Westlife Romance - Part 27

Shane caught Nicky just in time to prevent him from falling to the floor. After a couple of minutes, Nicky steadied himself and only then did Shane feel safe enough to release the blond boy from his grasp.

"You need to see a doctor, Nix," Shane pleaded.

"I'm fine, Shane. Don't worry," Nicky replied stubbornly.

"You're not fine, Nicky. If you're fine, you wouldn't be in such pain!" Shane argued. "Don't do this to yourself, Nicky! Please!!"

"I don't know what you're talking about, Shane," Nicky answered. "I just caught a chill."

"Nicky!! There are many people in the world who care about you. Regardless of what happened between you and Kian, there are still a lot of people who would be devastated if anything happened to you. Don't put yourself through this, Nicky. I'm begging you!!" Shane prayed that his pleading would change Nicky's mind. He knew how stubborn the older lad could be, but this was no time for compromise. Inwardly, Shane still felt responsible for what happened between Nicky and Kian, and so naturally, he linked Nicky's apparent illness to his "betrayal" of Nicky's trust.

After a moment of thought, Nicky finally agreed, albeit reluctantly. "Fine, I'll go see a doctor."

Shane breathed a sigh of relief as he heard Nicky's response.

"But you're not to tell any of the other lads."

"You've got yourself a deal," Shane answered immediately. As long as Nicky agreed to see a doctor, he would promise almost anything.

That night, sleep again eluded Nicky. But unlike the previous night, his thoughts were not just of Kian and Derek. This time, they included Bryan. He thought about the things that have occurred in the last few days and how his relationship with Bryan had changed. He asked himself whether he had feelings for Bryan. Unfortunately, he couldn't find an answer. These questions kept tormenting his mind, preventing Nicky from getting any rest.

Early next morning, Nicky left the hotel and headed towards a doctor that one of the crew members recommended. Since it was still early, he was the first patient to arrive. Luckily, the doctor did not recognize who Nicky was.

"So, Mr. Byrne, what can I help you with today?" the doctor asked politely.

"Well, lately I've been having a constant nausea and I haven't been able to eat without vomiting."

"I see, how long has this been going on?"

"Well, a few months ago was the first time it occurred. But after that, it was on and off. The last few days, it's been nearly constant."

"Any headaches or migraines?"

"Not really."

"Fatigue?"

"Well, I haven't been sleeping well lately. But I think it's because I've had a lot on my mind."

"Any acute pain or things like that?"

"The last few days, I've been having sharp pains in my abdomen area."

After consulting his notes, the doctor looked up and smiled. "Well, I don't think there's too much to worry about. Usually, these are symptoms of high stress level and lack of rest. What I would suggest is that you take things slower and make sure you get plenty of rest. I'll prescribed some medication to alleviate the nausea and it'll also help you keep you food down."

"So it's nothing serious, right?"

"I don't think you need to worry. But just in case, I'll run some routine tests for you."

For the next hour, the doctor performed various tests for Nicky. By the time Nicky returned to the hotel, the other lads were just waking up. He carefully put away the business card that the doctor gave him, took a dose of the medication and walked to the lounge to meet the other lads.

That day was their first major meet-and-greet event since arriving in the United States. While the crowds were not as big as the ones back in Europe, it was a good showing. The lads mingled with the fans and signed autographs, charming their American admirers and creating a positive impression on the American media.

"So did you go see the doctor this morning?" Shane asked when they had a brief moment alone.

"Yeah, went this morning."

"And?"

"He said it wasn't anything serious. Said it was stress and fatigue and gave me some medication."

"Well, at least we know it's nothing to worry about too much," Shane answered with obvious relief. "You had me scared to death that night."

"Sorry for scaring the hell out of you," Nicky answered sheepishly. "But thanks all the same."

The event took most of the day, but when it was over, the lads had the rest of the afternoon and evening to themselves. When nearly all the fans had left, the lads began to gather their things, getting ready to head back to the hotel before going out to do some shopping. As Shane grabbed his jacket, he heard Nicky's cellular phone ring. Glancing over, he could see Nicky still chatting with a fan, so he answered the phone. "Hello?"

"Yes, may I speak to Mr. Nicky Byrne please?"

"Sure, just hold on for a moment?" Shane walked over to Nicky and tapped his shoulder. "Phone call."

Nicky excused himself from the fan and answered the call. "Hello?"

"Is this Mr. Nicky Byrne?"

"That's me."

"It's Dr. Rosen calling. The results from the tests that you did this morning have returned. I'd like to see you at my office..."
