When Fantasy Becomes Reality

Chapter 1: The Realization

At the time I was just an 18-year-old freshman in college trying to get my degree in accounting, not because I liked accounting or anything but because it's what was expected of me; I had to pay the bills after all. Anyways, it was a nice day out although I hated life at that time since it was finals week and everyone was stressed, including me. It's strange that for such a bright, blue skied day outside we had no warning.

They began with bombardments of the surface although we weren't the actual target, from what I've been able to gather about that day is that by attacking us it was meant to draw out their real enemy. Plus, our planet has abundant resources that are valuable even though our own species likes to waste them and pollute the planet, but hey there are worse places out there. Like Hutta. I hated Hutta.

As for myself I was able to avoid the initial damage although none of us had any clue what was going on. I was in my dorm room umm... "doing maintenance" ... when the first blasts hit us. Talk about ruining the mood. Immediately I got dressed, ran out, and was almost floored by what I saw. Have you ever gotten that feeling when you see something you just can't comprehend, the room spins, and you feel like vomiting? Yeah, that feeling is how I felt.

I mean it's bad enough that my college was rubble now, dead bodies littering the ground, but looking up I saw ships... huge ass ships. Later I found out they were Imperial Star Destroyers but even on Earth they are iconic. Shuttles were beginning to land ground troops who began indiscriminately firing, and all I could do is stand there with my mouth open. Turns out Star Wars isn't as much a sci-fi as we thought. Apparently George Lucas was outcast for his idea that all species and all planets should be made aware of the wider universe. Threatened with death he decided it would be best to get as far away from the power struggle as possible. So he ended up here on earth.

Perhaps I should explain more, Earth is not the only planet with sentient life, in fact we are an experiment of sorts; or were at least. A few thousand years ago the Republic decided to try experimenting with human colonization and genetic alterations since they wanted to see if it was possible if humans could make a utopian society without any outside intervention. So a far away planet was found and human DNA was mixed with a native earth animal (the primate) and left to their own devices but closely monitored. The whole experiment was top secret and kept away from the grasp of the Empire who would surely annex the planet if they found out.

So why the bombardment? Well, both sides were fighting on the far side of Saturn (too close to us for the Republics liking) when the Imperial sensors picked up life on Earth. When they found a humanoid civilization they decided to use it as leverage to force the Republic to either withdraw from the region, or to face them head on. It didn't matter whether or not the civilization was advanced enough yet.

So while I was looking up one of the Star Destroyers exploded and Republic vessels began to appear as well. They had decided to fight. Now you had ground fighting happening all over the surface but mainly focused in majorly populated areas; like my campus for instance. What I soon realized were Jedi Knights and Sith began fighting all around my campus, and I just stood there in shock. That is, until a large shuttle appeared across the courtyard. Out stepped a rather imposing man dressed completely in black with a red lightsaber in hand. And he looked at me.

Now I don't know if it was the force or if it was simply the fact I was the only one standing in the courtyard, but he slowly began walking towards me and I nearly shit myself. There weren't any Jedi close enough to come to my rescue and none noticed him anyways. The strangest thing then happened to me, my nerves calmed and I began to move towards him it was like something inside me had awoken and I walked with renewed strength and determination. I reached my hand out and out of nowhere a lightsaber came flying towards me, turning on it was a bright blue color. If the shock on my face was anything to go by, the dark figure was certainly surprised, then amused.

"So this pitiful species has developed force sensitivity after all," he said. "Perhaps the Republic has had other intentions here besides making it a petri dish. Very well, you shall die all the same."

His voice was raspy and full of malice, it grated on my bones like steel scratching steel. My mind was screaming "Run away you idiot! What are you doing?!" But my legs continued to smoothly walk me towards him despite my protests. Suddenly he leapt towards me, lightsaber flashing and somehow I began to parry his blows. To this day I don't know it was innate ability and instinct, or sheer luck but I held my own against him. It was then that that sleeping something in me rose and I began fighting back. Slashing, dodging, incredible jumps and backflips we fought relentlessly back and forth.

Slowly his smirk turned into a snarl as he realized that his prey was proving to be more difficult to kill then he previously thought, he raised his hand the same instant I did and we launched the force at each other (or what I could only assume was the force at the time), and both of us went flying across opposite sides of the courtyard landing on our feet. Looking down I saw the dying corpse of a Jedi, he was unlike anything I had ever seen almost looking more fish than person. Our eyes met and with his last dying strength he put into my hand his lightsaber. With both in hand, one blue one green, I again leapt towards the Sith and this time with the advantage. Fighting with two sabers I pounded at the Sith as we began both fighting to kill, leaping far back I looked at the two sabers in my hand and had an idea. Not caring if it was possible or not, I envisioned in my mind both lightsabers molding into one dual bladed lightsaber. Opening my eyes I saw that both the lightsabers had fused together and created a greenish blue lightsaber color.

We reengaged in our duel both sweating and finally, as if time slowed, I saw an opening. With one end of the saber I slashed upwards breaking his lightsaber in two, spinning the blade I firmly planted the other end into his gut. It all happened in the span a few heartbeats, but it was if time had slowed for me. I removed the lightsaber, spun it, and decapitated him the look of shock still evident on his face.

The campus grew silent and every eye was turned to me. I looked up and noticed all of the Stormtroopers began either retreating or surrendering, the battle was over. I fell to the ground, completely exhausted and spent. I glanced up at the sound of approaching footsteps. A tall man, assuming he was a man, came towards me. His skin was blue and he had the two tentacle things coming out from his head, I later learned he was called a Twi'lek. He smiled at me, offered me his hand and said, "I think you'll do just fine" and guided me towards his ship.
