When You Least Expect By Josh Blake

Chapter 34

Several days passed with no decision from Savanna. Braden and I didn't want to push her and risk missing the opportunity to have another child, but we were getting nervous.

Savanna was truly the perfect house guest. She cleaned up after herself, did her own laundry, and refused to let Jordan clean her room. He explained that he was there to take care of those things, but she said she didn't feel right letting him do it at our expense. She wanted to pull her own weight.

I came home one afternoon about a week later to smell delicious food cooking. I expected to find Mom in the kitchen, but I found her sitting in the den reading a book instead.

"Mom? What's cooking that smells so good?" I asked.

"You'll have to ask Savanna. She insisted on making dinner for the family tonight. She won't even let me help her," Mom said.

"Is that you, Mr. Patterson?" Savanna shouted from the kitchen. "Dinner will be ready in about an hour. Will Braden be home by then?"

"He should be, yes," I said, still a bit perplexed.

"Good! I want everything to be perfect!" she announced. Mom just shrugged and went back to reading her book.

"It is nice to have someone else do the cooking," Mom said. She was in her seventies now, and cooking was harder on her than it used to be.

"Wow! What smells so good?" Braden asked as he walked into the den where Mom and I sat. He leaned down and kissed me before falling onto the sofa beside me.

"Savanna is making dinner," I said.

"Well, it smells amazing. Maybe she should make dinner more often!" Braden said. Mom looked over the top of her book at Braden.

"I didn't mean it like that, Mom," Braden said. "I just meant her cooking smells great. But so does yours."

Mom laughed. "I'm just messing with you. Besides, I've never seen you turn your nose up at any of my cooking!"

"Josh, Braden, hello!" yelled Bonnie as she came in the front door.

"What are my parents doing here?" Braden asked. He was as perplexed as I was.

"I called them," Mom said. "Savanna said she wanted the whole family here, so I called them."

Braden and I got up and hugged Bonnie and Mark. Despite them living so close, we didn't see them as much anymore. Since Austin went off to college and Bonnie and Mark both retired, they traveled a great deal. Braden and I had such busy schedules that our plans rarely aligned.

"Where's little man?" Bonnie asked. "I haven't seen him in way too long!"

"I'll get him," Braden said. "He's probably in his room playing."

"Jack, Nana and Pops are here," Braden yelled down the hall toward Jack's room.

"Nana! Pops!" Jack yelled as he ran into the room. He ran first for Bonnie, jumping in her arms. Then Pops got his turn to pick Jack up and hug him

"Dinner is on the table, everyone!" Savanna announced. We made our way toward the dining room. I was not prepared for the feast that Savanna had made. There were honey glazed pork chops, French string beans with shallots, scalloped potatoes, glazed carrots, and yeast rolls. I had no idea that Savanna was capable of making such a meal!

"Savanna, this looks amazing!" Mom said, taking the words right out of my mouth.

"If it tastes as good as it looks, we may just have to keep you!" Braden said.

We all filled our plates with food, and it was indeed as good as it looked.

"Where did you learn to cook like this?" Bonnie asked.

"My grandmother taught me before she died. I used to cook at her house all the time. I want to go to culinary school someday. My dream would be to open my own restaurant."

"I think you could absolutely do that," I said. "With cooking this good you'd have people coming from miles around."

"You all are probably wondering why I did this," Savanna said. "I honestly just wanted to say thank you. Mr. Patterson, if you hadn't walked in that night when you did, I don't know where I would have gone. God sent you. I just know it."

"I just did what any decent person would do," I said. "This food is amazing, and I truly thank you for putting together such a special meal."

"Well, that's not the only reason I did it," she said. "I want this evening to be one that we all remember. I've prayed a lot about my situation. And I know that I am not ready to be a mother right now. I have too much left that I want to do. I don't want to have a baby while I can't even take care of myself."

We all watched Savanna intently as she continued her story. I reached over and took Braden's hand. He squeezed my hand back.

Savanna continued. "I came from a very conservative family. They're all gone now. My dad died when I was young, and my mom died of cancer when I was ten. Granny raised me, but she's been gone a few years now. Granny was good as gold, but she was old-fashioned. I'm rambling, I know. But my point is that Granny wasn't able to see what love looks like in a household like this. In the couple weeks I've been here, all I've seen is love. The way you all pour your attention into Jack and make sure he's taken care of is something that I wish all children had. Especially mine." Savanna rubbed her stomach for emphasis.

"I've decided I want to have this baby. And I want the two of you to be his or her parents," she said.

There was a moment of silence around the table as what Savanna had said started to sink in. I was still holding Braden's hand. I looked over at him and he had tears in his eyes.

"I get to be a dad again," Braden whispered.

"So do I," babe. "So do I." I hugged Braden. Then I got up and hugged Savanna. I held her and cried.

"Thank you. Thank you so much. I promise you won't regret this," I said.

"I know I won't," Savanna whispered. "I know I won't."

"Does this mean I'm getting a little brother?" Jack said loudly, causing us all to laugh.

"Maybe, buddy," Mark said. "But you might get a little sister instead. Would that be okay?"

Jack pondered that idea for a moment, then wrinkled his nose. "Girls are yucky," he said. "They have cooties. But I guess if she was my sister, it would be okay."

While Savanna's decision to allow us to adopt her baby was great news that excited us all, we got some bad news around the same time.

"Josh, sit down. I need to tell you something," Mom said one afternoon when I came home.

"What's wrong, Mom? Are you okay?"

"I'm fine, dear, but it's your father. He died," Mom said. I sat on the sofa in shock for a few seconds. I hadn't spoken to my dad in over five years. He had given blood when I almost died after being shot by Lucas's father, but he went back out of sight and didn't try to contact me. I knew that he and Mom still spoke from time to time, but he made no effort to try to talk to me.

"What happened?" I asked.

"Heart attack. The neighbor found him out by his truck. Honey, we have to plan the funeral. There's no one else to do it."

I drew in a deep breath and exhaled. "I know, Mom. I know. Let me wrap my head around all of this and then we'll start making arrangements. Where is he now?"

"Funeral home. Chapel Crest. The same one we used for your grandmother years ago."

"I had some meetings scheduled for tomorrow that I need to get out of," I said. "Let me call my assistant and let her know that I need her to sit in and keep the ship afloat for the next few days while I deal with this."

"What's going on?" Braden asked as he walked in. "Why are you both so gloomy?"

"My dad died," I said.

"Oh Josh, I'm sorry," Braden said, sitting down beside me and hugging me close to him.

"I'm fine, really. I mean, it's not like he cared anything about me," I said. Neither Mom nor Braden responded. I don't think they knew what to say.

The next morning, Bonnie picked up Jack to take him to school. She agreed to pick him up after school and keep him until we made it back home as well. Mom, Braden, and I made the hour and a half drive to the funeral home where my dad's body was. I had tried to get Braden to go to work, but he insisted on going with us for moral support.

Luckily, despite their divorce, Dad had left Mom as the beneficiary on the life insurance. Mom was able to quickly find the policies in the house once we got there, then we headed to the funeral home.

I let Mom take the lead on making all the arrangements. She knew what Dad would like. Frankly, I didn't care too much. I was just there for Mom.

Dad died on Sunday evening and we scheduled his funeral for Wednesday at noon. There would be a service at the funeral home followed by a procession to the cemetery. It would be a simple service for a simple man.

We debated whether or not to take Jack to the funeral. Jack had never met my father, and we ultimately decided that he was too young to be exposed to death. Mark and Bonnie were planning to attend the funeral to support Mom and me, so we had to find someone to babysit Jack. Savanna offered to keep him, but she was scheduled to work and would have had to take off. Thankfully, our old friends David and Robert saved the day. Jack stayed home from school and Uncle David and Uncle Robert, as he called them, picked him up for a day of fun.

There was a decent sized crowd at the service. In addition to Mom, Braden, and me, Mark and Bonnie came, as did some of Dad's old drinking buddies. I didn't care for them, and neither did Mom. Some of them kept shooting dirty looks our way. I know I heard "faggot" mumbled quietly. It took all I had to not get up and say something, but Braden put his hand on my knee and kept me grounded.

"We need to go by the house," Mom said as we were leaving the cemetery.

"Why?" I asked.

"We have to start cleaning things out, but we should secure anything valuable. I know he had some guns and things that could be worth something," Mom said.

"I really can't do this right now, Mom. I just can't," I said.

"Then drop me off and let me tend to some things, then you can come back and get me," she said.

"I can't leave you there alone," I said.

"I'll stay with her, Josh. Drop us off and then you go ride around a little bit and clear your head. I'll call you when we are ready," Braden said.

I dropped the two of them off and then just started driving. It's funny that I had lived in this area almost my entire life, but it no longer felt like home. Before I knew it, I was driving down my old street. On a whim, I pulled into Tammy's driveway across from my old house.

Tammy came to the door and said "Lord have mercy! I know that's not Josh Patterson standing there!"

"It sure is!" I said. "It's good to see you, Tammy."

"Come in, honey! Where's Braden? Tell me what's new in your life? How's Jackson? What are you doing here anyway?"

I filled Tammy in on everything in my life. I told her about the new baby coming, showed her pictures of Jack, and told her about my dad passing away. She was sorry to hear about it. She told me all about the man who had bought my house. They had turned out to be good friends. The nosy old lady next door, Margie, had died. Tammy missed her and missed finding out everything that was happening in the neighborhood.

All too soon my phone rang. Braden was calling to let me know that he and Mom were ready to go. I said my goodbyes to Tammy and prepared to go pick them up.

"Josh, please come back and visit more often. I need to see you more than once every few years!"

"I'll do better, I promise! You could drive over and see us sometime!"

"I might just do that. You be safe, now!"

I pulled up at Dad's house to find Mom and Braden waiting on me. Mom was carrying a bag with some things in it. I didn't ask any questions and she didn't offer any information. She just put the bag in the back seat and then climbed in the truck.

"We can come back in a few days or weeks and start sorting all this out," Mom said.

"Mom, I really don't get why you care so much."

"Josh, I gave that man the best years of my life. I don't approve of how he treated you, but he had his good traits."

"I honestly don't care about anything in that house," I said. "Call Salvation Army and let them have it."

"He left it all to you, you know," Mom said. "He wanted you to have it."

"What?" I said.

"The house. And his truck. And everything in the house. And all his money in the bank. It's all yours," Mom said.

I didn't ask any other questions and Mom didn't offer any more information. The ride home was nearly silent.

David and Robert agreed to keep Jack until tomorrow. It wouldn't hurt him to miss one more day of school. Braden was going back to work, but I was going to stay home. I'd go get him and spend some time with him.

When we got home, Braden and I went up to our room. Without saying a word, both of us took off our clothes and headed for the shower. Once we were in there, we started washing each other like we had done so many times before. Braden's cock got rock hard while I was washing it. Without saying a word, I dropped to my knees and took his throbbing member in my mouth.

"Ohhhhh," Braden moaned.

I sucked him and stroked him while giving the sensitive head of his cock some attention with my tongue. When I felt like he was about to cum, I pulled off and spun him around. I parted his hairy cheeks with my hands and gazed upon my prize. The hairy, pink pucker that had brought me so much pleasure over the years was winking at me. I pressed my face into his hairy crack and devoured his hole. Braden moaned aloud as I worked my tongue into his orifice.

"Josh," Braden panted. "Please fuck me."

"Let's take this to the bed," I moaned. We quickly rinsed off and toweled each other dry before making our way to the bed. We kissed and caressed each other's bodies the entire way.

Once we made it to the bed we collapsed in each other's arms. I started kissing all the way down Braden's hairy body. I lifted his hairy legs and once again ate his ass out for all it was worth.

With Braden now holding his knees back, I lubed up my cock and pressed against his hungry hole. I don't know if it was due to his horniness or if his hole was just so used to my cock, but I easily slipped inside. After all this time, I still loved fucking Braden's ass.

I pulled my cock almost all the way out and then pushed back in. I repeated this slowly several times before increasing my pace and fucking him harder and faster.

I was sweating. Beads of sweat formed on my nose and dripped down onto Braden. He didn't care. His arms were behind his head exposing his dark, furry armpits. I was so turned on by my gorgeous man. I was getting close to my orgasm. Braden and I had the ability to cum at almost the same exact time, and this time was no exception. I felt Braden's orgasm start right about the time mine did. His hole squeezed my cock as we both started to cum, his gushing out onto his torso and mine flooding my lover's bowels.

When we both came down from our orgasm, we cuddled and kissed. Finally, we just relaxed, wrapped in each other's arms. I felt a safeness and a closeness with Braden that I don't think would be possible with anyone else.

"He's gone," I said. "He's gone and I never got the chance to say goodbye or try to make up with him." I don't know why it was hitting me at that moment. Perhaps it was the closeness I was feeling with Braden at that moment that allowed me to let my guard down and process the situation.

"I know, babe. I know," Braden said, rubbing my back.

I started to cry softly while Braden held me.

"Let it out, babe. I'm here. I've got you," Braden said.

I did let it out. I cried for my dad, but mostly I cried over those lost years for both of us. I cried over his inability to see past a characteristic that was as much a part of me as my hair color or eye color. But mostly, I cried over the relationship that never was and never would be.

I drifted off to sleep in Braden's arms.
