Chapter Two (Joey) Whispering Your Name
'He once told me how he felt Did it just so I wouldn't hear it from someone else There was a note he wouldn't know But he still hoped that you would grow And when you didn't he was brought to me, in pain
But he keeps whispering your name He keeps on whispering your name Like he's just waiting...'
It is a beautiful sunny morning in New York. The hotel coffee shop is mostly empty as Joey surveys the scene. It is early, too early for JC to be up and around. Joey checks his watch and takes a deep breath. He walks over to the booth where JC is sitting and plops down across from him. JC looks like crap he thinks. Unshaven, sunken eyes, Joey wonders what Justin could possibly see in this guy. Joey orders coffee from the waitress and JC then sends her away. He blows into his coffee, hoping to cool it.
"You summoned me?", Joey begins sarcastically.
JC narrows his eyes. "You know why we're here."
"Yea, I know."
Both look down at the table.
Joey remembered the first time he saw JC and Justin together off of TV. At that club in Orlando, where Chris had brought them to talk about forming a singing group. He remembered the way Justin's eyes had lit up when they were introduced. He had smiled at the young blond and sat next to him all night. He knew JC had tried to keep him out of the group in the beginning. It had always been subtle, nothing ever clearly expressed but an attitude of we could do better. But Joey knew Justin wanted him in and surprisingly Chris had been emphatic about his joining. JC had backed off. Joey guessed that JC had a thing for Justin but he was sure it would never happen. JC was too uptight. Justin responded to Joey's flirting eagerly. Joey was confident that he and Justin would get together but he wanted the timing to be right. He had a lot of living to do.
Joey had figured out he was bisexual in high school. He liked and dated several girls but also had a couple of secret relationships with guys on the side. He was still experimenting to find out what he really wanted. Orlando's theme parks had turned out to be great big smorgasboard of sex. Guys, girls, all threw themselves at his feet. He sampled the wares and enjoyed it all until he joined the group.
Those early days had been the best. There hadn't been much money around but they had a great time together. Every day was a new adventure. Their first trip to Europe, their first fans, first autographs, the travel. It had all seemed to be a fantasy come true. They all hung out together and Joey was with Justin constantly. Justin finally came out to Joey when they were in South Africa. He told him that he was in love with him. Joey was stunned and unsure about what to do but Justin overpowered him. The setting was perfect. The beautiful beach and ocean and glamorous hotel all but screamed romance. Justin pulled Joey into his bed and made love to him. He let Joey inside him and at that moment Joey found love. The two became inseparable.
Nothing had been the same after that. Joey and Justin decided to tell their bandmates about the relationship but agreed to keep it quiet for the sake of their careers. Lance and Chris took it in stride but JC had looked sick. Joey couldn't help feeling slightly triumphant. JC was always putting him down. Now he had what JC most wanted. But Joey wasn't really ready to settle down. Within a year, he was fooling around with both men and women again, but Justin always forgave him and took him back. Joey figured it would always be that way. He knew Justin was the love of his life, and he wanted to spend the rest of his life with him. There just were so many other good-looking guys and gals around. All were available to a sexy pop star. Inside he knew that if Justin ever did what he did, he would kill him, but he found he could live with the double standard quite nicely since Justin never pressed the issue.
JC's suddenly wild lifestyle bemused even Joey. He and Justin would talk about it sometimes late at night and Justin would worry about AIDS and other dangers for JC. He couldn't understand why JC had never told him he was gay after Justin had confided so much in him over the years. It hurt but Justin didn't let it stop him from being concerned for JC. He just couldn't understand what was driving JC, but Joey did.
The merry-go-round went on for a few years. The success became greater and greater. America fell to the boys charm and upbeat dance-pop. Flush with money and fame, the great salves of celebrities' pain, they partied at clubs and dreamed of even greater things. The need to stick together was greater than the tensions pulling at their insides. Who knows how long it might have gone on if it hadn't been for one night. Kelly confronted Joey and informed him that she was pregnant. He had known her for years and they had had an off and on relationship he had kept from Justin. Joey was always careful with his partners because he never wanted to bring anything home to harm Justin. He was tested regularly but accidents happen. Kelly was insistent that it was his baby. She intended to keep it and she wanted him to marry her as well. Joey refused to maary her but agreed to support her and the baby. Kelly had always hated Justin. He had the talent and the fame and Joey too. Her jealousy led her to force Joey to tell Justin about the baby or she would tell him herself. Joey tried to keep juggling his increasingly complicated life but ultimately he knew Justin would have to know. He believed he could make it right, that Justin would forgive him and accept the baby in their lives. After all, they had talked about surrogacy or adoption before.
He was wrong. He had never seen Justin look so devastated in his life. In that moment, he would have given anything to have never cheated on Justin even once. Nothing was worth the pain he was causing. Justin fled into the rain. Joey tried to chase after him but lost him. He called Justin's home repeatedly trying to reach him but got no answer. When Chris called and told him about Justin's suicide attempt, Joey wanted to kill himself. He needed to talk to Justin. He needed to make it right but JC wouldn't let him in. Joey threatened to smash the house apart but it was too late. JC was in control. There was a smug look in JC's eyes that burned in Joey's soul. He was sure he could get Justin back but he would have to bide his time.
There was a new album to record and a tour to plan. Their careers couldn't be stopped just because of a personal crisis. It was arranged that Joey not be in the studio at the same time as JC or Justin. Meanwhile, his baby was born and little Brianna instantly melted her daddy's heart. Joey wanted little to do with Kelly but the contact was forced because he loved his new daughter so much. His parents were happy that he had 'straightened' out although both his brother and sister saw the pain behind the doting eyes of the new father. Justin refused to see him or the baby. Joey was growing discouraged about being able to find his way back into Justin's heart. Maybe he had finally gone too far. He was lonely and had no one to talk to. Even Chris and Lance, as supportive as they tried to be, were appalled by his behavior to Justin and the consequences that had resulted. Joey thought about quitting but was determined to stick it out.
Tour rehearsals were the beginning of the end. Justin, though a pro, had always been a terror during rehearsals. Filled with self-doubt and expecting the worst, he got tense and irritable, and the only one who could calm him was Joey. Joey had a trick of coming up behind Justin and wrapping him in his arms and whispering to him. You could visibly see Justin tense and then watch it wash out of his body until he was relaxed and ready to move on. After a couple of days, it was clear JC wasn't capable of doing the same thing. His own perfectionism drove Justin further into self-doubt and chronic sniping. Joey stood silently as Justin's rages and mood swings escalated. Johnny pressured him to help get Justin under control but Joey knew that he had caused the problem and that he couldn't fix it. JC's rages against Justin caused Joey to clench his fists but he remained on the sidelines. Everyone was feeling the tension when the stage malfunctioned and Joey's leg was trapped. A bolt shot through it and cut him to the bone. Justin ran to Joey's side and held him in his arms until an ambulance arrived. Justin followed Joey into the ambulance. Joey had a vague awareness of JC watching as they drove away. rode to the hospital with him as JC watched with arms folded.
At the hospital, Joey was wheeled into the emergency room in agony. All he wanted was Justin by his side but Justin wasn't allowed in the emergency room. The procedure was completed quickly and his leg was stapled together. In the recovery room, Joey's mom and dad came to him first. When he asked for Justin, they told him he had left with JC. They brought Kelly in and when Joey was moved to a private room, he was able to be with his daughter. Joey feared that Justin's reaction to his injury had been an instinctive one and that he really was finished with him. Joey vowed to give up on Justin and to let him go with his life in peace. He had screwed his own life up and he couldn't fix that. All he could do now was try to be a great dad for Brianna and hope Justin could find a new happiness on his own. Everyone welcomed him back except for JC when the tour began in earnest. Joey performed professionally and gave the audience his best. Still, anyone could see that the loose camaraderie of the early days of the band was gone. A stiffness and discomfort pervaded everything they did.
In bed alone, Joey found himself dreaming of a house in Florida with Brianna in her swimming pool and Justin playing with her. He always woke up when Justin would turn to him and smile and say, "Daddy's home."
