"Watching You Without Me"
Aaron DeLorean
Chapter Fifteen
"Can't let you know What's been happening. There's a ghost in our home, Just watching you without me. I'm not here." --Kate Bush ____________________________
I dove for the alarm "panic" button on the kitchen wall. Brian dove towards me. Just as I reached for the button, he grabbed my hand, wrenching it up behind my back. He slammed me against the wall roughly. I felt something crack in my mouth.
"Where the FUCK IS HE, FAGGOT?" Brian screamed at me angrily. Blood trickled from my mouth.
"He's upstairs. Speaking of faggots, have you looked in the mirror lately?" I asked bitterly.
"Shut the FUCK UP!" He twisted my hand back further.
The most horrifying cracking sound emitted from my wrist as pain shot to my head and I was swept into nausea.
A.J. shuffled into the kitchen with sleep-ridden eyes. He took one look at Brian pinning me to the wall, blood running down my face. He was instantly awake.
"Alex...Help..." I pleaded out to him, barely more than a whisper.
"What the fuck is going on, Brian?" A.J. demanded, rage clearly visible in his eyes. Brian turned and smiled with just his mouth.
"Well, Alexander dear! There you are! SO nice of you too join the party! I was just about to get rid of the trash!" He exclaimed, grinding his knee into my tailbone. I cried out painfully as a gray fog washed down over me. My left arm was going numb. It didn't hurt anymore. That's odd, I thought to myself disjointedly.
"Brian! STOP! You have no idea what you're doing! Just let him go, and we can talk about this, man." I looked into A.J.'s eyes. He didn't know what to do. All of his rage, his pain, flooded forth into my mind. The Force. Brian snarled and slammed my head into the wall. I heard myself cry out. It did not sound like me. It sounded as if it were coming from somewhere else.
"I'm through with fuckin' talking!" Brian screamed, pulling a boning knife from the kitchen counter, "I'm SO fucking SICK of everybody thinking I'm some sweet church-boy that communes with God every fucking second of the day! Well FUCK THAT! Once the world sees that I've killed the poor little FUCKING junkie FAG, They'll know! They'll ALL know the REAL me!" I started crying furiously. I was not scared. I felt no pain. I only cried. "Then," Brian continued, "We can be together Alexander! We can be HAPPY! So very happy, Alexander. Just like we were meant to be. I've already picked out our kids for adoption, can't you SEE?" he bellowed, his crazed voice echoing off the surfaces of the kitchen, "We can live a perfectly happy life together!" He brandished the knife, holding it to my throat.
I knew that my only hope was the one person I could count on no matter how far apart we were. "NIMM!" I called out inside my head. I knew she would not make it in time, though.
"Alex, please help me!" I said as best I could. I knew he was already trying to find a solution. Brian drew the knife up into the air, and just as he was bringing it down to my neck, A.J. karate-kicked him in the back, quickly grabbing the knife as Brian went down. A.J. rammed the knife into Brian's chest before he had a chance to do anything more. Brian's entire body suddenly tensed, as his mouth gapped open, gasping for breath.
"Alexander," he gurgled out, "Does this mean you don't love me?" A.J. looked shocked,
"LOVE YOU?" he yelled, "You were going to KILL Aaron! That is SO not cool, man!" Brian breathed his last breath; his body went slack, relaxing as Death rushed to claim his soul.
I dropped to the floor as my feet suddenly disappeared from under me.
"Alex," I whimpered as he rushed over to me.
"Sweetie, is anything broken?" He asked worriedly.
"I-I'm not sure." I stuttered out in shock.
"Shhh, don't talk, we need to get you to the hospital."
The alarm suddenly went off, loudly proclaiming the danger that had been thrust into our lives only moments before. Nimm never failed. A.J.'s face began to blur, as the room got darker.
"I didn't know you knew karate." I said evenly as sirens wailed in the distance.
I closed my eyes, and passed out.
