Uncle Rick's Rhyolite Ranch

Chapter 3

The sun's rays warmed Jason's body as he lie on the soft sand of the beach that surrounded the pool of clear water. A splash of the water caught his attention. He turned over on his side to where the splash came from. There he saw Daniel treading water and playfully smiling at Jason. He slowly swam to the bank and walked out of the pool towards Jason.

"How was the water?"

"Refreshing. May I join you in the sun?

Jason smiled. "Of course. There is plenty of room for two of us."

Daniel walked over and lowered himself to the sand next to Jason, putting his arm affectionately around him, embracing him and nuzzling his nose into the back of Jason's neck. Jason closed his eyes and moaned as he caressed Daniel's arm. Jason felt Daniel's warm breath against his skin and slowly opened his eyes. He suddenly realized he wasn't on the sand next to the pool of water. He was in his bed at the ranch house and Daniel was really holding him. It wasn't a dream. Jason slowly turned facing Daniel. In Daniel's arms he felt as if he was being held and caressed by an angel. Daniel slowly opened his eyes and smiled, gently caressing Jason.

"Thank you for rescuing me from my terrifying dream."

"You're welcome. Did you sleep better after?"

"Mmhmm, it was the most peaceful and deepest sleep I've had in months. Thank you."

"Daniel, Jason, time to wake up. Uncle Rick says you have 45 minutes to shower and eat breakfast. He says wheels up at 7-o'clock."

Daniel sighed and shouted. "Thanks, Cody. We're getting up."

The boys grinned and got out of bed, completed their morning rituals and made it out to the kitchen where breakfast was waiting for them.

Cody rushed to finish his eggs and bacon. He fidgeted while waiting for Jason and Daniel. Cody wanted to be a pilot when he grew up so flying in Uncle Rick's plane excited him more than anything. Today was no exception. He woke an hour before, excited to begin his day and he could hardly wait to be in the air.

As they ate the last bites Uncle Rick showed up with his keys in hand. "Ready, guys?"

Cody shot up out of his seat excitedly and bolted for the door.

Jason chuckled at Cody's enthusiasm. "I was just as excited to go up in an airplane when I was his age."

Daniel nodded in agreement. "Me too. I was going to ask my parents for flying lessons but then, well, I never got the chance."

Within a short time Uncle Rick pulled his truck up to the ramp where the plane was parked and everyone hopped out. Jason and Daniel helped Uncle Rick pull the chocks away and disconnect the tie down cables as Cody read out the preflight checklists to Uncle Rick, who checked everything on the lists. Once the checklists were complete Cody and Jason climbed in the back seat and Uncle Rick sat in the left seat while Daniel sat in the right seat.

Uncle Rick turned around in his seat. "Cody, are you and Jason buckled in properly? I need to know you're doing your job back there."

Cody checked his seatbelt that was already fastened, then reached over and pulled Jason's to be sure it was tight.

"Rear seatbelts tight and secure, Uncle Rick. We're not going to fall out today."

Uncle Rick instructed the boys on the importance of a sterile cockpit. "You boys can ask any questions and talk all you want but on take offs and landings I need you to be completely silent. I'll be really busy then flying the plane, talking to air traffic controllers and looking out for other aircraft. Also if I raise my hand that means be quiet right away, understand?"

The boys all acknowledged. Soon after the pre-take off checklist Uncle Rick announced their intentions on the Unicom frequency for the area and they pulled out onto the runway. Uncle Rick set the gyrocompass, did one last check and slowly gave it full throttle. Cody glanced at Jason and could tell he was nervous about flying in a small airplane. He reached over and squeezed Jason's hand and held it. When they reached 60 knots Uncle Rick pulled back on the yoke and the plane smoothly rose off the runway. At 500 feet above the ground Uncle Rick banked the plane to the southwest and climbed to a higher cruising altitude. Cody, Jason and Daniel asked Uncle Rick questions about flying, flying lessons, and airplanes. Uncle Rick answered their questions and told them about his experiences when he took flying lessons.

Almost an hour later Uncle Rick announced it was time for a sterile cockpit. The boys stopped talking and paid attention to Uncle Rick's flying. Uncle Rick radioed the air traffic control at the Kingston City Airport.

"Kingston approach, Cessna November 734 Tango Charlie"

"Cessna November 734 Tango Charlie, Kingston approach."

Kingston approach, we're a Cessna 182 Skylane five nautical miles east of the field at 7,100 feet, inbound for a full stop."

"November 734 Tango Charlie, Kingston approach. Descend to 6,600. Cross midfield for a right downwind on a 1-mile base. Wind is 190 @ 3 knots, altimeter 30.09. Clear to land runway two-zero."

" Descend to 6,600, cross midfield for a right downwind on a 1-mile base, clear to land runway two-zero, 734 Tango Charlie."

Uncle Rick flew as directed smoothly landed the plane at the Kingston airport and taxied to the terminal where he shut the plane down. They all went into the terminal where Uncle Rick walked over to the flight service center and made a phone call to the farm machinery company to let them know he was at the airport. He had arranged for them to deliver the harrow bed part to the airport once he landed. The service manager told him the part would be delivered to him at the airport within 30 minutes. Uncle Rick thanked him and ended the call.

"Well, boys, we have a bit of time. What do you think, should we get a snack at the coffee shop before we head back? The boys all nodded in approval and they made their way to the coffee shop where they ordered sandwiches. Because it was early there were only two other customers in the coffee shop. The tall blond waitress took their order and the sandwiches were brought to the table within a few minutes. Everyone devoured the snacks quickly.

Cody was the first to finish his sandwich. "I guess flying makes you really hungry, doesn't it?"

Jason agreed. "Sure does. I could almost eat another sandwich. I better just wait for lunch though."

Just then a handsome young man with short blond hair and deep blue eyes, dressed in blue mechanics overalls came into the terminal, looked into coffee shop and spotted Uncle Rick and the boys. He walked over to the table.

"Rick Hansen?"

"Yes, that's me"

The delivery boy handed a box to Uncle Rick. "Here are the parts you ordered. I just need your signature, please.

Daniel and Jason watched the young man as Rick signed the invoice and was given a copy. "Thanks for bringing it out here to the airport. It saved us having to rent a car."

The young man gave a big smile. "You're welcome, it was no trouble at all. You guys have a good flight back."

After they finished up their snack, Uncle Rick grabbed the package and handed it to Cody.

"May I get you to look after this valuable package and put it in the baggage compartment behind the rear seat once we get to the plane?"

Cody took the package and smiled. "Sure, Uncle Rick. I'll look after it."

Uncle Rick paid the bill and left a generous tip for the waitress. Before leaving he and the boys returned to flight services to check the weather conditions.

"Okay boys, it looks like we may have a few bumps on the way to Belmont but we'll be okay. The later we wait, the rougher it will get so we better go now. Better go to the restroom one more time before we take off and lets get going. "

Once more they boarded the Cessna after Cody opened the side baggage compartment door, placed the package behind the rear seat and locked the door. Within a few minutes they were in the air and on the way to Belmont.

As Uncle Rick predicted, there were a few minor turbulences on their way up to cruising altitude. Uncle Rick explained that is why he liked to be in the air as early as possible to avoid the updrafts from the heating air on the ground. Once again Cody reached over and held Jason's hand in case he became nervous. Jason smiled and squeezed Cody's hand thankfully.

Daniel thought about what they would do once they got to Belmont. "Uncle Rick, is Wes' sister going to meet us at the airport?"

"Yes, Vera is expecting us. We'll fly over her house and let her know we're there before we land. She'll know to come on out and meet us."

As they flew over Belmont Uncle Rick spotted Vera's house below. He flew lower over her house to announce their arrival. Uncle Rick then flew towards the airstrip and once again smoothly landed. He taxied off the runway to the parking area where they shut down the plane and exited the plane. In just a few minutes a small pickup truck drove up. A thin middle-aged lady with short gray hair got out and walked up to the plane where she said hello to the flyers and handed Uncle Rick the package and an envelope with Wes' name written on the front. Uncle Rick handed the package to Cody, who put it inside the plane with the package they picked up in Kingston. Vera and Uncle Rick talked for a few minutes and said their good-byes. The four boarded the plane and took off for home.

Once up to cruising altitude Uncle Rick asked Daniel if he would like to fly the plane. Daniel jumped at the chance. Uncle Rick explained the controls and instruments to Daniel. He told him what course and altitude to fly. Daniel took the yoke and peddles and flew the plane as though he had been flying for years. Cody grew excited for Daniel and looked forward to the day he'd be sitting in the front seat flying the plane.

Cody asked Uncle Rick if on the way home they could fly over Becker's Canyon. In a few minutes they flew over the colorful cliffs. Daniel circled the plane so they could get a good view below. A herd of mountain goats traversed the sharp slopes leading to the floor of the gorge. The view of the waterfall, pool, and canyon walls from the air was spectacular. Jason regretted not bringing his camera.

The rest of the flight home was quick and smooth. When they got close to Chaparral Daniel turned the controls over to Uncle Rick who had radioed their intentions at the Chaparral airstrip. Once they landed, taxied off the runway, and parked the plane they all jumped out and secured the plane properly. They climbed into the truck and Uncle rick drove everyone back to the ranch in time for a late lunch. Cody, Daniel and Jason thanked Uncle rick for taking them up in his plane. Uncle Rick thanked them for coming along and helping.

For lunch Uncle Rick, Cody, Daniel and Jason made "Bobby" sandwiches made from turkey, dressing, cranberry sauce and mayonnaise on a French roll.

That evening after dinner Daniel and Jason secured the stables and went for a walk to their spot under the elm tree to watch another sunset. Once again they sat next to each other, legs touching. Off in the distance to the south a rumbling thunderstorm rolled across the valley, giving them a brilliant display of lightening below clouds that reflected the sun's orange hue.

The boys sat in silence for a few minutes watching the spectacular show before their eyes.

Finally Daniel Spoke. "This has been a great day, hasn't it?"

"It's been an amazing day. I've enjoyed every bit of it."

"Thank you for sharing your bed last night. I'm sorry I woke you with my nightmare."

Jason turned to face Daniel. "Daniel, you have no reason to apologize. After what you went through with your father, anyone would have nightmares.

"Thanks. I hope that's the last of them for a while."

"You seemed to have slept better after you joined me in my bed."

"I felt safe and protected there with you."

Jason looked down and grew quiet.

"Did I say something wrong, Jason?"

Jason shook his head. "No, it's just that, well no one has ever said anything like that to me before. If you want, you can sleep in my bed again tonight."

"I'd like that a lot. Thank you."

Jason leaned against Daniel and Daniel put his head on Jason's shoulder. Jason smiled as his heart beat faster. They watched as the thunderstorm rumbled across the valley and the orange clouds turned a dark gray as the sun behind them disappeared over the horizon.

When it was bed time Jason and Daniel slid under the sheets together. They gazed into each other's eyes contently. Daniel said goodnight, turned over, taking Jason's arm and wrapping it over his side, and held it against his chest. Jason smiled and nuzzled into Daniel's neck. They quickly drifted to sleep, exhausted from the long day. Both slept soundly all night.

Jason gently woke out of a deep sleep to the morning light. He opened his eyes to find his arm around Daniel. He smiled and gently caressed Daniels arm. For the first time in his life he felt secure and loved, in a place where he belonged. Could it be that Daniel had similar feelings about him? A week ago he couldn't imagine holding another guy, let alone one of the most handsome guys he'd ever seen.

Daniel slowly opened his eyes to Jason's loving caresses. He smiled, turned, and gazed into Jason's eyes. As he did, the aroma of cooking bacon made it's way from the kitchen into their room.

"Something smells delicious out there."

"It sure does and it's making me hungry. How did you sleep?"

"I've never slept as soundly as last night. I could get spoiled doing this."

"Maybe we should plan on sleeping together while you're here."

"Really?"

"Mmhmm, if you would like that."

Jason gazed into Daniels deep brown eyes and leaned in slowly to kiss his lips. He was interrupted by a knock at the door.

"Daniel, Jason, breakfast is ready. Better get up and get it before it's gone. "

Daniel looked into Jason's eyes and sighed. "Thanks, Brandon, we're getting up now." He shrugged his shoulders and they both climbed out of bed.

After completing their morning rituals they made their way into the kitchen, gathered their breakfast and sat down for their first meal of the day.

After breakfast Jason and Daniel met the others in the family room.

Uncle Rick smiled as they walked into the room. "How's everything going, boys?

"Great, Uncle Rick. We're looking forward to a full day."

"Well, it looks like a good one just for that. Jason, how are you getting along? Are you enjoying your stay so far?"

"I'm having a great time. Thank you so much for having me. I'm looking forward to helping out more."

"Well, today you can do just that. Daniel and you make a good team. I'm going to have you boys ride up to the upper alfalfa field and move irrigation pipes.

"Oh cool, I did that for a couple of years on a farm."

"Well then it sounds like I picked the right men for the job."

Daniel and Jason smiled at each other knowing it was going to be a good day.

"Can I go move pipe with them, Uncle Rick?"

"May I, Cody. I need you to help Henry move the horses to the back corrals this morning. After that you can ride up with lunches for the three of you to eat up there. How would that be?

"Okay, Uncle Rick."

"Thank you, Cody."

Uncle Rick gave the others their work assignments and they all headed off to work.

Daniel and Jason filled their water bottles and headed to the stables to saddle up their horses. They then mounted the horses and headed out to the alfalfa field. They rode out of the stable taking a trail that led up to the fields. They soon arrived at the alfalfa field and dismounted near a generator and pump.

Daniel and Jason put their gloves on to move the pipe. "How far do we need to move the rows of pipes, Daniel?"

"About five rows should do it. It's a 10-acre field. There are a lot of 20-foot long pipes so it should take us most of the day to move these rows.

Daniel took one end of the pipes while Jason took the other. The two boys talked as they worked. After an hour of hard work they stopped for a water break. Daniel stripped off his shirt and drank some water. Jason smiled, admiring Daniel's nearly perfect body. As he took a drink out of his water bottle he thought about waking up in Daniel's arms that morning. No wonder he was falling for Daniel. When he returned to the city he would have to remember to thank Travis for suggesting he come to the ranch.

"Jason, I can tell you've done this before. You make this easy."

Jason smiled. "It's easy working with you too, and fun."

Daniel smiled as he looked into Jason's eyes. "Ready to start on the next row?"

"Let's do it."

Jason and Daniel went to work each grabbing an end of 20-foot sections of pipe and walking them over several rows, then pushing them together. They worked hard for the next few hours and didn't notice it was noon until Cody rode into the field with their lunches.

"Hi guys, it's lunch time."

Daniel waved. "Hi Cody! Thanks for bringing those up. We'll be right there.

They laid the last section of pipe in a row and walked over to the edge of the field where Cody laid out a blanket and set out sandwiches, chips, and water bottles for the three of them.

Jason sat next to Cody. "Thanks, you're going to have lunch with us?"

Cody smiled and nodded. "If that's ok with you guys."

"Sure it is. We like it when you're around."

Cody beamed as he bit into his sandwich. "I like being around you guys too."

The three ate their lunches and talked how moving pipe wasn't as bad as it looked. They agreed they accomplished what would normally take a full day.

When they finished eating Daniel grinned at Cody. "You know why we liked to have you around, Cody? We like you around to have someone for tickle attacks."

Cody's eyes grew big and he giggled. "Noooo, I'm too small for that."

"I think your just right. What do you think, Jason?"

"I think he looks perfect for a tickle attack. I'll hold his feet. You go in for the tickle."

Cody squirmed as Jason grabbed his feet. He couldn't stop laughing as Daniel went in for the attack. As much as he resisted he loved the attention he was getting from the older boys. They made him feel important and a part of them.

"What do you think, Jason, has he had enough?"

Cody shouted "Yes I have, please!"

Hmm, I don't know, Daniel. He looks like he wants more tickles."

Cody pleaded. "No please that's enough. Don't forget I brought you lunch."

"He does have a point, Daniel. He was nice enough to do that."

"That's true. Maybe we should go easy on him this time." Cody, it's going to cost you to stop though.

"I have to pay you money to not tickle me?"

"Nah, Jason and I only charge hugs to stop."

Cody giggled. "Oh no, not hugs!"

With evil grins, Daniel and Jason moved closer, wiggling their fingers

"Alright, fine. I'll pay up."

After they released him Cody reached over and gave both of them big hugs and they hugged him back. "Thank you for going easy on me and for letting me hang around you guys."

Daniel ruffled Cody's hair. You're welcome. Thank you for bringing our lunches, Cody. That was really nice of you.

"You're welcome. Can I help you guys?"

As Daniel and Jason set pipes in their new location Cody gave a shove and pushed them together. Together the three of them moved all of the remaining pipes within an hour. Once they finished they rode their horses back to the stables.

That evening after dinner Jason and Daniel walked out back to check on the animals. They made sure they were all in there safely locked up in their barns, stables, and coups. Jason checked to be sure all the stable shutters were secure while Daniel checked the doors and gates. After ensuring the animals were as safe as they could be they headed to the ranch house.

Daniel glanced at Jason. "Want to sit by the fire tonight?"

"Yeah, it's kind of cold tonight. That would be great. I think I'm going to need a shower before that though."

"That sounds like a good idea." They went to the bedroom and shed their clothes.

"Why don't you go first, Daniel?"

Daniel turned on the water and came out taking Jason's hand. "Come on, there is room enough for both of us."

They stepped into the steamy shower together. Daniel adjusted the temperature and pulled Jason under the rain head with him. Inches apart they gazed into each other's eyes. Jason took the bar of soap from the shelf and lathered Daniel's shoulders and arms. Daniel closed his eyes, relishing the sensuous feelings emitting from Jason's hands. With both hands Jason lathered Daniel's torso. Breathing heavily, Daniel leaned forward and put his forehead against Jason's. Jason pulled Daniel to him so their chests touched. Daniel reached around Jason embracing him. He shivered, realizing this was the first time he ever felt like this about anyone in his life. Closing their eyes, they held each other intimately under the warm cascade of the shower. They raised their heads, opened their eyes at the same time and smiled while gently caressing each other. Slowly they leaned into one another, touching their lips in a tender, lingering kiss followed by a long tender embrace. Silently Daniel and Jason expressed their feelings for one another through their delicate loving touches, kisses, and embraces as the liquid warmth of the shower enveloped them. Daniel gently took the soap from Jason and softly washed him. When both of them were clean they rinsed. Daniel turned off the water, opened the shower door and removed two towels off the rack. He handed one to Jason and began to dry him off with the one in his hands. Jason then took his turn drying Daniel. In appreciation Daniel leaned in and tenderly kissed Jason once more. They draped robes around each other and made their way to the family room where they made a fire in the great round fireplace.

Jason turned off all of the lights, leaving only the flames of the fire to illuminate the room and joined Daniel on the couch. Daniel put his arm around Jason, pulling him close. Jason nuzzled into Daniel's neck and snuggled close to him, holding his hand, caressing his fingers with his.

They hadn't spoken a word since they stepped into the shower. There was no need. Their tender touches and kisses said all that needed to be said. They brought their lips together once more for a long passionate kiss. It was that moment when they both realized they had fallen deeply for each other.

A bedroom door opened, spilling light into the hallway. A sleepy Cody padded into the family room where he noticed Daniel and Jason sitting on the couch. He walked over to sit with them. He crawled up on the couch between them. Daniel noticed Cody was crying and put his arm around him.

"What's the matter, buddy?"

"I had a bad dream and it scared me."

Jason put his arm around Cody as well. "Can you tell us about the dream?"

Cody nodded. "A U.F.O. landed in back of the house and some creatures climbed out. They came in the house and captured Jason and took him with them." He looked at Daniel. "You wanted to fight them cause you didn't want Jason to leave but they controlled his mind and they took him anyway and you cried. That's when I woke up crying."

Jason smiled. "Come here, Cody."

Cody leaned over and held Jason tight.

"Cody, I'm okay. It was just a nightmare. Those creatures really didn't come get me."

"I don't ever want you to go, Jason. You and Daniel are like big brothers to me."

"Cody, you're like a little brother to me. I promise I'll do everything I can to not let creatures take me away. I want to stay with you and Daniel too."

Daniel held on to Cody and Jason. " I promise I'll fight those creatures the best I can, Cody. I don't want Jason to leave either, okay?"

Cody nodded and looked up at Daniel and Jason. "You don't want Jason to leave either?"

"That's right."

After wiping his eyes Cody, pausing for a moment, looked at Daniel and then at Jason. "Do you guys love each other?"

Jason and Daniel paused and looked at each other. "Yes, Cody, we do."

Cody smiled. "I knew you guys would."

Jason smiled at Cody. "How did you know we would love each other?"

He shrugged. "I just knew it is all."

"Daniel gave a confused look at Cody. "When did you first know that?"

"The night Jason came to stay with us."

Jason looked at Cody with surprise. "But how did you know we would fall in love each other Cody?"

"Cause you're suppose to. That's all I know."

Daniel smiled at Jason. "Is that okay, that we love each other, Cody?"

Cody hugged Jason and Daniel together and beamed with happiness. "Of course it is. Now I have two big brothers who love each other and me."

Daniel lovingly looked at his new little brother. "Yes you do but it's about time for you to head back to bed, isn't it?"

Cody held Daniel and Jason tighter and shook his head. "I don't want to go back to bed and see those creatures again. Don't make me. Can I please sleep with you guys?"

Jason smiled. "Cody, Daniel and I are sleeping together in the same bed tonight."

"I promise I won't take up too much room. I'm just a little guy."

Daniel and Jason laughed, stood, and Jason picked Cody up, carrying him to their bedroom.

Daniel pulled off the sheets and Jason set Cody down in the middle of the bed. Jason and Daniel climbed in on each side.

Jason snickered.

Daniel looked at Jason. "What's so funny?"

Jason smiled. "Cody really does know all."

The three boys laughed, as they put their arms around each other and quickly drifted off to sleep.

Cody, Jason, and Daniel's adventure together continues with more chapters to come.
