Twist and Turns

By Francis O'Ratigan

"Flight 1022 leaving for San Francisco at Gate A24 in fifteen minutes,"

`Great another flight out to California.' Ever since I had sold my first screen play it had been like this. Flying here and flying there. Every other month I always had some where to go. By the way my name is Jason Gibson and I am a screenplay writer. I am 24 and married and Gay. Yea that's right I am married to a lovely woman and I am gay. I found out I was gay two years after we were married. She doesn't know I am gay it would break her heart. I have never been unfaithful to her and never will. It is possible to be gay and love a woman with all of your heart. Well back to the story. I pick up my carry on luggage and start walking towards the gate. Not really paying attention to where I was going I walk right into someone. We hit really hard and I fall to the ground.

"Sorry about that, I wasn't watching where I was going," I mumbled.

"Well I guess I should apologies to since I wasn't watching where I was going either," he said. I looked up to see who he was and my heart stopped. There standing before me in all of his glory was him. The God of Pop music. I just lay there staring at him. His dark hair and his goat tee and those eyes. They were so piercing and intense. I finally noticed that that he held his hand out. Blushing I reached up and grabbed his hand and got back to my feet.

"Thanks, by the way my name is Jason, Jason Gibson," I said looking straight into those eyes of his. I believe in looking people in the eye.

"You mean thee Jason Gibson?" he yells his eyes going large. "Oh my god I loved your last movie "The Medic" it was so intense."

"Yea that's me, so you liked the movie huh?" I responded blushing. I would never get used to this celebrity stuff. I really don't think I was cut out for it. We started walking towards the gate.

"Are you kidding? I love the way you concentrated on the enlisted members of the military. It brought the whole war into prospective for me. I made the rest of the guys watch it too. We must've seen it six times."

"The rest of the guys?" I asked acting confused. I had to go through the celebrity thing and wasn't going to let him get off the hook either.

"Oh, Man I am so sorry. I'm Kevin Richardson," he said with a smile.

"Thee Kevin Richardson, as in with the Backstreet boys?" I yelled.

"Yea Yea keep it down or we'll have a riot on our hands," he whispered loudly. We both laugh and walk onto the plane together. As luck would have it we had the seats next to each other. I choose the window. Flying always made me nervous. Ok I admit it, I hate flying. I have a sinus condition and takeoff and landings are extremely painful in my ears. I become really quiet anticipating a painful accent. Kevin notices this and gets concerned.

"You all right?" looking at me with concern in his eyes.

"Yea, I'm fine. I just don't like to fly," I mumble looking down.

"Come on your kidding right? I mean flying has got to be the safest way to travel," he says laughing.

"You're right. I have nothing to worry about," I said. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad. I reach into my pocket and retrieve a piece of gum. Sometimes it helps some times it doesn't. It was worth the try. I pop a piece into my mouth and offer a piece to Kevin. He declines. The engines rev up and the plane starts to taxi down the runway. Finally we are in the air. It didn't take long to figure out that it was going to be painful. After the first three minutes the pain was intense to the point that I couldn't hear anything. I looked out the window trying to avoid Kevin's stares. There was no way I was going to let my hero see me in pain. Tears were streaming down my face and the pain only got worse. Than it happened I felt a rupture feeling in first my right ear than my left ear. The pain lessened considerably. I knew that my eardrums had ruptured. I could barely hear Kevin's urgent calls. Finally he grabs me by the shoulder and turns me around to face him.

"Oh my God you have blood coming out of your Ears!" Turning frantically around he yells for a flight attendant. She comes running over.

"Oh God his ear drums have ruptured. Mr. Gibson did you take your antihistamine before you boarded!" She had to yell so I could hear her.

"Yes I took them but there not working," I wipe off my face. They find a doctor on board and he checks my ears out. And they decide that it is ok to continue the flight. I just to have take a ride in the ambulance once I get to my destination. They put cotton in my ears and give me some painkillers. They make me sleepy and I soon find myself sleeping.

I slept through the flight and Kevin shakes my shoulder to wake me just as the wheels touch down.

"Are we there yet?" I ask.

"Yea, we arrived just now. The Attendant asked me let you know that they are going to bring a stretcher on the plane," he said with that killer smile.

"I don't need a stretcher. I can walk just fine," I got up to prove it and promptly made an ass out of myself. A huge wave of dizziness washed over me and I plopped back down in my seat. Kevin looked down at me smiling and shaking his head.

"So now are you going to let us help you?" he said.

I shook my head yes in defeat. We sat there while the rest of the passengers left the plane. I was surprised that Kevin did not leave. When I asked he looked at me surprised.

"Why would I leave? You are my friend and my friend is in need. I don't know about you but I do not abandon my friends in time of need," he replied placing a hand on my shoulder. By this time the stretcher had gotten there and they helped me onto the stretcher and we were on our way. In a bout a half an hour we arrive to the emergency room. They get me settled in an exam room and a doctor comes in to talk to me. He walks in with a pissed off look on his face.

"Well Mr. Gibson you've managed to rupture both of your eardrums. Were going to keep you here for a couple of days for observation. If you will excuse me I have to find a room for you," says the Doctor as he gets up and leaves.

"I don't like his bedside manner,"says Kevin glaring at the door. He reminded me of child who wasn't getting his way.

Thirty minutes later we are settled in the room. I try to convince Kevin to go on to the Hotel to meet up with the rest of the guys. He flatly refuses. He instead opts to call Brian on his cell phone. He steps out side to do so. Dialing the phone number he waits to hear Brian's voice on the other end.

"Hey Brian, it's me Kevin. I'm at the hospital with a friend," he says wincing in anticipation of the response.

"What's wrong? Who is he? And what is going on?" shouts Brian.

"Whoa, whoa Brian, to many questions for this late at night. You remember me talking about Jason Gibson?" he asks.

"Yea, he's the screen play writer you like so much. Why?" asks Brian.

"Well I met him on the plane over here. He had a slight medical emergency and he ruptured his eardrums. So I am here with him now," replied Kevin.

"I hope you know what you are doing Kevin. Remember Ryan?" warned Brian.

"Jesus Christ, Brian he is married and has a kid for crying out loud. It's not like I'm going to jump his bones or anything. Get a grip!" Yells Kevin slamming the flap on the phone shut and jamming it back into his pocket. He walks back into the room. I pick up at once that something is wrong.

"Want to talk about it Kevin?" I ask.

"Damn Brian, every time I show some interest in a guy he thinks I'm going to turn into a sex crazed maniac or something," he replied not realizing he said that out loud.

"Huh, Kevin you want to tell me something?" I ask raising an eyebrow.

"Oh My God!" he yells plopping down in a chair putting his head in his hands. "I've ruined everything. The band, your friendship, God Brian is going to kill me when he finds out," he sobbed.

I get up and make my way over to him and kneel beside him and put my arm around his shoulder and pull him into a hug. "Kevin you didn't ruin anything. Your band is fine, I'm not going anywhere and if Brian wants to kill you he is going to have to get through me first. Although he might win you know with me being so dizzy and all," I laugh.

"You mean you don't hate me?" he sniffles. He looked so cute and vulnerable like that it took all of my will power not to kiss all of his fears away.

"No Kevin I don't hate you. If I did I would be the biggest liar out there. You see Kevin, I'm gay too," I confess. Kevin looks up at me in complete shock.

"But you're married and have a child. How can you be gay?" he asks shocked.

"Believe me Kevin it is possible. Don't get me wrong, I love my wife and son very much. And I am very loyal to them. I don't live a gay life style," I explain smiling.

We talk some more than we finally decide that it is time for me to get some sleep. As I am drifting off to sleep I could have sworn that I felt a mans lips kiss me ever so gently. `Oh my God! Is Kevin attracted to me?' was my last thought.

Chapter Two

The next morning comes rushing at me like a freight train. I open my eyes and for a moment I don't remember where I am. I see a strange man sitting in a chair. It all comes back to me. The plane ride from hell. Kevin Richardson and the Doctor with the lousy bedside manner. I hear someone knocking at the door. "Come on in, it's open," I yell. The door slams open and four guys come charging in. Kevin wakes up and stretches and yawn. Nick is leading the pack. AJ and Howie follow and Brian brings up the end. Brian catches my eye and he glares me down. A hand is shoved in my face. I look up to see AJ's smiling face.

"Hi I'm AJ," he says shaking my hand.

"Nice to meet you AJ, so you are the strange one," I laugh at his mock shocked look on his face.

Next Howie introduced himself and than Nick. All three of them were very nice. Brian just stood there glaring at me. I finally give up just roll my eyes.

"You already know who I am so no intro is needed," sneered Brian glaring at me.

"You know something Brian? You have got to be the biggest Jack ass live," I hurl at him. His eyes go wide not believing that I would say something like that. "Yea you heard me right. Mr. Holier than thou. The ball is in your court either try and beat the shit out of me or get over yourself." The rest of guys just stare at me like I sprouted a third head. I look at Kevin who has his mouth hanging open. "Better close that mouth Kevin a fly might fly right on in there."

Nick bust up laughing "I like this guy! Can we keep him?" he asks.

Brian has found a seat and plops down in it.

"Uh guys could you three step outside for a moment? Me and Brian and Jason are going to have a little talk." Requested Kevin. The three other guys walk out and leave us alone. Kevin immediately gets up and storms across the room to where Brian is sitting. He also gets up and meets Kevin half way. "What the Fuck is your problem Brian?" yells Kevin with his fists balled up.

"You're my problem Kevin. And why are you cow towing to this trash anyway?" asks Brian pointing at me. I realized at this point that I had better step in or there was going to be a fistfight in my hospital room.

"Both of you back to your corners now!" I yell. Both of them back down and retreat to their chairs. I look at Brian. "Now Brian, I'm only going to say this once so listen real close because you are only going to hear this once. I have no intention hurting Kevin in any way. He is my friend and friends don't do that. Secondly you don't have to worry about me trying to get in to his pants either. I am fiercely devoted to my wife and family. So get the fuck off of your high horse before I knock you off. And believe me I can do it if I choose." Turning to Kevin. "You shouldn't talk to your cousin like that. You are family." Kevin bows his head in shame and I look at Brian and he also has his head bowed but I can tell it's not shame it's anger. I decide to take a chance and get up out of bed and walk over to Brian. I kneel down and place my finger under his chin and force him to look me in the eye. He glares at me. I shake my head and softly say. "I know you are Christian Brian and you have a strong belief in your faith. So do I. I know and you know this is not how Christians behave. So let's try this again." Standing up I extend my hand and say, "Hi my name is Jason Gibson. It is nice to meet you."

Brian looks up and shakes his head and stands up and punches me right in the gut and than punches me in the eye. Before I could do any thing Brian storms out of the room. Kevin tries to follow him but Nick and AJ hold him back. Howie helps me up and back to my bed. After they get Kevin calmed down they go look for Brian. I sit in the hospital bed with an ice pack to my eye. Kevin just sits in his chair glaring at the floor.

"Penny for your thoughts?" I ask him.

He looks up at me and smiles. "What if I want to charge more?" he jokes.

"Sorry, that's the going rate for thoughts." I joke back. "Now come on spill it Kevin, what's bothering you?"

"I was just thinking about Brian. I mean I've never seen him act this way before accept one other time and that was when we were both going after the same guy. Oh my God, I just figured it out. He is jealous, and he likes you." He exclaims.

"Well he sure has a lousy way of showing it," I grumbled rubbing my sore eye. I look up when I hear the door open. In walks Brian he has a very subdued look on his face. Stops right at the door. I could see two pairs of hands push him in the rest of the way. Nick and AJ step in the rest of the way.

"Brian has something to say to you Jason," says Nick glaring at Brian. When Brian doesn't speak up right away AJ pokes him in the side.

"I'm sorry for being such an ass hole. I shouldn't have hit you like that. I don't know what came over me," he said looking down at the floor. I look at the other Guys and nod towards the door. They all take the hint and leave the room except for Kevin and Brian.

"I out to kick your ass for what you did to me." I said. Brian cringes at my words. They were harsh and angry and he knew it. "But I'm Christian and believe in practicing what I preach. Unlike you. Now why did you do that?" I demanded.

"Umm, can I talk to alone?" he asked. I looked at Kevin and he nodded and left the room. Brian came over and sat on the edge of the bed. "You know that Kevin is gay right?" I nodded. "But what you don't know is that I am also gay," he continued looking down at his feet.

"You have something else to say Brian?" I asked prodding him along.

"You're going to hate me if I tell you this. But I I'm attracted to you," he mumbled looking down at his feet again. I reached over and took by the chin and forced him to look up at me. I noticed that his eyes were full of tears.

"I can hear better when people talk to me not at their feet." I laugh. This gets Brian to smile it was nice he had a great smile.

"You know your smile is better than your frown you know?" I asked with a grin.

We both laugh a little about that. Than we get back to business. I look him in eye again and tell him what I told Kevin.

"I don't hate you Brian. How can I hate such a beautiful person? But I can't have a relationship with you." I explain.

Interrupting me, " I know because you love Kevin,"

"No, Brian not because I love Kevin but because I love my wife and son. I know it sounds crazy but I never realized I was Gay until two years after I married my wife. And by that time we already had a son. I wasn't going to abandon them like that. Besides it possible to be gay and love a woman you know." I explain to him. He looks up at me and smiles.

"I think that is wonderful Jason. I don't think that I could do that if I tried. I mean I always knew that I was gay but I could never stay married to a woman knowing I was gay. Does she know that you're gay?" asks Brian.

"No she doesn't know. I couldn't tell her that. It would break her heart. She would think that I was staying married out of pity or because of my career. She would never understand that I love her with all of my heart," I said. There is a knock at the door and Nick pokes his head in the doorway. I motion to him that it is OK for him to come in. Soon the entire troop is back in my room. My stomach lets out a growl and Nicks hears it and bust out laughing.

"Hey! Aren't they going to serve you anything to eat?" he asks. As if on cue the door opens and a nurse brings in a tray. She smiles at my guests and places the tray on the side table and pushes it in front of me. I lift the top off of the plate and peek under it. I roll my eyes and lay it back down and push it away. Kevin gets up and pushes the tray back in front of me. And looks at me like a father would a child.

"You need to eat," he admonishes me.

"It's cream chipped beef on toast. I can't stand that stuff," I complain. He just looks at me. So I pick up a banana and peel it begin to eat it. He looks satisfied and sits back down. The rest of the guys say they have to get back to the hotel and Kevin and I wait for the Doctor to make his rounds. At ten in the morning he comes in. He is wearing a smile and walks in.

"Good morning Mr. Gibson. Are you ready to go home today?" he asks with a smile.

"You bet I am," I smile back.

"Good after your audiogram this morning you can check out," he said and he turns around and leaves. I get up to get changed. I am still dizzy but that should wear off in a day or so. We rush to get the audiogram done and soon we are walking out of the Hospital. I find a limo waiting for us. I look at Kevin who just shrugs his shoulders. The Door opens and out steps Brian with a grin on his face.

"What, I am supposed to let you guys call a cab or what?" he laughs. We get into the limo and start driving away. It suddenly dawns on me that I haven't check in to a hotel yet.

"Uh guys I still have to check into a hotel." I say.

"We've already taken care of that. We booked a room for you where we are staying. Your things are there too," says Brian.

"Thank you very much Brian, I really appreciate that," I say. I looked over at Kevin who is smiling at Brian. It was good to see those two smiling and talking. They were cousins and shouldn't be fighting. I could remember the last time I spoke to my cousin it wasn't pretty. He had found out that I was marrying Pam and he never forgave me for that. A hand waved in front of me and I snapped back to reality. Kevin was looking at me concerned.

"Yo Jason, where were you? We were calling you for about a minute with no response." Asked Brian.

"Sorry about that guys. I was taking a short trip back trough time is all." I reply smiling.

The rest of the trip was carried out in silence. Kevin and Brian quietly talked about band business. I phoned my agent to let him know why I was late. My agent told me not to worry about it that he had already sealed the deal with agreed upon price. I was happy about that. I phoned my wife and didn't get an answer so I left a message.

Telling her that I was all right and that I was coming home the next morning. I also said hi to my son Timmy. I hang up and see Kevin and Brian looking at me with big grins on their faces. I am clueless.

"What? I can't call my family?" I ask bewildered. They just laugh. The Limo comes to a stop and the door opens and we climb out. We had to fight through the press and fans. The press wanted a statement as to why I was in the hospital and my connection with the Backstreet Boys. I had handled the press before when I ran for office in my local hometown. When I was done charming the press we headed up to our rooms. I noticed that Kevin and Brian was staring at me again.

"What?" I ask. Did I sprout a third head or something?"

"No, it's just that we are amazed as to how you handled the press and everything. You've done this before haven't you?" asked Kevin.

"Yea, I ran for office a year back. When you are Pro-life the press can be brutal on you. So I learned real fast how to handle the press." I informed them. They just shake their heads and laugh. The elevator stops and we step out. Brian hands me a set of keys and we walk to my room. Kevin decided to take a nap. So it was just Brian and I. We go into my room to get settled. Once inside the room I was amazed at the size of the room. There were actually three rooms to the suite. I ran around the room like a kid at Christmas. Brian is laughing his head off. Finally after calming down and we get my things settled go into the sitting room and sit on the couch. I can tell that Brian has something on his mind. So being a nosey guy I push.

"Alright Brian, what's bothering you?" I ask.

"You say that you're Pro-life. Does that mean you are against Abortion right?" he asks looking me in the eye.

"Being Pro-life means that I support life from the moment of conception to the moment of Natural death. So yes I am against Abortion."

"Well I can't agree with you on that. What about rape and incest and teen age mothers?" he asked.

"When should the child have to pay for the crime of its Father?" I asked back.

Brian gets real quiet and thought about that for awhile and than he looks up and says, "Well what about the unwed mothers out there in the world. Should they have to be burdened with a child at such an early age?"

"Brian let me tell you story and you finish it for me. There was young teenage girl who discovered she was pregnant and although she was engaged she knew that her intended was not the father. She had no skills any education of any sort except how to be a good housewife. Her mother had taught her that. In her society it was wrong for her to be pregnant outside of marriage. Ok Brian here is where you get to finish the story. What does she do?"

After thinking about it for awhile he replies, "Well I don't think it is fair for the child to be brought into the world under those circumstances. So she should have an abortion."

"Congradulations Brian you have just convinced Mary the Mother of God to Abort our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ," I replied.

Brian gets this shocked look on his face and thinks about what I said. I let him think about it before I push him any further. After about five minutes of intense thought he looks up at me and says, "You are right. Those were the circumstances that our Lord was brought into this world."

"And they say the Bible wasn't written for our times!" I gloated. We talk and watch T.V. for the rest of the after noon. The rest of the guys catch up with us that evening and we meet at the reasturaunt of the Hotel.

"So Jason, what is your wife and kid like?" asks Nick.

"Well they are pretty much normal people. My son is three going on four. He loves Nintendo and Sony play station. I think he could beat you if he tried hard enough. God knows he beats me all the time." I reply.

"Cool, I'd like to meet him sometime," says Nick.

"Well maybe sometime you guys could drop by my house sometime when you have a break," I sudgested. A ringing of my cell phone interupted our dinner. "Excuse me a moment guys. Just let me get this and I'll be back in a moment," I get up and step off to the side and answer my cell phone. "Hello this is Jason."

"Mr. Gibson, uh this Trooper Smith with Va State Police. I'm afraid I have some bad news. Your wife and son have been involved in car accident," said Trooper Smith.

"How is my wife and son?" I ask with tears forming. I was shaking uncontrolably now and I was feeling faint. I made my way back to my seat. There was a silence on the other end. "My wife and son, are they all right?" I ask again raising my voice. They guys stop eating and stare at me.

"I'm sorry Mr. Gibson, they didn't make it. We need you to come home and identify the Bodies," reported Trooper Smith.

By now I am in shock I drop phone and just stare off into space and mumble "My wife, my son, my wife , my son. Gone. I'm all alone." Kevin gets up and walks over to me and picks up the phone. He finishes the conversation with the state trooper. He than calls the airport and lines up a flight to leave that night. The rest of the guys finish their meals in silence and I just sit and stare at my plate. In ten seconds my whole life changed. Ten seconds ago I had a wife and son. A family. Now I was alone. I feel a hand on my shoulder I look up and see Kevin's concerned face looking down at me.

"Come on Jason, let's go back to the room and get you packed. Brian and I are going with you," he said. I started to argue and he put his hand over my mouth to shut me up. "Please don't fight me on this Jason. You're hurting and need us and our support. Please let us do this for you?" I nod my head yes and I get up and walk towards the elevator. With the help of Kevin and Brian we get my things and their things together and we walk out into the hallway I was surprised to see the rest of the gang their. I say see you later to all of the guys I come to Nick last. His eyes are filled with tears. I pull him into a hug.

"Don't worry Nick it will be alright. Thanks for caring," I consoled him. He looks at me shakes his head in wonderment.

"I should be consoling you not the other way around. I can't imagine what is going through your mind right now. But know that you will be in my heart and prayers," he said with a smile. We head out of the Hotel again we are faced with the press. Thankfully Kevin handles it this time. We finally make to airport and we board and are headed home.

Ok so this is my first attempt at a story. Let me know what you think. Comments are welcome. It will get more interesting later. You are beginning to see why I am calling this Twist and Turns. Let me know. E-mail me at frnceso@yahoo.com.
