer read it to us, gave me a dirty look, making me look like a little kid like I would run out and spend the accounts down to nothing?" Jay rants.

"Wise decision," Jared lets it hang.

"Okay, I got to admit, at the time I probably would have blown it all on surfing, but what about now?"

Jared says, "If you would shush and listen?"

"I'm listening," Jay moves his head around, like his neck aches.

"Whatsamatter?" Jared asks with concern.

"I'm getting bored. Hurry up!"

"As I was saying, I thought I would set up an account for a small amount and see how you handle it, using it to pay for some of the furnishings, which brings me to another thing I should have mentioned, `yesterday'..."

"Jare!" Jay yells at him with exasperation, trying to slap his brother on the knee, which causes him to get caught with both of Jared's hands, shoulders falling forward.

"Happy?"

"Does the new chair have like a `catch-all' strap around here," Jay paints an imaginary line under his pecs!

"I'm not sure. Can we get back to business, before the other natives get restless?"

Only thing which interested Jay, for the moment was, "How much money are you giving me to spend?"

"A modest amount. Ten grand match your expectations, bro?"

"That's it?" Jay replies, counting on his fingers in silence. "That's only about 6 1/2 Zeph boards!"

"You better not spend it on only surfboards!"

Knowing he had an obsession, for Jay, he eluded thinking of something he loved so much, becoming a thing of the past. Though, his young mind was still driven, "What do you mean? I just can't give up on surfing. But how would you know, Jare?!"

"You're right," Jared says facetiously, "like, how would I, the closest person in your life, in the past or present, know so much about you?" he stands. As with Jay's good friend Jake, Jared knew how much surfing was a part of his brother's life, but with the fascination lingering on, consuming Jay more and more, than the sport itself, "You have to stop thinking about it so much, bro!"

"What do you mean stop thinking about surfing?" Panicky, Jay asserts, "What if tomorrow or next week I get the feeling back? I have to be ready. I have to..."

"Stop it, Jay!" Jared stands, looks down on his brother.

"What?" Jay is shocked by Jared's raised voice and the nasty `attack'.

"We have to be realistic here. `What ifs' are not going to cut it for you..."

Jay realizes from counseling, "Paul says that to me. Have you been talking to him? My counseling sessions are supposed to be confidential. He's not supposed to be blabbing it to anyone else. I could sue him for it!"

Leaning over, placing his hands on the arms of the wheelchair, Jared says, "Oh now, wouldn't that be fine and dandy. Sure, Paul has an interest in me, so you're out to take him down?"

"That's so fuckin' wrong, Jare!"

"Is it? For the past few months, every time I've brought up the subject of going out, being among the community, you've shot me down. I mean, you yourself have said you've been looking forward to some independence, but dear little bro, you're not going to come close to achieving it, cooped up in this house?"

Filled up, Jay honestly did not know where to take this. Right now he was in a dither, caught between love and hate. Love, for his brother, the literal closeness they shared, mental and physical and hate, hating the accusations.

It only took a few seconds for things to go from boiling mad, to simmering, their locked-on stares diminishing.

Jay's intentions of staying firm collapses, along with the bridge of his neck, breaking the fix each had on the other. Moving his arms, hands clasped together in his lap, Jay's head bows in surrender.

Leaning over him, saying, "I'm sorry it came to this, but I'm glad we had it out. It's important."

Jay pouts, still paying more attention to his hands in his lap, than his bro, "I don't hate you, Jare."

Seeing it coming, head bending forward, rather than make a quick grab for the shoulders, Jared bends on one knee and like a footballer, keeps Jay somewhat upright, applying his shoulder under his brother's chin.

Finally realizing the pivoting of his bod, Jay looks up, their cheekbones sideswiping each other. Once again, as has happened on a few occasions, Jared is hugging both Jay and the chair, making confession, "While we're on the subject of Paul, I want to mention, I broke up with him."

Jay's head pops up from the slight embracement. "What happened?"

"Usual scenario, `old boyfriend pops up from out of his past and Paul is running off into the sunset with his knight in shining armor!'"

Sentimental effect, Jay says, "Oh man. That like, sucks! And here I am thinking about myself!"

Caving in a little, Jared replies, "Everyone has the right to."

"Except yourself, Jare?"

"I don't get you bro?" Jared stare into Jay's eyes.

"Like, here I'm thinking about surfboards and not even thinking about your grieving over losing a guy you were head over heels in love with?" Jay explains.

"Well, I wouldn't put it quite like that. Not `head over heels'. Let's just keep it simple. More like, thrown from the surfboard into the shark tank, but swimming clear?"

"Like putting all your eggs in one basket?"

Sometimes it could go on like this, each quoting a phrase, whether it pertained to the situation or not, which happened to be one of their mother's ways of breaking down an argument between the two.

It ended with Jay quoting, "The calm before the storm?"

"Yeah, well," Jared runs out of ideas, resorting to, "let's just be thankful we've reached the calm before the tsunami wiped us out?"

"Yeah, well I'm sorry I'm such a rough storm for you sometimes," Jay replies.

"Not a problem. I kind of look at it as, well and if I meet some guy, we decide to settle down and have children, at least I'll know how to handle a `problem-child!'" He smiles, eyes again locked in place.

"You've given me more chances than a person's should have."

Rebounding on the psychology, Jared says, "There's another phrase you're not supposed to use, `should have'?"

"So, sue me!"

"I'd rather do this," Jared says and even though it had been quite a few month since an intimate moment has occurred, Jared leans forward and attaches his lips to his brother's.

Possibly a combination of giving Jared a hard time, as Jay thought, or that he loved his brotherly dearly, any number of reasons could be the driven cause Jay puts his hand to the back of his brother's neck and the two press heads together.

"Hey, what the fuck is this?" Jake calls out, yet not really phased by the brother-to-brother kissing deemed for lover-to-lover action, communicated by catching the two at it, which led up to Jay explaining it, without specialized knowledge.

However, the opinion of Jeffry, it leaves him stifled, in silence, his mouth gaping open.

On knees, in front of the wheelchair, Jared looks up at the two, saying, "Trying to catch flies, Jeffry?"

"What do you think?"

Jay passes it along, "When you have a chance, Jake, explain it to Jeffry?"

At times a naughty boy, Jake replies, "Sure. Would make a nice bedtime story, huh Jeffry?"

When Jeffry, still trying to grasp the situation, doesn't return a witty remark fast enough, Jared is on it, "Didn't anyone ever tell you not to talk with your mouth full, Jake?"

Thinking of it, this lithe muscle dude, going down on him, Jeffry replies, "I'm sure it would have a happy ending!"

Leave it to Jay, "That's nice guys, but I'm kind of hungry here and not exactly hungry for Jeffry's sausage?"

All of them hungry, they agreed with Jay, in the need of something a little more solid than a cream puff, they got themselves together and headed on out, the brothers' conversation closed for now.

Outside, Jared comments, "Shit!" to the flat tire on his truck.

Coming to their rescue, Jeffry says, "It's a beautiful day for a walk?"

Having the inside connections, Jake has a rival service station in mind. In resolution, Jake lifts his tee shirt, whips out his phone, "I got just the man to fix it." As the other three wait on Jake, they hear him call his friend, `Cody', excited, then disappointment setting in, Jake finishing out the call, "Sounds cool to me!"

"What's up?" Jared places a hand on Jake's shoulder.

"Cody, he hurt his hand, but is bringing his stepdad along to help fix the flat," Jake replies, "no charge!" he smiles.

"Okay," Jared turns around, looks to Jay and Jeffry, then says to Jake, "you three head on out and I'll wait for them."

"Sounds like a plan," Jeffry agrees, "and when we decide on a place to eat, I'll come back to tell you where!"

With their plan in motion, Jeffry and Jake each take a handle of the wheelchair, rolling down the drive, until it's discovered the wheels don't take kindly to cobblestones. Jeffry gives Jay a bearhug, lifting him beyond the apron, Jake providing the momentum to drive the chair the fifty feet.

"Wait!" Jay exclaims, which heralds the attention of not only those close, but his brother, up the driveway.

"What's the problem?" Jared yells.

"We forgot about Thor!" Jay calls back, cupping hands at his mouth.

"Go on," Jared motions with his hand. "I'll take care of Thor!"

On their merry way, Jared, staring down at the flat, thinks back on his words about Jay caring for the new dog in the family!
