Chapter 37: Learner
Then....
Connor stood at the window, looking out into the sunny streets of Los Angeles. There was something that he couldn't figure out. A problem that wasn't so obvious. Austin bounced through the door, dressed to move.
"Connor!" Austin said, " You're not packed. We need to hurry."
"Yeah, I ummm, I'm on it." Connor smiled weakly.
I smirked and kissed him, leaving from the room.
Now...
"So, the Connor guy called and your friends didn't tell you?" RJ asked.
I nodded.
"Seems like you still love Connor." he said.
"No. Not the 'In' kind of love." i smiled as we walked through the cemetary.
"So, Oz is a wolf?" he asked.
"Put a were prefix in there and yeah, you got it." I said.
"Doug is a witch?" he asked.
I was about to answer when a demon popped out of nowhere and tackled me. I rolled over and watched RJ try to hit it with an axe, but it knocked him back and jumped at me. I kicked it's feet from beneath it and Rj threw me an axe and I decapitated the demon, causing it to dry up.
"Yup. Wiccan." I said, standing.
"Are you alright?" he asked, looking at a scrape on my arm.
We both looked at each other and chuckled.
"I guess this stuff turns me on." RJ smirked.
I smirked back, " I'd never noticed that before...I mean..." I said, letting him kiss me. As we kissed, I walked backwards, finding somewhere for us to lie down. We bumped into a crypt and began to make out passionately.
Then...
"All I'm saying is that he doesn't seem happy about moving." kelly said.
"Hmmm." Oz said, reading the paper.
"But maybe there's a reason behind it." Doug argued, " There's always the fact that maybe he's tired. We did just save the world by almost getting crushed by the First Evil and now we have to pack up and move?"
"To a better place." Kelly said.
"She has a point." Oz said, sipping his coffee.
"Our fearless leader is just walking into a trap." Doug said.
"I am?" I asked.
They all turned to me.
"Come, surely you can see the signs here. Us, plus a new town equals dead us." Doug replied.
"What signs?" I asked.
"The big one with the dazzling lights that says 'this is a big ass trap'." Doug stated.
I shrugged, " Well, any place we go, we're at a slight disadvantage. Demons are looking for us. We're a threat now." I said.
"I'm all for moving. There'll be actual shopping stores with no demon dust on them. Maybe a new start." Kelly smirked, taping boxes.
"He doesn't want to move." Doug said, " I'm just a casual observer, but even I see that."
"You're wrong." I said, leaving.
Now...
"So, what are we going to do?" Doug asked, sitting in a pentegram with Gemma.
"We're going to perform a spiritual healing for you." she chuckled.
"Spiritual Healing?" Doug asked, looking around, " This is no spiritual healing!"
"Ok, more like a power show." Gemma said, grabbing his hand, " Poisedon, God of the Sea, I call upon you to annoint us with the power of all Oceans, calling upon the Gods for restoration and power!"
"What? No!" Doug said, feeling the power shoot through him and the candles went out, leaving them in darkness. His hair turned dark green and he looked at Gemma, his eyes glowing a blue-ish green in the darkness," Foolish Witch!" he shouted, sending her sliding across the floor!
"What the..." Gemma screamed, " Stop it! You're scaring me!"
Doug tilted his head, " I'm having fun." he smirked.
Then...
I sat outside, watching kids play in the street. I relfected on our latest fight. We found ourselves in a game against...well, it's not a short story. But I was worried. Was I leading them into something bad? Or doing something really good?
"You did that." Oz said, sitting down beside me.
"Did what?" I asked.
"Saved them." Oz said, " If we hadn't won, who knows what would have happened to those kids. Or those people, or those." he said, pointing them out.
"I know Connor is less than thrilled, but he's....He would do anything for me." I said.
"Yeah, he would but he's really scared to go." Oz said.
"Why?" I asked.
Oz stared at me.
"I have to ask him?" I asked, looking from him to the kids, " Are you scared?"
"Can't be worse than Sunnydale." OZ said.
I looked at him again, " You're my watcher and I need to tell somebody...I'm scared. I'm terrified because I just confidence here. I just realized that I was doing something more than pissing demons off. I was killing them too." I joked.
Oz chuckled.
"I'm one of the only things standing between them and the world." I said.
"How does it feel?" Oz asked.
"Lonely." I said, looking back at the kids.
Now...
"Ok, alright Xander." Oz said, hanging up.
"What's up?" Groo asked.
"Buffy's been attacked." Oz said, " And while their sorcerers were sensing magicks, they found something weird in this town."
"What?" Kelly asked.
"A power spike." Oz said.
"So, this is more magic than a shoe sale, huh?" Kelly asked.
"Any specifics?" Groo asked.
"No, just that it wasn't new energy." Oz said.
The phone rang.
"I'll get it." Kelly said, going to pick up the phone.
"So, should we get Austin for this one?" Groo asked.
"You're the only one he's talking to, so..." Oz said.
"Have you tried talking to him?" Groo asked.
"We're all a little seperated." Oz said, " Doug's doing the Wiccan thing, Kelly and I are demon hunting, and Austin is...well, we're not sure."
"He's demon hunting." Groo said, " That's where I found him the other night."
"Good to know." Oz smiled.
"You guys, our situation just went from worse to Hell on Earth." Kelly said fearfully.
Then...
Connor stood before his bed, packing his bag. I walked in and kissed his neck and he turned and kissed me back.
"Hey, you're packing!" I said enthusiastically.
"Yeah, I..." Connor stammered, " I love you, you know that, right?"
"Connor...what..." I said, losing my smile.
"I love you and that's why I'm doing this." Connor said quickly, " I'm not going with you to Vengeance."
I stepped back, " Why not?" I asked.
"Because I love you." Connor said slowly.
I shook my head, " What? You're making the kind of sense that isn't. You're not...why?" I asked.
"Because I love you." he repeated quickly.
"Or is it because you think it's a bad idea?! Because you think I'm making a wrong decision." I asked, " Is this your way of breaking up with me?"
Connor was silent.
I nodded and turned.
"Austin." Connor said.
I just walked out of the room.
Groo walked through the lovely cemetary, wondering how there were so many graves when the town was so new. He, Titan, knew that it was obvious. He had taken Groo's form when he found out that Groo was in Los Angeles when it went to Hell. It was the perfect opportunity for Titan to make his move. He'd thought of being Connor or Spike, but Austin had seen them already when L.A. went to Hell and it had screwed his plan up. He stopped when he heard the moans from around the corner.
"Ahhh, RJ...RJ, Oh MY GOSH!" I shouted.
Groo looked around as we finished and waited until we had gotten up and buckled up and we walked around the corner.
"Groo?" I asked.
"Yeah, something's happening." Groo said.
"What is it?" I asked.
"Doug." Groo said, " We need to hurry."
I looked at RJ, " You should..." I started.
"I'll go with." RJ smiled.
"Are you sure?" I asked.
"Yeah, let's go." RJ smiled.
"Let's go." I said, turning and running off with them.
"Is everyone packed?" I asked, making sure my bags were all there.
"Yup." Doug said, putting an arm around Kelly.
"Me too." she smiled, " Where's Connor?"
Oz looked from them to me.
"He's not coming." I said, trying not to cry.
Oz walked over and hugged me, " Are you okay?" he asked.
"No." I said, wiping my eyes, " I'm so far from okay that it's not okay."
"Are you ready to go?" Oz asked.
"Wait." Connor said from the top of the stairs.
"You changed your mind?" I asked.
Connor looked at me, then the floor.
"Right." I said, picking up my bags.
"I don't want you to be mad." Connor said.
"Why not?" I asked.
"Titan. He says that he cursed me, if we go there together, everyone around us will die, then eventually us." Connor explained.
"What?" Doug asked.
I chuckled, " So...Is everyone ready?" I asked.
"I love you." Connor said.
"You should stop...our friends could die." I said, leaving, with everyone right behind me.
Now...
When we got there, Kelly was in the corner of the room with Gemma, who was bleeding from cuts on her arms, and Oz was being thrown across the room! Doug was moving towards Gemma and Kelly when Groo ran over and grabbed his shoulder. Doug turned and smiled.
"You presume to touch me?" he asked.
"That's nothing." I said, standing in front of Groo, " Wait until I punch you." I smirked.
Doug frowned, " Really and who are you?" he asked.
I tilted my head and smiled, " I'm the slayer." I said, punching him in the face.
He chuckled and touched his lip, " I shall kill you!"he said, " There'll be nothing left when she comes."
"You can try." I said, ducking his punch," Wait, who's coming?"
Groo rushed him, but he threw Connor backwards. RJ grabbed the axe I used to kill the demon before and started at him.
"NO!" I shouted, " He's still human...ish."
RJ dropped the weapon and Doug raised his hand, throwing RJ backwards!
"RJ!" I said, running and kicking DOug in the chest. He slid back, " Any ideas on how to evaporate Father Water?"
"Break the pentegram! Be careful, he's got the pentegram guarded with magicks." Gemma said.
I nodded and rolled under his fist, catching a foot to the face and skidding backwards down the floor. As I laid on my back, I looked up to see the sprinkler system. I looked over at Doug, who was fighting Oz, RJ, and Groo.
I stood up, " Hey, greenie! Bet you're not a real God!" I said.
He threw all the guys off him and marched towards me. When he got close enough, I tried to kick him, but he caught my foot. I smirked.
"What will you do now?" Doug asked.
"Whatever I need to." I said, using him as leverage to jump to the ceiling and activate the sprikler system. The water washed away the pentegram!
"You think you know, what's to come? You have no idea." Doug said as his hair and skin turned to its original color and he fell to his kness. Kelly and Gemma ran to us. The water beat down on us, I looked at Doug, who was on his knees, weakened. I turned and walked out of the room with RJ. Kelly and Oz checked him out as Gemma stood on the side.
I stood at the window, looking out into the sun. There was things that I needed to figure out. I was sorta out of it, but I had just beat a God...not fully a God, but still. But he said that he wasn't the worst. The worst was yet to come. My thoughts were interrupted as RJ came into the room with a towel wrapped around his waist.
"Hey you." he said, wrapping his arms around me.
I smiled, " Hey." I said, looking out the window.
"She's coming." RJ stated.
"Who's coming?" I asked, giving him a confused glance.
"...The highel, the one you know. The big Bad that came before most other big bads, the terrifying one that banished the glorious one." RJ continued, shifting into a chinese woman that I felt as if I knew, " It is upon us."
"It?" I asked.
My dream ended as quickly as it had began and I felt RJ's strong, powerful arms slide off me as I sat up quickly and looked out the window, into the sun above. There was something very scary about the dream, and oddly, the sunshine.
"So, have you talked to him?" Doug asked.
"No. He left kinda quick." Kelly said, " I'm sure he was lumpy."
"No, he wasn't." Oz said.
"He'll come around, I actually don't think he's mad anymore. I just think he's adjusting." Groo said.
"Yeah, me too." Doug said.
The doorbell rang
"I'll get it." he said walking to the door. He opened the door, " Gemma?"
"Hey," Gemma smiled, " Can I come in."
"No." Doug said quickly.
"Oh. Well, I just wanted to say sorry. I..." Gemma said.
"Um, we can't be friends anymore. We can't hang out...and...." Doug said.
"Your friends don't want me around." Gemma said dejectedly.
"No. I don't want you around." Doug said seriously, " You should go now."
"Oh okay, I...." she said, but he slammed the door, " Sorry." she said, turning and walking back down the path.
