Robert spoke up. "I think that dinner will be ready very soon. It would be wise not to make the guys wait too long."
They could almost feel the tension from Ron when they had parked and were walking up to the front door. They had decided that Ron would phone the hotel to let them know that he was in Buffalo and would register later.
"We're home."
Lucas came out and welcomed Ron. Then Liam came into the entry area. He stopped and looked directly at Ron. Nothing was said for seconds which felt like minutes. "Mr. Corbett welcome to our home. Lucas and I have a good bottle of wine open and dinner is ready." He shook hands with Ron and then turned and hugged his partner. He looked at Thomas. "We have a wonderful pot roast in the slow cooker with lots of vegetables and Lucas and Robert's special potatoes. Lucas slipped out and bought THE WINE and baklava."
Thomas smiled. "You guys don't fool around when you prepare dinner. Sounds wonderful. Is it the wine from the 5th in Paris?"
"Yes, two bottles, care of Lucas and Robert."
Turning to Lucas and Robert, with affection, "Guys!!! You are impossible."
As they went in to the dining room, Thomas whispered to Robert. "What the hell, Liam was civil. Have they had a bottle of wine while we were out?"
"Lucas and I talked about Liam's possible reaction to your father. I think that what you are seeing is what I call the Lucas effect. He calms me and centres me all the time. He has worked his magic on Liam." Thomas just shook his head in amazement. They sat down to eat. Lucas and Liam brought out the food.
Present
They were seated. Ron looked at the food. "The pot roast smells wonderful and the roasted vegetables and potatoes look fantastic."
Liam looked at him. "Yes, we learned to cook at university and often we could only afford what was on sale. Pot roasts were often on sale. We could make a pot roast last for many meals if it were cooked slowly over a long period of time. Never had to throw one out." Well, Lucas had not been totally successful; this was Liam's first dig at Ron Corbett. Wisely, Ron acted as if Liam was just telling him how they ate.
They started to eat. Ron took his first bite of food. "Liam, my compliments to the chef. This is very good. You must have used wine and many herbs."
"Yes, I figured out how do that later after university. We couldn't afford wine for cooking at university. We could occasionally afford one of Trader Joe's cheap bottles of red." He chuckled. "We can't afford the bottle that we are drinking tonight. That is thanks to Robert and Lucas."
"The wine is excellent. What did you mean when you asked if this was THE WINE from the 5th in Paris?"
Liam continued. "Robert and Lucas' family sent them to Paris in late summer after their first year at university. Robert's fathers joined them a few days after their arrival. They had a great time together. They discovered this wine in a wine shop in the fifth arrondissment near their apartment." Yet another little dig at Mr. Corbett.
"Yes, I met his fathers and Lucas' father and mother at the conference in May. They are very close."
There was general talk and of course, how good the meal was. Liam was a very good cook. The meal was finished. Ron looked at his son and at Liam "Thank you so much for dinner. It was excellent."
He paused looking again at both his son and his partner. He smiled. "Liam I was warned that you would be difficult to bring around. I didn't react to some of the things that you said about pot roasts and trips to Paris and the wine because I know that you were correct. You have every right to want nothing to do with me. I can't imagine how you managed to do what you both have done, with no help from me. I am ashamed at my actions when I found that my son was gay. Yet, you have taken me in to your home and have been decent with me today. I think that I should go to my hotel and register. If you want to show me around Buffalo, I would really like to see your office, Thomas and your practice, Liam. You must be very proud of what you have both accomplished. If you don't want to see me again, please give me a call tomorrow morning and I'll catch a flight out late tomorrow afternoon or evening."
Looks passed between Thomas and Liam. They had discussed this at some point and Lucas had obviously done some magic on Liam. Thomas looked at his father. "Ron, we would like to show you around. We had thought of going to a club for dinner and some dancing with Robert and Lucas tomorrow night. We would like you to join us."
"Thomas, Liam, I can't tell you what that would mean for me. I don't deserve it but it would mean a lot to me." Everyone noticed that there were tears in Ron's eyes and he turned to steady himself. "Thank you for accepting me in your home tonight. It is more than I could have hoped for."
"How about we pick you up at 10 tomorrow. Buffalo is an interesting city and we would like to show you some of it."
Ron shook hands as he left with many `thank yous' to the guys and to Thomas and especially Liam. When he was gone, Thomas looked at his partner. "Liam, you were surprising, amazing. Thank you. I am so confused about this. I should hate him but somehow he has gone out of his way to try and make peace for himself and perhaps for me as well."
"You can thank Lucas for some of that. I probably would have been rude. Lucas convinced me to look at the situation from several angles, his reaching out and your feelings which were obviously mixed." He smiled, "Sorry, I couldn't help myself a couple of times."
Thomas laughing, "You did get a few digs in but they were subtle but correct and Ron was able to over look them. Come here." He gave him a hug and a kiss.
Lucas looked at the two. "I think that it is time for us to leave you alone to discuss this by yourselves. Liam, we too would like to see your practice. Perhaps we could have lunch at the bistro we went to last time and then dinner at the club with Ron. You choose what you want to show him, perhaps Niagara Falls from the US side. We would certainly be up for that but your choice." He paused, thinking. "Oh, are there any outlet stores in Buffalo or close by?"
"You could try the Walden Galleria or the Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls, New York. I have heard that there is an outlet mall in Niagara on the Lake, Ontario but I have never been there. In fact, we have never crossed the border."
Robert, "Quick question. Are you planning on coming up to the chalet for July 1st?"
"We forgot to mention it. Yes, we have rearranged our schedules and we'll arrive on June 30th and leave mid to later in the day on July 2nd. We can't manage much more than that. Luckily, July 2nd is a Saturday. And July 4th is a holiday for us. Could you make it down for our celebration, July 4th?"
Robert continued. "We'll have to look at our schedules and get back to you on that. We are really looking forward to having you at the chalet. I think that you will enjoy it. It is going to be a mixed group. Some of our best friends are hetero married couples but you will enjoy them. Thomas, I know that you will enjoy meeting my parents and Lucas' parents. Dad and Carl Stephenson are both CPAs. Michael Burtchell often makes it up with his partner Stephen Bourgeois and David who works at The Accountants and Mark, his partner. You could do a lot of shop talk with that group. Sorry Liam, no dentists or doctors in the family."
"That's OK. I want to learn to water ski. I can swim but I have never been in a boat. There is downhill skiing up in Flagstaff, Arizona but I could never afford to go there and learn. It is a long drive up from Tucson, almost four hours. Then there are the expenses of renting ski equipment and lift passes, just out of my reach. So I want to spend time in the water, eat and enjoy the company. We are really looking forward to it."
The guys went to their room. Lucas received a very physical thank you for what he did for Ron and for Liam and Thomas. They fell asleep with Robert's arms around his very satisfied husband and lover.
The next morning, Robert and Lucas came in to the kitchen as Thomas and Liam were having a discussion as to what to do with Ron that day. They stopped and looked at the guys. "Do you want a big breakfast?"
"Cereal or toast will do with coffee of course. Perhaps a small piece of cheese if you have any."
"Coming up." As Thomas went to get the cereal, he looked at the guys. "Do you really want to visit our offices."
Robert spoke up. "Yes, I gather that Liam's is pretty high tech. We have seen your office but we would like to see how you have organized it. I am thinking of renting a larger office space in the next weeks and I would like to see what you have done. We would love to go back to some of the other sites of Niagara Falls, USA. I think that Ron would be just as impressed as we were. It would be something that he has never seen before. We could do the offices this morning, have lunch and then go to the Falls if you want. Maybe you could ask him what he would like to do or see. We'll do the outlet stores on our way home on Sunday."
Ron was at the entrance to the hotel when the guys pulled up. Thomas suggested that they go inside and decide what to do that morning. "I would really like to see your offices and then someone mentioned Niagara Falls. I would really like to see it. Could we see your offices this morning and then go to the Falls this afternoon? I would like you to choose a place for lunch and I would like to take you all out for lunch."
"Ron, you don't have to do that."
"I don't have to but I really want to do it. OK?"
Ron was impressed with Thomas offices and so was Robert. However, it was Liam's practice that really attracted the attention of everyone.
Ron was impressed. "Liam, this is so much better than my dentist's office. You must have spent a fortune on the latest equipment."
"Well, I decided that I was the only gay dentist in town and that my clientele from the gay community would be able to afford the best. It turned out to be a wise choice. I now have a large number of gay and straight patients. We both made the decision when we moved here to pay off our office purchases and our student debts as quickly as possible. We lived a fairly frugal life style for the first couple of years. For the first three years here, I opened the practice for dental emergencies on Saturdays. I could charge emergency, after hour rates. My partner acted as my secretary that day. I put every cent onto my loan. I paid it off in three years as did Thomas. I can now just add new state of the art equipment as it comes on the market."
Thomas looked with pride at his partner. "He has a great reputation in the city. He makes certain that he attends conferences and keeps up with the latest technological advances. He has had to turn new patients away as he doesn't want to have to make appointments difficult to get or too long to wait for. He keeps three to five every Friday afternoon for emergency appointments."
It was Liam's turn to look a this partner. "Thomas also has a very good reputation in the city. Again, he has a mixture of gay and straight clients. His business really took off after about two years. He too keeps up to date on the latest trends in Accounting."
Liam looked at them. "OK, enough of this, I think that it is time for lunch." He turned to Robert and Lucas. "We would like to try another very good bistro. It is as good as the one we went to on your last visit."
Lucas, "The last one was excellent. I really liked the sausages."
Liam, "They have the same ones at this place that we are going to. Wonder if Marcus will be there? You have no idea the questions and comments we had after your first visit. We didn't give any details. You are our mystery friends; the Canadians is what you are called."
Sure enough Marcus was there. He couldn't help himself. "Ah, your Canadian guests are back. Now you have another unknown person with you. You know that talk will just grow."
"Marcus, this is Ron Corbett, a relative from Tucson who is visiting. He met the Canadians at a conference in Toronto about a month ago. They formed a strong connection." He shook his head at the look on Marcus' face. "Marcus, not that kind of connection. You have such a dirty mind."
Thomas smiled. "I know you love it. Have a great brunch."
Liam, "Oh god, this will be the talk of the town tonight, all next week especially at the club. It will be fun."
Ron enjoyed Niagara Falls as much as the guys had on their last visit. Then they drove around Buffalo looking at some of residential areas and some of the shops and museums. As they said, that would be OK for another time. Ron looked quite hopeful when he heard those words but made no comments
They dropped him off at his hotel and went back for a rest and something to drink. As Lucas was to say later, "Some rest." It was quite active and very intense.
They went to the same club as last time. Marcus was there at a large table. Liam noticed that Marcus looked at them and then made a comment to the table. Most of the table looked at their group as the were taken to their table. Liam chuckled. "Ron, your visit along with Lucas and Robert's is going to get a lot of attention. Marcus loves to stir the pot and speculate."
Ron commented that the food was very good as they all finished their main course. Thomas and Robert had noticed that Ron had said something to the waiter. The music started. The two couples looked at each other. It was Liam who looked at Robert and Lucas. "So are you going to put on another show tonight?"
Robert laughed. "You'll just have to wait and see. Depends on the music and our mood." He looked a Lucas and then he looked back and the guys and laughed. "Yes, I think that my guy might just be in the mood. Time will tell. We have to give Marcus something to talk about."
It was obvious that neither couple was going to change what they usually did because Ron was there. The music started and the couples looked at each other, stood up and went to the dance floor. It was a fast set and they each showed their style. They rejoined Ron after that set. He was smiling. "You guys looked great out there. You told me that it was mixed crowd. It is great to see that no one cares who dances with whom. They had just finished their drinks when a slow piece started. The guys excused themselves again. Robert and Lucas melded into each other. They had taken dancing lessons and they both had a good sense of rhythm. They danced the entire set close together enjoying the feeling of being so close. The set ended. Lucas looked at Robert and gave him a quick kiss.
Liam and Thomas went to talk to some people that they knew. When Robert and Lucas sat at their table, Ron looked at the two of them. "I am so glad that I came to the conference in Toronto. You have changed my understanding of commitment and love. I am really hoping that Thomas and Liam realize how much my attitudes have changed and can forgive me for what I did to them."
Lucas looked at Ron. "Ron, we have been impressed with how you have handled this. You have not once tried to justify what you did. You have admitted the pain and hardship that you caused them several times. I think that even Liam has softened his feelings."
"By the way, I spoke to the waiter. I am paying for tonight. I hope that will not cause a problem."
"Tell them that you wanted to spend the evening with them and you would really like to do this for them. I think that they will appreciate it. Thank you from us."
"Do you think that it is too early to talk about a visit to Arizona?"
"I'm not sure. Robbie what do you think?"
Robert thought for a moment. "Maybe you could phrase it as a winter break late this year or next January. It would have to be early because tax season will be on Lucas as you know. I know that The Accountants start being very busy in February and on. They may have friends or contacts down there who they would like to see."
"Would you like to come down with them? You seem to have really hit it off. It is obvious that they are looking forward to your family's chalet for July 1st."
Lucas looked at Robert. "Oh boy, Arizona weather in January. Who could say no to that!"
"It can be cool but not your cold. I think that you would enjoy Tucson. The Sonoran Desert Museum is one of the best in the country. You could spend days walking around it; it is essentially an outdoor museum. I have bought a smaller home north of Tucson. It is in a forest of Saguaro Cactus. I have never grown tired of it. I would so much like Thomas and Liam to look at it as their second home but I won't push. I know that their lives are up here. I am so impressed with what they have done. I would just like to be part of their life."
At that moment, Thomas and Liam arrived back at the table. "As usual, you two have caused a lot of speculation. Some of the guys would like to meet you. We have some friends who are hockey players and would really like to talk to you. Maybe after the next set?"
Robert. "That would be fun. Sure."
The next set was a mixture of slow and fast. It was during one of the fast ones that Lucas turned Robert around and pulled him close. It was exciting and erotic at the same time. When the fast one ended and slow one started, Robert turned around, looked at his guy with a lovely look, pulled him close and kissed him. The slow dance was even more sensuous. At the end of the set, Lucas looked at Robert. "That was an amazing set. I thought that we might set the place on fire. Hot, hot. He pulled him close and they embraced each other.
Thomas took them over to a table of their friends. Liam stayed with Ron. The guys had a great time talking about their hockey team at University. The men were impressed with their exploits there and fascinated in what they were doing now both with hockey and their jobs. A couple of times, Robert had looked over to see Liam, Thomas and Ron in deep discussion. It appeared to be tense but in a good way. The music started and the guys shook hands and went over to join Thomas and Liam.
"Guys, we have had an interesting offer for us and you. Ron would like us to come down for a break from winter in Buffalo and Ontario in January. We want to spend Christmas here with Liam's family and Ron is coming up for Christmas. Would you join us in January?"
"How could we turn down an offer like that? You can show us around your favourite areas and take us to some of the local tourist sites. We'll have to arrange some dates. We could fly down on Friday and come home on the Sunday of the next week. It would give us a lot of time. Ron was telling us about his new home. It sounds really interesting. We'll rent a car for the time so that we can do things apart."
They decided to have a couple more dances and then leave. They arrived back home and decided to have a quick nightcap and go to bed. Robert looked at Lucas as they undressed. "Life really can be exciting and just by chance, we happened to pick Ron's firm to try the software for the month and look what has happened. We have really clicked with Thomas and Liam and have helped them to connect with Ron. A trip to Arizona will be amazing. It will be great to read up on it and plan some of things that we want to do there. I remember how much fun it was for your first trip to Paris." He stopped and looked at Lucas as he had taken off his shirt and his pants. "You have the most amazing body. I think that I just want to lose myself in it. The dancing really turned me on."
"Doesn't take much!"
"Speak for yourself. I felt something hard touch me in that last set and most of the others as well. Come here." Robert kissed him tenderly. He hoped that Thomas and Liam were doing the same thing.
Lucas could smell the sausages and bacon as he awakened slowly feeling the arms around him. It had been another wonderful night of closeness. He deliberately moved so that Robert would wake up. Lucas could hear the breathing change and feel the body begin to awaken. Robert's eyes opened and he turned his head for a kiss. Robert smiled softly at Lucas. "That was another night to remember from start to finish and the finish was mind blowing."
Everyone was in a good mood at breakfast. Both Robert and Lucas noticed the little touches and looks between the hosts. Robert told himself that he had been right. Thomas and Liam had had the same night they had had. Ron had told them that he would have breakfast at the hotel and walk around the area. The agreed on pickup at 11. His flight was leaving at 5.
It turned out to be a beautiful day and they just drove around to the sites of Buffalo. They had lunch at a small Mexican restaurant where they were known. The guys were surprised at how well both Thomas and Liam could speak Spanish. It was obviously appreciated by the waiter and the owner. Robert and Lucas were introduced and they apologized that they didn't speak Spanish, just English and French. One of the waiters heard that and started to speak very fast, good French to them. Both guys replied in good Canadian French. The guys had not been speaking French to each other except with the owner of the wine store so it was Liam who was impressed with their fluency. As Lucas said, they had France, Spain and Central and South America covered between them, except for Brazil.
They went back to the house after a long lunch. Ron came with them. The guys packed and the decision was made that they would go to the outlet stores by themselves and then cross the border at the appropriate time.
They were just about to say goodbye when Robert remembered something that he wanted to say. "This will be your first time in Canada. Just a reminder, Canada is metric. All our cars have speedometers that are metric. When you cross the border, the signs will change. Think of 100 km/h as 60 m/hr which is the speed limit on expressways like your Interstates. It is usually 80 on two lane highways. Cities are 40 or 50 km/h. Think of distance as time. If a city is 200 km away that is about 2 hours if you are driving at 100 km/h. Weather reports will only be in Celsius. So get some charts and brush up on the conversion of metric to imperial."
"You might want to use your credit cards instead of cash. Some stores will accept American money but you might not get a good exchange rate. Our parking meters take credit cards or loonies, a one dollar coin and toonies, a two dollar coin and quarters. There are no one dollar or two dollar bills any more and no pennies. If you pay cash, the price is rounded up or down; 11 and 12 cents are rounded down to 10 cents and 13 and 14 cents are rounded up to 15 cents. Perhaps go to your bank and get $20 or $30 Canadian cash."
It was Liam looking skeptical. "You are not having us on, are you?"
"No, just a bit of difference between our countries. You'll get use to it. We are hoping for temperatures from 26 to 30 Celsius for the days you are there. You can look that up. Oh by the way, the Malenfant family are French speaking to each other and to us but they will use English to their guests. It will flow easily. Most of our friends who are coming are English speakers who can manage some French. Prediction is that you are going to really enjoy it."
They turned to Ron and gave him a hug. Ron gave yet again his thanks for what they had done. He was looking forward to seeing them in Tucson. There were huge Marchese hugs between all the guys.
Robert looked at them. "It was another great weekend. Now it is back to the grind. We'll see you on June 30th. I'll send some maps and directions to the chalet with our telephone number there. Really looking forward to seeing you."
More hugs and the guys pulled away with waves from the Buffalo gang. The guys had fun at the outlet stores and made it to the border for their forty-eight hours crossing with no problems.
They talked on the way home about what they had to do in the next week at work and getting ready for the July holiday weekend. They hit their offices running on Monday morning.
Robert and Mark arrived at the same time, early as usual. "Boss, hope that you had a good weekend. We didn't leave the office until 2 in the afternoon. It really was a great idea; we all enjoyed just talking and having fun. Thanks for the afternoon off. Much appreciated."
"We had a great weekend." He explained to Mark why they had gone and how it had worked out. "Now, we have to get going on getting this outfit up and running. Would you let Phoebe know that I want to see her as soon as possible. I am going to ask her to replace our web site and I have a list and ideas of what I want. I do want her to make it come alive. Then I want to get working on updating the English and French versions of Forensic+ and ForensicPlus. It is going to be a busy week. By the way, Lucas and I are going to the Chalet on the evening of July 29. July 1st is on the weekend so June 30 will be holiday for the staff. Do you think that the staff might like to come up to the Chalet for a weekend in July? You would probably have to sleep in tents for Saturday night. We have swimming to the raft, a big power boat for water skiing or boarding. We have canoes or kayaks for anyone who wants that. Can have a fire down by the lake that evening. It can be quite romantic."
"Boss, I am certain that Phoebe and I would love to come and the others can decide for themselves. I love the idea of a fire down by the lake. You're right; it can be very romantic."
"Talk to the staff and see if you can find a date. It is quite a ways off so that should make it a bit easier."
Phoebe was very pleased to be asked redo the web site. She said that she would excited to do it. As he and his Dad had done, he had given her a list of ideas and items that he wanted. After Lucas had given them some ideas for enhancements to Forensic+, Robert, Mark and Edward had worked hard on the program. Helene had worked just as hard that week and she had already made in roads in the coding and French words in the ForensicPlus.+
The next week went just as well. Robert could see that his business plan was beginning to take shape. He was very pleasantly surprised and excited by the first screens of their new web site. They had said quick good byes to the staff at closing on June 29th and wished everyone a great Canada Day. Soon the guys were on the road to the chalet, happy and exuberant about what had happened over the last month.
They arrived just as the sun had started to sink towards the horizon. They knew that family and close friends were coming up the next day. They had the place all to themselves. They had bought some Thai food and after emptying the SUV, they put it in the microwave and sat on the front porch relaxing and eating as the sun set. It was another magnificent sunset.
They sat closely together and Robert suddenly realized that there was leg rubbing his leg. He knew what that meant and he decided to ignore it but then deal with it in his own way. He stood up and stretched and gathered up the dishes. When he came back to the porch, Lucas was standing with his hands on a crossbar looking through the screen at the colours of the clouds and the reflections in the water.
Lucas sighed as he heard Robert come back to the porch. "What a beautiful sight! I never cease to be enthralled by it."
Lucas couldn't see the smile on Robert's face as Robert scanned the lovely body in front of him highlighted by an artist's palette of colours in the sky and water. As he put his arms around his guy, "I see something that enthralls me almost as much as the sky and water." One hand went down the front of Lucas' body and the other went down his back to his butt.
Lucas turned his head. "This is where we made that big decision last August. It too was a beautiful evening. Lover, make love to me slowly as we watch this beautiful sight slowly change."
Many minutes later. Robert felt his lover start to breath harder and suddenly his body stiffened and Robert could feel his very hard cock massaged by Lucas' orgasm. Several hard thrust was all it took for Robert's body to stiffen and thrust into his guy and hold. As his release started, he reached up and turned Lucas' head and he kissed him passionately. "That decision last August was best decision that we ever made (as a reminder, the decision was to get married)."

If you liked this story, you might want to read the others that I have published on Nifty. In particular, my first story, Unexpected Change which has had the most positive comments and one of my other favourites, What a Difference a Year Makes. I have recently reread Introspection and it is worth a read. Michael Burtchell's story is in Discoveries; its ending is a little weak but getting there is fun.
