"My offer to you probably seems very harsh and cruelly rude, but if you worked in my industry and saw what really goes on behind the scenes then you would judge me very differently. Such offers are made in show business everyday; it is the normal way things are done. Even in sports, especially when it comes to advertising contracts such things are becoming more and more common. In recent years the whole sports industry has tended to mirror practices that are common in the entertainment industry.
Sports events are becoming more and more like entertainment events. Top athletes are becoming more like the stars of entertainment. Crowds of paparazzi clamber after them. It is a big, big business nowadays. It's not enough anymore for a sportsman or woman to simply achieve the elusive pinnacle in their particular sport; they must also entertain the crowds that watch them and inspire them.
Sports stars are also playing a role in the sex and erotic fantasy industries as well as in their individual sports. As an example of these diverse needs is for instance women who play beach volleyball . They are strongly encouraged to show as much skin as possible. The organisers of course know that this makes it more interesting for the spectators to watch. It also guarantees them more spectators, and more spectators equals more income from advertising.
Nearly all sports have been commercialised completely. In recent years all major sports have been operating under nearly the same rules as the entertainment and show business industries. Why should a viewer go to a sporting event just to see which team or which athletes win a competition. Each person will be conscious of, and focused upon his own individual wants and needs. This means it is only interesting for the spectators if they can identify with one of the teams or with one of the athletes personally. If their favorite team or athlete wins then it is as though he himself has won. For the spectator this personal identification is crucial.
When the public learns a lot of information about a team or their favorite athlete, they feel part of them. Only through a very detailed reporting and extensive interviews with spectators is this identification possible at all.
The same is true in show business. This in turn means that everyone who works as an entertainer has to reveal as much as possible about themselves to the public with nothing allowed to be hidden. The more a person reveals about themselves to the fans the more ardent the fans will become. The more extreme the means of connecting with your fan base the greater is the certainty that they will show their approval of you.
The publication of nude photos is a good way to grab the attention of the fans you want to connect with. Of course no one wants to admit this publicly. However, in many other areas both the advertising and the entertainment industries are both pretty hypocritical when it comes to the theme of nude photos and sexual favors. It is a fact that many actors and models both male and female sometimes have to prostitute themselves in order to get the most highly coveted and lucrative jobs.
Whatever the case, the public wants to have heroes to look up to, and they need to get to know you before they can admire you. Professional athletes today need advertising contracts. They have to earn these endorsements.
Are you, Matt, willing to give the public what they need? A little shock value goes a long way in getting you noticed", I said.
In cinemas there is a stripper movie titled "Magic Mike" with Channing Tatum, Matt Bomer and Alex Pettyfer. The film is based on an idea the actor Channing Tatum came up with. When he was a 19 years old guy he worked as a stripper before he became a famous movie actor. My thesis is quite clear therefore,Tatum is now so successful because he was always ready to really give everything with no taboos or holds barred.
The difference between a mediocre film and a great movie depends crucially on the actors and the semi-erotic scenes in that movie. At the outset every film is very risky commercially and at the same time a capital intensive investment. The more erotic scenes in a film the lower is the risk of producers rejecting it.
I could go on for hours to give you enumerate instances where actors, athletes, singers and musical performers have consciously used nude photos of themselves in order to either enhance their career further upwards or to kick-start it going again.
Many paparazzi shots really are not secretly shot photographs, but they have been very well stage managed and planned in advance. This is what the public does not know because people want to keep up appearances of propriety. The best example of this is the fashion industry. The fashion industry outwardly has a serious look about it, but every insider knows exactly what dirty tricks are used behind the scenes.
Matt, I am giving you a further five minutes of thinking time. I am going to go into my office to make an important phone call. When I come back I need to know what you have decided."
I got up and went out of the room.
Matt spent the next five minutes going over all the pros and cons in this mind that he could think of. Matt had listened carefully and could not resist concluding that I was probably right on most aspects of what I had said. How important was all this to his athletic career?
I actually waited for about ten minutes before I re-entered the room again. I had my digital SLR camera in one hand and in the other a contract and consent form. The agreement described exactly which photos should be released. I nodded my head by way of confirmation.
"Okay then, we have a deal", Matt gave me his hand to seal the agreement.
"Fine Matt, I am glad that you've decided to do this. Now please read this contract and consent form I have already prepared. Do it slowly and carefully. If you agree to all that is written down in it I would then ask you to sign it. One copy is for you, and the other one is for me. Then we can take the photos immediately."
The contract and consent form was very short and very clearly written so that it took Matt just a few minutes to read it through and put his signature on the Contract & Declaration. He put his copy to one side and gave the other to Mr Somerhalder.
"And now ... how do you want me to pose?" asked Matt.
"Please go and stand over there in front of the window and then slowly take off your clothes. When you're completely naked, massage your penis until it is fully erect. I will take pictures of you all the time while you are stripping. I will give you directions as we go along. I will also show you how stand so that you present yourself to best advantage for the photos.
