TYLER AND RYAN CHAPTER ONE
"THIS IS INCREDIBLE!! Kingston High has come from being 2-0 down, looking totally out of the game and Tyler Greene has dragged them right back in!! What a game! The opposition looks face smashed! Now...can they win?? Just pass the ball to Tyler Greene!"
"Man, I can't believe Kingston is back in this. Fuck sake. I'm gonna lose the bet now," sixteen year old Ryan moaned to his best friends Juan and Kirsty in the Mexican restaurant that they were watching the local provincial soccer tournament on TV. He was depending on that money and for a good while it
looked like Kingston High was going to take the win. What with being 2-0 up until the fucking 82nd minute. That was until that idiot wanker Tyler Greene decided to make his rich ass even more well known with two goals within minutes. Juan and Kirsty didn't understand. No one did. He really needed that money. That was all he had for the groceries this week. Money that he had to earn the hard way working at MacDonalds (In South Africa legal age for earning minimum wage is sixteen) for the past few months. He wasn't rich like them. And make no mistake, he'd rather be with Juan and Kirsty than any other people to hang with, but his financial situation has become a real problem. Even though they would never say it, but always when they made plans to chill somewhere, it always had to be some place that Ryan could afford to go. He didn't wanna hear or accept them paying for him. That simply wasn't an option. He's name was
Ryan, not Charity.
"OHH!! CROSSBAR!" Juan shouted as Ryan snapped back to the here and now. He saw the replay. The midfielder of Lassiter's had created a simply magnificent pass over to Tyler Greene and the teenage striker had missed a total sitter, knocking the ball against the wooden bars around the goalposts. It so very nearly was 2-3 and his immediate life would be in total financial ruin. Well...not by much, but still. Ryan himself, was a fanatical soccer player. He was good. He knew that he was their school's star player, just like
Tyler Greene was to Lassiter's. Only difference was that Tyler had been snapped up by the Premier League. He played weekly for Lassiter City and they sat in sixth place thanks to the aging defenders of the league simply not knowing how to deal with Greene's devastating pace and natural ability to score goals. He already had clogged up 13 goals for Lassiter, but at only sixteen years himself, Tyler still had school in front of him. He never let down his team at highschool level, even though he was a Premier League star player. That was one of the things that Ryan secretly admired about Tyler but he would never say it. Tyler was a spoilt rich kid with too much damn money to splash around every day of his fucking life. He, Ryan, had to do seven hours shifts serving burgers and fries to hungry customers. Yeah...life sucked. Especially if you were poor.
"All over buddy, you owe me," he heard Juan say next to him.
"What? No way dude, the match ended 2-2, didn't it?"
Juan looked at Kirsty and Ryan immediately saw the look the two gave each other. Kirsty quickly grabbed the remote and turned off the TV.
"Yeah...yeah it did. Let's just leave the bet, shall we? Since its my turn, I'll just go pay for the Taco's and then we can leave..."
"Juan, what was the score?"
Juan looked a little constipated at the question.
"I told you, it ended in a draw, so we both lose, you owe me nothing."
Ryan stood up and grabbed the remote.
"Ry, please don't do that.. " Kirsty tried and failed to stop him. Ryan switched on the TV and saw the final moments of the match and interviews with the players. Tyler Greene had won and SCORED a last minute penalty to win the game for Lassiter's by 3 goals to 2.
"Mate..."
Ryan reached into his trousers and pulled out a twenty. He gently placed it in front of Juan and quietly left the restaurant. He heard both Juan and Kirsty call after him but he pretended not to hear them. Afterall, in a few hours, he had another shift in McDonalds to prepare for whilst hi two best friends would probably go to a movie or snuggle with each other at Kirsty's house. He hated feeling like this, it wasn't their fault his life sucked balls. He couldn't help how he felt. They were his two best friends in the whole world...and at that moment he had nothing to say to them.
Tyler Greene was alone in the locker room after the match when he saw it. A piece of paper stuck to the inside of the locker he had used that afternoon. Probably another love letter from a so-called hot girl. Fuck that. But hey...what the girls didn't know couldn't hurt them, right? How were they supposed to know that instead of fantasizing about the likes of Megan Fox and Selena Gomez, he dreamed about Chris Hemsworth...Lionel Messi...Shaun Mendes...Tyler shook his head and shoved the letter into his jacket pocket. He didn't have time to grow a boner inside the locker room of all places. Anyone could walk in here and see him. The last thing he and his growing reputation could afford right now was that it became public knowledge that Tyler Greene was gay. He was making it big in the Premier League for fuck sake. He
had the respect of the same men he grew up watching play and win trophies. He was the youngest player in the Premier League and he had already scored thirteen goals, making him the current third highest goal scorer. He had to suppress his feelings. He couldn't allow it to get out that he was a queer. He didn't wanna be. Damn...how much did he wanna be straight and screw girls every night...but the moment he thought about a pussy and sticking his tongue or dick anywhere near inside there, any desire he might have had just vanished like opposition defenders when he took to the field. He wanted a guy. He wanted a man's arms around him. In the sport that he
was into, that just simply was never gonna happen.
Tyler ran his fingers through his short, black hair whilst experiencing just a little twinge of pain inside his chest. Never...never was a long time. Awfully long to a sixteen year old. He just had to act straight, find a girl, any girl, and be what he HAD to be. What was there left to do? He couldn't give all of this up?!? He saw his dad waiting for him outside. Damn. He had to make time to go for his learner's license. The press would be all over him if they knew his dad still had to pick him up after matches.
"Hey mate! Well done on that hattrick! Even though you totally dived to win that penalty," his dad said with a little laughter in his voice.
"Oi, I did not dive at all! The guy tripped me inside the box, that was totes fair and square, Dad. Sorry if you're a loser because you went to Kingston as a kid," he yelled jokingly back at his dad. The two of them had a wonderful father/son relationship. Something that most definitely would be lost for ever if his father ever found out he liked other boys and preferred the touch of another dude to that of a girl.
"Yeah whatever. There was a small package for you in the post today. It looked important. I put it on your desk, yeah? What do you want for dinner? Mom said it
was okay to get take out tonight."
"She totes owns your ass, Dad."
That remark got Tyler a slap to the back of his head.
"You choose, striker boy. KFC or MacDonald's?
"We had KFC last week, remember? And it gives me heartburn."
"Micky D's it is then."
"Order number 765! Order number 765! Oh, here it is. You want serviettes with that? Cool. Thanks. Next!"
"Yeah, I'd like to order four cheeseburgers and Coke's please."
"Sure, sir. You want fries with that?"
It was a little busier than usual. Perhaps because it was a Saturday night after all. People were too lazy and had too much money. They'd rather waste it on takeout than use said money to cook their families a decent healthy meal. Ryan might have worked in MacDonald's but he never ate their meals himself. He was in top form for his school's soccer team and
maybe, just maybe, someday, there would be a talent scout at one of his matches and if he managed to impress them, he couldn't be addicted to grease and fatty cheesefries. He quickly casted hisneyes over the bunch of teen boys in the back. They were munching on their Big Mac's and wolfing down their drinks all while talking about Man United's win over Man City so damn loud that it could be heard in front at the service counter. How badly did he wanna join them and discuss his favourite sport. Alas. He had to work. He got the large order for cheeseburgers out as quickly as he could and accepted the tip he was given graciously. A few more minutes flew by before there was a small commotion outside of the restaurant.
"What's going on?" Lisa, his co-worker asked as she stood on her toes trying to see whatt was happening.
"Probably another fight between drunks like the other night. Not our problem. We have people to serve."
Like running outside to see what the noise was all about was gonna help him pay his rent due at the end of next week. Lisa did this job because her rich daddy decided that his little girl needed some cash of her own as she was bleeding him dry. It made him so mad thinking she was taking away this job from someone who could really use the money. But he knew that saying something and voicing his feelings wasn't gonna help anyone. Let alone himself. He had to get
his head down and do his job and then finally go home to get enough sleep for school. If he stopped being a sporting asset for his school, it was goodbye scholarship and that wasn't a fucking option.
"Three Big Mac Meals, please. Can you make it an Energade for mine instead of a soft drink?"
"Sure, sir. I'll just type that in..."
Fuck.
No.
Couldn't be.
Nah...
Okay, it was.
That must have been what the noise was all about.
Tyler Greene was standing before him, looking like a normal teenage boy who wanted a triple order of Big Mac's. Ryan's finger froze on its way to the computer to type in Tyler's order. The other boy rolled his eyes and leaned onto the counter, looking Ryan straight in his eyes.
"Dude...snap out of it. I'm Tyler Greene, yes. I'm also hungry. Can you get my food, please?"
His fingers melted from the frost they were covered in and were replaced by a sheer touch of anger and
irritation. Who the hell did this fucker think he was? Without lookin at Tyler he punched in the order, took the money off of the teenager and gave him his change, as well as his order slip.
"Next!"
But there was no customers to serve. Like bees flocking to their queen, almost every single person had latched onto Tyler, asking him questions, taking selfies with him, girls going crazy over the boy.
"If he was three years older I'd also be all over him. Yuo gotta admit, Tyler Greene has the looks of a model," Lisa said and patted Ryan on his shoulder.
"Just because I happen to be gay, doesn't mean I cream my pants over every guy I see," he said through shattered gums. This was nuts! He was beyond pissed! All those people hanging onto Tyler Greene's every word was gonna leave with him. They have already forgotten that they were in MacDonald's for another reason than to ogle some Premier League soccer stud. All the tips he could have gotten for all those would be customers...just gone. Just like that. Because of ONE person.
Somewhere in between those thoughts he shuddered when he realised he thought of Tyler as a soccer stud. Sigh. He was gay. Part of being gay was to find other
guys attractive. And yes, Tyler was insanely hot but it didn't matter either way because it would literally be a cold day in hell before something would EVER happen between them. The ridiculousness of it all made him smile. Tyler Greene gay?? What were the fucking chances?
Later that night Tyler noticed the package that his dad had told him about. He switched off his DVD player and walked over to his desk. It was a small package, neatly wrapped in brown paper. He tore off the paper and stared at its contents in sheer confusion. A mobile phone? It was an average prized device but for the life of him Tyler couldn't figure out what it was for. The phone was switched off, and he turned it on. He saw the screensaver...and nearly dropped the phone.
WHAT THE FUCK...
It was a picture of him kissing another bloke. Oh my god...where was that even taken?? Worst part was the picture wasn't photo shopped. It was very, very real. Apart from the normal apps that came with a standard WIFI enabled smartphone, there was only one other app on the desktop. WhatsApp. He immediately opened the app. No messages. No contacts. At once, he heard the phone make a noice. Somebody must have noticed this phone was online on WhatsApp and had sent a message. Was...was someone watching
him? His blood ran cold as he read the words sent by a number he didn't recognise.
"If you don't want this photo and more leaked to the press, meet me in MacDonalds tomorrow. Bring a R1000 with you."
Well there you go. Some bastard was blackmailing him! Question was...who was it? And WHERE the hell was that photo taken??"
"Your lover boy is back. Maybe he wants your number."
"Fuck off, Lisa."
As Ryan entered the main play area he indeed saw
Tyler Greene, back again. Lisa was full of crap. The guy was obviously waiting for his latest girlfriend. He didn't have a drink or food with him. Maybe he should go over and find out if he wanted anything. It was his job after all. Why he was nervous, fuck knew. Tyler was just another customer he was forced to serve.
"Hey...can I get you anything?"
Tyler looked up. His eyes were bloodshot, as if he clearly didn't get enough sleep the previous evening. He clutched his phone so tight, it seemed as if
someone would steal it at any minute. Luckily it was a late Sunday afternoon and MacDonalds was not busy at all. The look Tyler gave him made his skin stand on end.
"Who are you?"
Was there some sort of accusation in that question?
"I work here. Can I get you..."
"It's you. You. You sent me the message! It's you who wants to ruin my fucking life!" Tyler hissed out of the corner of his mouth. Now Ryan really didn't know what the fuck was going on, but whatever it was, it just got really weird.
"I'll just leave you alone..."
"No, you don't! You wanna ruin me? Come on! BRING IT ON!"
The handful of people that were inside the restaurant and had recognized Tyler was starting to stare at them. A few whipped out their phones and started recording the incident, some started taking pictures.
"Dude, lower your voice, people are looking..."
"To hell with them! You wanna blackmail me? You can get lost! I worked too hard to watch you destroy EVERYTHING!"
Tyler grabbed Ryan and shoved him against the wall of the building as hard as he could. It was as if something in Ryan's brain just snapped. A rich boy like Tyler Greene, simply did not mess with a street smart former homeless boy like Ryan Adams.
Ryan charged towards Tyler and shoved him back. The latter boy fell down and glided a few meters on his back, thanks to the sheer force of the push. Within seconds Ryan was on top of him, and NOT in a sexual way. He totally lost control.
"You fucking rich boys think you can mess with me? Not gonna happen. I'm no one's punching bag!" Ryan screamed before making his fingers into a fist, preparing to totes smash this little celeb wannabe's
face in. Security suddenly burst into the restaurant and ripped Ryan off Tyler before anything could happen. Tyler pushed himself away from Ryan as fast as he could, and ran out of the restaurant. He knew he had created a total scene but he was so sure the MacDonalds boy was the guy who wanted to blackmail him. People hurried outside and kept on taking photo's on him. He turned around and sped away, knowing he had probably just done his career major damage.
"Are you sure, buddy? No charges against that boy who nearly beat you up?"
"No dad. The guy works at MacDonalds. I can't sue him. He has no money. And it was me who made a mistake. I shoved him first. Its in ALL the papers and on every social media app. I hate to think what Lassiter's is gonna say. I really thought he was the guy who..."
Tyler's father saw a shadow creeping over his child's face.
"Guy who...?"
"Its nothing, Dad. No charges, no nothing. Just let the dude be. I have bigger things to worry about."
"What?! They can't do that!"
"Well they just did, Tyler. Lassiter's High suspended you. For good. Your name has been dragged through the mud as a violent thug who beats up innocent people and the school wants NOTHING to do with you!"
"But Dad, what about the team? The Premier League?"
Tyler was close to crying as his father sat down next to him. He placed his arm around his son, feeling the stress and different emotions going through the boy.
"This is where things are looking a little better. They have also suspended you..."
"The fuck?? You said it was good news!"
"...can you allow me to finish? It's Premier League rules, they have to make an example of you. What you did was wrong. However, they are willing to let you rejoin Lassiter's City in nine months time, on the condition, that you finish your school year and get the highest marks possible. Rebuild your good name and all that."
"Dad..how am I supposed to do that when I've been suspended from school?"
"There are plently of other good schools, Tyler. Lassiter's wants a complete update of everything so they can report back to the media that you are sorry and getting back on track. Once you're back in a school setup, things will look better. You're a role model for loads of kids out there, and you just nearly beat up someone. You have to make sure to send out the message that you were wrong, but you're doing everything to make it better."
"I guess. I just wanna play footy, Dad."
"You will. Now, let's find a school that's willing to take you."
"I'm sorry about the other day. When I lied that Lassiter's drew the game, so you didn't have to pay me. I didn't use the money. You can have it back. I want you to."
"Juan...dude! Can you let it go? Seriously?"
Every time someone comes up to speak with him he was afraid someone had figured out he was the person with whom Tyler Greene was fighting with. His
identity had been kept out of the papers...but at a price. He had to leave his job at MacDonalds. Management didn't want the fame or the attention that the story bought and had to let him go. He had been searching for another job without success. Not many people wanted to employ a sixteen year old these days. He saw Kirsty running towards them at lightening speed and was glad Juan had something other to occupy himself than feeling sorry for his best friend.
"Guess what? You're not gonna shut up!"
"Did I leave the condom for your mom to see?"
"OH MY GOD.. REALLY?" Ryan felt he threw up inside his own mouth, just a little.
"Sorry mate, anyway what's going on?"
Kristy shot a dirty look towards her boyfriend before looking over her shoulder.
"You guys remember Tyler Greene?"
"I vaguely remember the piece of shit," Ryan said as he crunched into his apple.
"He just enrolled here. He's gonna be in school with us! A real fucking celeb like him!"
A half eaten apple fell silently onto the grass as Kirsty finished her sentence.
