Chapter Six

Digging Up The Past

Beep beep, beep beep, beep beep -- The sound of Chris's phone buzzed next to his ear, he opened his eyes to be greeted with the unwelcome sight of daylight blasting its way into the bedroom. Instantly he felt his forehead. The pain was intense, throbbing like mad, a reminder of the hell from the night before.

He scrambled for his phone to shut off the noise remembering why he set the alarm in the first place. As silence returned he looked around the room with half open eyes. His mouth felt alien, almost as if it wasn't his. The taste of stale spirits was putrid and his tongue felt twice its normal size. His stomach was another problem entirely. Not used to the punishment it had endured the night before it was putting up quite a fight against its new enemy: Sambuca.

Head still swimming, nose blocked and crusty, and most of his senses completely failing him, Chris somehow managed to stagger to his feet.

Still half cut he made his way out of the boys' room with the intention of making his way to the bathroom. He closed the door behind him as he left and held his head as it continued to pound with each step. He looked at the door to his own room as he walked past and started remembering exactly what had happened.

All the memories flooding back to him only worsened his condition and as soon as he pushed into the bathroom he dropped to his knees before the toilet bowl and spewed what seemed like his entire digestive system out.

He knelt there for ten minutes until there was nothing left to bring up. Strangely enough there was a feeling of satisfaction and relief after emptying his stomach of its contents and he slowly pulled himself to his feet to get the first glimpse of himself in the mirror. It wasn't a pretty sight. His eyes where bloodshot and swollen, he wore a sallow olive-coloured complexion and his nose and eyes where streaming from the strain of being so violently ill moments before. He shook his head at the sorry sight before him and turned on the tap, gently splashing his face with the cold water in a effort to wake himself up.

He felt like he had the weight of the world on his shoulders as his thoughts slowly crept back to David. Chris thought of David lying in bed and how he should be lying next to him. But more importantly he thought about what he had done to him, and how he had lost him. "What the fuck am I going to do?" He asked himself.

He dried his face and decided to go to his room to collect some clean cloths and a towel for a shower. He traveled as slowly as possible to his bedroom, eager not to aggravate his already furious headache. He turned the handle of his door as quietly as he could and edged his way into the room. He studied the room concentrating on David's bed where he was lying asleep, his chest gently rising up and down beneath the quilt. Mesmerized by the peaceful sight before him he made his way silently over to his own bed where he sat down and continued watching David intently.

Watching the boy sleep was the only pleasant part of Chris's life at this moment. He found the sight so calming and hypnotic that soon he was also drifting deeper and deeper into another sleep of his own. A sleep filled with vivid dreams of himself and David kissing.

They were outside in the corridor where he and Claire had kissed the night before, except this time Claire's image was replaced with the one he truly belonged with.

David had his arms wrapped around Chris and had him pressed into the wall. Their mouths were filled with vigorous passion and everything felt right. Suddenly Chris wasn't kissing David anymore. He was now an onlooker watching David and himself. But wait! It wasn't himself he was looking at.

He watched as the figure that looked like him transformed before his eyes. He walked closer to the pair to observe closer.

"What the fuck David" Chris shouted.

The pair broke apart to reveal this mystery kisser. It was Nathan.

They stood there staring at Chris and the strangest thing happened. Their clothes completely vanished and they where standing there with there hard dicks in each others hands.

"What the fuck is going on?" cried Chris. "You're supposed to be my friend Nathan, and YOU'RE supposed to love me, and OH MY GOD, get away from him you prick!!!"

Chris ran forward to punch hell out of Nathan but found that no matter how hard and how fast he ran he could not get close enough to do so. It was like a force field was protecting them.

"You've got to face the consequences mate," laughed Nathan. "Don't you remember?"

"Yeah, Chris, you've got to face the consequences," whispered a new voice in his ear.

Chris jumped back in fright to see Claire who now, for some reason, had a rope and began wrapping it round him with tremendous unnatural, unsettling speed. Within seconds he was bound tight and fell to the floor.

"What the fuck is going on? Get off me you bitch. David help me!"

David and Nathan started laughing manically at the sight before them, pointing at him and egging Claire on.

"Go on, Claire, fuck him hard!" screamed David.

"Yeah, the virgin needs a good shag," shouted Ben from the background who had now just joined the scene.

Chris looked back up at Claire to find she was completely naked and was about to straddle him. He looked down toward his feet to find he was also naked.

"What the fuck! This is isn't happening, this is wrong," said Chris as Claire pounced on top of him. He could still hear the manic laughter of his friends in the background all swirling together.

"Please, David. This is wrong. I don't want this. Help me please!" he begged.

Claire slapped him hard across the face. "YOU'VE GOT TO FACE THE FUCKING CONSEQUENCES YOU DIRTY LITTLE FAGOT!" she spat.

She forced her lips to his. He could do nothing. His body was completely bound and he was paralyzed with fear. Tears streaming down his face, Chris looked toward the boy he loved now, once again entangled with his best friend against the wall, kissing violently. Chris wouldn‘t let Claire enter his mouth and continued to protest: "David! David! Please! David!"

"Shhh, hey shhhh. Chris it's me, it's OK. It's just a bad dream."

Chris awoke with a start to find David standing over him with his arm gently shaking his shoulder. Chris was drenched in sweat, breathing deeply. About an hour had passed since he had fallen asleep again. "David, I'm so sorry. Oh god it was horrible. Oh god, David you don't know how much I love you."

David pulled his hand back and turned away quickly, sitting now on his own bed. "Don't say that. You don't mean it. Don't say it if you don't mean it."

Chris stood up and walked over to him still a bit shaky on his feet but feeling considerably more stable than what he had felt an hour ago. Sitting beside David he put his hand on his as David peered into his eyes.

"Of course I mean it. I swear to you, and I know it sounds cheap but I've never felt this way about anyone in my life. Please give me another chance. I made a stupid mistake. A really stupid mistake. I can't lose you. It hurts too much, David. You feel it too, I know you do."

There was a moment's pause while David thought how to answer. "I didn't say I don't feel it. But that doesn‘t change things," he replied.

"But why? If we love each other then why should we be apart? It makes no sense."

David stared at Chris annoyed at his last comment. "It makes perfect sense! Would you stay with someone you couldn't trust?"

Chris looked equally as irritated and stared back at David. "This isn't fair! You can trust me. You can trust me with anything."

"Then why are you going around getting it on with other people?" replied David getting more and more frustrated.

"I wasn't getting it on. It was just a kiss. It was an accident and it meant nothing."

David adopted a more sarcastic tone. "Well that's not what the bulge in your pants said!"

Chris stood up from the bed and started pacing. "So it's jealousy then?"

"Jealousy? Are you fucking having a laugh?" replied David, also standing up to meet Chris.

"Well you seem to be jealous of the fact other people might be interested in me."

"That doesn't make me jealous. If anything it makes me proud knowing you're with me and not them. There's a big difference between someone fancying you and then having their tongue down your throat."

Chris sat back down on the bed, his head in his hands in defeat. "I can't keep apologizing for the stupid kiss. All I can tell you is that I don't want anyone else, just you. I let you down, I get that. I let myself down too. I hate the idiots and the cheaters of this world. I think it's…I think it's demeaning.

"Yeah demeaning, that's the word. Like the way Ben uses girls and the fact that they mean nothing to him. I don't want to be like that. I would never treat someone else like that. It was an accident that got out of hand. I can't lose you over this, David. I'll do anything. But I can't argue just now. My head is fucking killing me, and I think I might be sick again."

David walked over and sat back beside Chris. "Don't expect me to feel sorry for you. It's self inflicted and you deserve it."

Chris didn't reply, he just sat with his head in his hands in silence.

"OK, OK, I give in. I believe you and I don't want to see you like this, Chris. I hate it. You mean everything to me. When I saw you with her I thought I'd lost you and that you had found someone better."

"Don't be stupid! No one comes close. I don't even want to look at anyone else. I just want you."

"I want to believe you. I want to give it another go and just put this behind us. But you better not let me down. I mean it, this is it. One more chance. No more. You need to be sure it‘s what you want."

Chris looked up at the boy he loved with his first smile of the day. "I love you."

"I love you, too," David replied as he leaned in to kiss him. "Oh my god Chris. You need to brush your teeth. That's disgusting."

"Oh sorry, yeah I wasn't very well before and…"

"I don't want to know. It's making me sick just thinking about it. Go and sort yourself out. You stink of booze."

"Sorry."

"God if I hear you say that one more time." They both smiled at each other and hugged it out.

"Don't ever leave me, Dave." sighed Chris with his arms still wrapped around him.

"I'm not going anywhere. Now go! Seriously! You stink!"

Chris collected what he needed and headed back to the bathroom, suddenly on top of the world again, despite the hangover from hell.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The rain was pelting hard against the windows in St. Paul's as a hung-over pair of friends sat together in the T.V. room. Ben and Nathan had just finished breakfast and were discussing the goings on of the previous night.

"What the fuck was all that about last night, I seem to remember shouting and then you leaving?" asked Ben.

Aside from themselves the T.V. room was empty and they had the music channel quietly playing in the background.

"Chris and David had a stupid argument." replied Nathan.

"Oh, why, what happened?"

"I don't know really to be honest." Then suddenly pointing to the next video on TV in an effort to change the subject, "Have you heard their new one yet?"

"Bollocks. You disappeared with Chris all night. You know exactly what happened." snapped Ben.

Feeling rather backed into a corner and not knowing what to do, Nathan ignored the last comment.

"You do don‘t you? Admit it." challenged Ben.

"Maybe I do. But don't you think if I did and I haven't told you about it, it might have been told to me in private?" replied Nathan in a stern voice.

"Oh come on it's me. It's not like I'm gonna tell anyone. I just want to know why the night ended so suddenly."

"Well you should ask Chris himself then. I'm not telling you, OK? I was asked not to."

"Oh whatever. Kiss his arse all you want you fag."

"You know what, Ben? Fuck you!" said Nathan as he stormed out of the room.

Nathan knew this was gonna happen. It's not like it had been a quiet night. Someone was obviously going to ask questions. They were lucky none of the staff had heard about their drunken episode or they would have been in big trouble for being underage and bringing alcohol into the home.

Nathan made his way up the stairs as he headed for Chris and David's room. He needed to talk to Chris and find out what was going to happen. He didn't want another interrogation from someone like Ben without knowing exactly what to say.

He reached the door to their room and knocked quietly. There was no answer so he opened the door to find Chris and David lying on Chris's bed one on top of the other kissing. They were fully clothed but that didn't stop Nathan from turning his head and averting his gaze.

They hadn't noticed him come into the room as they were obviously otherwise distracted. Nathan cleared his throat to make his presence known. "Eh hrrm."

Startled nearly half to death the boys quickly separated. "It's not what it looks like." blurted David.

"It's OK, Dave, he knows. I told him last night when I was upset. It's cool." soothed Chris.

"I take it you two have made up then?" asked Nathan. He look disheartened as he asked the question as though he was disappointed.

"Well…yeah, you could say that." said David with an awkward smile towards Chris.

"I told you it would work out, didn't I?" motioned Nathan to Chris. "Anyway, I'm happy for you guys, but we have a problem. People might start asking questions about what happened last night. Things must have been louder than I thought. I've already fallen out with Ben because of it. He wouldn‘t shut up and kept asking me questions."

"What did you tell him?" Chris asked looking worried.

"I basically told him to mind his own business. Don't worry. I'm not gonna tell people. I‘m not like that, it‘s not my place."

"Thanks, Nathan. I really appreciate that." said Chris.

There was an awkward silence as no one quite knew what to say next. Nathan closed the bedroom door behind him to shield from nosy neighbours. He turned around looking more serious.

"Look," Nathan began. "We need to get our story straight. I mean it's not just about the whole gay thing. People can't find out that you two are together. If the staff hear about it then one of you will be moved somewhere else. It happened before to some lad who was sleeping with one of the girls here. Jack, I think his name was. Anyway it was before you came here so you wont remember. I don't want either of you guys to go. I would miss you."

Nathan looked down at the ground in embarrassment and continued, "You're sorta the only friends I've got."

"You're my best mate, too." piped in Chris.

"Thanks, mate."

There was another awkward silence between the three boys. It usually is an awkward moment when compliments like this are passed between men. Men just never seem to know how to react.

The silence was broken with the abrupt sound of Chris's dulcet tones. "Well, all we can do for now is say we had a stupid fight. No one needs to know what it was about, all they need to know is it's sorted." said Chris in an official tone. "As for Ben, well we can think of something. Also you and me..." he added, glancing at David with a cheeky grin, "...need to behave ourselves."

"This is so weird," said Nathan as he shook his head. "It's… urghh, I mean you two, together."

"What's wrong with it? He's well fit," laughed Chris."

"I'm sorry, but it's to soon for the gay jokes, Chris." said Nathan.

"Look, mate, I'm still the same guy, I'm just happier now. Don't you want me to be happy?"

"Of course I do, It's just such a shock, I never once suspected a thing."

"Well neither did I, so that makes two of us. I think he must of drugged me or something," he motioned to David.

"I think it's the other way about, cause I still like pussy," replied David, straight faced.

They all burst out laughing.

"Yeah, right!" said Chris. "If you were any gayer, you'd be called Davina."

"God you two are confusing," ended Nathan.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ben was still sitting in the TV room alone, muttering swear words to himself, obviously still annoyed with Nathan from their argument before.

"What's up with you?" asked Steven as he entered the room.

"Nathan-fucking-Thomson. That's what's bloody wrong with me." growled Ben.

Steven laughed a bit dramatically to this. "Why? Have you two faggots split up or something?" He started laughing again, this time at what he thought was his witty remark.

"Oh why don't you just do one, Steven. I'm not in the mood."

"Nah, don't be like that, mate. I'm only messing with ya. Go on then, what has he done?"

Eager to spit out what was on his mind, Ben didn't care about who he was talking to. "He's being a prick. We was arguing before about something that happened last night. He wouldn't tell me why Chris and David have fallen out. He said it was private. Dick head!"

Steven suddenly looked more serious and had a strange almost worrying look in his eye. "Come on." he pressed. "Maybe it's time to do a little more digging on that weirdo. That David kid I mean"

"What do you mean?" asked Ben confused.

"Just follow me." replied Steven, leaving the room, quickly followed by a now even more confused Ben.

First they went to the kitchen which was also empty and Steven grabbed a chair and moved it into the middle of the room.

"What are you doing?" Asked Ben.

"You'll see. Just keep a watch and make sure no one's coming."

Ben went and stood by the door while Steven stood on the chair and took out his cigarette lighter. He lit it and held it above his head under the smoke alarm. It only took a few seconds for the flame to set it off and he quickly jumped down off the chair and put it back into place.

"Come on move! Quickly!" he said and grabbed Ben's arm as he fled the room.

They got back into the TV room where they watched a concerned Trish run from her office to the kitchen to see what the commotion was.

"Quick, we don't have much time," Nathan said as, once again, he dragged a bemused Ben out of the room and over to Trish's vacant office. Steven closed the office door behind him and swiftly moved over to the filing cabinet next to Trish's desk. He felt behind it and pulled out a small key that had been hidden out of site.

"We shouldn't be doing this," whispered Ben as Steven unlocked the filling cabinet, opened it, and started looking through the files within.

He completely ignored Ben and after a few seconds, pulled out a file. "Found it, lets go." Steven closed and locked the cabinet, quickly replacing the hidden key, and then exited the office running down the corridor towards the stairs. The sound of the smoke alarm was still audible as they ran.

They made it all the way to Steven's room where they closed the door behind them and sat on the bed. His room was an absolute tip, with clothes and rubbish askew across the floor. The smell didn't add anything pleasant to the mix either, and it was obvious that the dirty laundry had been there for some time.

"You're fucking mental, you know that?" shot an incredulous Ben. "Do you know how much shit we could get into?"

"Oh shut up, Ben. We got what we wanted, didn't we?" Steven replied as he waved the file in the air.

"Which is what exactly?"

Steven passed the file to Ben so he could read the name at the top. "David Henderson"

Ben just stared at the file for a few seconds.

"Well aren't you going to read it then?" demanded Steven.

"I don't think we should. I mean this stuff's really private. I wouldn't want people reading everything about me."

"Oh come on you pussy," and Steven snatched the file back for himself, wasting no time in opening it.

He began to reading out loud: "David Henderson, age 16, date of birth bla bla bla, place of birth, bla bla bla. What a load of shit"

He started turning pages and reading into himself. "Here we go. Past history."

He once again started reading, this time into himself while Ben sat beside him intrigued, but still filled with misgivings.

After a few minutes Steven's smug expression started to change. "Fucking hell! Fucking hell! I don't believe this shit!"

"What is it?" asked Ben.

"The little fucker is a faggot."

Ben started laughing. "Don't be stupid He can't be."

"Read it for yourself, mate. It's all there in black and white."

He passed the file back to Ben who started examining the file for himself:

"Past History :

David Henderson was brought to our attention via the police and social services in June 2010. He was the victim of physical, mental, and sexual abuse. His mother was killed several years prior in a car crash near their home and he has been living with his father James Henderson since then at their residence in Preston.

Living alone with his father he fell victim to his fathers abusive behaviour usually instigated by the consumption of dangerously large quantities of alcohol. David's living conditions where brought to the authorities attention when he called the emergency services for help after he was beaten once again and then sexually assaulted by his father.

He relayed the story for the police and told them that his father James Henderson had been addicted to alcohol since his wife's death and used it as a way to cope. He would constantly show violence towards his son after drinking.

Things got worse after David admitted to his father he had homosexual tendencies and had engaged in relations with a male friend. His father has homophobic views towards homosexuality and did not take the news well.

After coming home one evening intoxicated, James Henderson once again beat his son and this time forced himself sexually and violently onto his son. He raped him in what he said was an attempt to show him what it was like to be homosexual and to try and make him change his mind about gays.

James Henderson has recently been charged for these crimes and now currently resides in a mental institution for the criminally insane.

David has been taken from his father's care and has no further contact with him. He also attends counseling in an attempt to improve his damaged condition."

"Fuck me sideways. This is unreal, it's sick. I feel so bad for him." exclaimed Ben after reading the passage.

"What do you mean you feel bad for him? He's a fucking faggot. He doesn't deserve pity. Sounds like he got what was coming to him. He probably enjoyed it."

"So, big deal, he's gay. But he doesn't deserve what happened to him. I mean it's disgusting. His own dad."

Steven snatched back the file from Ben's hands. "Well I don't know about you but I'm going to have some fun with this."

"What do you mean? what are you going to do?"

"Hmmm" Steven wondered out loud. "I don't know yet, but whatever I do, at the end of it the little queer is going to wish he'd never came here."

He let out a short snort of laughter in amusement. He had an evil grin on his face which definitely meant trouble.

"You can fuck off out of my room now!" Steven spat, and with that Ben left, regretting ever telling Steven about his argument in the first place.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

James Henderson stared down at the mess before him. He couldn't believe what he had just done. What kind of man had he become? All he knew was that he had to put things right. He either had to make his son change, or eradicate the problem completely. To do that, he had to get out of this place. If that meant a few casualties along the way then so be it.

The male nurse he had just tackled had been no push over. He was a big guy and Henderson was in somewhat of a fog from all the pills they had been pumping into him. He had to move quickly, though. It wouldn't be long until someone came along and discovered the unconscious staff member.

He dragged him into the nearest store cupboard just off the corridor he was in and started removing both his own clothes and the clothes of the man he had attacked. He started pulling the staff uniform on. It was a little big for him but it would do.

Once fully dressed Henderson calmed himself down and took a moment to contain himself. He opened the door slightly and peeked through the crack. The coast was clear. He slipped out silently closing the door and leaving the half-naked nurse behind him.

He swiftly and casually walked to the end of the hall past the office on the ward and up to the security doors where he pressed his newly acquired nursing staff badge to the panel on the wall. The door gave a short beep and a click; he pushed through heading straight for the elevators in front.

It was 6:30am and the hospital was deadly quiet apart from the usual evening staff getting ready to leave or the morning staff who were either sneaking a last cigarette before the morning shift started or getting a coffee in one of the staff rooms.

He had been monitoring the routines of the staff since he had arrived last week and had picked the perfect time to make his escape. Security was at its weakest when shifts where changing.

Things were going well, he thought, as the lift descended to the ground, floor by floor then suddenly an automated voice announced, "Third Floor," and the lift came to a halt.

OK, OK, keep calm, as he fought his rising panic. You're dressed as a nurse, no one will be suspicious.

The elevator doors opened and in walked the one person Henderson did not want to see, Dr. Richards, his assigned psychiatrist.

Dr. Richards had his head in some papers attached to a clipboard he was carrying. He didn't even look at Henderson when he entered, and hit the ground floor button. It was a testing two floors for Henderson as he tried to remain calm and act as inconspicuous as possible. When they finally reached the ground floor, the doctor exited first.

Henderson looked around not knowing fully where he was as he had seen this floor only once upon his arrival. Unsure of his bearings he decided to go in the opposite direction of his doctor and turned left, heading down the hall and through some more double doors. The corridors down here where equally as quiet and abandoned as the ones he had left which is just how he wanted it to stay.

He strayed down several more corridors each one almost identical to the other and then, after ten minutes of wandering, accepted that he was lost. He was about to turn back the way he came when he noticed a little green sign above the door to his right which read "Exit."

"Now we're getting somewhere," as he pushed through it.

Behind it there was another flight of stairs which lead down to what appeared to be a supply room. He slowly crept down this flight of stairs until he saw, on the far side of this room, a large door with a push bar handle and the words "FIRE EXIT" printed across the panes of frosted glass.

He made his way across to this door, pressed down hard on the bar and pushed forward out to a desolate lower-level car park, the scent of fresh air and the touch of cool rain hitting him as he gazed into the distance where he could see a woods off on the other side of a large field. With the drone of the fire alarm sounding in the background Henderson dashed across the park to a small fence separating the parking area from the field on the other side.

He vaulted over the fence to discover a marshy sodden mess due to the rain, but still he kept running as fast as the elements and his tired body would allow. It took him twenty minutes to reach the edge of the woods where he turned, out of breath, to look at the distant hospital he had just fled.

He could just make out the people in the distance all grouping together outside in the car park, no doubt wondering what the hell was going on. You fools! I'll be long gone before you figure it out.

But, had he really done it? Had he escaped? The next few days would tell. All he knew was no matter what happened, he had to find his son and put things right. If that meant killing a faggot, then that's what he would have to do.

"I'm coming, David," he spoke out loud to himself in a manic tone, and with that, a crazed but determined James Henderson turned and fled into the woods and out of sight.
