Xander Rosse-Chapter 2: Family Reunion:
Within minutes of my arrival at my fathers house some of my questions were answered. He walked out smiling, so yes, I assumed he was happy to see me. You might think this naive, but I have studied human behavior and they rarely are able to conceal their emotions. Not only that, there was a group following him which included a man who looked almost exactly like him except younger, a pretty blond, and 3 children. So yes he would introduce me to them, haha, can you say awkward! The looks on their faces were the best of all, shock and confusion, I'm guessing due to my yellow tank! This is a matter that must be dealt with soon as I cannot expect to come off common commuting in such a dreadful vehicle. If I had it my way I would be driving myself, I guess I will have take my insistence a step further. Janet told me that it is customary to obtain government approval to drive in America, I will have to have her look into getting me approved.
As I was preparing to exit, I saw a familiar girl step out of a black suburban. It was Mia, one of my father's personal bodyguards, I could already smell trouble in the air. Before I could even get out Mia had my dad pinned to the ground and a gun pointed toward the rest. Talk about a bad first impression!
"What is the meaning of this Mia" I asked bewildered, "This is my father you are hurting!"
"Yes, my lord, I am making sure everything happens on your terms and no one else's. Your father sent me to be your companion for the duration of your stay." she replied still driving her knee into my father's back.
"That is unnecessary Mia, you will no longer take action without my approval first unless I am being threatened. And while in America you will refer to me as Xander. Do I make myself clear?" I said in as much of an authority tone as a 16 year old teen could.
"Yes, my lor. . Xander, sir!" Mia replied getting off my father and holstering her gun.
She then bowed and kissed my hand further embarrassing me as I heard snickering. "Mia" I whispered to her, "apologize and then check with Janet for orders."
"I apologize for handling you harshly." Mia told my father then turned and was talking to Janet before any response could be given.
"Shit! Are you okay Jimmy, who the fuck is that kid!" my father's brother questioned.
"Yes, I'm okay. Although my pride is a little hurt!" he said laughing. "I didn't even know I was going down until it was too late! I believe she is my son's protection, so at least I don't have to worry about his safety, haha!"
"Yes, she is" I cut in, "sorry, I didn't know she would react that way towards you. She's just really really into me not being touched. Sorry"
"Don't apologize for others, Xander. Now come here, let's see if I can hug you before I'm tackled." my father said smiling.
I stood there, so he came to me and I let myself be hugged. I am still too mad to hug him back. I can tell it offended him, as he pulled away I saw irritation in his face. I hope he is irritated, serves him right! I guess my emotions betrayed me, that or I'm really ugly, because his followers seem to be glancing at one another and scrunching their faces up.
Before I could dwell on it too long my father spoke up, "Xander, this is your Uncle Alan, your Aunt Judy and your cousins Justin, Topher, and Linda. Everybody, this is my son Xander!" All at once everybody started telling me hi, my uncle shook my hand and my aunt hugged me as did Topher and Linda, Justin just kind of waved. I also got the chance to see them clearly now, it was obvious Justin and Topher are twins, hell you could say I was seeing double. They are the same age as I am with light green eyes and blonde hair, they have a couple inches on me though at my 5'9" and we have about the same build, slender but with muscle definition. Linda on the other hand has blue eyes and blonde hair, she is about the same height as I am but she is a year older. My aunt is an older copy of Linda, but just as pretty. My uncle looks to be at least 5'11" with brown hair and light green eyes with a muscular build. Now I know I have Rosse eyes, it's a little creepy as if I'm looking at multiple people but also into my own eyes, eh.
At this point I can see Mia out of the corner of my eye. . . On the roof? Mia Mia Mia, now this girl is amazing, an oddball yes, but amazing none the less. She is seventeen, but looks a little younger, although in mind some would say Mia is 164 years old. Mia comes from the extinct civilization of the Moon Deity. Her ancestors thrived in the Amazons until colonist introduced an overseas virus into their population. Within a year her people died out, and with them the knowledge and location of the Amazonian Moon Temple. Unbeknownst to anyone, a small portion of their people survived and made homes for themselves in nearby villages, worshipping the moon in secret. While acclimating to modern practices, they continued to pass down the traditions of the moon priestess' to each generation eventually leading to Mia's induction into the priesthood. While I tend to treat Mia subservient, she is actually like family to me. She is one of the few to remain constant in my life. She's basically the only person I know who treats me as an individual instead of like a division of my father.
"Boys" my aunt announced, "help your cousin get his things inside, he must be exhausted from his flight. I know I'd be!"
"I do not need any help, actually..." I started only to be interrupted.
"Xander! You shouldn't be rude when people are just trying to help you! Help the boys carry your stuff, they know where your room is!"
The twins climbed into the limo while I was being unnecessarily lectured. If he was not so rude, interrupting me thinking I was the rude one, then I would have been able to inform everyone my one bag was already unloaded. I decided to let them figure it out on their own and headed inside. Janet followed me into the house, she looked comfortable in our surroundings and I hope that I am giving off the same facade. However, I am not comfortable, I already miss my home and am looking forward to being alone as soon as possible.
"Xander, would you like me to prepare you anything?" Janet asked surprising me. "Yes, a full meal. I am famished! We should have stopped at one of those fast food stores." I replied.
I sat down at the kitchen table as she began to inventory the area. At this time my family walked in and mostly headed to what I assume is the back yard. My father flashed me another irritated look, "I don't mind you eating if you're hungry. But don't eat too much, we're barbequing in a lil bit." he stated and then continued outside.
My cousins stayed behind. "Where's all your stuff?!" one of the boys asked heated.
"Mostly in Romania." I replied
"You don't have to be soo sarcastic, jerk!" he went on, "You know what I meant, I haven't ever met any Romanians before but they can't all be that stupid!"
"Justin!" Linda chastised, "He just got here, try to be nice. What's up with you?"
Before they could continue I pointed to my bag Janet sat on the counter "There's my stuff. I tried to tell everyone I did not need help since it was already unloaded but no one listened." I said.
"You only have one bag? Why? What about school, you can't wear that everyday!" Justin exclaimed "Who paid for that limo? Uncle Jimmy! You just moved here to spend his money, you expect him to buy you a whole new wardrobe and everything else?!"
"Justin! Calm down! I'm sure it's not like that. Right Xander?" asked Linda.
I broke up laughing and they looked at me as if I was crazy. I sat there in hysterics wondering how I should answer. I couldn't tell them the truth, that was for sure. I thought about confirming Justin's accusations just to entertain myself for awhile but decided against it figuring it best to sleep in a drama free area for awhile. I decide to go with a half truth, since those always seem to be the best.
"Sorry, I did not mean to laugh at you" I started "It's just I've been watching American tv shows for like a month to prepare and this feels like I stepped right into the plot of one! Let me start by saying no your Uncle did not pay for the limo, my other father did. And I only have one bag because I figured American fashion would differ from Romanian fashion so I planned on purchasing everything I needed here, here. And with MY credit cards, not your Uncle's money. Lastly, I did NOT move here to do anything, let alone spend someone's money. If I had any say in the matter I would have never left Romania!"
"Then why are you here?" Justin persisted.
"Because someone killed my mother and made threats against my life. My father thought I'd be safer in America." I replied.
Justin looked sad for a moment "I'm so sorry. No one told us about your mom, they just said you were moving here to go to school."
"You're sorry!" I laughed "What for? I am pretty certain that it was not you that killed my mother. Your pity is not needed here, keep it."
"I'm sorry you had to go through that, I don't know what I'd do if someone killed our mom." Justin said.
"Well, however you feel, would you excuse me. I am hungry and would like to eat before my food spoils." I said with distaste. I will have to keep an eye on Justin. He seems to think I need his approval when it is the other way around. I could end him so easy. They went outside leaving just Topher and I. In our heated debate Janet had wondered off after finishing my meal.
"Is it okay if I hang out with you?" Topher asked "Your food looks really yummy."
"To critique me?"
"No. To hang out with you. Just because I look like Justin doesn't mean I think like him."
"In that case, would you like to share my meal? The steak is rare but I could have Janet cook it some more you would like." I asked.
"I'll have it the way you like. I'm pretty open-minded, I'll think about it like sushi." Topher laughed.
"Then I hope sushi is good..."
"You've never had sushi? I love it! There's a great place by the promenade you'll have to try."
Topher and I sat there eating, it took longer to eat than I am used to since Topher never ran out of things to talk about. He told me everything he knew about the promenade like which stores are his favorites or which he does not care for and what to eat in the food court. I learned that different theatres did not show the same films, that the older ones transferred to what he called the cheapos. That it is uncool to refer to them as films or a theatre, they are simply movies or the movies. It also became clear to me that Topher was either a tremendously happy person or a tremendously unbalanced one as every other thing he said was followed by a chuckle or a full out laugh. It also took longer because as much as he talked, he also listened. Unlike people who tried to keep uncomfortable silences filled, when he asked me a question or expected me to comment on one of his anecdotes he had no discomfort waiting until I spoke. So in turn. Topher heard which television shows I favored and which I did not, he learned what my favorite dishes were to eat and that however uncool the words I used were that coolness was not my objective.
As Topher put away our used silverware I felt an odd sensation, not only did I feel more comfortable after our talking, I enjoyed it. This was not the feeling that I have felt from talking to anyone before, not from my father or even from Mia entertaining me with the flying creatures. I am not sure what brought this about, but I plan to figure out the feeling and secure it. If I keep anything from here when I return home it is going to be this.
"This one's yours" Topher explained "You've got your closet, your bed, your dresser, and your window" he finished with a laugh.
"Okay, now where is my washroom?" I asked confused.
"You mean the bathroom? Right passed the linen closet on the right. You know, in the hallway."
"It is not connected to my room?" I asked while looking out the window and then checking out the closet. "And where am I expected to keep all the clothes I plan to buy?"
"There's a bathroom in the master bedroom, but not in yours."
"I am to walk naked through the hallway, what if there's a draft?"
"It's called a towel or a robe, And why would there be a draft? I mean, a draft, come on. Really?!" He said smiling.
"Yes a draft! They happen, the word draft does not have a fictional meaning!" I stated annoyed "As for this dresser I have never folded anything in my life and I do not plan to start now. It is just absurd, why cause dreadful creases when it can be bypassed by hanging them up? And this closet would barely fit a weeks worth of clothing in it!"
"Calm down, Xander!" he said still laughing "it's not that bad. I'm sure uncle has an iron it get out all those dreadful creases."
"Topher, I do not see the humor in this situation! I would rethink that smirk of yours if I were you." I stated dryly "Just when I thought my day could not turn out any worse I had to walk into this room."
"Boys!" we heard my father call, "food's ready! First come, first served!"
As I sat by the pool nibbling on a hotdog, I could not help but notice everyone staring.
"The water looks nice." I said trying to alleviate the tension.
"Can you swim, Xander?" Topher asked.
"Yes, swimming is, was, part of my daily regime. I enjoy it immensely."
"Well, this is your home now." My dad said, "feel free to swim whenever you like. Just don't drown!"
"Highly unlikely!" I stated which seemed to recall the tension. "I just meant that since I have been swimming everyday for the last six years that I doubt water to be my enemy."
For some reason everyone started laughing at this. At this point Mia came outside.
"Xander, sir" she started, "Everything checks out fine with one exception."
"And that would be?"
"The school. I would feel more comfortable if you hired tutors to home school you." she said.
Before I could answer my aunt Linda interrupted "The school is perfectly safe. All my children go there and they're just fine. Personally, I don't see the need of even hiring you or that driver. It must cost a fortune and I doubt that any local problems Xander had in Romania could follow him here."
"Not to be rude, Aunt Linda, but what you see has no bearing in this matter. Mia is not hired, she is indentured so she has no monetary cost. As for the driver, my father in Romania insisted and the cost of it is pocket change to him." I stated and then turned back to Mia "Your comfort is not my concern, I will go to school."
An hour later my Uncle and his family left after helping my dad clean up. It was just pass ten at night so I decided I should retire early due to the exhaustiveness of the day. Tomorrow I will need to go shopping as I need new clothes, I should probably get a cell phone, and I definitely need a new ride! Looking myself over in the mirror I thought about the style of clothes that I wanted. As much as I want to fit in I plan to go all out for my clothes, I will not be seen as common.
"Beautiful!" I said blowing myself a kiss in the mirror laughing. I smiled staring at myself as I brushed my black hair from blocking my light green eyes. I love the color of my creamy tan skin, it looks amazing against any color I wear. I also loved my slight build, I always thought swimmers were sexier than body builders which is why I swam everyday to achieve the body of a swimmer. About the only thing that disappoints me is my height of 5'9'', I would love to grow just a few more inches. I was brought out of my daydream as I noticed the steam build up on the mirror.
After finishing my shower and drying off I forgot the placing of the washroom and had to quickly run to my room. As my head hit the pillow the last thing I thought was I hope tomorrow brings a better day.
