Twist and Turns Chapter 18

"Mr. Richardson?" asked a deep accented male voice. Kevin looked up from his cold cup of coffee and saw a Doctor standing at the doorway of the waiting room. Kevin stood up and grabbed his cane and hobbled over to him.

"Yes Doctor, how is he?" he asked.

"I must prepare you, it's doesn't look good. We really don't expect him to live through the night. There was just too much blood loss and damage. We have him on complete life support right now," the Doctor said sadly. Kevin felt weak in the knees and sat back down tears coming to his eyes unshed.

"Can I see him?" he asked.

"Yes you may see him. We ask you to be quiet and calm. We don't want to agitate him in any way," the Doctor requested. The two men walk down the hallway to intensive care and into my room. Kevin walked in and gasped. I was hooked to complete life support. A machine was breathing and beating my heart for me. He walked over to me and sat down and picked up my hand.

"He is so pale and cold," he sobbed. He reached up and brushed a stray hand from my forehead. The Doctor left the room. Kevin reached into his pocket and pulled out my new rosary and placed in my hand. He pulled out his cell phone and Dialed Brian's Number. After three rings a sleepy voice picked up.

"Brian it's me Kevin," he sobbed into the phone.

"Kevin what's wrong?" asked Brian.

"It's Jason he's been shot. They don't expect him to live through the night. Please hurry," Kevin sobbed into the phone.

"Oh my God, Were on our way we will be there as soon as possible," assured Brian. The phone went dead. Kevin walked back to my bed and knelt beside and folded his hands in prayer and looked to heaven.

"Lord please take care of him. I need him so much. His child needs him so much. Please don't take him away from us. I love him so much," He prayed. He bowed his head until it rested in my hand. He thought back on the day we met when we collided in the airport.

(Flash Back in Kevin's mind.)

'God I hate airports,' I grumbled to myself as I grabbed my carry on luggage. I reached into my jacket and pulled out my shades and pulled down a baseball cap. I heard the flight number called and I hurried on my way. When BAM some jackass walked right into me. We collided hard. The jerk I collided with fail to the ground. I lifted up my sunglasses to see who it was. My heart stood still. He was gorgeous. His sandy blonde hair was cut close military style and he was clean- and dressed very nicely. He had child like face and tight body. We made eye contact.

"I'm sorry, I wasn't watching where I was going," he mumbled. God that voice. It was the voice of angles. He caught a good look at me and stared. 'Oh shit, he recognizes me.

"I guess I should apologies too because I wasn't watching where I was going either," I admitted extending my hand. He took it and stood up.

"Guess I should introduce myself to you, I'm Jason Gibson," he smiled. 'God what a smile.' I thought as my heart beat loudly in my chest.

(Back to present)

Kevin looked up at me and fresh wave of grief washed over him. "Come on Jason you have to live. Don't you dare walk into my life and get me to fall in love with you and than leave!" he swore. He grabbed my hand and held it like a lifeline. He finally fell asleep still holding my hand. Early that morning he felt a hand on his shoulder. He looked up and saw Brian. He stood up and pulled him into hug. No words were needed. They both knew what was happening.

"I brought Caroline and his mother Angela," he said stepping aside to let the two women into the room followed by the rest of the gang. Angela walked up to Kevin and stopped and stared. She looked concerned when she saw the cuts and bruises on his face and arms. She looked down at the bandaged right ankle. Tears came to her eyes as she pulled him into hug. She held him for a few moments letting him cry on her shoulder. Finally she gently pushed him away and took his head in her hands and looked into his eyes.

"So this is the young man that has stolen my son's heart?" she asked.

"Yes Mrs. Gibson," he answered.

"Thank you for loving him in this most desperate hour. He really needs all of our support," she stated as she walked up to the bed. She wiped a tear away and took my hand in hers. "Now you listen here young man. This is your mother speaking. You have a full life ahead of you. You have son that you haven't even met yet. You have a wonderful man in your life who risked his life to save yours. And you have your sister and mother. Please hold on and fight. You can do it," she commanded. She looked down at my other hand and fingered the Rosary. "This is one I haven't seen yet," she commented.

"It was a gift I bought for him yesterday. He lost his other one in the fire," Kevin explained.

She turned and walked to him and took his hand in hers. "I don't pretend to understand this relationship you have with my son. But I can tell that you love very much. So I am going to tell you like it is. You need to rest. My son needs you strong and healthy. He wouldn't want you getting sick on him. Now go and rest," she urged. Kevin at once got that stubborn look on his face. And shook his head no.

"I'm not leaving his side. He needs me," he retorted. 'Oh oh he was going up against a stubborn woman. She just stared at him and nodded slowly.

"I guess you're right. I wouldn't let anyone pull me from my husband either. Very well you win. But I'm having another bed brought in. Will that make you rest?" she conceded. Kevin nodded. So the bed was brought in and Kevin lay down and was asleep in no time. Two hours later he was waken to the sound of a solid long beep. He sprung out of bed and to my side. The rest of the gang was there too. He walked up to my side and reached out and touched me. I was gone. He slowly collapsed to the floor. Brian knelt down beside him. AJ and Howie and Nick knelt down to forming a circle around my beloved Kevin and pulling eachother in a group hug drawing comfort from each other.

I felt no pain. I found myself floating up over the room. I called out to Kevin to let him know that I was all right. I was at peace. I tried to touch him but couldn't. The room filled with light and I smelled Honey Suckle behind me. I turned to see my wife. "Pam, what's happening to me?" I asked. "Am I dead, am I going with you?" I asked hopefully. I was at peace and happy and I didn't want that feeling to end. To my dismay she shook her head. "But why?" I demanded. "I don't want to go back."

"You have to Jason. It's not your time yet," she explained.

Chapter 19

"What do you mean it's not my time. I'm dead. See look at my body," I protested.

"Look at Kevin Jason, he needs you. Your whole family needs you. You have got to go back," she said.

I looked down at Kevin. He was sobbing uncontrollably and Brian and the rest of the guys were trying to comfort him. The Doctors and nurses had moved in and were trying to revive me. My heart went out to him. "What happens if I don't go back?" I asked not ready to give up this newfound freedom. Pam held out her hand and took mine.

"You will loose him forever," she stated.

"But someday he'll die too and than we can be together," I insisted. She shook her head sadly and the world changed around me. I saw scenes of the future. I saw my funeral and Kevin hopelessly clinging to my coffin. I saw them lower my body into the ground and Kevin kneeling at my graveside. I saw him turn to alcohol and drugs. I saw him push all of his friends and family away. I cried for I was loosing him and I saw no way to get him back. Finally the world changed around me one last time. I was suspended high above the ground looking down at the top of a hotel. I saw two figures standing on the rooftop. I soared down to get a closer look. I soon realized that it was Kevin and Brian.

"Kevin please step away from the ledge," urged Brian in tears. Kevin shook his head no.

"I can't stand being away from him anylonger," he yelled back.

"This isn't going to bring him back. You have friends and family that loves you. We can help you through this. Come on live!!" screamed Brian desperate.

"Don't you think I know this wont bring him back?" he yelled in anger. "I going to be with him, that is why I am doing this," he explained.

"Please don't," cried Brian taking a step closer to the edge. I felt a horrible feeling of dread approach me. I did not like the way this was headed. I looked at Pam and she pointed to the two cousins.

"You don't understand Brian I must do this," Kevin said taking a step off the side of the building. Brian yelled and jumped out and caught Kevin's hand as he went over the side.

"NOOOO!" I screamed as I watch two people I cared about most in this world fall to their deaths. Kevin hit the ground first. His body crushed and lifeless. I knelt beside him holding his head in my lap. Than I heard a horrible howling sound as the ground opened up and three demons came from the depths of hell and reached for Kevin. His soul separated from his body. He looked at me and reached for me to help him. The Demons screamed at him and wrapped their arms around him and pulled into the dark whole. He screamed at me to help him but I couldn't I hung my head and felt myself being carried away.

"Now do you understand why you must go back?" she asked. I nodded my head yes and found myself back in the hospital room and falling into my body. I was wrenched back to consciousness in a huge wave of pain. I opened my eyes and saw my mother's face over top of me smiling at me. I opened my mouth to talk but no sound came out.

"No son don't try to talk. You've had a very rough time of it. There is some one who wants very badly to talk to you," she said stepping aside and Kevin's face came into view. I tried to reach out and touch his face tears were streaming down my face. He reached down and wiped them away with his hands.

"Hi there sleepy head, it's about time you woke up," he tried to joke.

"I love you too," I tried to say but could only mumble. He smiled and kissed my forehead.

"Don't try and talk right now. You need rest," he said. I nodded and closed my eyes and fell asleep.

I awoke later the sun was shinning in the window but I didn't see the palm trees instead I saw a maple tree with only few leaves on it. I was confused. I tried to sit up but couldn't I was too weak. I turned my head to see who was in the room with me. I saw Kevin sitting in a chair reading a book. "Where am I?" I croaked out. He looked up and smiled at me. It was the most wonderful sight I had ever seen. He stood up and walked to the side of my bed and knelt down and picked up my hand and kissed it.

"Your back in Front Royal Babe. And it's about time you woke up. You've been in a coma for a week now." He said relieved.

"A Coma?" I asked squeezing his hand. My grip was so weak that he hardly even noticed it. He squeezed back.

"They had to induce it. Your heart was too weak to handle the stress. After they almost lost you and you regained consciousness that night we almost lost you again. So they induced a coma to help you heal," he explained.

"What happened to me?" I asked. I was still confused. He frowned at me concerned. "Please tell me what happened. I don't remember what happened." I pleaded.

He pulled up a chair and sat down. Taking my hand in his he took a deep breath. "You remember Sam escaping and burning down South Fork don't you?" he asked. I nodded my head yes. "Well we went to Bermuda and he followed us. He shot you in the chest. Than we fought and we fell off the cliff. He hit the rocks below and I somehow managed to save myself and climb back up. When the ambulance got there you were unconscious and barely alive." He said with tears in his eyes as he relived those moments.

I hurt me to see him like this. I tried to reach up to wipe his tears away but didn't have the strength. He wiped his tears off frustrated.

"Any way he is dead and we don't have to worry about Samuel Gibson anymore," he said with a smile. I nodded in relief. I found my eyelids getting heavy and I yawned. He laughed at me and I gave him a dirty look. "OK Ok I'll let you get back to sleep," he said bending down to kiss my forehead. I went to sleep happy. I awoke later to see a doctor hovering over me. He smiled down at me and turned and said to Kevin.

"Sleeping beauty is awake," he laughed. I glared at him but was to tired to retort. "Well Mr. Gibson, you have had a rough time of it. Are you ready for some answers he asked? I nodded my head yes and then my stomach made a growling noise. Kevin busted up laughing and the Doctor sighed. "OK OK let's get you some food first. Do you feel up to eating." I nodded yes. "You don't talk much do you?" he asked laughing.

"It hurts to talk right now," I croaked out. I was sounding better.

"Well now that you are awake you start pushing fluids and that should help. Now I am going to start you on a liquid diet and see how that goes," he said. "After you eat than we can talk some more on what happened to your heart and what we can expect in the future," he said getting up to leave. When he left I reached for the pitcher of water and picked it up and tried to pour some in a cup. It was heavy to heavy to even lift. I sobbed quietly. Kevin walked over to me and took it from me and poured it for me. I stubbornly picked up the cup and took a drink of the ice water. I swallowed and smiled in victory.

"Is there some tooth paste around here?" I asked. With some rummaging around in the bathroom Kevin came back with a tube of toothpaste and a toothbrush. I got busy and brushed my teeth and rinsed my mouth out. When I was done I looked at him and said, "there all better."

"I'll be the judge of that," he smirked leaning down and kissing me full on the lips. I moaned softly and opened my mouth to allow his tongue in. After about two minutes of kissing we came up for air. "Man I have been waiting to do that for over a week," he sighed with a smile from ear to ear. The door opened and the Nurse brought in a tray. I looked at the tray to decide what to eat first.

"Oh boy lime Jell-O strawberry Jell-O and chicken broth. Hmm what should I eat first," I joked. Kevin laughed at me as I made a big show getting ready to eat my first meal in over a week. It took over a half an hour to eat it, (or should I say drink it.) I hid the paper to resume my target practice against Kevin from the last stay at this hospital. He saw me hiding the paper and laughed. There was a knock at the door and the Doctor's head popped in. I motioned him in. He walked all the way in with a clipboard.

"Ok Jason, as you know you took a bullet in the chest area. It nicked an artery and we almost lost you. So we went in and surgically repaired the artery. While we were in we noticed that one of your arteries was blocked. So we cleaned it out. Killed two birds with one stone. But the real trouble came when we tried to remove the bullet. You see when it nicked the artery it lodged in the spinal column severely bruising you spinal chord. You may have noticed that you are having difficulty moving your arms and may be unusually weak. Well we can contribute that to the spinal chord injury. But don't worry it is only temporary. In about 6 months you will be back to normal," he said cheerfully.

"Six months?" I asked helplessly. "You mean I will be in this limited condition for six months?" I wasn't prepared to be a partial invalid for the next six months. I felt Kevin's arm surround my shoulders. I looked up at him and smiled half-heartedly.

"Well it's really up to you. How well you recover and how hard you push your recovery will depend on how long you will remain in this condition," the Doctor assured me. He left me there alone with Kevin. For the first time in a long time I took a hard look at Kevin. He was tired. There were dark circles under his eyes and he had lost wait. I shook my head at him and he looked at me with a question on his mind.

"What's wrong now?" he asked.

"When's the last time you had any sleep. You know eight hours of uninterrupted sleep in a real bed. And don't lie to me mister," I demanded.

"Alright point taken," conceded Kevin getting up and walking to the window.

"You have to promise me that you will get a good hot meal shower and a real bed to sleep in mister," I scolded. He glared at me for moment and than broke into a smile. He came over and sat down beside me and pulled me in a hug. His nose wrinkled.

"What don't I smell nice and pretty?" I teased. He shook his head no and got busy taking my shirt off being careful for the IV lines. I looked down at my chest arms and abs. "God I have lost weight," I complained. I must have looked ugly in his eyes. He must have read my mind because his hand on my chin brought my face up to his and he looked me in the eye and he said with conviction.

"You are still the most beautiful person in the world. And don't you forget it!" he softly scolded me. I nodded my head in agreement. We spent the next hour giving me a bath and changing my clothes and bed sheets. By the time we were done we were both worn out. I was soon asleep. Kevin stepped out of the room with a promise that he would return in the morning.
