"Room 1120?" I thought to myself as I got into the elevator that would take me to the level I wanted to. I walked around a little in search for the room with that number "Here it is!" I said nervously as I took a deep breath before I rang the bell.
The door was quickly opened and a tall young man appeared. He's about twenty three or twenty four, and he's really good looking "Hi! How are you doing?" he greeted me casually.
"Very good thank you. You?"
"I'm fine thanks. Come on in" he stepped aside to allow me to enter "I'm sorry my name is Joshua" he extended his hand.
"The name is JT" I took his hand and shook it. His grip was strong, but his hand felt so soft "So how do you want to do this?" I asked as I looked at him. I couldn't help but wondering why does he need to do this? With his dashing good look, he obviously could get anybody he wants. And judging from the hotel he stayed, he must be rich too. Why does he have to pay for this? Hmm strange? But who cares?
"What do you mean?" he looked a little confused.
"Ok! I'll explain it to you. I'll do anything you want but one thing I have to make it clear is I don't kiss on the mouth. You have to pay me $500 up front, and for every hour you have to pay me $100."
"How much is it for the whole night?"
I quickly looked up at him and arched my eyebrows "That's gonna cost you a lot"
"Just give me the number" he replied flatly.
"When do you want me to leave in the morning?"
"Hmm! How about 7 o'clock?"
"Right now it's 9 o'clock. It will be 10 hours. So you have to pay me fifteen hundred dollars even."
"Wow! You're quick" he commented.
"That takes a lot of practice"
"For this?" he looked confusing.
"No, for being an engineer. You have to use your brain a lot"
"You are an engineer?" he quickly asked.
"Not yet, but I will be soon."
"What kind of engineer?"
"Chemical Engineer. Look! I'm sorry but I have to say this. I'm not coming here to talk, and if you want to talk, then you have to pay me too because you're using my time."
He looked at me intriguingly "It's settled! You stay here till seven o'clock in the morning and I'll pay you fifteen hundred dollars. I can do anything I want right?"
"Yes, anything but kissing in the mouth and nothing kinky either" I said flatly.
"Ok! Then sit down I want to talk to you for a little while"
I shrugged "Fine with me! Oh and you have to pay me $500 first"
"Sure" he said as he pulled out his wallet and took out five $100 dollar bills and handed them to me.
"Thanks!" I took the money and put it away in my wallet.
"So how long have you been doing this? If you don't mind me asking."
"Hey I don't mind at all. You are paying me big bucks for this, and you're not gonna believe it when I tell you."
"Try me!"
"Today is my first day, and you're my first customer"
"Wow! Really?"
"Yes"
"So why are you doing this. You're going to be a Chemical Engineer. You will graduate soon. I mean you have a bright future ahead of you. Why are you doing this degrading job?"
I couldn't help but I felted anger quickly rushed all over my body "Look you asshole! I'm paid to service you but that doesn't mean you have the right to humiliate me and insult me. I don't take any shit from anybody. I could ask you the same question. With your look, I don't think you need to pay for sex? Why are you doing this? Furthermore, if you think what I'm doing is degrading what about you? What you do I think is even more degrading and pathetic" I said angrily.
He looked shocked at my outburst "I'm sorry I didn't mean it that way. I'm really sorry. What I was trying to say is you can do many other things to make money. You don't need to do this."
"How do you know I don't need to do this?"
"Uh…Uh…"
"Forget it! If you want to talk, let's talk. You can ask me anything, and don't worry. I won't get mad anymore. I think it over. You can think whatever you want. I don't care because it doesn't matter to me what your opinion is. And hey I'm paid really good for just answering some stupid questions, then I'm willing to answer anything you ask. So what else about my personal life do you want to know?" I said sarcastically.
"You have any sisters or brothers?"
I was taken back a little bit by his question. I didn't expect him to ask me this. After what I said I thought he wouldn't poke his nose in my personal life again. But I guess this guy is way beyond being nosy and crazy. Who would be so crazy to pay a big sum of money just to ask about private life of a stranger? "Only one sister" I replied shortly. I wanted to see what else he would ask next, and wondered how far this conversation would go.
"Does she know you are doing this?"
"Right now I don't think there's anyway she can find out."
"Why?"
Wow! This guy is relentless I thought. I have never seen such a person in my whole life "She's not in this country right now."
"Is she on vacation or something?" he asked moving forward a little bit. The way he acted, I assumed he was pretty interested to know about my life.
"No, she doesn't live in this country."
"Oh! What about your parents? Don't they know what you're doing?"
"Didn't I tell you that this is my first time? So how could anybody in my family find out? Especially my parents, they will never find out."
"Why are you so sure that your parents will never find out?"
"Because they died a long time ago"
"Oh! I'm really sorry" he looked down on the floor guiltily.
"Don't be! I'm not. They died when I was really young, couldn't remember anything about them" I said without a hint of emotion in my voice.
"It must be rough. It must be horrible not knowing anything about your parents."
"No, there are worse things in the world than that."
"What could be worse than knowing nothing about you parents JT? I couldn't think of anything?" he challenged me.
That was it. "I have never told anybody about my personal life in my entire life but I have told you so much already. Don't you know what the limit is? Don't you know when to stop? Don't even think that I'm obliged to answer your stupid questions because you pay me a large sum of money. There are things in this world are priceless that even money can't buy" I said angrily. Yes, to him my past, my life my just be something to satisfy his curiosity, but to me it would be totally different. It's my memories, my recollections of something that I had lost, something that I would never be able to retrieve. And it didn't matter to me how much he pays me, I would have never shared them with him.
"I'm sorry. I'm really sorry. What I've been trying to find out is why you are doing what you doing. I mean you will graduate soon to become a chemical engineer and make good money. Are you in some kind of emergency so you have to do this to make money fast?"
Again I was surprised by him. At least he could still do some reasoning besides being overly nosy. "This is the only reasonable question you ask me since we met. Yes, I'm in an emergency. I have a month maximum to come up with ten thousand dollars more."
He opened his mouth and about to say something but he stopped.
I sighed "go ahead! Ask whatever you want to ask"
"What kind of emergency? You don't have to tell me if you don't want to" he said timidly.
"I need to have the money so I can send it to my sister. She needs it for an operation, and there's no faster way to make money than doing this."
"You would do this for you sister?" he asked in disbelief.
"Why wouldn't I? I would give her both of my kidneys in a second if she needs them. Is that really surprise you that I'm willing to go this low to find money for my sister?"
"Wow! I could have never thought you could be so caring an loving."
"Why?" this time I asked confusingly.
"It's just that you are so, so cold. You act like you don't care and give a fuck about anything around you. I mean you didn't even feel anything when we talked about your parents' deaths."
"If you had been through what I have been, your parents' death would have never hurt you much. You are right when you said I don't give a fuck to the people and what happens around me. But that doesn't apply to my sister. She's the only person I have left in this world" I said as my eyes traveled out of the window, and I was lost in the beautiful blue sky momentarily. "Yes, she's the only one I have left in this world. I can't lose her now" I said lowly, almost inaudible.
"What happens to her?" he asked.
I didn't answer him because I was lost in my own thoughts.
"JT what happens to her?" he asked louder this time.
"What? What?" I said as I was brought back to reality.
"What happens to your sister?" he asked softly.
I looked at him for a few seconds. Somehow his face didn't show any sign of curiosity this time. I stared at his face as I looked deep into his eyes. He looked so different that I couldn't make it out what's so different about him. I was wondering, weighing if I should tell him. I have never told a single soul about my past. I have never let anybody come even close to the subject. Somehow the man sitting in front of me was able to do that. I always feel that I could never trust anybody in my life beside my sister, but the man I was talking for only a short period of time has broken the barrier that I've built around me. Maybe I was too exhausted from keeping it to myself. Maybe I needed to share it with somebody desperately. His face looked so genuine. When I looked into his eyes, his beautiful piercing blue eyes, I saw nothing, nothing but caring and sympathy. I felt that I could trust him by just looking at those eyes. I sighed as I decided that I would tell him.
"I have to tell you from the beginning if you want to know. I have to tell you so you understand why I would do anything for my sister." He just nodded.
"My family was really wealthy back then in my country. I was four years old when both of my parents died in an accident. My sister was thirteen at the time" I paused for a few second. Joshua didn't interrupt me. He didn't say anything as he sat there and listened to me intensely "Seizing this chance, my parents' relatives robbed every single penny my parents left us. We were left with nothing, even our own house where we lived. We were kicked off the street. What could a thirteen years old and her four years old brother do at such a young age? You could never imagine what it's like to be put out off your own house and sent off to live on the street. You could never imagine how bad, how miserable it has been for us to make through day by day. We have been well taken cared of all our lives.
We have never had to worry about the food, the clothes and shelter till that moment. All of a sudden, we had to be on our own. We had to beg for food, picked it from the garbage bins behind a restaurant. We lived like that for almost four years Joshua."
"By then, my sister was getting older, and she could work and make money. Our lives seemed to get easier and better than it was before. A few days before my 8th birthday something happened that changed our lives completely. I remembered that I stole some candies from a store. When I gave my sister some of the candies, she asked me where I got them. I told her that I stole them. She got so mad, I've never seen her so angry in my entire life. She asked me if I want to become like my parents' relatives. She asked me if I want to be like the people who robbed us of everything, the people who sent us on the street. I told her no, I never want to be like them, and I told her that I only stole some candies. I would never hurt anybody by just stealing some candies." I smiled as I flashed back to that day "I could still remember every single words she told me. She said `JT now you're small, so you steal small things. When you get older and bigger, you will steal bigger things, and soon you will become like our parents' relative. Do you want that to happen to you JT?' I cried so much when she told me that. I promised my sister that I would never steal again in my life. She said if I want something, I should tell her and she would try to get it for me. Even if she couldn't I still shouldn't steal. I told her that I want to eat chicken on my eighth birthday. I want to eat a whole chicken. But something happened that I couldn't eat any chicken on my birthday Joshua. Something happened that changed our whole lives completely."
I stopped as tears now began to cover lightly over my eyes. I stopped so I could control, I could suppress it down.
"What's happened JT?" he asked me softly.
"The day before my birthday, I got really sick. My sister told me that she already made enough money to buy a whole chicken for me. She said I have to get better so I could eat the chicken on my birthday and she also told me that she has bought me a birthday cake to celebrate my birthday. But as the day went by, I felt worse and worse. I knew that if my health kept going down like this, I would never make it. I wasn't afraid of dying Joshua, but I was afraid of leaving my sister behind. Yes life was harsh and horrible for us, but we still have each other. If I'm gone, she would be alone all by herself. I tried to fight against the sickness. I tried to fight for myself, and most of all I tried to fight for my sister. My sister realized that if I'm not sent to the hospital, I would die. But I told you before, we could barely afford our daily meals? Where could we find the money for the hospital? My sister told me that she had to go away for a few hours. She said I had to stay strong and wait for her to come back. She promised me that she would be back as soon as she could."
"When my sister came back about three hours later, she looked so exhausted and she could barely walk. But I remember she smiled happily as she told me that she has found some money and she would take me to the hospital. She assured me that I would be alright, I would get better soon. With the treatment and medication, luckily I recovered. My sister kept her promised and bought me a whole chicken when I got out of the hospital. Somehow our lives seemed to take a different turn from then. We didn't have to worry about money anymore. My sister told me that she has found a good job, and we could afford food and shelter. She could even afford to put me to school."
I stopped for a little bit to look at Joshua because he seemed to have a question for me but afraid to ask "You want to ask me something Joshua?" I asked him.
"Yes, I'm really sorry I don't want to interrupt you but I have to ask you something."
"Go ahead! I already told so much about my life already. I don't see why I can't answer another question." I smiled at him.
"I really want to know how did your sister manage to find the money to take you to the hospital out of a sudden?"
"It's a good thing you asked because I was about to tell you next. I didn't find out how my sister had the money until three years later. I have asked her so many times over the years but she always told me the same thing. It didn't matter how and where she got it, all it mattered is I was ok. But as I grew older and more mature, I understood that it wasn't easy for a girl to make money easily in our society. One time I asked her again, suddenly she got angry and forbade me to ask her about that again. I never asked her again, but I determined to find out. One day I pretended to go to school like every other day, but I sneaked back into the house and waited to follow her to work. What I found out only confirmed what I have suspected my sister of doing for a long time. She's been using her body to put me to the hospital, to put a roof over our heads and to send me to school. She's been using her body to make sure that I'm well taken care of, to make sure that I have everything I needed. I cried so much when I found out what she did for me. I didn't know what to do as I just walked around aimlessly. I went to the park, and stayed there. I wasn't ashamed of what my sister did.
In fact I loved her even more when I found out. When I went home, my sister was waiting for me. By the look on her face, I could tell she was furious. She asked me where I have been, and why I didn't go to school today. I didn't know how to tell her so I didn't say anything no matter how many times she asked. I thought that my sister would hit me. I thought that she would punish me till I would tell her. It would have mad me feel better if she had done that. My sister have never raised her hand on me Joshua, not even once, and that day was no exception. No matter how angry she was at me for skipping school, she didn't lay a finger on me. She just burst out crying. I was so scared, so scared because I have seen her cry for a long time. The last time I saw her crying was 7 years ago when our parents died. While she was crying she told me that she tried to work hard so I could go to school, so I wouldn't live on the street."
I had to stop because I knew if I went on to tell the story, I would cry. I looked at him and smiled sadly "Seeing her cry broke my heart Joshua. I kneeled in front of her and apologized. I promised her that I would never skip school again. We held on to each other and cried our hearts out. She told me so many things. She said she didn't want me to grow up to be a nobody, to be a good for nothing. Then she demanded to know where I have gone today. I never lied to my sister and I never wanted to so I told her. I told her that I had followed her to her work and I knew everything. Her face was as white as a sheet of paper when she heard what I said, and she was shaking visibly. She thought that after I found out, I would despite her, I would think ill of her."
"Ha! How wrong she was!" I tried to laughed "I told her that there's nothing in this world could make me think ill of her. There's nothing in this world could make me despite her. I told her that I wasn't ashamed of her, but I was hurt that she hid it from me. We only have each other in this world, we shouldn't hide anything from each other. I felt hurt because here she was suffering all along trying to make sure that I got everything I needed while I knew nothing about it. I couldn't do anything to help her. I made her promise me that from then on, she wouldn't keep anything from me.
I wanted to know everything." I looked up at Joshua and asked him "So now do you still think what I did for her is great after you heard what my sister have done for me? It's nothing compared to what she has done for me Joshua. There are so many other things she has done for me, but I think you got the point. I would do anything for her, ANYTHING."
"WOW!" was all Joshua could mutter.
From then on, two of us just sat there and talked about everything. He asked me about my hobbies, my interests, my school. We kept talking and talking. I realized that we had so many things in common. I felt so good that I told him about my past. I felt like I just lifted off a heavy rock of my chest. We were so busy finding out about each other's lives that we didn't notice it was almost two o'clock.
"Wow! Look at the time. We've been talking for hours. It's 2 o'clock already" I said when I looked at my watch.
"I know. Wow! I never talk this long to anybody. Jesus! I'm so sleepy and my back hurt" he said as he got up and stretched "I don't know about you but I have to go to sleep now. I'm exhausted"
"You don't want to do anything? Isn't that what you want when you call me over here?" I asked him suddenly.
"I'm sorry JT, but I don't think I can do anything. I'm really tired, but don't worry I'll pay you the full amount that you asked for."
"No, no, that's not what I meant" I quickly said as I took out the $500 and handed it to him "I won't feel good for taking your money for nothing. In fact I have to thank you though. I feel so good after talking to you. I don't think it's right for taking your money" I kept on yapping and yapping till I heard a low snore coming from him. When I looked at him, he was already sleeping comfortable on the bed. I put the money on the nearby table and about to leave the hotel, but I also felt so exhausted. I decided that I should sleep here and leave early in the morning. I got on the bed and lay down next to him, soon I joined him in the dreamland.
In the morning when I woke up, I couldn't see Joshua anywhere. I went to the bathroom but he wasn't there either. When I got back into the bedroom I saw an envelope on the table where I had put the money last night.
I walked over the table and opened the envelope. Inside I found fifteen hundred dollars cash, a check for twenty thousand dollars and a letter. I was so surprised when I see all this. I don't know why but I felt so angry suddenly. I felt like he's doing me a charity. Yes, that's exactly what he made me feel. I didn't tell him all this so he could take out his pity on me. I quickly opened the letter to read it
Hi JT
I don't know what to write, and I don't know how to begin this letter. I just want to say that I'm really glad that I have a chance to talk to you.
I was amazed, and really touched by the story you told me about your sister. I can not say that I understand how you feel and what you been through because I obviously can never understand that unless I experience it myself. I always got everything easy for me. I never have to worry too much about anything. That's why I was really fascinated by what you told me. I'm sorry if I have offended this you in anyway for my curiosity and nosiness. I leave here is fifteen hundred dollar cash and a check for twenty thousand dollar. The cash is paid for the money that I agreed to pay you for staying here till 7 o'clock. I'm sorry I can't say goodbye to you before I leave. You look like you need a good sleep so I didn't want to wake you up. I'm leaving you this check so that you could send it to your sister for her operation. I don't know if it's enough but I hope it would help. I hope the money is enough for you to back to your country to visit your sister. I believe she would be very happy to see you again. Please take the money JT. I know you and your pride. That's one of the reasons why I can't say goodbye to you because I know you wouldn't accept it if I give it to you personally. If you really love your sister as much as you said, then this shouldn't be a very tough decision for you. You said it yourself you would do anything for her, and right now I don't think anything is more important than you going back there and be there for her when she has the operation. When you go back there to see your sister, tell her I say hi, and what a great person she is. I wish her all the best wishes. I have to go now. I hope I will see you again in future but not like this (chuckles).
I was speechless after I read the letter. This guy kept surprising over and over again. I could never imagine somebody would do such a thing for a stranger, from what I've been through. I thought there's no such deeds in this world. I grew up witnessing, and experience myself all the sufferings, the misfortunes and cruelties. Joshua was right when he said my sister's health is more important than my pride. I took out my cellphone to book a ticket immediately after I read his letter. I couldn't help but felt so excited. I couldn't wait to see my sister again "I'm coming Sis. I'm coming"
I also write the story "Fated Love." If you love JC, romance and drama stuffs, go read it, i'm sure you won't be disappointed. I hope you all enjoy the stories.
