WHEN LOVES COMES - PART 3
The next morning I woke up before Matt. He was lying on his right side facing me. I watched him for a while. I was having some trouble dealing with what we had done the night before. It had been the most wonderful sexual experience of my life, but the fact remained that he was a student in my class. I quietly slipped out of the bed resolved that he and I would have a heart to heart talk at breakfast.
I grabbed a pair of shorts out of the dresser drawer, relieved myself in the bathroom, and went into the kitchen to start the coffee.
I was just beginning to drink my first cup of coffee when I heard the toilet flush. Matt came into the kitchen. He had retrieved his sweat pants from the floor in the living room. They hung low on his hips and didn't do much to cover the remains of his morning erection.
"Morning, Doc," he yawned as he poured himself a cup of coffee.
"Matt, we have to talk about last night."
He set the coffee mug down on the counter top and turned to face me. "What about last night?" he asked in a shaky voice.
"I enjoy having you here, Matt. What happened last night was really incredible, but I'm your teacher, and that creates a problem."
His face lost all expression. "I see."
We looked at each other for a moment, and then he moved away from the counter toward to door into the living room.
"It's been a great week for me, Doc. Thanks. I'll just get my stuff and go back to the dorm."
He went into the bedroom/office where he had his bag and began putting his clothes and shaving kit into his bag.
I followed him into the room, and said, "Matt, you don't have to leave right now."
I put my hand on his shoulder, but he moved away and said, "No, I do need to leave now. Please let me go."
He dropped his eyes and went back to packing his things. I just stood there. I didn't know what to do. I'd obviously handled the whole situation very badly and had ended up hurting his feelings. And what was worse was that my own feelings were running every which way. I wanted to take him in my arms and tell him not to go. On the other hand, he was a student in my class. In the end I just stood there as he packed his clothes pulled on some jeans, shoes and a sweat shirt and walked out of the apartment.
He turned around just as he was going out of the door and said, " Thanks again, Doc. It really was a good week. I'll see you in class tomorrow."
And then he was gone.
I spent most of the day in a deep funk replaying the scene over and over in my mind. A couple of times I moved to the phone to call him, but I stopped before dialing. The apartment seemed empty, and I couldn't concentrate on anything. At dinner time, I opened another bottle of wine, got pretty well plastered and went to bed, but I sure didn't get much sleep.
The next morning in class, Matt seemed to be okay. I was a little nervous around him, but if he was feeling any anger or resentment, he didn't show it. I was glad because we had seven weeks of class left, and it could have been a long seven weeks.
The rest of the semester went by without any other incidents. Matt seemed to just continue on as before. I still had an emptiness in the pit of my stomach every time I thought about him let alone when I saw him in class and lab. I continued to swim laps in the pool in the late afternoon, but I added an early morning jog to my routine. The exercise seemed to help me not think about Matt.
The semester ended in mid-May, and the town seemed fairly well deserted after all the students left. My parents came down for a visit at the end of May. They told me they would give me the down payment on a house if I could find one I liked. That started a wild week of meeting real estate agents and looking at houses.
My parents and I must have looked at more than a dozen places before we found the right one. I knew it was exactly what I wanted as soon as we pulled off the road and went through the woods before coming up to the house.
The place was only about eight miles outside of town, but it was in a very undeveloped area. The house itself was located in the center of nearly ten acres of solid woods so it couldn't be seen at all from the road. The couple who had built the house had carved out about a half acre clearing in the middle of the woods with the back side of the house up against the trees.
The house had cedar siding. It wasn't all that large, but it wasn't cramped either. It had a living room with a big bay window at one end and a wood burning stove at the other. From the living room you went down two steps to the kitchen and dining area. The kitchen was large with a commercial quality gas range with eight burners and two ovens. The kitchen window looked out to the front of the house and the small lawn. The dining area was open to the kitchen with a low counter between the two rooms. The stairs to the second floor also came into the dining area. A large master bath opened off the dining area and also into the master bedroom, and the bedroom also connected to the dining area. A wood deck wrapped around the house beginning at the french doors in the dining area past another set of french doors in the master bedroom. The deck expanded at the end of the house and then narrowed to a boardwalk that went to the end of the garage at the back of the house. The expanded area of the deck had a 6 foot by 6 foot hot tub!
The garage was connected to the house by a covered breezeway that led into a laundry room and then into the dining area and kitchen. On the second floor, there was a small alcove at the top of the stairs that I decided would be my home office and then a smaller full bath and a second bedroom.
My folks and I agreed that this was the best house for the price that we'd seen. Mother remarked that she couldn't see any use for the hot tub, but my dad just looked at me and winked.
I put an offer on the house that evening, and it was accepted by the owners the next day. That started a flurry of activity with the mortgage company. I think they asked for my entire life history and checked every person I could possibly know as a reference before finally deciding I was a worthy credit risk.
Finally, I closed on the house in early August just at the end of the summer semester. I put a notice out on the student bulletin board in the department at school asking for volunteers to help move. In return, I'd provide food and drink.
I didn't know how that would work, but on the appointed Saturday morning five students, including Matt who had taken a summer class, showed up at my apartment to help load the rental truck.
We had everything from my apartment loaded into the truck by noon and unloaded at my new house by five that afternoon. I'd put three cases of beer on ice in preparation for the move, and when the move was done, we all started in on the beer. I cooked hamburgers on the grill, and everyone seemed to have a good time.
Matt appeared to be more relaxed around me than he had been at the end of the spring semester. We even managed to exchange a few bits of private conversation during the course of the day and evening. However, he was the first one to leave after dinner. Two of the guys ended up staying overnight on the floor of the living room because they'd had too much beer to drive back into town.
When we all managed to get moving in the morning, the two guys helped me with the rest of the unpacking. By the end of the day, the house was in pretty good shape. That was a good thing because the fall semester started in another ten days.
That fall semester, I had a new sophomore-level class to teach in addition to the introductory course. Matt was in the sophomore-level course. Our relationship started off formal and correct. Neither one of us made any hints about the intimacy we'd shared.
That football season went well for Matt. He was definitely a star on the team. There was speculation in the student and local newspapers about his future in the NFL. By mid semester, it seemed that all the hype around Matt had started to get to his head. He wasn't working as hard in class as he had before, and he had the stereotypical "jock" attitude. Occasionally, I'd see him around campus with one of the very blond and very buxom cheerleaders. They appeared to be an "item" judging from the body language between them.
For me, the most significant development of that fall semester was that I told my parents I was gay. There was never a moment's hesitation for either of them. They simply said they loved me and would always love me no matter what.
I was becoming pretty comfortable with myself and my life. I enjoyed the students and the teaching. I had other faculty colleagues who I liked as friends.
I also enjoyed the privacy and security of my house. I continued to jog in the mornings, then shower, eat breakfast, and go into my office at school. About three times a week, I'd go over to the gym at noon and work out in the weight room. I also continued to swim at the end of the day before going home.
Once I got home, I'd make dinner, have a glass of wine, and then work or read until ten thirty or so when I'd strip naked, pour another glass of wine, and sit in the hot tub before going to bed around eleven.
If the weather was nice on the weekends, I'd work in the yard and on the house. The house was so secluded in the woods that I often spent most of the weekend naked or dressed just in a pair of running shorts even when I was working outside. When it started to get colder in mid-October, it was a disappointment to need clothes outside so I compensated by being naked almost all of the time in the house.
That fall, I also told a couple of my good friends that I was gay.
I'd met Kevin and Kathy Williams the previous year. They were both on the faculty in the English Department and had arrived at the university the same year as I did. They were in their early thirties with two little girls, Heather who was three and Allison who was ten months old. We became good friends and often had potluck dinners together. Once I moved into my house, most of the dinners took place out there. We'd have dinner, put the kids to bed in the master bedroom downstairs and then take a bottle of wine out and sit in the hot tub.
Kevin was very good looking. He was about my height and weight with dark brown eyes and almost coal black hair with a few flecks of gray hair at the temples. He had a lot of silky looking black hair all over his body and a nice uncircumcised penis which was about four inches long when soft but would often be almost six or seven inches long by the time we'd get out of the hot tub.
Kathy was a petite brunette about five three with a dynamite figure. If I'd been straight, I would have lusted after her body. Neither of them had any problem with being naked in the hot tub so that's the way we spent many Friday or Saturday evenings...naked, drinking wine in the hot tub and talking about our careers, students and campus politics.
I'd suspected for some time that Kevin and Kathy might have wondered if I was gay. Then one Saturday evening in early November, we were starting on our second bottle of wine in the hot tub when Kathy mentioned in conversation that one of her brothers was gay.
"And how do you feel about that, " I asked.
"Hey, it's no big deal," Kevin answered. "He's family and we love him. We had several gay friends back in grad school, and in fact we even fixed Kathy's brother up with one of them. They've been together for nearly four years now."
"I'm glad you feel that way," I said. "I'm gay, too."
"Kevin and I thought you might be," Kathy said. "And you know it makes no difference to us."
As if to emphasize that point she moved over to me in the hot tub and gave me a hug. Kevin joined in the hug which lasted for almost thirty seconds or so.
Finally Kevin broke away from the hug and announced, "Well, coming out is always an occasion for celebration, so I'll go check on the kids and then bring back another bottle of wine."
He hauled his well-formed, hairy ass out of the hot tub and padded across the deck into the house.
We ended up drinking the whole third bottle of wine that evening, so Kevin and Kathy went to sleep in my bed with the kids, and I took the bed in the upstairs.
The three of us were a little hung over the next morning, but we managed to get breakfast for everyone including the kids who seemed delighted to still be at "Uncle Gary's" house.
That Thanksgiving, Kevin, Kathy, the kids, and I started a tradition of having Thanksgiving dinner out at my house. Kathy brought the pies and breads, and I did the turkey and fixings since I had two ovens in the stove. We all stuffed ourselves at dinner, and then settled in to the living room to nap and watch football games on TV.
Thanksgiving was followed quickly by final exams for the semester and then Christmas. I went home to see my parents. We had another big family Christmas. I knew right away that my folks had told some of the family I was gay because one of my uncles just sort of glared at me during the big gift exchange, but just before everyone left, my cousin Alex came over to me and apologized for my uncle, gave me a big hug and said, "We all still love you. Uncle Bob just doesn't know how to handle it right now, but he'll come around. Give him some time."
All-in-all, I felt pretty good about my family. I'd heard too many horrible stories about families rejecting their gay children. My family was important to me, and I didn't want to lose them.
I got back to my house after Christmas just in time for a big snow storm that stranded me for two days. My little Toyota Corolla just couldn't make it through the snow in the drive way. Luckily, I had food in the house, and the power never went out, but I decided right then that I had to get another vehicle.
As soon as I could after the snow cleared, I traded in my old car for a three year old Toyota 4Runner with 50,000 miles on it. Since my old car had over 200,000 miles on it, I felt like I was really moving up in the world. I never got stuck in the snow again.
Matt wasn't in any of my classes that spring semester, and I only rarely saw him on campus or around the department. He and the buxom cheerleader were still hanging around together, and they appeared to be even thicker than before. I decided that our one night over spring break the year before had been a fluke. I was just glad that Matt hadn't complained about me to the dean or department chair.
When spring break came around that year, I knew that the pool and gym would be closed so I went to one of the health clubs in town and took out a temporary membership.
The weather that week was wet and raw. Winter seemed to be hanging on and spring just could not push its way into the countryside. I stayed at my house catching up with grading and planning most of the days, and then I would go into the health club around five in the afternoon. This health club had a well-equipped free weight area and several Nautilus machines, but the locker room facilities were limited. I'd work with the weights for a while then go outside and jog and then return to the weights. I'd finish my workout around seven thirty and then head back to my house for a shower, dinner, and a soak in the hot tub.
On Friday of that week, I'd finished my workout and was headed to my 4Runner in the parking lot. It was already very dark with a cold mist falling from the sky.
I was about to climb in to the 4Runner when I heard a voice say, "Hey, buddy, do you have a coat hanger in your car?"
I looked toward the sound of the voice and saw one of the guys from the health club standing beside a late model Mercedes. I recognized him as one of the "regulars" at the health club. He was around 40 but still very trim and muscular. He had sort of dark blond hair and blue eyes. I'd guessed that he was around six one or six two. He usually worked out in a pair of tight shorts and a muscle shirt that clearly outlined a well-developed chest with a moderate amount of medium brown hair on it.
I went over to where he was standing beside his car. "What's the problem?"
"I locked my keys in the car when I went into the club. I can see 'em there on the seat. Do you have a coat hanger?"
I told him I'd check so I went back to the 4 Runner and after some digging around found one hiding under the passenger seat in front.
I took the coat hanger back to him. He tried to use it to go through the seal around the window; however, on that model, there was no way for the coat hanger to fit around the window seal. After he worked for a couple of minutes, I said, "That isn't going to work. Is there someone you can call?"
"No," he answered. "I've got some spare keys at home, but my wife left town this morning so no one's there."
"Can you get into your house if I drive you over there?"
"Yes, there's a key hidden in the garage, but I hate to have you go out of your way to do that."
"I don't mind. It'll be my good turn for the day."
We climbed in to my 4Runner and started out of the parking lot. The mist had started to turn into a cold rain, and I turned the windshield wipers on.
As I drove we introduced ourselves. His name was Ron Holman. He was an architect and lived in one of the best neighborhoods in the town. His wife had just left for Florida on a week long vacation. He asked if I was new to the health club, and I replied that I'd just taken out a temporary membership while the university's gym was closed over spring break.
"Say, I thought you looked familiar. I've seen you jogging around seven in the morning out on the Old East Road?"
"Yeah, that's me, " I replied. "I do that most mornings before breakfast."
"Well, you look pretty good doing it."
I thanked him for the compliment and began to wonder if he might be gay. I decided that it was unlikely he was since he was married (Don't say it. I know that was dumb reasoning).
Ron directed me into his neighborhood and then into a driveway that led to a large two story white colonial style house. He got out of the car and went into the side door of the garage. He emerged again almost immediately so I figured that the key wasn't really hidden very well. He waved at me and then disappeared around the back of the garage. He must have gone in a back door of the house because I saw a light go on in the house. He came out the front door, climbed back into the car, and we headed back to the health club to get his car.
On the way back he apologized again for causing me to go out of my way. He said he hardly ever locked his keys in the car like that, but he had been thinking about a problem with a house he was designing and hadn't even realized that the keys were on the seat when he went into the health club.
When we pulled back into the parking lot the rain was coming down even harder than before. He said that he wanted to repay me in some way for driving him home and asked if I wanted to go back to his house and share a pizza for dinner. I had nothing else to do that evening so I agreed and followed the taillights of his car back over to his house.
He must have had a remote door opener because the garage door opened as soon as he pulled in the driveway. He pulled in to the garage and got out of his car. I pulled in behind him but still out in the driveway, shut off the engine and climbed out of the 4Runner.
By that time he had opened the door into the house and motioned for me to follow him. We went into a laundry room that opened into a large kitchen and family room combination at the back of the house. There were a lot of windows and two sliding glass doors in the family room. Even though it was dark outside I could see a large patio and in-ground swimming pool out the back.
Ron opened the refrigerator, took out a beer for himself and offered me one which I gladly accepted.
"Make yourself comfortable," he said. "I'm going to grab a quick shower before I order the pizza."
He left and in a minute or so I heard the sound of a shower from the upstairs. I wandered around in the family room area looking at the books on the shelves and pictures on the wall.
I was about half way through with my beer when he came back into the room dressed in a black warm up suit.
"I thought you might want to shower before the pizza gets here so I laid out one of my warm up suits on the bed for you. The bedroom's the first door on the right at the top of the stairs."
I thanked him and went to find the stairs as he picked up the phone to order the pizza.
The stairs were in the main hallway off the family room. I noticed a large formal living room off the right side of the hall and a formal dining room off the left. All the furniture looked elegant and expensive. I found the master bedroom at the top of the stairs. It was huge. It probably ran across the entire rear of the house and had separate sitting and dressing areas. A teal colored warm up suit was laid across the king sized bed.
The most impressive feature of the master bath was a walk in shower completely done in ceramic tile with three shower heads. Ron had put a towel and wash cloth out on the lid of the commode for me.
I stripped off my sweaty gym cloths and walked in to the shower. It was almost like being in a locker room shower. I quickly showered and then dried off with the towel. When it came time to pull on the warm up suit, I realized that I didn't have any clean underwear. I hesitated for a second, but I really didn't want to put my sweaty jock strap back on, so I just pulled the warm up pants and jacket on over my naked body. There were a pair of white cotton socks next to the warm up suit, so I pulled those on to cover my feet and then went back down the stairs.
When I entered the family room again, Ron handed me another beer and said, "Well, that didn't take too long. I always thought the best part about a work out was the shower afterwards."
The warm up suit was fairly loose fitting so I wasn't too worried about showing my "goods." I looked over at Ron, and tried to figure out if he had any underwear on, but his suit was also too loose to tell.
We settled into a relaxed "getting to know you" kind of conversation asking questions about our respective jobs, how long we had been in town, where we went to school, and that sort of thing.
The doorbell rang after about fifteen minutes, and Ron went to the front door to get the pizza from the Domino's man.
We sat at the island between the kitchen and family room eating the pizza and drinking the beer. I had to admit that both the pizza and the beer were pretty good, and to top it all off, Ron seemed like a genuinely nice person. He had straight, white teeth and an easy smile that involved his whole face and eyes. There were just the faint beginnings of crow's feet around his eyes and just a few gray hairs in his temples but, like many blonds, it was hard to really see the gray hairs. He had zipped the warm up jacket only up to about the middle of his chest so I was also treated with periodic glimpses of portions of his muscular pecs and the moderate amount of curly hair scattered across them.
We were about half finished with the pizza when we heard the sound of sleet hitting the roof and windows of the house. Ron went over to one of the big windows in the family room and turned on some outside lights. We could see the sleet collecting on the patio.
"I'd probably better get going before this gets any worse.".
"You're welcome to stay here if you want. We've got a couple of spare rooms. I'd hate to have you in an accident because you stayed around in town to help me."
I thanked him for his offer but said that I really needed to get home. I told him that I'd go upstairs and get my own clothes back on, but he insisted that I wear the warm up suit.
"You don't want to put those wet, sweaty clothes back on. Just bring the suit with you to the health club tomorrow, and I'll pick it up from you."
Again, I thanked him, collected my stuff from the upstairs, and headed out the door. As I was leaving, Ron gave me a slip of paper with his telephone number on it.
"Call me when you get home. I'll worry about you until you call."
I promised to call and headed out to the 4Runner. I put the 4Runner in four wheel drive and started on my way. Four wheel drive is great for snow, but it wasn't much better than a regular car on ice and sleet. Fortunately the sleet was rough enough that I got some traction. It took a while longer than I'd expected to get home.
As soon as I was settled in the house, I called Ron's number. He answered the phone right away.
"Man, I'm glad you called. It's starting to get really bad here. Did you have any trouble?"
I was touched by his obvious concern and we ended up chatting on the phone for another half hour or so. I'm not exactly sure how it came about, but by the end of the conversation, we had agreed to meet the next evening at the health club and then go out for dinner. I was to bring a change of clothes in with me and shower at his house before going out.
I went to sleep that night with the sound of the sleet still beating down on the roof.
(To be continued)
