The Tyler I knew - Chapter 4
"I have to work tomorrow" Tyler said as they walked down the steps from getting ready for the day.
"What time?" Andy asked.
"I have to be there at 4 o'clock and I work until 11. Will you be in school?" Tyler asked.
Andy chuckled a bit. "No actually. I am suspended. That's part of the reason I was in McDonalds the other day. I had some problems at school, I went into the office and got into an argument with the Principal and then left. I found out from mom when I got home after seeing you at McDonalds that he had called to inform her and said that I was suspended for two weeks."
"Oh, what happened?" Tyler stopped walking and turned around to face Andy.
Tyler explained the events of his last day in school as Tyler listened.
"They didn't even care to hear you out?" Tyler said in awe.
"Not a bit. Oh well. I'm not too worried. I am thinking about home schooling the rest of the year. It's my last anyway." Andy said.
"Then we can both teach each other!" Tyler said smiling.
"Sounds like a plan! Do you want me to take you to your house to get some clothes?" Andy asked Cautiously.
"I can just wash these or something." Tyler said rather quickly.
"Hey, stop worrying. I'm not going to judge you on your family. Besides, I will sit in the car, alright?"
"Alright, I guess." Tyler said and headed out the front door.
Tyler directed the way to house as Andy drove. Ten minuets later they pulled up in front of a light yellow brick house. . "Well, I will be right back. Wait here, ok?" Tyler begged.
"I'm not going anywhere." Andy said with a smile.
Tyler exited the car and walked quickly up the sidewalk about fifteen feet and up his long narrow walkway leading up onto the porch of a small, single story brick house. He knocked on the door and waited. A few seconds later the door opened and Tyler walked in and out of sight.
"Who're you?" A young girl had appeared next to the car.
"I'm Andy, who are you?"
"I'm Tyler's sister, Erica"
"Hello `Tyler's sister Erica' how are you?"
"Is this your car?" She asked, not answering his last question.
"Sure is! Hey, do you know how long he will be?"
"Nope, I have not been in there yet. She's probably yelling at him for something, it's nothing new" Erica said.
"She do that a lot?" Andy asked.
"Yep, it's the only thing she knows how to do I think." Erica said as she stared up towards the house.
They both turned as Tyler came storming out of the house with a woman yelling behind him.
"Why don't you go live with your faggot friend then!" The woman yelled out the door.
"Oh shut up you stupid bitch!" Tyler yelled back as he walked down the sidewalk.
The woman turned, walked back inside and slammed the door.
"I see she's in a good mood today." Erica said laughing.
"Yeah, what's new?" Tyler said as he sat down in the car. "You doing alright, sis?"
"Oh yeah, I am fine." Well it looks as if I am going to have to stay away for a while. Is there anyway I can get a hold of you?" Tyler asked his sister.
"You can call me at my friend Jessica's! That's about the only place, you know the number, right?" Erica said leaning in the car a way's.
"Yeah, you be careful, alright. and stay out of trouble!" Tyler said looking at his sister.
"I'm never really in trouble now am I?"
"No, thank god!" Tyler said.
"We can give her Marks number if you would like. He won't mind, I am sure!"
"Ok, if you are sure it's alright." Tyler said turning to Andy.
Andy handed her the number and told her to call if she needed anything at all. They said their goodbyes and Andy and Tyler drove off.
"You alright?" Andy asked Tyler.
"I didn't expect anything less before I went in there." Tyler said smiling.
"Well, like uncle Mark said. you can stay there as long as you want. Alright?" Andy said.
"Ok" Tyler said.
"What do you think about cooking dinner for everyone tonight and inviting over my mom? I know she really wants to meet you. It is Sunday you know. Family's get together on Sunday's." Andy said smiling at Tyler.
"If you want! I am alright with it!" Tyler said, looking a bit nervous.
"You're sister is alright there isn't she?" Andy asked.
"Yeah, she stays at the neighbors mostly. I think the only time she goes home is to get more clothes. If she tried to take her things with her, mom would turn her in as a runaway, so she mainly leaves her things there and goes in once and a while to keep up an appearance. As you can see, she stay's away just like me."
"I guess I would too. How old is she anyway?" Andy asked.
"She is the oldest 14 year old you will ever meet!" Tyler said. "She makes me look like a 10 year old at times."
Andy nodded towards the bag Tyler had in his hand. "Did you get enough clothes?"
"I didn't know what all we would be doing or where we where going so I brought some extra." Tyler said, getting the idea that Andy didn't mean to grab so many.
"Not a problem. I would have told you to just grab all of your things, but I don't have a lot of room in my car as you can see." Andy said smiling.
"I don't have much." Tyler said, turning to look out his window. "It isn't like mom gave us any money."
"Don't worry about it, if you need anything else we can go to the store or something." Andy said, reassuring Tyler.
The two arrived home a while later and hung out together watching television. Andy had called Mark to see if inviting his mother over for dinner that evening would be ok, then called his mother to invite her. The two started preparing dinner at 4 o'clock.
At 5 o'clock a red truck pull into the driveway. The lady driving, who wasn't much taller than Tyler got out. She was very pretty, this had to be Andy's mother. Tyler understood where Andy had gotten his looks. She had shoulder length wavy brown hair, and was very slim.
"Hey mom!" Andy said as he opened the front door for her to come in. "This is Tyler!"
"Hello Tyler! It's so great to meet you. I've heard a lot about you!" She said with the most comforting smile Tyler had ever seen.
This is what a real mother's supposed to be like, this is what Tyler always wished he had. A mother who was glad to see him, let alone his new friends.
"Hi!" Tyler said shyly.
"A shy one huh?" She said with a grin. "Andy didn't mention that this morning when he told me all about you!"
Tyler just smiled nervously.
"Well, my name is Sheryl. But I would appreciate it. that is if you don't mind, if you would call me mom. All his other friends have called me that, and that's how I feel towards them. Just like a second mom. Is that alright with you, dear?"
"I, uh. yes ma'am. Tyler said stuttering a bit.
"No need to call me ma'am either. But it's great to see someone has respect for their elders" She said looking at Andy.
"You're not an elder, mom!" And protested. "You're not that old!"
"A lot older than you are boy, that's why you should show some respect!" She said hitting Andy in the arm with her elbow.
"Yes ma'am. Would the dear old lady like to eat now?" Andy said sarcasticly to his mother.
"Yes I would!" She answered in a threatening tone.
"Well you can't. Uncle Mark isn't here yet!" Andy said.
"Where in the world is he? Out gathering up all the hot guy's and not leaving me any?" She said smiling.
"No, him and Dave ran in after some drinks for us all. They will be right back. I am sure we can go get the table ready though!" Andy said.
The three went into the kitchen and prepared the table and set out the food. Their time was impeccable. Uncle Mark and David walked through the door as they all sat down.
"I wish I could come home to this all the time!" Mark said with a smile.
The four spent the next hour joking around and getting to know each other. Tyler was impressed at how well Andy's family got along.
"Well it's been fun guy's but I have to go home and put all those papers in order for work tomorrow, otherwise my boss will fire me." Andy's mom spoke up and glancing at Mark with a grin.
"Your boss is a jerk, huh?" Tyler said to Andy's mom causing everyone to start laughing.
"Yes he sure is!" Mark said with a smile.
"Mom was referring to Mark, he's the one who runs the farm here." Andy spoke up, still lauging.
"Oh, you work here.. I.. I'm sorry.." Tyler said, concentrating harder on taking a drink.
"Don't worry about it, I have been called much worse." Mark said. "Besides, I can't fire her, she own's half of it all too!"
"Well, you boy's have a good day!" Andy's mom said, getting up and kissing all of them on the cheek. "Love you all!"
Andy jumped up. "Let me walk you out, mom." And followed her out the door.
Mark looked at David and then at the door. David, taking the hint got up and excused himself from the table and walked into the living room.
"So Tyler, what are your plans?" Mark asked turning to Tyler.
"What do you mean?" Tyler asked, starting to get nervous.
"Do you want to stay here?" Mark blurted out. You are more than welcome to. Please don't be mad at Andy, but he said you had it rather bad. He didn't get into details but he told me you don't much like home. So I guess this is an invite to stay here. You are more than welcome to. I don't have a problem with it, and we both know Andy sure won't." Mark finished with a short laugh.
"I didn't tell Andy this yet, but when I went home today to get a few changes of clothes my mom told me I was not allowed back." Tyler said, looking down at his plate.
"Well then it's settled. You're staying here!" Mark said with a comforting smile.
It got silent for a moment, then Mark spoke up again. "Don't feel bad about it, I am completely confident that you will be a wonderful house guest. Treat this like your home, I won't accept nothing less."
Tyler nodded and spoke in a quiet voice. "Thanks."
"You're very welcome" Mark said. "Hey, do you have your license?"
"No, mom told me we didn't have the money for it, that is why I am working so much to save up money." Tyler said, sounding saddened.
"Do you like your job at McDonalds?" Mark asked.
"Not really, but it pay's."
"I see, well how about this." Mark said moving closer. "It's coming up on Harvest season and I have a lot to prepare and then all the fields to tend to. Have you ever worked on a Farm?"
"No never. Why?" Tyler asked.
"Would you like to work for me then?"
Tyler sat quietly for a moment.
"Tell you what, I will put the offer on the table and you take the time to decide." Mark said.
Tyler nodded.
"Here is what it will be." Mark started. "I will pay you $10.00 an hour, you will do labor, but I won't work you to death. I will pay for you to take the drivers ed course and we will see about getting you something to drive. I will withhold so much from your paycheck until it's paid back. Does that sound good?"
Tylers eyes got big, but he remained sitting quietly.
"I will take that as a yes." Mark said, laughing again then continued. "You willl learn to operate large equipment, and I don't require you to work long hours. At least until harvest time. Do you accept it, or do you want time to think about it?"
"No, I will do it! But that is a lot of money." Tyler said with surprise.
"What? Ten an hour? That's not a lot at all. It can be hard work. I know you are not used to it, but I will give you time to adjust. Just be honest and do try not to let me down. Deal?"
"Deal!" Tyler said with a smile. "But there is a problem. My mom will not sign for me to get into a Drivers Ed Class."
"How about you let me deal with that, ok?" Mark said with a smile. "When do you want to start?"
"Tomorrow?" Tyler said excitedly.
"Don't you have to work tomorrow?" Mark asked.
"Yeah." Tyler answered sounded sad.
"Well, how about you go in to work tomorrow and talk to them. See what you can work out. Maybe turn in a two week notice?"
"Sounds good!" Tyler said almost instantly.
Andy walked back in the door. "What did I miss?" seeing that Tyler looked Excited.
"Andy! I realize it is your day off, but why don't you take our new employee here and show him around the other building and the farm. Take my jeep, and let Tyler drive. He can't hurt that old thing." Mark said with a smile.
"Every day is my day off! But I am sure I can handle that." Andy said. "What will he be doing?"
"He will be working closely with you. The paperwork your mom is working on is a new combine. We will have two so we can get through this year quicker. We lost a lot of crop last year and I feel it is time to get more equipment. Now don't go getting too excited but you are going to be on your own this year. He will be running grain cart and you will be using the combine on your own. Are you sure you are up for it?"
"Most deffinatly!" Andy said.
"Good! Now you two go, I will take care of this mess."
Tyler and Andy headed out the door without another question.
"Here!" Andy said as he passed Tyler the keys to the Jeep.
"But I have never driven before!" Tyler said with surprise.
"Well you're going to have to learn because you will be doing a lot of driving around here, even without your license."
Tyler walked to the drivers door and climbed in. Andy showed him the proper way of starting it, and placing it in gear, and they were off.
"Don't go so fast, you're going to kill us!" Andy said lauging.
"I am not going that fast!" Tyler said back with surprise.
"Yeah, I know. That was sarcasm. Speed up a bit, it isn't like there are other cars to hit here. Just bugs, birds, and little furry creatures, and right now they are all moving a lot faster than we are, so get on it a little bit!" Andy said nudging Tyler in the leg.
A few minuets later they were at the barn on the other end of the property.
"Why is it he needs this much farm equipment, there isn't a lot of farm land here, it there?" Tyler asked as they walked in the shop door.
"We have about 200 acres here, and several other places on this end of the county with just as much if not more." Andy said while climbing up on the big green farm equipment. "This is a combine. It's not exactly the newest but it isn't real old. We are supposed to be getting a new one that's why he's hiring you.
"Oh, so what is that over there for?" Tyler asked pointing at another large green vehicle.
"That is a Grain Cart. We use that to carry the crop after we harvest back to the trucks to be taken to grain mills or to our grain bins. It hooks to a tractor, which you will be driving. Right this way I will show you that." Andy said, motioning Tyler back outside. "It's right around back here.
"Tell me that's not what I have to drive!" Tyler said looking a bit scared.
"Sorry to say, but it is!" Andy said lauging. "That, my dear is an 8650 John Deere. An awesome tractor, isn't it?"
"It has EIGHT WHEELS!" Tyler said, looking as if he were about to pass out. "And they are all nearly as big as the barn!"
"That it does. I love working here! I love big equipment." Andy said, winking at Tyler.
"Funny." Tyler said walking closer to the Tractor.
"Yes I am!" Andy said wrapping his arms around Tyler from the back. "What do you say we check out the rest of the farm?"
The two got back into the Jeep with Tyler driving. Fifteen minuets later, after checking out the Grain bins and driving around the edges of the fields they pulled up to the very back of the farthest field and stopped.
"Stop here a minuet. You hear that?" Andy said looking off into the tree line.
"Yeah, what is it?" Tyler asked.
"It's 4-wheelers." Andy said getting out of the Jeep.
A moment later two ATV's exited the woods and headed straight for where they were standing.
"Seth!" Andy yelled at them waiving.
The two boys pulled up and turned off the bikes.
"What's up, man?" the boy on the red 4-wheeler said climbing off and walking up to Andy.
"Not a lot, just showing the new employee here around." Andy said making a motion towards Tyler.
"I thought your dad was going to hire me to do some work this year!" The boy said, looking a bit upset.
"He may still. He keeps saying that last year we lost a lot of crop because we didn't have enough time or help. So just ask him!" Andy said.
"That's what I have you for, to put in a good word!" The boy said. "So does your friend here have a name?"
"Yep, this is Tyler. Tyler is going to be staying at my uncles and working." Andy said smiling.
"Just out of curiosity, is the same boy from the field yesterday morning?" Seth said with a large grin.
"Yep! He sure is. Andy said in a proud way. "Tyler, this is Seth. I was telling you about him after his nutcase dad showed up in the field yesterday.
Tyler nodded.
"He's a jerk isn't he?" Seth shot off. "Well it's for that reason I will have some problems getting my dad to let me work for your uncle. I think he suspects your uncle to be gay as well."
"When are you just going to tell him about you?" Andy asked.
"Probably around the time hell freezes over!" said Seth looking a bit sad. "Wish my family was like yours. I doubt my mom would care at all, but my dad would have a heart attack, I am sure of it!"
"Grow some balls man!" Andy said laughing. "He does have some, right?" Turning to the other boy, making him blush.
"Of course I do!" Seth said defensively. "This is Gregg. He's 14."
"And I suppose you two are not out to just ride the 4- wheelers?" Andy said with a smile.
"We are going to go down to the tree house next to the river" Seth said with enthusiasm. "Care to join?"
"No, not this time. I am sure you two will have plenty of fun without us." Andy said in a serious tone. "Besides, it's getting late and we have to be up early in the morning.
"Alright then, but you're missing out!" Seth said getting back on his 4-wheeler and starting it.
"I'll see ya later! You can come over later this week if you like!" Andy
"Mike is staying the week, mind if he comes too?"
"Not all all!" Andy answered
"Alright, see you later then!" Seth said as he drove off.
"Why do we have to be up so early tomorrow morning?" Tyler asked getting back into the Jeep.
"Cuz we have some things to do tomorrow." Andy said passively. "And don't ask what it is."
"He was kinda cute!" Tyler said as they walked onto the front porch. Realizing what he'd just said, added. "Not quite as good looking as you though."
"Yeah, I know" Andy added back "C'mon, lets get ready for bed."
"Good idea, I am tired." Tyler said walking for the stairs.
The two took their turns in the shower and headed for their bed.
Tyler laid there looking at Andy sleeping peacefully, thinking about his own life and the horrible things that he's been through. He can't remember the last time he was ever so happy about something and didn't want it to end.
"Please don't go away." Tyler whispered quietly to Andy, and kissed him on the forehead, then dozed off to sleep.
**Chapter three wasn't the best, in fact if I could go back I would change a lot in it. As I have said before I am not the greatest at this writing thing, and hope to do a lot better in the future. Please be patient for I really am straining my brain to do this right. Sorry it took so long to post another one, I had intended on giving up on it, but have recently changed my mind and decided to pick up where I left off and try to turn it around. Again, feel free to email me at andy_9529 @yahoo.com with comments, and/or questions. Thanks again for the emails.
