The Tide Began to Rise
Chapter 9

<Brent’s POV>
I watched Tyler walk up to his front door. I’m lucky to have met and become friends with him. Anyone would be lucky enough to have the chance to do so. He is the perfect example of how you shouldn’t judge a book by the cover. He hides his feelings underneath the long dark clothes. My guess is he does that in the hopes he won’t let anyone inside that could hurt him.

I watched as he went inside and closed that door. I reached over to put the car into reverse. I looked over and saw that Tyler had left his bag.  I turned off the car, grabbed the bag, and started walking up towards the house. As I got closer, I heard screaming. Not yelling, but screams of someone in pain. I listened harder and realized it was Tyler that was screaming out. I pulled my phone out and called 911.

“911, what is you emergency?”

“You need to get to 208 Fairview Dr, Right now. It’s life or death. And send an ambulance.” I hung up the phone.

I ran the rest of the way to the door. I busted the door in. When the door flung open, I stopped dead, I was frozen in tracks. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. This man, who had to be Tyler’s father, has one hand around Tyler’s throat and with his other hand held a gun. He was pointing it at a terrified woman. She had to be Tyler’s mom.

Without thinking, I raced towards the man. I tackled him with all the force I could muster. But I was too late. Just as I made contact with him, he pulled the trigger. She dropped to her knees and put her hands over her chest and fell to her side.

I stood up as fast as I could, and before the guy could regain his composure, I kicked him in the head. He was unconscious. I turned and went to Tyler. I bent down and heard “I love you Brent.” Tyler stopped breathing. I began CPR. I didn’t know what I was doing, just that I saw in movies.

Someone hit me from behind. I looked at who it was. It was Tristan. I stood up and punched him as hard as I could right square in the face. As I did I heard sirens outside. The cops had arrived. They came in and grabbed both me and Tristan.  I managed to break free and rush back to Tyler.

I grabbed his hand and said “I love you to Tyler, don’t leave. You can’t be gone.” I started to cry. The paramedics came in and started CPR. They put him on a gurney and took him to the ambulance. I had to stay behind and tell the cops what I saw. I did the best I could with Tyler’s well being on my mind.  Everything had happened so fast. After a while I couldn’t take it anymore. I told the cops that I would finish later. I went to me car and drove to the hospital.

When I got there, I asked where Tyler was. They told me he was in surgery. They told me they got him breathing but he hasn’t regained consciousness. I asked what he was in surgery for. They told me that for sure they know he was a broken nose, a broken leg, and a broken arm. The receptionist told me that when the x-rays are down, they will know more.

I sat down in the waiting room. “Was there more that I could have done?” I started to beat myself up. “I should have walked him to the door. That way I could have stepped in sooner.” Tears started to fill my eyes. “Tyler is the first guy that I have ever held feelings for.” The tears started to fall down my cheeks. They fell off my face. As they hit the floor, the only sound that I could hear was the one the splash the tear made. Time seemed to slow down. Everything went into slow motion. My sobs seemed to be the only thing that went normal speed.

After 2 hours, a doctor came out and asked for the family of Tyler Cox. I walked up and told him I was the only person here for Tyler.

“Well, I would prefer if you were family. I can tell you care about him, so I will tell you. As I’m sure the nurses told you, Tyler has a broken arm, nose, and leg. When we took some x-rays, we found that he also has two broken ribs. One of which pierced his lung. He is still in surgery, and should be alright. I will come back out and let you know if anything else comes up.

I told the doctor thank you. He walked away and I sat back down to wait. “Should I call someone to let them know? Who would I call?” I thought about whom Tyler’s friends are, who I saw him spending the most time with. Then it came to me, Brianna. “She might know what was going on with his dad.” I pulled out my phone. I looked though my contacts list. I realized that I didn’t have her number. “Who would have her number that I Know and talk to? ………………….. James would have the number.” I found his number in my list and gave him a call.

“Hello?”

“Hey James, its Brent, I’ve got a question for you.”

“Hey, what do you need?”

“I was wondering if you have Brianna’s cell number.”

“Yeah, what do you need it for?”

“I will let you know later.”

“Ok, her number is 402-971-0401”

“Thanks dude.” I hung up the phone and entered in the number that he gave me. I took a deep breathe and pressed send. Then phone rang 3 times, and then Brianna answered.

“Hello?”

“Hey Brianna, this is Brent, you need to come to the hospital. Tyler’s here………..”

“Be there in 15 minutes.” She said and ended the call.

I hung up then began to think. She is going to have to do at least 90 miles per hour to get here in 15 minutes. I guess I would do that very same thing if my best friend was in the hospital.

Just as she said, Brianna was here in 15 minutes. She came running through the doors and straight up to me. I could see she had been crying.

“What happened? Where is he? How is he doing? Have they told you anything? What do you know?”

“Brianna……….Take a breather, Tyler will be fine. The doctors told me that he has a broken leg, arm and nose. He also has two broken ribs. One of the ribs pierced his lung.”

She started crying again. I pulled her into a hug. Tears began to fill my eyes once more. We both stood there crying with each other in our arms. She was the first to pull away.

“So ……………………. How did this happen?”

“Well, we were hanging out at the mall. He told me that he should be getting home. I dropped him off and started to leave. I saw that he left is bag in my car, so I went to take it to him. When I got to the door, I heard yelling and the sounds of a fight. I kicked in the door, and his dad was trying to kill him.”
“Oh my god, how could his dad do that? Tyler is his son.”

“Didn’t you know that was going on?”

“No”

“Oh, I thought that he would have told you since you two are best friends. I only know because I saw all the bruises on his back and chest. When I asked him he didn’t come out and say it, but I knew.”

“If Tyler told me that was going on, he would not have been living in that house. I would have called the cops.”

We sat down in the chairs and talked. We talked about anything to keep our minds off what was happening. Not completely off, but enough to keep us from crying.

“Doctor, we patched up his lung. All of the fluids have been drained” said a nurse.

“Ok, let’s get this boy patched back up and get him into recovery.”

The nurses and doctors all began sticking Tyler up. All the machines that were monitoring his vitals were showing that everything was going great. The machine monitoring his heart was going beep….. Beep…..beep…..beep…..beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee………………………..

Doctor he is flat lining.”

“Get the defibrillator.”

The nurse got the machine and charged it up.

“CLEAR” the doctor called out. He shocked Tyler. The machine on his heart still flat lined.

“Turn it up…………………………CLEAR” he sent another pulse of energy through Tyler body. Still a flat line showed on the machine.

“One more time…………………………….CLEAR” for the 3rd time Tyler’s body got a surge of energy. For the 3rd tie his body jumped. For the 3rd time everyone in the room hoped and prayed that that shock would bring the boy back. For the 3rd time the heart monitoring machine held the long steady beep.

“One more time doctor?” asked a nurse with a tear running down her cheek.

“I’m sorry, but no more. We have to call it.

“The doctor left the room to go tell the people waiting what has happened. Just as the doctor was beginning to talk, he heard a nurse calling his name. He spun to see who it was. When he saw her, he rushed to her to find out what was going on.
