Steven woke up with Tom crying out in the night, Tom twitched as he talked with someone. Wrapping his arm around Tom, didn't seem to stop Tom from whatever he was dreaming about. Tom sat up in bed, asked "Where is he?" Steven was asking who, but not getting response. Hearing Tom, Bev came to the door, asking if everything was alright. Both not able to sleep, they went downstairs, Tom continued to make noises.
Soon Steven heard Tom calling out his name, Steven ran back upstairs, saying he was down stairs with Bev. Tom asked if he was coming to bed. Steven crawled under the cover's cuddling with Tom, when Tom kept twitching, to the point he almost pushed Steven off the bed. Steven sat on the chair, his head rested on his chest as he started to fall asleep, only to be woken by Tom. Giving up Steven went downstairs to sleep on the sofa. Noticing Bev sitting there leaning over to the one side, sleeping. He retrieved a blanket, wrapped it around her.
Tom woke up in the morning, Steven was not next to him. Concerned he got up, looking for him upstairs, he saw the other bedroom bed unmade, Bev was not in her room. Checking the other room, it hadn't been touched. Looking out the bedroom window and seeing Bev's car, Tom realizing Bev was there, he went back into his room, to put on some shorts. He walked downstairs to see the two cuddled up on the couch under a blanket. He was heading toward to sofa to wake them up, when Tonya appeared from the downstairs bedroom, asking him what was that all about.
Tom looked at Tonya strangely, as he looked at the two on the sofa, raising his shoulders in the I-don't-know gesture. Tonya looked at him, "I mean you?"
Tom didn't know what she was talking about. Tom walked over to sofa, touching Steven, who jumped which in turn woke Bev. Tom looked down at the two, as the two looked back at him. Bev was the first to speak, "Did you sleep well?'
Furrowing his brow, Tom gave her a quizzical look, when Tonya sat in the air chair looking as Bev did, "What was with you last night?"
Steven retorted, "You pushed me out of bed last night." Bev looked at him with a look, not understanding what was going on. "Who were you talking to?"
Tom looked around feeling like he was in an episode of `Twilight Zone'. He seemed to be the root of all this mystery. Tom sat back in the other arm chair, as he thought about the evening, not remembering anything. He could sense he kept the three awake all night.
Bev got up, wrapping the blanket around her, heading into the kitchen. Looking through the cupboards, she found the coffee. Steven's body was sore from sleeping on the sofa, he slowly got up, helping Bev in the kitchen. Tom ran his fingers through his hair trying to remember what happened last night.
Turning on the TV, Tom mouth dropped when they showed the morning show talking about the too hot' fireman what saved a little girl. Tonya's mouth dropped when they showed the calendar picture again. The women, obviously having wet panties, kept talking about their g-rated' fantasy with the fireman as she dramatically fanned herself. Announcing to the world, that he is available and is a father of three children. They obtained a smart-phone video of him carrying the listless girl out of the blazing home.
The news continued that the little girl is in stable condition, her name hasn't been released. The two ladies sat on their stools cross legs, as they continued to banter about their thoughts on this hunky fireman. Showing a copy of the calendar cover, calling him fireman Tom as the caption on the calendar labeled him. The other saying, I heard it is currently sold out and the company that creates them might be doing another printing. Tom couldn't believe the stuff they were saying like it was their right to reveal his personal information.
Tonya laughed, "Hey dad, do you have another child we don't know about."
Tom being upset, "They were referring to your mother,"
Tonya sat back in her chair, not used to seeing her father in this type of mood. She didn't want to bring the subject up again.
Bev sensing the tension asked Tonya what she wanted for breakfast. Tonya replied, "Eggs and sausage."
Bev smiled, "Thanks sweetie."
Bev was trying to think how to make lemonade with all the lemons, suggested, "Why don't you do the press conference with the little girl, she is an adorable. Let's show your human side, better yet, let them see the precious life you saved and deflect all the questions from you being the `scud stud' of the fire department."
Tonya mouthed, "Scud Stud?" as she looked in Bev's direction.
Bev continue, "I can get my in-house publicity department to come down here, I'll just give them direction to make this Sara feel special. I know they have a few reporters that they can invite, and we can hold a press conference at the firehouse, if the chief allows."
Bev started making phone calls and explaining how she wants the outcome, then they can release it to the news agencies, since it seems to be making national headlines. She called some legitimate reporters who owed her favors as well as some models to fill a room. Bev went to Steven's office, closing the doors as she orchestrated the event.
Tom turned to Steven, saying, "I don't want to do the interview, can't they interview the family and leave me out of it."
Bev got an idea when she heard the dog barking from next door, it was Sara's father walking the dog.
She quickly turned asking, "Who saved the dog?"
Tom shrugged his shoulders not remembering who did what, but he did mention Joel was in the burning house with him.
Bev quickly snapped, `Gotcha." Heading back in to Steven's office.
When Tom left for work, the reporters were waiting at the main entrance, Tom taking the mining lane drove back down the old road, barely getting by the trees that grew close to the edge, the mining road took him to the canal path, and with the help of the park ranger, he drove up tow path toward the gate that the ranger unlocked. He parked at the coffee shop following the tow path to the fire company, walking through the front door without getting noticed.
Sam was the next to gather Jake and Bev, taking the same route, though the reporters weren't interested in them, Bev thought it would be best they take the same path, so that they didn't tip off any of the reporters. As the park ranger locked the gate to the two path, no one was the wiser. Sam was a little more daring driving down the main street, parking in the parking lot of the restaurant. The three walked the short hike back to the fire company.
By this time, Bev's lawyers were contacting Karen's friends with legal documents stating they cannot use Tom's image without permission. This stopped the news media dead in their tracks, Tom directed Bev to the fire chief for she was asking to have a meeting with him.
While the reporters were waiting for Tom and Sara to drive down to the main road, the unmarked media Van from Bev's company appeared in front of the firehouse. Slowly the firehouse was filling to maximum capacity according the fire laws. This is when Steven got in his car with Sara and her family, driving down the driveway. The Diehl brothers' did a great job of keeping the reporters off the property, but traffic was tied up on River Road. The police were trying to keep it flowing. When the reporters saw the car driving down, they quickly started their cars, some took off in the direction of the fire company, only to find the building was filled.
Eventually Steven made his way to the main street, parking in the fishing access point of the Delaware. The four walked up to the firehouse along with the dog. Bev had her security people waiting for Steven, who shielded the traumatized family from the press. The main press waited outside while Bev's press people were all inside.
When the press conference started, the police chief thanked everyone for coming, commented on the tragedy in their community last evening, and how the community is coming together to help this family in need. He read the report of the fire, when they arrived and the brave firemen who fought this devastating fire. He quickly introduced Joel, who was seen on the last evening news as the firefighter who saved the family dog. At this time the family dog was presented and the standby's clapped, hooting for saving the precious life of the family dog.
There were a few statements made by Joel, about not being able to see, the smoke that filled the rooms, but God led him to the family dog that he saved. The Edelman's were introduced, and Sara clung on with fear to her mother, standing behind her not wanting to see the room of people. Sara's father spoke, saying how thankful to God he is for saving his family as his terrified little daughter was stuck in a room. He mentioned he was glad the firemen braved their lives to save them. I'm especially thankful for our firefighters and the two brave men who went inside.
A video displayed showing Tom carrying Sara in his arms. The video had been altered to cut off most of Tom's face when he removed his shield. The father turned toward the crowd to thank the fire inspector for saving his daughter, that he has plenty of gratitude for him.
Tom quickly stepped forward, shaking Mr. Edelman's hand and hugging Mrs. Edelman before stepping back into the crowd of firemen.
The press conference continued, opening the floor for questions. All steering clear of Tom, who was addressed as the fire inspector per Bev's requests. Joel and the fire chief answered the questions the best they could.
At the end of the press conference, the chief jokingly mentioned it was Joel who was supposed to pose for the calendar but had an unexpected emergency the day of the shoot. As the press conference ended, the networks were gathering their equipment, as they did not get the exclusive on the fire. The video had been disturbed to all the other media and was playing as breaking news.
Some of the commentators were disappointed, but the news conference did cover the necessary points.
As the day continued on, Tom received several requests to make guest appearances on several news/morning shows, only to turn them down and offer Joel, who was gathering a big fan base for saving the family dog. It was Joel who walked out the hero from this press conference.
As Joel walked outside, he quickly looked over to Tom and winked. Tom mouth `thank you', as he stepped out into the remaining press corps addressing how he saved the family dog.
Tom picked up Sara asking if she was `OK'. She shook her head, "No" as tears streamed down her face. Tom wiped a tear from her eye as he hugged her telling her everything will be alright. Every time a stranger walked up to Tom, Sara would bury her face into his shoulder, he turned and took her to the back room, away from the crowd. Her dad entered the room telling her she was a big girl and proud of her.
Sara held onto her daddy, asking if they could go back home. Her father explained they don't have a home right now, when she looked him in the eye, but Mr. Tom has a home for us. Mr. Edelman held onto his daughter, wiping the tears from his eyes as he did not want her to see him cry.
When Mrs. Edelman returned, she turned to Tom saying, "I can't thank you enough for all your help, I hope this nightmare will soon be over."
Tom patted her on the back, saying how he understood. Sam walked up to them and said their guest house is available as long as you need it to get back on your feet. Mrs. Edelman cried as she hugged Sam as tight as she could. Mr. Edelman shook his hand, saying we have a lot to think about, my family in North Carolina invited us down, and I think this is a sign to leave and join them.
Steven entered the back room, hugging his husband. Tom wasn't prouder that his husband stood beside him, Tom grabbed him tightly crying into his shoulder, telling him how much he loved him. Steven tightly hugged him back, saying, "I couldn't let you go through this alone."
Bev came in from outside, no one knew who she really was and how she orchestrated this whole event. Tom ran up to her, hugging her as he picked her up in his arms. The emotions were enough as she placed her finger over Tom's lips, not allowing him to talk, as she whispered into his ear, "Not a word."
The crowd was dissipating when the fire chief thanked Bev for taming the zoo. Bev took him by the hand, led him away from the commotion, heading to the canal for a short walk. She calmed the chief down, stating the reporters are at their next big story, this will be yesterday's news.
The next morning the Edelman's said good-bye to Sam and Jake, the husband had accepted the invitation to move to North Carolina with his family and wanted to start a new life there. Tom was sad to see them go, but he knew it was the right thing for Sara as the family starts a new life, leaving the destroyed one behind.
Sara ran up to Tom, hugging him as she thanked him for saving her life. She handed a drawing of her and Tom they she created with crayon on printing paper. She held it in front of both, explaining who everyone was in the drawing. Tom wiped a tear from his eyes, as Sara seemed in good spirits talking about how she was going to see nanna and papa. She was also going to see her cousin Lilly, who she will be going to school with and meeting all her friends.
Mrs. Edelman fought back the tears as she grew up in this area. She was hoping one day to return with Sara. Tom pulled a pen from his shirt pocket, wrote his address on the back of a business card, handing it to Sara's mother, saying if she ever wants to write. Mrs. Edelman smiled, hugging Tom as she held back her tears.
Sam, Jake, Steven, and Tom gathered as papa drove Sara and her parents away. The four sat there pondering what will become of the family. Hoping them success in their future. Steven placed his arm around Tom, as they returned to the house. Steven reassured everything will be alright, as Tom pondered going back to the fire site, inspecting what remains of Edelman's property. Not much was left standing of the fateful night, as Tom will be sifting through the debris looking for clues.
Steven turned on the morning news to see Joel being interviewed by the anchorperson, asking about saving the dog's life. Joel was eating up the attention as the interviewer asked him personal questions that the "public" wanted to know. Tom sat in the safety of his own home, chuckling as Joel hammed it up, knowing he was a better fit for fifteen minutes of fame better than he was. ___ Bev woke up in the morning to see Joel on the morning show, she chuckled thinking what did she create. She checked in on Tonya who was getting ready for classes, as Bev continued to get ready for a day at the office, acting like nothing out of the ordinary happened yesterday. Having her own successful company allowed her to pursue what interests she wanted. As she turned toward the kitchen, Stan was only wearing an apron. Bev sighed as she admired his backside, walking up she grabbed his ass cheek before pouring herself a cup of coffee. She turned to Stan, looking through the top of her glasses at him, asking if he was going to dress that way for work.
Stan kissed her on the top of the cheek, saying, "You did good yesterday." Bev flushed as she always did when Stan complimented her. She quickly cleared her throat, and Stan quickly turned around, as Tonya waddled into the kitchen. Stan handed her a plate, as she waddled back to the dining table. Bev looked at him again through the top of her glasses, saying you better put some glasses on, as she reached between her legs indicating he made her sore last night.
Bev kissed him on the cheek, turned and left. Tonya peeked her head into the kitchen asking what got into him last night, all she could hear was the bed banging against the wall, and Bev trying to quiet him for Tonya had to sleep and get up for school in the morning.
As Tonya went back into the dining area, Stan quickly stepped in his basketball shorts, excusing himself as he meandered upstairs. When he came downstairs the house was quiet, as he locked it up heading to the office.
