Previously...

I began to pour the pills into my hand and then shove them into my mouth. I stuck my mouth under the sink with each handful to get some water to wash them down. I dropped the bottle to the floor when I had emptied it.

I fumbled for the bathroom lock and opened the door. Chance and Nancy were both standing there.

I looked at Chance. "Fuck you bitch. I don't need anybody!"

I staggered towards the door. I was feeling so dizzy and sleepy and so many other things that I couldn't describe.

I opened the front door, went out slamming it behind me. I walked down the street. I didn't know where I was going I just knew that I didn't want my last moments being at that house where I was just betrayed by my boyfriend and my best friend.

Finally I felt as if I couldn't walk anymore I looked over and saw a flower garden in front of one of the houses I had just passed. I walked over to it and lay there amongst the sweet and slowly fading smell of the flowers

Chapter Six- True Friends

Liz's viewpoint...

I sat there listening to Linda as she was giving me report of the patients the night before. This is what we did every morning as the oncoming nurse came on and the night nurse got ready to go. I'd be doing the same thing when I left at seven thirty that evening.

I had gotten some experience behind me having worked on the medical surgical floor for the past four years I decided it was time for a chance and was transferred to ICU. It was challenging working in ICU and rewarding at the same time.

"Ok our next one in room 228, seventeen year old male admitted last night due to an overdose of valium last night. He is stable but not conscious yet. He is in arm restraints to the bed just in case he wakes up and still wants to hurt himself. His name is Mitchell Mitchium. No family a few friends come to visit him."

"Are you serious?" I asked. "I know him. He was here back when I worked on med surge floor because he was beat up really bad at school."

I listened to Linda as she gave report on the last patient, who was a motor vehicle accident.

When she was done, I looked at her and smiled. "Thanks you Linda. I'll see you tonight."

"Ok." She said as she got up from her behind the nurses station. "Now I'm going to go home and clean a little and head to bed."

I got up from my seat and walked down the hallway to room 228. One of the first things I did in the morning was do a full head to toe assessment of my patients. I decided to start with Mitch.

I knocked on the door, which was half way open. I waited a couple of seconds and then went inside.

Sitting next to Mitch in a chair was the girl that I had met at the restaurant on Saturday. She was asleep. I looked around the room, looking for Chance.

No sign of him anywhere.

That's odd. I thought. Maybe he went downstairs to the cafeteria to get some breakfast.

I woke over to the sleeping girl and placed my hand on her shoulder and gave her a little shake. Her eyes opened and she looked up at me.

"Are you his nurse?" She asked.

"Yes. Hannah. Right?"

"Yeah."

"We met at the restaurant the other night." I said.

"Yeah I remember you."

"What happened to Mitch?" I asked.

"It started at the restaurant on Saturday. One of Chance's friends had walked in on Chance and Mitch that morning and Chance threatened him telling him to stay away from him and his friends. Jason, his friend, sent Chance a message that night saying that he was going to tell everyone at school that Chance was gay and was going to put it on Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter which he did. Everyone at school was just fine with it. Yesterday Jason left a note in Chance's locker calling him fag and a bunch of other stuff. We all went together to the principal and seeing how there is a zero tolerance policy at the school; Jason was suspended indefinitely from school. He then told Chance's mom who I'm sure you know is a big homophobe. She left work early to be sure to be there when school got out, confronted them and told them to get out of her house. Chance says that he's not gay. Mitch is hurt goes into the bathroom and takes a bottle of valium. I found him passed out in the flowerbed at my house."

"So Chance broke up with him?" I asked.

"I guess you could say that. I called him as soon I found Mitch. He told me what happened. I was so angry at him I just hung the phone up." She told me. "Just a few days ago he was saying how much he loved Mitch and stuff then he goes and pulls this."

"I know how you must feel." I said comfortingly. "If you need anything then just let me know."

Chance's viewpoint...

I refuse to go to school that day. I locked myself in my bedroom. I felt like crap. My mom was a bitch and I hated her. I hadn't talked to her since Mitch ran out the door and I went in the bathroom and found the empty pill bottle.

Then there was the call from Hannah saying that she found him lying in her flowerbed and that he was nearly dead.

I didn't know what to do. My mom told me that I could stay if I broke it off with Mitch, which is what I did. I felt terrible ever since.

Why did I do it? Why did I break the heart of the person that I loved?

Jason's viewpoint...

I probably should have felt terrible about what I had done, but I didn't. I hated that little asshole Mitch Mitchium ever since the day he had leached onto my bud Chance. I wasn't gay or anything never thought about Mitch in a sexual way at all.

I just hated Mitch and hated him even more for turning Chance into a fag. I knew that if it wasn't for Mitch, Chance wouldn't have ever though about another guy.

I decided I would give him hell for it until he broke up with the little queer. I left the note in his locker at school not thinking about the zero harassment policy at school.

Nick, Hannah, Mitch and Chance all went to Mrs. Mayberry with the not which resulted in my suspension indefinitely. I was pissed off. I was beyond pissed off.

I knew there was one more hope. I knew how much Nancy, Chance's mom, hated homosexuals and thought that it was an abomination to man kind.

I did what I had to do and called Nancy at work and told her about her son. I still remember the conversation as it played out in my head.

"Hey Nancy," I said after the call had been transferred back to her office and she answered.

"What are you doing out of school so early Jason?" She asked me.

"Lets just say I'm not going back to school thanks to your son and his friends." I said.

"Why not?"

"Well lets just say your son and Mitch are more than best friends. I left a note in his locker called him a fag and they took it to the principal and I got suspended. There's no telling what they have been doing in your house Nancy." I told her with a twisted grin on my face.

"Are you sure?" She asked. "They are really close for guys."

"Think about what you just said. They are really close for guys. A little too close. Lets just say I walked in on them in Mitch's bed and they were both naked and making out." I told her embellishing the truth a little bit.

"I'll take care of this Jason. Thanks for telling me."

We hung up the phone and that was that.

Here I was two days later sitting in my car thinking about this. It was all over school that Mitch had tried to commit suicide and I knew I was the responsible. Did I feel bad? Hell no. I am spoiled and always get what I want no matter what.

I looked at myself in the review mirror of my car. A twisted grin on my face.

"Damn boy you look good." I said aloud

Hannah's viewpoint...

I had missed school that day and sat in the hospital with Mitch since he was admitted last night. Nick wanted to stay with me but I insisted that he went to school because he had already missed too many days.

I guess I dozed up because the next thing I knew I was woke up by Mitch yelling.

"Chance! Chance! Where are you? Chance!"

He shouted and tried to get out of the restraints that his hands were in. He pulled and tugged at them trying to get free.

"Calm down. I'm here." I said as I stood up and walked over to his bed. "I've been here since last night and Nick is coming after school."

"Chance!" He yelled even louder. "I want Chance go get Chance."

I assume that his yelling could be heard down the hall, because the door opened and Liz and another nurse came in the room.

"I see you are awake." Liz said with a smile on her face. "We can hear you all the way down the hall sweetie. Chance is not here."

"Get him please. I need him." Mitch pleaded. "I need to see him. It was all just a bad dream.

Mitch was sobbing. It was breaking my heart to see him like this. Chance and I had lived across the street from each other since we were kids. He was a year older than me and we used to hang out all the time. It was actually him that I was friends with first.

"Chance is not here." I told him calmly. "Chance is the reason why you are here."

"He loves me. I need him." He was sobbing loudly now.

I looked over at Liz.

Liz walked over to Mitch and rubbed her hand through Mitch's hair. "Please calm down for me."

I looked at the clock on the wall. It was a quarter until four and school had gotten out almost an hour ago. Where was Nick at?

I reached into my pocket and took out my cell phone and called Nick.

"Hello."

"Where are you Nick? Mitch is awake and is yelling for Chance. I don't know what to do."

"I'm coming up the elevator. I'm probably going to make you mad for what I'm going to do, but I'm sure you will get over it."

"What are you going to do Nick? I'm in no mood for anything."

"Be there in a minute." He hung up.

I closed my phone and put it back in my pocket.

"Nick is coming to see you," I told Mitch.

"Please call Chance for me. I need to talk to him. I need to see if everything is alright."

I looked into his brown eyes. All I could see was sadness.

There was a knock on the door, the door opened halfway, and then Nick came in. He immediately walked over to his bed. He grinned his big cheesy grin that he got when he was up to something.

I glared at him.

"I got a surprise for you buddy." He told Mitch.

"Really?"

Nick turned and looked towards the door. "Come on in."

The door opened all the way and Chance walked in. I glared at him.

"What are you doing here?" I snapped. "Its your fault that he is here anyhow."

"We are going to go now." Liz said speaking for both herself and the other nurse that had come in the room with. "We will both be right down the hall if you need anything. If I hear fighting out of this room, I won't hesitate to call security."

She and the other nurse turned around and walked out of the room, closing the door halfway behind them.

Chance just stood there staring down at Mitch, expressionless.

"I love you." Mitch told Chance.

Chance didn't say anything, but continued staring down at Mitch.

"I know you do." He finally said.

"Don't you love me too?" Mitch asked.

Chance looked around the room at Nick, Mitch, and me. "I can't do this." He said as he turned around and raced out the door."

"That was one of the most stupid things that you have done Nicholas Jackson." I told him.

"Well it seemed like a good idea. Chance wasn't at school today and I went to his house he had himself locked up in his bedroom. I thought it would go different."

"Well, you thought wrong. Now didn't you?" I asked.

"Stop arguing." Mitch said as he burst out in tears. "I don't think I can go on living without him."

"Don't you dare ever try that again." I told him.

"My life is over Hannah. Where would I stay when I get out of here? I have nothing and I am nobody." He cried even harder.

"You could come stay with me or Nick." I told him.

"You don't have any room. Neither of you do. You have three bedrooms, your parents, your sister and your brothers. And Nick is in the same boat as you with room."

"Don't worry buddy. We will figure something out. Don't worry." Nick said comfortingly.

Mitch's viewpoint...

I didn't sleep well at all during that night. I tossed and turned until they finally gave me something to make me sleep. I had dream after dream about Chance that night. We were sitting on his bed just holding each other.

Both Nick and Hannah had stayed the night in my room. There was a cot that had been brought in and they were both lying there sleeping.

First thing that morning Liz came into my room and woke me up.

"I have some good news and some bad news." She announced as she came into my room and sat down on my bed. "Which one do you want to hear first?"

At the sound of Liz coming into the room, both Hannah and Nick raised up in bed.

"I guess the good news would be good, seeing how I haven't had any of that in awhile.

"Well the doctor is releasing you today." She replied.

"And the bad news?"

"He has ordered you to seek inpatient care for depression at Panorama Health. I'm sorry Mitch." She placed her hand on mine and squeezed it some. "Do you want to hear some more good news?"

"We'll help you through this." Hannah said with a big smile on her face.

"Yeah buddy." Nick piped up.

"I guess." I said flatly.

"Well, Gin and I have been talking and we have the room at our house and want you to come stay with us when you get out." She said smiling down at me.

"Are you serious?" I asked.

I was excited. I had been worried about where I was going to stay once I got out of the hospital and now I knew where I would be.

"Yes. I make good money here and Gin makes pretty good money at her job and we both want us to come stay with us."

"Why do I have to go to Panorama?" I asked. "I won't try it again."

"The doctor ordered it. Its out of my hands, but I am going to ride there with you and make sure you get settled in ok. Is that fine."

"Yea." I replied. "How long will I be there?"

"I don't know Mitch. It could be twenty four hours at the least as long as eleven months. Just remember you have friends like Hannah and Nick that love you and you have your two lesbian mommies to come home to when you get released."

I smiled and let out a small laugh.

"Thank you." I replied.

She looked down at me smiled and then kissed my forehead.
