Chapter 41: What Goes On
Flashback:
Sinew and Austin fell through the portals, one after another and finally landed hard on a floating hunk of land, surrounded by fire. Dragons and demons circled them as they stood and immediately began to exchange blows! Fire shook the hunk of rock and they continued to kick and punch until they felt another twinge and suddenly they were shaken from the hell-ish place. They flew again and landed back in the midst of the battle. The defeated demons and the defeated warrior's souls going at it, swords, crossbows, and all kinds of weapons striking. The world shook as the two entities lashed at each other. Austin, bloody and tired, immediately began to fight demons surrounding him, managing to subdue so many of them. He ducked an attack as he somersaulted over a blue demon that looked to be very ancient and kicked the demon in the head, causing him to stumble back into another warrior's sword, as did Sinew, and when they finally hit, it was as if time slowed. Austin ducked a punch that would have surely incapacitated him, then kicked Sinew in the face, causing her to stumble back and she backhanded him so hard he flew several feet back! She zoomed to Austin and picked him up with one hand.
"Kid, you have got to be either the bravest little meat sack, or the dumbest little humanoid piece of..." Sinew chuckled as an arrow hit the side of her head and jammed, not penetrating her head. Austin kicked her and he fell to theg round, " Who in the Frick did that?!" Sinew asked, looking around and her eyes centered on Micah, who smiled.
Austin's eyes darted to Micah, who stood triumphantly, smiling at the accusation she had made. Austin frowned nervously and kicked Sinew's feet from under her and ran as fast as he could, hoping his legs would not fail him. He hoped his slayer powers would help him now, more than ever. As he reached the tall ledge where Micah stood and gathered all the slayer strength he could muster to jump and catch the ledge and crawl to the top, but when he got there, he saw that Sinew was already there, holding Micah by his neck.
Micah turned to Austin as he got there, " AUSTIN..." he choked, " ....I'm not the first soul to die, but I die to tell you that you have to win. This is not the end. Use the orb!" he finished tossing something to Austin as his neck snapped.
Austin looked from Micah's dead soul to Sinew, who just smiled as if she'd just made a snappy comment. Austin, tired and still bloody, breathed a sigh of relief, sadness...of anger and just watched as Sinew pulled back and knocked him off the ledge and how it wasn't smiling. She jumped after him, but before she could make it, Austin felt a hole wrap around him and everything seemed to go black and soon he landed. He heard the voices and that's when he opened his eyes...
The charred reamins of what used to be the Hospital, the lasting aroma of dead demon, the memories of a long fought battle, and the feeling of home. All these things encompassed me as I stood on the debris. The newlwy built city had apparently forgotten the hospital. That was still in shambles. No one had rebuilt it. I struggled to find what I had left there. Some semblence of the innocence I had lef there. It had been about two or three months since I had been to the little town I had began to call home. The demon infested the town. I had, however, gone. I had a question...why keep fighting, keep the faith, when everyone and thing around you had given up? I walked through the street, hoping no one would remember me from before. Not hiding, not running, just hoping to be invisible. There was a scream and I jogged into the cemetary and found a woman sitting on a grave and sobbing.
"Hey, are you okay?" I asked.
The woman turned, showing her fangy-smile, " You just bought yourself a whole lotta trouble." she smirked.
Just then, five hands burst from the ground and I shrugged, pulling out a stake, " Depends how you look at it." I said, taking a stance.
A scream, pierced the air as Kelly ducked a vampire, who slamed into a tombstone with a thud! Oz and Doug ran to the vampire, attempting to fight him, but having no luck. He flung Doug backwards and Kelly ran over and kicked him in the knee, causing him to hop slightly and grab her by the neck! Oz felt a surge though him and sped to the vampire, throwing him a few yards away! Oz looked down at his hands, bewildered and confused. Doug took the time to stake the vampire.
"What the..." Oz asked.
"It's ummm...Just wait until Austin comes back, he'll explain." Kelly said, patting him on the shoulder.
Doug panted wildly, " Ok, he needs to get back now. There is too much evil in this little ass town." he said quickly.
"Good thing we have Gemma and Cale, without them, we'd so be lost." Kelly said.
"We should go and see them." Doug smirked.
"Ummm, yeah, Oz, you gonna be okay?" Kelly asked, hoping for a yes.
"Yeah." Oz smirked, walking away.
"What do you think about that?" Kelly asked.
"I think he misses a certain slayer." Doug said, thinking about it.
"Poor Oz. Poor Austin." Kelly frowned, walking away with Doug, " Poor Oz-stin."
"I died in that explosion, S-s-s-layer, only to be fed off of!" the vampire woman hissed. She wore a white coat that was smeared with dust.
I sighed and rolled my eyes, trying to break the ropes they had bound me with. I was tied to a wooden pole in the middle of the cemetary, listening to vampires who had died and waited for my return. The woman in the coat looked to be the leader. There was also a chubby guy, a rather muscular female, a tattooed male, a battered male, and a teenage brunette.
"I did also," the chubby one said, " The roof fell and I was fed off of."
I rolled my eyes, " Oh god, shut up! Could you just hsut the fuck up! I came here for enlightenment, not to hear you talk about how you died! I didn't save you...you died. So die." I said.
They all looked at me in shock.
"So what, the fight of the century was going on, I couldn't save a hand full of people because I was busy saving everyone else." I frowned as I swung my hands, stripping the rope and splintering the wooden pole. I ducked under a punch, kicking the chubby male vampire and dropping into a footsweep! I swung back and brought my leg into a roundhouse, kicking the teen's stomach and jumping into the air, punching down on the muscular female and sidekicking the battered male! I did a spin-kick, causing the leader to spin in the air and fall to the ground, I rushed to her, kicked a splinter into the air and staked him, causing her to burst into DUST! As she did, so did her gang, " Huh, well...at least they're not talking."
"Maybe they talk into the wind." A warm, soft voice said.
I turned to see Lestat, " Hey, you! How'd you get here?" I asked.
"The quesiton is not how I got here, but who are you?" he asked.
"Whatever." I said.
Lestat chuckled, " You are unique." he said.
"Yeah yeah, first and only male slayer...blah blah bl..." I said, rolling my eyes.
"You are the only person who would come for answers, and when you get them and the new question arises, you turn from it." he said.
"Oh. Well, the question is always the same...the answer always changes, so, I'll just make up my own."
"Did you get what you came for?" Lestat asked.
"I think so." I said simply, " I...." I looked at him carefully, studied him.
"What is it?" he asked.
"Shouldn't you try to kill me? Isn't that what you do?" I asked.
He only smiled. I turned to walk away, only tos ee him standing there.
"Nice trick." I said, looking over to a grave. I lost my breath...it was Micah's. I walked to it and sunk to my knees, pulling out what he had given me. I sat the necklace down and it shimmered in the moonlight. Hope.
"It is beautiful." Lestat said.
"My friends need me." I frowned.
"The world needs you." Lestat smirked.
"The world?" I asked.
"Buffy Summers is the queen..." he said seriously.
"...I keep hearing that. She's the queen and I'm the King, right? But what does that mean? It doesn't make sense!" I said angrily, " She did a great thing, making us all slayers, but we're not meant to be here all at once. It doesn't make me feel safer, it makes me more worried that..." I stopped.
"You're alone. That youre isolation will be the end or that you will transform into what you have sworn never to become?" he asked.
"It's in my blood. I stand against the forces of darkness everyday, but what happens when we can't fix what's wrong? What happens when everyone loses hope? When I finally realize who I am, what if it's not a good thing?" I frowned, walking past Lestat, " What happens when they die?"
"They?" Lestat asked.
I stopped, " My friends." I frowned, walking away.
Sinew sat around, watching the modern soap opera. She was fascinated by the humans and their 'emotions' and all their crying. It fascinated her how much a waste of space this place was. Moving through the dimensions, she had longed to be in her own body. To be the demon she was. This body was a waste...a fabulous waste, but a waste. She was just excited over a movie called 'Forrest Gump', it seemed to parody its own history and the lack of knowledge by people.
"I see you're enjoying As The World Turns." Mrs. Lilith Young said quietly.
"Yes, I find these pathetic pukes Luke and Noah strange...yet, oddly erotic." Sinew smirked.
"Oh, umm, yese, well...I have a grandson who is...like that." Lilith said nervously.
"Oh, is he that little piece of scum whose ass I kicked?" Sinew asked.
"Yes, the slayer." Lilith smiled.
"A slayer? I knew he was stronger than a champion, but..." Sinew smiled to herself.
"So, I guess you're not afraid he could foil the plan?" Lilitha asked.
"No, she is not." Mr. Young said.
"The way I figure it, I'll kick his ass, take over the dimension and have a massive, massive Hell bash. They say L.A.'s in Hell...we should take a trip." Sinew said, sipping her drink, " Glory was an idiot, no wonder we expelled her."
"You underestimate him." Mr. Young said.
Sinew stood, " And you, pathetic worm, underestimate me. I'm not Glory. I'm way more unconventional...I'm going to ground his bones to dust. So, where does the slayer hang nowadays?" she asked, with a smile.
"This is Rome, let's have some fun." Lestat smiled.
I sighed and looked over at him, " I am having fun, see, me, without you." I smirked, " Shouldn't you be out sucking on some girl, or guy's, neck?" I said, pulling out my phone and looking at the caller I.D. and placinging it back into my pocket.
"Why won't you answer your phone?" Lestat asked
"What?" I asked.
"Your friends?" he asked.
"...What?" I asked.
"That isolationist slayer thing." he said.
I started to say something, but stopped.
"It's in your nature." Lestat smiled, snuggling on my neck, " We must all do what's in our nature."
I exhaled, " What is your deal? Why are you following me?" I asked.
"You fascinate me." he smirked, " The first and only...ever. Something erotic about it."
"Erotic?" I sighed, " Ugh, vampires."
"What are you searching for?" he asked.
"What are you?" I asked.
"Just a vampire." Lestat said.
I turned the corner and stopped quickly, " It all kind of begins and ends in the same place. I was here once, right here." I said, walking into the empty club where I first met Micah. The sign said closed for repairs, but I ignore it. I walked to the table where I had first met Micah and placed a stake there, " Some heroes never get spotlight attention...No one ever knows about them."
Lestat caught on, " Micah? Who was he?" he asked.
"A friend." I smiled, " Someone caught in the crossfire."
