How many times a week does the average person cry? I've heard many different numbers; some told me every day, others said they cry at least couple times a week. I asked myself when the last time I cried was, and had to think long and hard. I still haven't come up with an answer...
I let out a deep, long sigh. Only a heavily burdened soul could make such a noise.
I wiped down the table in front of me before slinging the tea towel over my shoulder. The restaurant around me was filled with the noises of clinking glasses, clattering silverware and the dull roar of people talking over dinner. I walked back into the kitchen to bring in my current order, before I checked out for the night.
"I'll see you later Lou," I called across the kitchen to my boss.
He nodded my dismissal and I walked out of the restaurant to the back parking lot. The crisp autumn air hit me as I made my way to my car. I opened the door to my convertible and hopped in, taking off as soon as the engine roared to life.
I pulled up to a stop light beside a car full of teens. They started the extremely clichéd, "My cars better than yours. lets race" ritual, by revving their engine loudly. I smirked at the driver---a cocky teenage kid. With a flick of my wrist his steering wheel slowly changed into a black and white sea snake. It continued to slither up his arm, causing a terrified look to grace his face. His eyes met mine in a mutual understanding of my mutant abilities.
I smiled at him and the snake apparition disappeared into nothingness. He sped off through the red light going from zero to sixty in under eight seconds. I smelt the smoke from his screeching tires.
<Alex you ass! Quit power tripping and get your ass home. One of these days you're gonna get yourself caught and put in a medical lab somewhere!> I heard my best friend Cassie's voice echo in my head. She was telepathically chiding me for showing off.
<Awe, but Cass I can't let punks like that run around. It's against my constitution!> I laughed back at her.
I drove the rest of the way home forgetting to shoulder check at least twice. I got to the front door, checked the mail, and got inside.
Cassie would already know I was home, she was a telepath so naturally it was a bitch to try and sneak up on her.
She was listening to music in her room so I went and flipped on the T.V. Nothing good was on so I surfed the net for a couple of hours.
<Hey Cass come in here a sec?> I sent to her.
A few minutes passed and Cassie came out of her room. She had a pair of black pajama pants and a black braw on her flawless body. The hard wood floor creaked as she crossed my room towards me.
"This better be good I'm missing the top twenty for this," she scowled before pulling up a chair next to me.
"Check out this site," I told her, referring to the Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters home page.
She was busy reading so I left her for a few minutes to go grab a lemonade from the fridge. When I came back she was on the phone.
"Who are you talk..."
She cut me off with a wave of her hand. I waited patiently for her to hang up. When she did she breathed a sigh.
"Alex I think it's important that we go to this school,"
"What?! You hate organizations and institutions."
"Yeah I know," She sighed, wiping a piece of brown hair out from in front of her cherry-wood coloured eyes, "but who knows how strong we could be if we had some instruction? I want to be powerful Alex. Moving shit around with my mind is fine but I want to learn to protect myself from these spycho Friends of Humanity denominations."
I nodded in response and left the room. She followed me into my Zen green coloured room. I pulled out a couple of suitcases and began to pack my clothes and some of my personal belongings.
"I'm up for it if your up for it. No more of this child’s play with teenagers at stoplights, let's train find out how deep our abilities run." I spoke as I shoved some random mix CD's into a University of Saskatchewan bag.
Shortly after, Cassie left to go pack her own things. I finished up in my own room and grabbed the cordless phone.
555-7584
"Hello I'd like to book a flight for first thing in the morning."
"Yes sir, may I have your full name and final destination please?'
"Alex James Moore and that's to New York, U.S.A"
"Alright sir is that a round trip?"
"No ma'm, It's two adult, one way tickets."
"Alrighty let me just check for you here," she said. I heard typing in the back ground for a minute before she replied.
"I can get you a flight departing on Saturday November 6th at 3h00?"
"That's 3am this morning?"
"That's correct sir."
I checked my watch and noticed that it was only 10:13pm.
"Yes that would be perfect. Thank you very much," I said excitedly.
"Your very welcome sir, you will be traveling with West Jet airlines. We recommend that you come 45 minutes before your departure. Please make sure you have a photo ID, government identification and a passport as this is an international flight. Thank you for flying West Jet Airlines and have a good trip."
I got off the phone just as Cassie ran from her room. She didn't even bother to slow down before she hugged me so we fell back on my bed laughing.
"I'm so excited we get to go!" She laughed.
I rolled my eyes and got up to make a few more phone calls. I phoned work to let them know I'd be quitting(bad work ethic I know I know), and I called my parents at their party to let them know my plans. They were thrilled that I was going to the school (which apparently had a good reputation). I had them make the necessary arrangements with my school to let met transfer.
In case your wondering Cassie had lived with me and my parents for a year now since her rents took off on her when she was sixteen.
Cassie and I watched T.V for a couple of hours to kill the time. Before we knew it the time had reached 1:30am. So we got up and called a cab. A bright yellow taxi showed up as we turned off all the lights in my house. Darkness engulfed my childhood home before we shut the door. I followed Cassie out to the car and threw our bags in the trunk.
"Airport please," I told the cab driver as he hit a few buttons which then in turn caused a few beeps to pierce the air.
I heard the cab driver sigh as he pulled a U-turn to go to the free way. I looked out the window and watched giant snowflakes fall from the sky. I would miss Canadian winters. The cab drove us to the airport and i paid the hasty fair of $32.70.
We walked into the busy Saskatoon airport. People milled about catching flights and picking up their baggage. Cassie went to grab our tickets and I headed to the bathroom. I hate airport bathrooms especially the 'ribbed condom' machines and the 'breath freshener' dispensers. I looked into the mirror and moved a few strands of my messy, multi-tonal brown hair. It hung down a bit over my tan face and jade green eyes. I guess you could say I was attractive. Cassie said it was why I got away with being such a shit disturber.
Two men came in the bathroom as I was looking in the mirror. You know that feeling you get when you know something isn't right, but you ignore it anyway? I started to feel trapped by their threatening presence. Before I could react the taller of the two grabbed me from behind while his buddy helped usher me into a stall.
"Get the fuck off me" I spoke gravely.
I grabbed the smaller one around the neck and looked into his eyes. They held a cocky stare until I started to crush his mind telepathically. His eyes rolled into the back of his head and he slumped to the floor. The taller one behind me began to strangle my neck but I flicked my hand and a hundred snakes or so rose pushing the tiled floor apart. They began to slither and crawl over the man until he let me go, frantically trying to get the poisonous black mamba snakes off of him. I flicked my wrist and they disappeared. He was visibly shaken when he looked at me, I heard his thoughts about how I must be some mutant freak. I mentally fired the hell out of his central nervous system and he joined his comrade on the floor.
I walked out of the airport and saw Cassie waiting for me. She knew exactly what happened and stayed to keep a look out while i was dealing with the assholes in the bathroom. She knew if I needed her help I'd let her know. We grabbed some donuts from Googie's and then boarded the plane. Poor Cassie shook with nervousness, she hated flying. I reached over and grabbed her hand and she cast me a scared look.
<You'll be fine hun> I sent to her as I used my empathic abilities to send calming emotions to her. She fell asleep a few minutes before the world blacked out for me as well.
So that's the first chapter. A little short but I have to start somewhere.
If you like it send me some feed back or I won't write anymore! -J.T
