Chapter 28 - Wow! What a Day

This is Ty.

Our flight landed, and Tip and I made our way back to Tip's condo. When we entered, Mark and Zack were sprawled out on the oversized sofa. Zack was reading one of his management course books and Mark was reading a book on child psychology. How boring is that?

When Mark saw us, he looked up and asked, "How was your weekend? Did you get to know each other better. Are you going to buy Mrs. Quinn's house?"

I couldn't help but laugh, "Nano Mark, you just asked us three unrelated questions and never gave us a chance to answer. So here are your answers fine, yes and undecided."

Mark was laughing, "Two out of three ain't too bad. But I better warn you; Zack is ready to spring for the new digs. He can't wait to waste away in the apartment over the garage."

Tip couldn't resist, "Is that because he is over worked, or sex starved?"

Mark couldn't handle that, "Doctor Washington, your brother doesn't understand what sex means. He wants to go to the grave without ever knowing what sex is."

That was all Zack could take, "Ty, fire this bum. I don't need anyone bad mouthing me, and you should see how he treats your children. They have welts all over their bodies. When are you two going to decide to buy Mrs. Quinn's house? It is perfect. When, and if I ever make any money, Mark and I will be able to help with the expenses."

I started to laugh, "So Zack, you are telling me that you and Mark might be a thing, so to speak?"

"I didn't say that." Zack responded. "What I said is, that we would be able to help pay for the expenses. Besides, if you don't buy the house, half of Kansas City will be hunting you down including Kevin and Ryan. So why don't you make it easier on yourselves and talk with Mrs. Cummings and secure the money you need, to do whatever it is you do when you buy a house. Come on Mark, let's go to bed. These two old men can take care of the children and put out the fires. We have done it for two nights and now it is their turn."

The two younger guys disappeared and Tip and I sat down on the sofa, I asked, "Where did we go wrong?"

Tip looked at me, "Don't you mean, where did we go right? Now get off your fat bottom and call Mrs. Cummings in the morning, so we don't have to suffer through someone else telling us we need to buy Mrs. Quinn's house. Now let's go to bed. It has been a very long weekend."

This is Tip.

The next thing I remember was that a little body was sitting on me, "Uncle Tip, Nano Mark says you need to get up."

Billy rolled over to his Dad and kissed him, "Daddy, Nano Mark says you need to get up now. You have some phone calls to make and you have some appointments. Please get up."

I looked at the alarm clock and it said 7:30. I thought to myself, `Oh shoot, we forgot to set the alarm.' I punched Ty on the arm and showed him what time it was and we took a fast shower, and when we went downstairs, the only person there was Zack. Mark had taken the other children to school and Barbie insisted that she had to go too.

Tip and I were just getting ready to leave when Mark and Barbie returned. Before anyone could say anything the phone started to ring. Zack answered. "Yes Mr. Benson, Mark is right here."

He handed the phone to Mark. "This is Mark. ... Oh hi Beau. ... You and Becca are planning to come to Kansas City next week to look for a property to open an office. ... Yes, Zack and I can arrange to be here, but I am not sure where we will be able to accommodate you. ... I'll figure that out during the week. Do you have our address? ... Great, see you next Friday about five."

Mark hung up, "That was Beau and Becca Benson. They are planning to come to Kansas City this weekend to look for an office space for Zack to operate his office out of. Zack, perhaps you could convince Ty to move so he would be collocated with you, and that way you would have legal access readily available if you need it. Besides, Ty could probably use the company when he is not busy. The two of you could play tiddily winks together."

Both Ty and Zack went to grab Mark, but he was too quick, "Don't touch the hired help, or I will charge you with child molestation. Everyone get your bottoms moving or you are all going to be late for your appointments."

Mark was standing at the door as we all left. But I watched as he said goodbye to Zack. He held him a little longer than would be expected and said something. Zack just shook his head and hugged Mark again. I think I'm jealous. Ty didn't hug me like that. I hope it was because he has other things on his mind.

This is Ty.

I feel really rotten. `In the excitement of everything that had happened this morning, I had forgotten to demonstrate to Tip how much I truly cared for him. No, I think I should say how much I love him. Why can't I get this right.'

When I got to the office, Clarisse handed me my schedule for the day and left to get me a cup of coffee. I stopped to speak to Shawn and Colleen. They both informed me that they had a wonderful time visiting with my family and hoped that we had enjoyed our first class arrangements on the flights.

My mind was spinning faster that a top. "How did you two know about our first class seats on the flights?"

Colleen was very nonchalant, "Oh, the flight attendant who checked you in just happened to be my partner, Leanne. She also just happens to be Mrs. Quinn's and Mr. and Mrs. Jenkins' niece. So you better buy Mrs. Quinn's house quickly or you will be hounded to death."

Clarisse had been standing there laughing, "I don't know what is going on with Mrs. Quinn's house, but I have a call for you on line two Mr. Jefferson."

I picked up the phone, "This is Tyler Jefferson. ... Oh hi Mr. Jenkins. .. You think I would be a fool to not buy Mrs. Quinn's house for $150,000.00. ... Sir, I may buy the house just to keep everyone from telling me I need to buy the house. ...I know sir, but could you meet me in the office at one this afternoon? I have a proposal I would like to make to you. It would be beneficial to both of us I think. ...Okay see you at one."

I called Rita Cummings at the bank, "Hey Rita, this is Ty, would you be available to meet with me at 3:00 this afternoon? ... Okay, see you then."

I left for my meeting at the Kansas City Chief's office and was I shocked at the conversations that went on. Mr. Hunter looked at me, "Ty now you know why we want you to be our exclusive legal representative. You have been on the players' side and now you are on the other side. We are all in this for our financial gain, but lately the players have become too demanding and greedy, and they haven't been producing the results that were expected."

I left that meeting wondering what I had gotten myself into. I stopped for a sandwich to go at the sub shop and took it to the office and started to read the documents that Neil had given me. I put them aside, because my mind wasn't concentrating on them. I called Clarisse and asked her to come in.

Clarisse came in and I asked if she would contact the private investigator that we had used previously because I had two more cases for him to investigate.

She returned and announced, "Mr. Burns is on the line."

I picked up the phone, "This Ty Jefferson, I want to thank you for the excellent job you did in the Jenkins case. I have two more cases I would like to have your assistance on. One is critical and the other is in about two weeks. They are similar but different. I really would like to meet with you personally to give you the particulars that I have. ... Great, see you at two."

"Clarisse, don't make any more appointments for this afternoon. Would you please ask Colleen to come in?"

Colleen appeared and I handed her the documents that Neil had dumped on me, "Colleen, please make copies of these contracts. I am expecting Mr. Jenkins shortly. When the copies are finished, please bring them to me. I may want to visit with Mr. Jenkins about them."

Shawn escorted Mr. Jenkins into my office. Mr. Jenkins went on the offensive, "Okay Mr. Jefferson, what is it that you wished to visit with me about?"

I looked at Mr. Jenkins, "You don't waste any time, do you Uncle Richie?" I summarized what had happened in Denver over the weekend. "Quite frankly sir, I was hoping that you might join me as a partner or in some capacity to assist me. I am already overwhelmed and I am just getting started. I need someone who has been in the business for some time to keep me on the straight and narrow."

Mr. Jenkins was shaking his head, "Ty, I am flattered by your offer. I would love to be involved in some small way. I would enjoy working part time, but I know my wife would never permit me to do more than so many hours a day or on special projects. Before I commit to anything, I would like to discuss this with her."

Shawn knocked, "Colleen has most of the documents completed and asked me to bring these copies to you, and there is a Mr. Burns here to see you. He says he is a little early."

A light went on, "Please show Mr. Burns in. I would like Mr. Jenkins to meet him."

I was caught totally by surprise when a young man, who looked to be about 16, slouched into the room. He was wearing baggy jeans that hung around his hips, an old worn out sweat shirt and he had a baseball hat with the Kansas City Royals logo on backwards. "Howdy, I be Phillip Burns. I believe I was to meet with a Mistah Jefferson."

I thought to myself, `I blew this one.' I looked at Mr. Jenkins and I could tell that he just as confused as I was.

This Burns person plopped himself down in a chair and put his leg over the arm. He sure didn't waste any words, "Now Mistah Jefferson, you said you had some work for me to do?"

"Mr. Burns, before we get to what I had in mind, I would like to introduce you to Mr. Jenkins. You did some excellent work in his case on short notice."

Phillip Burns surprised us, "Your honor, it was with great pleasure that we took your son and daughter down. They and their spouses are works of art as Mr. Jefferson so capably pointed out in his defense."

Phillip Burns sat straight in his chair, "Sorry for the ruse, gentleman. But this is the way my two assistants and I are able to get so much information. No one even suspects that we have our master's degree in criminology. Everyone treats us like hicks from the sticks and spills their guts. So Mr. Jefferson, what do you need us to do now?"

Both Mr. Jenkins and I were dumbfounded by the transformation. I explained the Lane case and the Lansing case.

Phil, as I was directed to call him, was shaking his head, "Ty, it might have been nice if you could have given us a little notice, especially on the Lane case. I don't know how much information we can garner on such short notice."

Phillip Burns stood, "I'll get my operatives working on it. Mr. Jefferson, I don't suppose you would be looking to take on an associate would you? My wife just received word this morning that she had passed the bar exams and she doesn't really want to set up her own practice. We plan to start a family, but she needs to work so we can pay off our college debts."

Both Mr. Jenkins and I started to laugh.

Phil was irritated, "Why are you laughing at me?"

Mr. Jenkins took the initiative, "Phillip, my young man, we are not laughing at you, but at what has occurred. Ty has just asked me to become associated with his practice. He has gotten himself in so deep that he needs all of the legal help he can get. So the fact that your wife could help him is a godsend."

I recovered my composure, "Okay, here's what we are going to do. We are all going to meet at Tip's condo at 6:00 tomorrow evening so we can get to know each other. I'll ask Nano Mark to fix something simple. I will probably be ready to get drunk after I blow Rocky's trial tomorrow afternoon. Now gentleman, if you will excuse me, I have an appointment to meet with my banker to discuss a mortgage loan."

Editor's Notes:

Well, It's about time he decided to check on getting a mortgage loan. I think everyone else was ready to move into that beautiful house. I somehow think things will work out pretty well.
