The buzzing of the alarm clock pulled Carlos out of his dream. Half awake and half asleep, he reached over to his bedside table hitting the snooze button. Pulling the covers over his head to block the sun's rays that were coming through cracks in his blinds, Carlos tried to fall back to sleep. Just as he was entering back into his dream world, the alarm clock sounded again. Reaching out of his cover, he hit the `off' button and then fell sleep.

The smell of eggs and bacon in the air entered into his dream world, he woke up. Jumping out of his bed, he ran into the bathroom, washed up and went back to his room and got dressed. Once he was ready for school. He grabbed his back pack and ran down to the kitchen. As he walked in, his mother greeted him as she was putting a plate of eggs and bacon in front of his step-father.

Quickly he sat down and before he could ask for his plate, his mother was already preparing it. It didn't take him long to eat what was put in front of him. He pretty much inhaled his mother's cooking. Once he was done, he put his plate into the dishwasher, kissed his mother goodbye and headed out. As he made his way to the door, Carlos yelled out to his step-father to have a good day at work.

Just as he got to the front door, the doorbell rang, causing Carlos to drop his back pack and almost jump out of his shoes. Once his heart stopped beating so fast, he opened to door to find Kimberly there with her brothers. "Do you know you almost gave me a heart attack? Man I am too young to die." Carlos swiped his hand across his forehead.

Armando and Richie cracked up laughing at seeing the big tough former gang member sweating and green in the face. As Carlos walked out, he playfully slapped the back of his girlfriend's brother's heads. All the way down the street, they playfully fought until Kimberly told them to stop.

The rest of the way to school, Carlos and Kimberly talked generally. They learned a couple weeks ago to not talk about their relationship or anything personal in front of Armando and Richie. If they hear anything they think they could bring back over and over again to tease Kimberly and Carlos, they would. So now they are careful on what they say in front of them.

As soon as they got to school, they spit up and went their own directions. Carlos and Kimberly headed down to the cafeteria to hang out with the gang. They attend the oldest and largest school in El Paso, Texas. It was built in the late eighteen hundreds, but didn't open until the early nineteen hundreds. If you stand in front of if, you would think you were lost because the football field and stadium was built right in front. It is the only high school in El Paso that has a full stadium made out of concrete. The school also stands four stories and has close to two thousands kids attending it. In other words, it will not take much for you to get lost in it.

Once they got their food, they headed over to the group that was already into their conversation. Carlos and Kimberly sat down and joined in as they normally do. As soon as everyone was done eating, they headed out to the stadium to continue their conversation. Kimberly pulled Carlos away from the group the minute they walked into the hallway. She saw that he was confused, maybe a little mad that she did that.

Pulling Carlos to her side, she whispered in his ear. "I want some alone time with you this morning. You have been working and helping your parents, we haven't had any time to be alone. So let's use the rest of the time before first period to talk and just be with each other, what do you think?"

A big smile replaced the confused angry look Carlos had. "Heck yeah, let's head to the far stair well on the first floor. No one is ever there at this time in the morning. We will have all the privacy we need there."

Carlos waited for a response from Kimberly and once she shook her head, he grabbed onto her arm and pulled her up the stairs as fast as he could. Once they reached the first floor, they walked down the hallway as fast as they could, almost running. They passed a bathroom before getting to the stairway; a loud scream came out of the boy's bathroom stopping Carlos in his tracks.

The closer he got to the door, the more he was able to make out what the sounds were. Then it hit him, there was no doubt in his mind what was coming from the bathroom. Letting go of Kimberly's arm, Carlos went busting through the door. Kimberly looked in and couldn't believe what she was seeing. Immediately, she ran to find a security guard.

Carlos couldn't believe what he was seeing either. There were five people in the bathroom. Four of them he knew were juniors, and the fifth was someone who he'd never seen before. The kid he didn't know looked to be a freshman at most, and was on the ground on his hands and knees. His shirt was in tatters hanging on his slim chest. His jeans were torn, and around his knees.

The kid had tears flowing down his from his eyes, and Carlos saw what was obviously semen splattered all over his face. Carlos recognized all four of the juniors in the room as being some of the jocks that had spoken up against his friend Jacob, who is one of their group and running for election as School President, currently two of them were holding the kid down while the leader of the group was forcing his penis in and out of the kids mouth, while the fourth had his penis buried in the little boys back side.

"WHAT THE FUCK?!" Carlos said loudly getting the attention of the four boys. As soon as the leader of the group pulled his dick out of the little kids' mouth, the kid started crying out in pain. Before Carlos could do anything, the older boy punched the kid in the side of the head telling him to "shut the fuck up." Carlos lost it, and before anyone else could do anything he charged.

The two that were holding the kid down, jumped up, but before they could face Carlos, he was on the first one. He punched him once in the face, then grabbed his shirt and belt, and threw him as hard as he could into the wall. Unfortunately for the junior, instead of just hitting the wall, he actually went face first in the long mirror that was next to the door.

The second one took a swing at Carlos, he ducked, and before the junior could try again, Carlos unloaded several devastating punches to his abdomen, and left kidney. As the he doubled over, Carlos grabbed the back of the juniors head, and pulled with all his might straight down, bringing his knee up. The kid flew backwards and hit the wall of the bathroom stalls. Before hitting the floor he was unconscious.

Tommy, the kid that had been penetrating the young boy from behind was the next on to come after Carlos. He was smarter than the ring leader was, and had never pulled down his pants to do the deed; he had simply pulled his penis out the fly of his jeans. When he swung at Carlos, he actually connected. Not that it mattered by this point. Carlos was too enraged, and was so used to being in fights, that he knew how to shake off the effects of a punch very easily.

Carlos lashed out with a kick directly to Tommy's crotch. Tommy's breath exploded out of his lungs, making it so that he couldn't even scream in pain. As he bent over, both hands protecting in injured man-hood, Carlos brought both of his fists down hard on the back of his neck, driving the older boy face first onto the floor of the bathroom, making him unconscious just like his buddies.

Garret Buchanan had finally gotten his pants up and buttoned just as his third buddy hit the ground, and Carlos turned on him. "What the fuck man? He's just a little fagot!" Carlos was ready about to go after him when Garret reached into his pants pocket and pulled out a switch blade. Carlos had been in many fights that knives have been pulled on him. Most people would have backed off seeing the knife, but not Carlos; all it did was piss him off even more. "Oh, can't fight me like a man huh? You gotta pull a knife, you pussy!"

"You shoulda just took your turn in the fagots ass, instead of attacking us. Now I Gotta cut you up!" Garret hissed and was about to lunge at Carlos when the door banged open.

Principle Michaels couldn't believe what he walked into. In the far corner of the bathroom was the young boy that he had talked to not thirty minutes ago, when he registered for his first day of school. Now he was sitting there crying, desperately trying to hide his privates with jeans that were torn to shreds. His shirt hung off of him in tatters, and the ripped remains of his briefs were sitting next to him on the floor. Because the boy had his knees pulled up to his chest, and his arms wrapped around them, Principle Michaels was able to see blood leaking from his bottom, pooling beneath him.

There were three other boys in the room lying on the floor obviously unconscious, one of them was slumped against one of the bathroom stalls. Another was lying in a pile of broken glass and blood, while the third was laid out in the middle of the floor, blood leaking from his nose and mouth.

To make matters even worse, he saw Carlos standing a few feet to his left, crouched down like a cobra ready to strike, and not far away to his right was Garret Buchanan, the schools star baseball player, standing there with a knife in his hand.

Principle Michaels took all this in with in a split second, and immediately started to try and defuse the situation. He spoke in a soft yet strong voice, as he held his arms outstretched blocking the schools security guards from moving past him. "Okay Garret, put the knife down. There's no need for that here."

Garret looked at Michaels with a look of pure hatred. "Fuck you dude. Since you can't keep the fagots outta this school, we gotta do it ourselves. If you'd do your job, we wouldn't have to. This is your entire fault!" With that said, Garret surprised everyone, except Carlos as he turned and lunged at Principle Michaels, knife first.

Carlos was expecting it. With all the fights he'd been in, he's become very good at reading what people were gonna do. The second Garret started to move so did he. While Carlos may not have had the same interactions with the principle as Alex has, he knew everything Alex said about the man. If Alex liked and respected the man, then Carlos did as well. He was not going to allow a man that Alex thought of so highly to be stabbed.

Being a veteran street fighter Carlos knew that if he was going to get stabbed, he wanted it to be where he wanted it, and not where the other guy did. He knew the best place for a knife wielded by an enemy was either in the enemy, or in himself, but in a place that would cause the least amount of damage. So when he moved, he knew two things; the first was, he was going to take the knife so it didn't hit the principle. Second, it had to make sure the knife hit him somewhere that wouldn't hurt him so badly that it could kill him.

Principle Michaels saw Garret lunge at him, and brought his arms up to try and block it, but knew he wouldn't be able to. He wasn't watching Carlos closely since he knew Carlos wasn't the kind of person he needed to worry about anymore. To his surprise, Carlos was able to move quicker then he would have thought, and actually got between Garret and Michaels, not only did he get between him, but Michaels saw him actually grab Garrets wrist and change the path of the blade. Garret had been intending to stab the principle in the chest, but Carlos was able to move the blade so that it sunk hilt deep into his own shoulder.

Pain exploded in Carlos, but he quickly pushed it down as he slammed into Garret taking them both to the floor. Landing directly on top of Garret, Carlos began raining blow after blow down on the bigger boys face and head. He had no clue how many punches he got in before he was pulled off the boy, and pushed away. Standing there panting, he watched as two of the security officers rushed to Garret, flipped him over, and one of them put his knee into the boys back pinning him to the floor.

Two other guards stood between Carlos and Garret and looked at Carlos with shock and wonder. They both knew exactly what he had just done, and didn't know what to do now. He was standing there panting, his eyes locked on theirs almost daring them to come after him. He seemed totally oblivious that there was a knife sticking out of his shoulder.

Michaels shook his head to clear it, and immediately went over to the boy in the corner. It took him a moment to remember the boy's name, but by the time he was kneeling next to the boy, he'd remembered it. "Davey... are you okay?"

The second the man's hand touched Davey's shoulder, the boy let out a howl of fear and tried to scramble away from the man. Unfortunately for him, Davey was already in the corner, which means he couldn't get very far.

He screamed again, and this time Michaels actually backed up a bit. Davey's eyes darted around wildly until they fell on Carlos. As soon as their eyes met, Carlos shot the few feet between them, and was at Davey's side in an instant. He wrapped his arms protectively around the smaller boy, ignoring the pain that shot through his arm and shoulder. Davey buried his head into Carlos's chest and began sobbing loudly.

Michaels backed off, and stood up. He grabbed the radio off his belt and was about to talk into it, when he thought better about it. He turned to one of the guards and started to bark out orders. "Run down to the office and call the cops. We'll also need a bunch of ambulances."

The guard ran off, while the principle turned to one of the other guards. "Get the rest of the guards and seal off this section of the building. I don't want any students seeing anything that is going on here."

Just then, the school nurse ran in gasping at the carnage. She looked around and quickly ran over to one of the kids that attacked Davey, to see how badly he was hurt.

Meanwhile the remaining guards all looked at Principle Michaels. All eyes were going between their boss, and Carlos, not sure what to do from here. Principle Michaels made it clear with a single look that none of them were to touch Carlos or Davey.

Carlos, for his part, was in a situation that he'd never been in before. There he was, a knife sticking out of his shoulder, sitting on the floor of one of the bathrooms in the high school, and here was this small boy who had crawled into his lap, and was crying into his shoulder. This thankfully was not the one with the knife sticking out of it.

"Hey there little guy," Carlos said, trying to figure out if there was anything he could say to help this kid, it'll be alright. I gotcha... What's your name? Mine's Carlos."

The kid didn't answer, it didn't even seem like the kid heard the question. Carlos looked up when he noticed Principle Michaels knelt down next to him. "His name's David... David Carson, but he likes to be called Davey."

Carlos noticed that the man actually had tears coming down his face as he looked Davey over. "He must have just left my office before this happened. He just transferred in from up north... I... I told him he didn't have anything to worry about here..." The man couldn't keep talking, and Carlos knew why. Yeah, he'd seen some bad shit in his days, but this was easily one of the worst. Carlos just knew that they were trying to rape this kid to death.

"Don't worry sir," Carlos said with a whole lot more confidence they he had inside of him, "I'll take care of him." When he looked down at Davey, he noticed that the kid was actually looking at him for the first time. His face was covered in semen and the beginnings of bruises, but the one thing Carlos could see very clearly was the boy's very light gray eyes. He'd never seen eyes that color before, and for a moment they took his breath away. Not just from the beauty of them, but also from the raw fear he saw in them.

Ignoring yet again the pain shooting through his arm, Carlos pulled the boy tighter to his chest, and the boy didn't respond, other than to bury his face back into Carlos's chest. He wasn't crying anymore, which Carlos didn't know if that was good or bad, but either way, the boy was now silent.

Kimberly came running into the room then, and when the security guards tried to stop her, Principle Michaels waved her in. She immediately ran to Carlos's side, but stopped short when she saw the state that Davey was in. She couldn't help but let out a gasp as she really got a good look at the boy. She looked into Carlos's eyes, was shocked to see tears in his eyes as well. Then she saw the knife. "OH my God Carlos! Are you okay?"

Carlos untangled his injured arm from Davey, and despite the pain, held it out Kimberly. "Shhhh.... I'll be fine. Yeah it hurts a bit, but I've had much worse." He said with a grin as she took his hand and held it to her face. "Listen, I know I'll need to go to the hospital, but there's something I need you to do for me. As soon as I leave, and not before, find Alex, and tell him what's going on. Make sure I've already left, and do NOT tell him who those assholes are." He said indicating the three unconscious boys and Garret.

Before she could reply, the room started to fill up with both police and emergency medical workers. As soon as the first of the police officers entered the bathroom, Principle Michaels walked over to them, and started talking in whispers. Carlos started to get a bit worried when the man pointed over towards him, and the cop nodded. However, the thin smile and nod that Michaels gave to Carlos set the boy's mind at ease. Once the room got full of police and ambulance workers, Kimberly got asked to move outside by Principle Michaels. Reluctantly she agreed but only after kissing Carols quickly on the lips, and getting the principle to agree that she could wait right outside the room.

Within a few moments, the four other boys were loaded onto stretchers and moved out of the bathroom. The remaining ambulance crew moved over towards Carlos and Davey. The lead paramedic knelt down in front of the two boys, and started to speak softly. "Hey guys, my names Matt. I'm her to help you guys. Is that okay?"

Carlos had to stop himself from rolling his eyes. The first thought that hit his mind was `No thank you. I think I'll just sit here with a kid that bleeding from his ass, and a knife sticking out of my shoulder all day long. Thank you!' Thankfully he kept his mouth shut, and just nodded.

Matt smiled, nodded in return, and reached out to gently lay a hand on Davey's shoulder. As soon as the man touched Davey's shoulder, the boy started screaming again and shaking like a leaf. Matt pulled his hand back quickly, and Carlos started to talk to Davey in the most soothing voice he could muster. "It's okay Davey. He's here to help us. You gotta let him help you okay?"

Davey looked up into Carlos's eyes and searched his eyes for a brief moment before he nodded slightly. Carlos then looked to Matt and nodded, "He's okay now. Do what you need to."

Matt again reached out and laid his hand on Davey's shoulder. The second he did, Davey didn't scream, but he did whimper and tensed up. Matt pulled his hand back a second time, and stood up. Looking at Carlos Matt made a decision. "I know your hurt, but do you think you can carry him over to our stretcher?"

Carlos nodded, and with Matt's help he was able to make it to his feet. He winced several times as the knife sent searing pain through his arm and shoulder. He laid the boy down on the gurney and before he could back off, Davey's hand shot out and grabbed his. Carlos saw the pleading look the boy gave him, and nodded, as he squeezed his hand. "Don't worry Davey, I ain't going nowhere." That got a small smile from Davey who then shut his eyes as Matt and his partner started to look over Davey's body to see what damage was done to him.

They quickly got Davey ready to move, but at one point, Carlos let go of Davey's hand so the medic could work. The second their hands separated, Davey started thrashing around and trying to fight the men that were working on him. Carlos lunged back over and took Davey's hand and started talking soothingly to him. As soon as Carlos was at his side and holding his hand, Davey calmed back down.

Matt looked at Carlos and in a quiet voice said, "I think you better keep a hold of him no matter what. I can give you a shot if the pain's too much for you, but for now, I think we're gonna have to leave the knife alone. We gotta get this kid to the hospital and keep him as calm as possible."

"Just go. Don't worry about the knife, I've had lots worse." Carlos said and Matt just nodded. Quickly they started moving out of the bathroom and down the deserted hallway. Obviously the security guards did their jobs, and made sure none of the students got anywhere near that bathroom. Mind you the same could not be said once they went outside.

A huge group of students lined the walkway to see what was going on. So far they'd seen four juniors wheeled out, all of them looking the worse for wear, and they could only imagine how bad anyone else looked. Thankfully before they left the bathroom, Matt made sure that Davey was covered with a sheet, and he had also done what he could to clean up the small boy's face. Carlos heard many of the kids whispering as he was rushed by. He knew they were talking about the fact that he was holding the kids hand. Had he actually cared what others thought, he might have pulled his hand back. But he didn't care, so he didn't pull his hand back. Moments later, they were in the back of the ambulance, and speeding away.

The entire way to the hospital, Carlos held Davey's hand. Even when the paramedic secured the knife that was still sticking out of Carlos's shoulder, he never let go. Davey for his part never looked anywhere but straight up. He never once said a word, or even acknowledged anyone but Carlos. Every time the paramedic asked Davey a question, Carlos had to repeat it to get any type of response from the boy. Even then it was only a shake of his head, or a nod. He never uttered a sound, other than a whimper when the paramedic examined his back side. Carlos's anger almost got the better of him when he saw what those guys had done to the young boy.

Before he knew it, the ambulance stopped and Davey was being pulled out of the back of the ambulance. All the way into the hospital, Carlos never let go of Davey's hand. Once they were in the treatment bay, the nurses tried to separate the two, saying that Carlos needed to get his shoulder dealt with. Carlos would not leave Davey alone and told them as much. One of the nurses decided to get involved and physically separated the two boys. Before Carlos had a chance to react, Davey started screaming and calling out for Carlos. The older boy shoved the nurse out of the way, and took Davey's hand again. "I'm here Davey. No one's gonna hurt you here. I promise you, they just want to help!"

The room was dead silent, all the nurses had stopped what they were doing when Davey started screaming, now they all just watched as Carlos tried to calm him down. "Are... are you sure they won't hurt me?"

Carlos nodded while patting Davey's hand. "I promise they won't. However, I need you to do me a favor. I gotta get my shoulder looked at, and this damn knife taken out. I promise I won't leave the room, but I gotta go over there so they can do what they need to. Will you be okay?"

Carlos could see the look in Davey's eyes, and it was something that he would never forget. Carlos has seen people, looked into their eyes, right before they died, and he'd never seen fear like this. Carlos couldn't even imagine what would make someone so afraid.

Trying to put on a strong front, Davey nodded, and let go of Carlos's hand. "I... I promise to let them do what they need to. Just... just don't leave me." Davey said softly, with his eyes squeezed shut, Carlos couldn't help it. As he patted the young boy on the shoulder, he wiped a few of his own tears from his eyes.

One of the nurses smiled at Carlos, and led him to the bed right next to Davey. So he could keep an eye on Davey, and noticed that the young boy was glancing over several times, just to make sure he was still there. Every time Davey looked at him, Carlos smiled back.

It took about ten minutes for the doctor who was working on Carlos to pull the knife out, and declare that Carlos had got real lucky since the knife didn't really hurt anything. Carlos was holding the bandage on his shoulder while keeping an eye on Davey. That's when all hell broke loose.

Davey was doing fine, they had gotten him cleaned up for the most part, he was going to have some bruising, but nothing was broken. The doctor and the nurses were very conscientious of the bond between the two boys, so even when they pulled the curtains to make sure no one could peak in, they made sure that the two boys could see each other.

Everything was going fine, until the doctor had to examine Davey's backside. As soon as the doctor pushed a finger inside of Davey, the boy went nuts. He started screaming and trashing about, trying to get away from the doctor. Carlos was out of his bed, and at Davey's side in a flash. Of course that didn't make the doctor who was working on Carlos very happy, but he didn't care.

The doctor that was working on Davey was more understanding of happening, and had no problem giving Carlos the time he needed to not only calm Davey down, but to explain what the doctor needed to do. The doctor would explain what he was going to do to Carlos who then would tell Davey what was going to happen, and the doctor didn't do anything until Davey not only understood what was happening, but gave his permission.

It was only a few moments before the doctor was frowning heavily. He spoke in whispers to one of the nurses, turning to face Carlos and Davey. "I will be blunt with you guys. There is some damage down there that has to be fixed, and fixed quickly. What that means Davey is we're going to have to take you into surgery. Now don't worry, it's nothing really bad, we just gotta get it fixed. Okay?"

Carlos looked at Davey who looked back at him, but it was the doctor that spoke up first. "Don't worry Davey, Carlos here will be with you right till you go to sleep, and I have already made the orders to have you and Carlos in the same room as soon as you get out of surgery. So when you go to sleep Carlos will be here, and he'll also be right there when you wake up. Okay?"

Davey looked back at Carlos with almost panic in his eyes. Carlos nodded and smiled to the younger boy, trying to reassure him as much as possible. "Like the doc just said. I'll wait for you to go to sleep, and I'll be right there when you wake up... Okay?"

Davey nodded at the same time that a nurse walked in to give him the shot. When the doctor nodded to her, she moved forward, injected the medicine directly into the access port of the IV line, and within one minute, Davey was out. As soon as Carlos was sure Davey was out, he walked back over to where the other doctor was scowling at him, jumped back up on the bed, and simply let his mind go back over the events of the last hour, and wondering how someone could have attached himself to him, as quickly as Davey had. He was so intent in his thinking, he never even realized the doctor has finished stitching him up, and had left the room. He was brought out of his mental musing when an orderly came in, and told Carlos that he was being moved upstairs into a more private room. Carlos nodded and just sat back to enjoy the ride.

Before he knew it, Carlos was alone in a semi private room. Before he left the Orderly informed him that when he gets a roommate, it's gonna be Davey, just as soon as he's out of surgery. Nothing else was said and soon Carlos was alone.

That didn't last too long though, within a few minutes his mother walked in as well as a police officer. Immediately, Carlos's mom was all over him, trying to find out what happened, and if he was okay. "Come on mom... I'm fine. It was just a little knife!" Carlos laughed, but the look he got from his mother quickly stopped him.

The detective thought now would be a good time to jump in, and hopefully stop his witness's mother from killing him before he got the statement he needed. Stepping forward, he introduced himself to Carlos. "Hi Carlos, I'm Detective Alvarez. If you don't mind, I'd like to talk to you about what happened today. Before I go on, I need to let you know that I have already spoken to Principal Michaels, as well as the security that was there. You're turning out to be quite the hero right now."

Carlos's mom looked up in shock at what the detective just said. Before she could start asking questions, the detective started. It took them nearly forty-five minutes for Carlos to go through everything. Somewhere during his retelling Alex and the rest of the group showed up and just stood there listening to the tale as it unfolded.

Detective Alvarez closed his notebook and looked at Carlos, then his mother, and then the group of friends that come, then finally back to Carlos. "Well young man that was quite a story. Everything you have said is backed up by a lot of other people. No matter what happens, you did the right thing, and I am sure there's a young man that will be thanking you as soon as he can think clearly. Not only that, but Principal Michaels has done nothing but sing your praises the entire time I talked to him. Not just because you took the knife that was meant for him, but because of how you've turned your life around."

The man walked over and sat down in the chair next to Carlos. "I took a look at your file while I was waiting for the doctors to give the all clear for me to talk to you. You and your friend Alex here have done a tremendous job in turning your lives around." He patted Carlos on the leg as he stood back up. "Okay, now that my personal feelings are said, let me get back to business. The four boys that were assaulting the young man have all been arrested. Three of them will have to wait to go to jail till after they leave the hospital. You may be interested in knowing that one of them will have to have a lot of re-constructive surgery to his face. There was a lot of glass that got embedded in his face, not to mention a broken nose, and a fractured skull. None of that is life threatening... but I don't think he'll be getting many dates for a while. The second one also has a broken nose, a shattered jaw, and over half of his teeth were knocked out. Not to mention hell be peeing blood for a while. From what the doctors said, while you didn't do any permanent damage to the his kidney, you did bruise the hell out of it. The last one may have fared the worst. One of his testicles ruptured and had to be removed. He'll also not be getting many dates for a while; he does have a bruised up face, as well as a sore jaw once they take out the wires they had to put in place to keep his jaw in one piece."

Alvarez sighed as he saw Carlos's mother's jaw hanging on the floor and a look of shock on many of the faces of Carlos's friends. "The last guy, Garrett... While he didn't get many injuries, he will be a guest of the state for a long time. From what I have been told, the DA has already charged him with three counts of attempted murder, as well as rape. There will probably be more charges filed as the investigation continues, but needless to say, you won't have to worry about them again."

Next he looked over to Carlos's mother and spoke to her. "Mrs. Medina. I want to make sure you understand this. Your son is a hero. Not only did he break up a group of boys who was raping a thirteen year old boy, and by the way, Garrett went so far as to say they intended to kill the kid when they were done. So not only did Carlos stop the rape, but also very likely saved the boy's life. On top of all that, even though Carlos tried to play it down, every one there says the same thing. Your son intentionally got between Garrett's knife, and Principal Michaels While we will never, thankfully, know how much the knife would have hurt the Principal, one of the guards swears Garrett was aiming for either the man's chest, or his throat. Either of which could have been fatal." He looked into the woman's eyes and spoke from the heart. "I know your son had his problems in the past, but I think we can agree that these were the actions of someone who has put the past behind him, and is trying to make the best of his life. You should be very proud of him. Hell I would be honored to have such a man for a son."

Carlos's mother was too emotional to speak right then, so she simply nodded. Alvarez then looked back down to Carlos who was blushing slightly at all the praise. "Now one final thing, understand, nothing can or will come from this, but I've been informed that the parents of the three boys who went to the hospital, were mouthing off demanding that Carlos be arrested for how badly their sons were injured..." Alvarez laughed a bit, trying to make sure that everyone didn't get too upset by that. "Like that would actually happen. However, they may try to sue you guys for damages. I find it unlikely that they would even find a lawyer who would be willing to take the case, and even if they do, there is no judge around that would entertain such a law suit. However, as unlikely as it might be, IF that happens, you call me, and I would be honored to testify on your behalf... Okay?"

In another part of Texas

"Sally, you know if you go up against this, you're gonna lose your job, and there won't be a damned thing I can do about it." Tom Dickerson said as he paced in his office.

Sally Hughes sat in one of the visitors chairs in the director's office set in her mind. "Tom, what's happening there is wrong, and you and I both know it. If I lose my job so be it, at least I'll be able to sleep with myself at night!"

Tom sighed and sat down behind his desk. Looking at Sally he thought back to how much help she'd been for him since he took over as the local director of Social Services. Sally may have only been a case worker, but that was her choice, not anyone else. More times than he cared to count, she had turned down promotions, all because she wanted to keep helping the kids directly. Now one of her kids was in trouble, and she was going to move heaven and earth to help him.

"You know I don't have any pull down there, and with her husband being on the state board, you're going against someone who has more pull than you can ever imagine. The only way you could bring her down is to go public... and you know you will lose your job with Children's Social Services if you do that." Tom said laying it all on the line for her.

Sally sighed and sat back in her chair. "Yeah I know Tom, but I don't know what else I can do. What that lady is doing down in El Paso should be illegal!"

Tom nodded, reaching for some paperwork on his desk. "I agree with you, which is why I have approved your emergency leave to go and deal with this. Also, I pulled some strings, you won't be driving... I got a friend of mine who has a plane. He's getting it ready as we speak. Once down there, I got a car set up for you. Other than that you're on your own. I'll help where I can, but it won't be much. Just get down there, and get that kid straightened around. Hopefully I will have you back up being your normal pain in my ass. Okay?"

Sally was stunned that Tom did as much as he did for her, so without chancing her luck, she got up, gave him a hug, and almost ran out the door. She knew within two hours, she would be able to look into what prompted Davey to send her the letter that he did. Hopefully things haven't gotten worse since then.

Once Detective Alvarez left the room, everyone stood there staring at Carlos. His eyes first fell on his girlfriend Kimberly. He was afraid that she might have been upset with him, but all he saw in her eyes were love and pride. Something he wasn't used to seeing in someone else's eyes, and especially not directed at him.

Standing next to her were his best friend Alex, and his boyfriend Matt. While he wasn't proud of his past, one of the things he was proud of was that he always had his best friends back. Now that Alex had Matt though, Carlos was free to let his own wings spread some.

Next to those two was another couple, Steven and Robert. From the looks of things, all five of them rushed right from school and came over to see how he was doing. He was glad that he had such good friends, even if he didn't know them that well, all but Alex and Matt, still came to support him. This made Carlos feel very good.

However, everyone standing there looking at him actually got him bit nervous. Finally he couldn't take it anymore. "WHAT?"

Almost everyone started to giggle and laugh. Finally it was Alex who spoke up as he moved over next to the bed. "Damn bro, I never figured you to be the hero type!"

"Oh shut up! You would have done the same thing if you'd been the one to walk in there. What I did wasn't nothing'." Carlos said trying to dismiss what he did as nothing big.

Kimberly wouldn't let that stand so she walked right up to him and playfully slapped him on the uninjured arm. "What you did meant a lot to that young boy. Don't you dare tear apart the security he built around you by saying it wasn't anything. Not many people would have tried to help him the way you did. What you did was something only a very caring person would do!" Before he could respond, she leaned down and laid one heck of a passionate kiss on him. When she broke the kiss and stood back up, almost everyone laughed at the goofy little smile on his face and the redness in his cheeks. The only thing he could say was a soft `yes ma'am.'

It was only a few moments later when a wild eyed woman came charging into the room. Her graying hair was mussed up, and her clothes rumpled. She was holding two bags and her purse. She stopped just inside the door and looked around. "Where's Davey?!"

All eyes turned to Carlos, who quickly spoke up. "I think he's probably still in surgery."

"Oh my God... you mean he was hurt that bad?! What on earth happened?" Carlos could tell the woman was close to tears by this point, but he really wasn't sure how much to tell the woman.

Carlos pulled himself up in the bed so he was sitting up straighter, totally ignoring the stab of pain in his shoulder. Both Kimberly and his mother gasped slightly at the grimace that formed on his face as he did it. Once he was set the way he wanted to be, he looked at the woman who was looking rather impatient and took a deep breath. It took all of his control to not fall back into the `gangster Carlos' mode. "Ma'am, please understand, I do not know who you are, or how you know Davey. Because of what's happened, I am really not sure how much I should say to someone I don't know. I mean how would Davey feel if his story was broadcast to anyone?"

Carlos saw the woman's face go white, then red with a blush. She took a deep breath, then ran a hand through her hair and smiled gently. "Your right, Of course I do apologize." She took another deep breath, and let it out slowly. She then reached into her purse, and pulled out a wallet, which she opened and handed to Carlos. "My name is Sally Hughes. I work for the Department of Social Services in Amarillo Texas. Davey Carson was one of my wards before he was transferred here to El Paso. I came down to see him because of a rather disturbing letter that he sent me last week. When I got down here, I started to get the run around, until one of the secretaries told me he was here..." Her voice trailed off as her eyes now locked on Carlos with a pleading look.

Carlos looked at first Alex for guidance, when his friend nodded Carlos looked at Kimberly then his mother. All three of them silently said the same thing. `Tell her.' Before he could start though, Kimberly picked up the chair that she had been sitting in, and moved it to the foot of Carlos's bed. "Here you go Ms. Hughes. I'm sure you'll want to sit down for this one."

"Thank you, young lady." Sally said gratefully as she sat down and looked back at Carlos.

He took a deep breath and started to tell the story for the fourth time. As the story unfolded he watched as first, Sally started to tear up, and then get angry, when he got to the point where he comforted the boy, and how he clung to him, she was nodding and smiling slightly. However, through it all, a steady stream of tears flowed from her eyes. When Carlos's voice trailed off, at the end of his story, Sally silently got up, walked over to the window and started to stare out it deep in though.

Silence reigned for a few moments when Carlos got done telling the story and all eyes were on Sally as she stared out the window, deep in thought. Finally she turned back to Carlos, before looking at the rest of the group. Finally she sighed; reached into one of the bags she had, and pulled out a thick file. "This is my personal file on Davey. Not everything that is in here will appear in his official file. The reason I say that is because some of the things I know, should not be common knowledge to others. What I am about to share with all of you is something that I normally would not. The only reason I am is because I believe you all want to help Davey, and after what's just happened, I don't know if it will shatter the very fragile grip Davey has on life."

Sally went to open the file but before she got that far. Carlos's, mom got up out of her chair. "We do not want you to do something that will get you in trouble; since that file is Davey's personal file, it should be up to Davey to tell us the things of his past when he is good and ready." She looked back at her son for support on what she just said.

"I agree with my mother on that. You shouldn't tell us things that will either get you in trouble or make Davey's escape further into his own world. He is already very fragile and if he thinks you are betraying him, he will not trust either of us."

"I am almost positive Davey will not have a problem on me telling you guys this." Sally tried to read Carlos's and his mother's faces since they are the ones that objected, but couldn't get a clear read. "Plus let's not forget we need to be able to talk to each other about Davey. The more we know about how he is doing, the better we can all help him. There is a lot that you do not know. Once I give you a little back ground, everything from the way Davey acted and is acting will make sense." Once she got nods from everyone, she decided to address one of the things that the lady had brought up.

"First off, my being down here will put my job in jeopardy. There is a rotten apple in El Paso, which is how Davey got to be put into the situation he was put in. The problem is, that apple has very big friends. I'm going to expose her, for what she really is, but I am positive that I will lose my job in the process." She stated very matter of fact, and everyone knew she was going to do exactly what she said she was going to, and damn the consequences.

"Why don't I start out by telling you things that are common knowledge if you were to look in the right places? That way I don't put anyone in a bad situation?" She paused for a second, and before anyone else could respond, she continued. "Let's not forget, we all want the same thing here, what's best for Davey." She paused for another brief moment, before continuing. "What I want to share with you will help him. Not only that but I think it will help you understand why he acted the way he did."

Carlos's mom sat back down in her seat, letting Carlos relax a little. He leaned forward and hung onto every word that Sally was saying. As she said, so far what she is telling them is pretty much common knowledge. There hasn't been said that either Carlos wasn't told or could see by the way Davey was acting.

Sally took a deep breath and started to talk. "Davey was abandoned shortly after his birth. There is no record of who his parents are, and to be honest, I personally believe that he was not born in a hospital, but at home. Anyway, he was immediately placed with the Carson family who raised him, and gave him their last name. He stayed with them all the way until he was moved here less than a week ago." She looked around and saw that she had everyone's attention.

"Everything was fine with Davey until about a year ago, but I will get to that in a moment. Davey was one of those boys that was extremely motivated, and excelled at what he put his mind to. He was a straight `A' student, ever since first grade. Never got into more trouble than a normal boy of his age would, actually, he got into less trouble." She paused as she picked up the other bag she had with her. "When Davey was sent down here, we never had time to gather any of his personal belongings. What I have here is only what I was able to find, or had recreated."

She pulled out a 8X10 picture frame and looked at it for a moment, before handing it to Carlos, who then handed it around. "This was Davey a little over a year ago. If you can't tell he is wearing a gymnastic outfit. Davey is very good at gymnastics, and as a matter of fact, he was being looked at to go into a special training program that could have sent him to the Olympics!"

"You mean he is that good?" Kimberly asked in amazement.

"Yes," she reached into her bag on more time, and brought out yet another picture. This one caused everyone to gasp and shack their heads in wonder. "As you can see not only is he an accomplished gymnast, but he's also been awarded his black belt in Karate."

"So now the question becomes, how did the Davey in these pictures become the Davey you rescued this morning; the Davey that clung to you like a life preserver. Well, that's a difficult tale to tell. I don't even know all of it, since Davey hasn't talked about everything that happened to him." Sally sighed deeply then got up and walked over to the window. Her eyes lost focus as she stared out, remembering what she had been told.

"It all started about a year ago. Davey was home alone with his older foster brother. Now you have to understand as far as the family was concerned Davey was every bit a member of it as the birth son was. At least that is how they acted prior to the events of that day. Something you should all know about before I go any further, and before you get angry at me saying this, understand, my youngest son is gay, and I already know of the two couples in this room. When you know what to look for, and aren't afraid to see it, it's there. Anyways, according to Davey, he knew he was gay since the time he turned eleven."

She wasn't surprised when no one said anything behind her. Sally knew many gay people, including her own youngest son, and knew how many of them handled being told that other people knew. These kids behind here were comfortable with who they are, and had a very strong support network. That much she could see just by the reaction that she got.

"Davey's foster parents found out that Davey was gay when they walked in on him giving their older son oral sex. Davey swore to me that Charlie instigated it; however, the Carson's could not possibly have a gay son. So Charlie was immediately defended, and Davey was accused of seducing the older boy. Unfortunately I didn't find this out until it was way too late." She paused for another moment. What no one could see was the shame that was in her eyes from where she felt she let Davey down.

"While they never physically harmed Davey, they did pull him out of everything he loved, and made sure everyone knew what had happened. I am assuming out of fear, but Charlie also turned on Davey. Within two days everyone in Davey's school knew that he had `seduced' the older boy. That's when things started to get bad, and had only started." She sighed knowing this next part was going to be difficult, but it was important.

"There was only one person who Davey could find any sort of friendship with, and that was their next door neighbor. He was a twenty six year old man by the name of Jared Dempsey. When things would get really bad for Davey, Jared was there to help, if in no other way then someone that would listen to him. From everything Davey told me, I truly believe that it was Jared that kept Davey from committing suicide. Yes, he was in that bad a state." She paused for a moment to wipe away her tears, yet she still didn't turn around. She knew if she did, she wouldn't make it through this without totally breaking down. She could hear crying behind her.

"Mrs. Carson tried time and again to drive a wedge between Jared and Davey, but nothing she did worked. You see Jared was a well-respected member of the community. His parents were born and raised there, as was he. In high school Jared was the schools star quarterback, and was looked at to go into the Professional Football League. He got injured while in college, so those dreams were lost. However, he came back to Amarillo and started to coach the high school football team that he came from. Under his direction, the team went from decent to having an undefeated season, two years ago.

Well, back to the story, when Mrs. Carson couldn't break them apart, she called the police claiming that Davey and the man were having sex. Of course the way she worded it was that Davey was seducing the man. What she didn't know, what no one else knew, was that Jared was also gay. When the police arrested him, Mrs. Carson went nuts, saying that they were arresting the wrong person. For the next two days life for Davey was unbearable. But what came next was worse."

Again she paused, not only to wipe away the tears, but to gather her thoughts. "This is the part that only Davey really knows all that happened. Two days after Jared's arrest, Davey was walking home from school alone. About a mile away from his house, Davey got jumped by members of the school's football team. I don't know how many, but I believe most of them were involved. The reason for that is not a single one of them came away from it unscathed. Unfortunately for Davey, while he might be a black belt in karate, he is still only a thirteen year old boy. There was no way he could have fought off more than ten boys, all of whom were much bigger than him.

They took him to an old barn out in the middle of nowhere, and while I don't know the details of what went on there, I can tell you this much. For three days, he was repeatedly raped and beaten." She sobbed out the last part, and heard the gasps behind her. She had to fight on though; she had to get the rest of the story told.

"I got involved when one of the neighbors called the cops and told them of the fight. None of the cops wanted to do much about it since it was just some, and these were their words... `Just some fagot kid.' At that point, I called in the big guns." This was when she turned around and saw everyone watching her in rapt attention.

"My eldest son is a captain in the Texas Rangers. When the local wouldn't do anything, I called my son. Less than an hour later, he was on the case, and was calling in support from his fellow Rangers." At this point the tears came back in full force, as she relived what happened next.

"I was with them when they stormed the barn Davey was being held in. Of course, somehow the football players were tipped off and were nowhere around when we got there. What we found there though was something that will haunt me for the rest of my life. Davey was tied, hanging by his arms, from one of the rafters. He had been beaten so badly that there wasn't a single place on his body that wasn't covered with cuts and bruises. But the worst part was the broken off handle of a shovel that they had shoved up his backside." By this point she was openly crying, and had to sit down.

"I... I had never witnessed anything, so terrible in my life. To the day I die, I will never be able to get that image out of my mind. Davey spent the next two months in the hospital, and the football players, well they all had other people providing them with alibis, so it looks like they ended up getting away with it." She paused for a few moments trying to gather her wits. When she looked up, she saw that no one, not even Carlos and Alex, the two toughest looking boys, were dry eyed.

"The minute that Davey got out of the hospital, I brought him down here, hoping that here was far enough away from Amarillo so that Davey could restart his life. He was placed in a group home, since there weren't any foster homes available, and I was assured by the local director that he would get their best case worker, and psychological attention. When I left, I thought everything would be okay for Davey. But I was wrong." She reached into her purse and pulled out an envelope. She looked at it sadly for a moment, before continuing talking to the group.

"Yesterday morning, I got a letter from Davey. He told me of the way he was being treated in the group home. He, he told me that the psychologist he was seeing was telling him... that everything..." Her voice drifted off as she fought her anger, trying to keep control. "She said that everything that had happened to him... was his own fault because he was gay. She, she told him that he could only expect the same thing over and over again if he continued on his perverted life of sin." She was openly sobbing, but was determined to finish the story.

"When he begged the social worked to not make him go back, she laughed and said that Dr. Buchanan was the best Doctor to treat him." She was going to go on, but Carlos stopped her.

"What was the name of the doctor?" He almost shouted. Everyone else in the room except for Carlos's mom either looked shocked or extremely angry.

Alex jumped up from where he was sitting at because he has heard enough. "Enough, that lady shouldn't and cannot get away with this. She knows what she is supposed to do and what she is not supposed to do. She had to have told Garret about Davey. That's the only thing that makes sense!"

"What do you mean?! Who's Garret?" Sally asked leaning forward in her chair.

Carlos was the one that answered though, since Alex was stalking around the room like a large cat about to strike at his prey. "Garret Buchanan, his mom's a shrink, and everyone knows it. He's not only the biggest homophobic asshole in the school, he was also the leader of the group that gang raped Davey and supposedly had plans to kill him."

"That bitch needs to be taught a lesson!" Alex fumed, not caring who else was in the room. He'd gotten a lot better since he'd met Jacob, and had a whole lot more control then he used to, however, knowing that this lady took what Davey told her in confidence; hell told her expecting to get some help with his own demons. Knowing that this lady took all that, and told her son. That was just too much. Who knows if she knew what Garret was going to do, and if she did, did she help set it up? All this was what was running though Alex's mind when he suddenly ran right into someone.

When Alex raised his head about to yell at the person who got in his way, he saw Matt's loving eyes staring back at him. The anger started to melt away, but when Matt leaned forward and met Alex's lips with his own, every last ounce of anger simply slipped away from Alex.

Knowing his boyfriend the way he does, Matt knew he had to calm Alex down before he goes storming out the room after that shrink. "Okay everyone, Alex more you than the rest." Matt shot Alex a look that he understood as you better listen to me and listen well. "We cannot sit here or stand here getting all angry like this. We need to take things one step at a time.

First we need to be here for Davey. I don't know what would be going through my mind if what had happened to him in the last couple of years happened to me. One thing is for sure I would want to wake up to happy faces, not angry ones. So let's drop this for now, and deal with it all some other time, and somewhere where Davey could not possibly over hear it." Matt took a deep breath as he saw everyone nodding in understanding and agreement.

"The other thing we need to do is do things the right way. What I mean is we need to go through the proper channels to deal with Dr. Buchanan. Hopefully when all is said and done, she will be out the door and cannot do this again to another kid like Davey."

Sally stood up straight and for a moment, all anyone could see is a momma bear that's gonna protect one of her cubs. "You leave the good doctor and the social worker to me. I might be out of a job by the time this is over with, but I can bring them both down, and down hard." Her look softened as she looked around to all the kids in the room.

"What you guys should worry about the most right now is Davey. He's gonna need all of you there for him. He might not know any of you yet, but he needs friends. Who will understand him and not judge him. He needs to know that you will all be there for him no matter what, and most importantly, he needs to know he is loved." She paused as she met everyone's eyes one at a time. "Can you guys do that for him? It won't be easy, but it's what he needs?"

Alex looked her right in the eyes with a half smirk. "Ma'am, I know you don't know us yet, but hopefully you soon will. Once you really get to know us, you'll find out that what you just asked us is not something that is difficult for us. When you meet Jacob, you will understand that Davey could not have found a better group of people to be with."
