Chapter 3
I had spent too long trying to pick out the right shirt and now I was late. I hated being late. Who was I trying to look good for? A couple people I hadn't seen since high school and a bunch of college students??
I shook my head as I quickly rounded the corner onto Marcus' block. Looking at the endless road reminded me of the summer days we had spent riding our bikes, playing soccer, and enjoying the almost unbearable heat during our younger days. As I approached the house, I wondered if Marcus moving back would start a new chapter of friendship for us.
The sound of classic rock and loud voices drew me in the direction of the party, even though I could've walked here blindfolded. The olive green two story house looked the same as it did when I was little. Ben, Marcus' dad, always made sure the house looked immaculate. Even after his wife had died and his mind began to deteriorate, he had men come out replacing gutters, restoring roof tiles, and even adding a room when his grandson was born.
As I passed the gate into the property I noticed piles of wood chips, mulch, potted trees, and big rocks. The doing of Jenny I had no doubt. Moving back to her hometown was probably the last thing she wanted to do so bringing some Southern California with her was probably her way of coping.
"NICKOLAS IS HERE!"
I was so busy judging the choice in plant life that I hadn't noticed that Marcus was in the front door. His stance was wide, arms were stretched upwards so his hairless pits were visible, I could tell the drinking had started well before 5pm.
"Hey buddy! Haha. May I officially welcome you back home?"
"Thank you thank you. And may I officially welcome YOU to the new and improved Barlowe residence." He said as he gestured towards the unfinished lawn before beckoning me inside. "This is Jenny's little project that she's doing, something to keep her busy while she finds a job," he explained. "But I promise you the inside is magical..."
Apart from a couple boxes in the foyer the house looked exactly the same as it did when I was here three weeks ago. I pat Marcus on the back.
"You've had too much to drink my friend."
"What are you talking about?" He slid behind me, and smacked both sides of my head. "Do you see it now??? A giant flat screen to watch the game on, a fridge just for beer over here, a portrait of me dressed in exotic furs hanging over..."
I let him play out his delusions while we walked to the kitchen. Always a joker. I had no doubt in my mind some of his ideas would leave his brain, but there's no way Uptight Jenny was allowing a life size replica of Joe Montana to stare at her while she ate breakfast.
I interrupted his MTV Cribs moment.
"Where's Konner? I wanna give the birthday boy his gift." I waved the box I had been carrying in the air.
"Oh uuh I think he's in the basement with some friends that drove up to stay for the week. You can just leave the present over there, he'll open it eventually. Come on, let's join the party."
~
I was right. The backyard was full of maybe 30 people: from our high school class, random people that went to nearby schools that I had seen once or twice, and others I had never seen before. Marcus went around introducing me to everyone. Most pretended that they remembered me. Typical when you spend most of high school trying to fly under the radar.
"And you remember Jenny's best friend, Laura." He said as we made our way towards the picnic table.
"Oh yes, how could I forget my date to every single dance senior year." Laura was probably one of the only people that I still was in contact with after all these years. She had stayed in town after high school, gone to community college, married some up and coming software developer, and was now living her life being one of those soccer moms that yelled at the coach when her kid didn't get put in the game. It was the lifestyle we all looked down upon in our late 20s, but somehow she pulled it off so you didn't want to ring her neck every time she talked to you.
She gave me a big hug. "Where have you been? Tom and I have been trying to have you over for at least 2 months now! You never leave the house." It stung a little, but it was true "Come see a thrilling piano recital full of four year olds playing Hot Cross Buns over and over with me next week." Her smile said I love my kids, but her eyes were full of pain.
"As much fun as that sounds, my rules for the summer include no calls from my agent, tons of alcohol, and no activities including anyone under the age of 18, sorry my dear." We laughed as we both knew even if it wasn't summer I would never have agreed to such a torturous event.
"Still I feel like I never see you nowadays. You're always writing the next bestseller or recovering from writing the next bestseller." She swung my arms back and forth like we were two kids on the playground.
"Didn't we just go to that barbeque in the park uptown?"
"Babe, that was in April...it's June!"
"Okay okay okay. Next week, anyday you want, i'll be there, promise. As long as it doesn't involve your adorable demons" I leaned down and kissed her on the cheek. It was then that I noticed the black cloud looming behind her.
"I don't get a hello?" Jenny took a sip of her drink before rolling her eyes towards me. Other than the giant baby bump around her waist she was unchanged from high school. Perfect porcelain skin, shiny brown hair, accompanied by soulless hazel eyes.
I skipped the pleasantries, something I wish no one would notice. "How are you Jenny? And a late congratulations on the baby."
"Mm thanks and I'm great. Oh yeah moving in the middle of summer while being eight months pregnant on top of trying to host a party in a house full of boxes while I can barely stay on my feet. I'm fantastic."
It would seem that her personality had not seen any growth either. Marcus rushed to her side and whispered something in her ear which seemed to calm her down. I opened my mouth to say something quietly to Laura and she gave me a look that she definitely uses on her kids when they misbehave.
"Nick, you want something to drink? Vodka sod-...oh Tito's is gone nevermind. Margarita? A mule? Anything buddy I've been taking bartending lessons online!"
I left Laura to entertain Jenny and walked with Marcus towards the bar he had set up by the shed. Seeing as I only really knew two people here alcohol was going to be a necessity to make it through the night.
~
It took me a good 10 seconds to try and get up from the table and that's how I knew I wouldn't be finishing the drink in front of me.
"Whereyagoin I wa' just about to tell the story about when we snuck off in the middle of the night to go see Prince in San Fran!"
"Marcus...we were all there. We took MY CAR!" Laura laughed, her hands reaching across the table to shake him. "Jenny please remind your husband we've all been friends since we were like eleven."
Jenny leaned over to kiss her husband while I somehow got it out that I was going to the restroom.
I had no clue what time it was. The sun had gone down, the string lights above us had turned on hours ago, no one left except the four of us, just like old times. I hadn't expected to stay long, but I was having so much fun catching up and reminiscing about the old days. Even Jenny had seemed to lighten up after a couple hours.
I had trouble opening the screen door back into the kitchen, but when I finally opened it Konner was standing in the kitchen. Hand in a bag of chips I could tell he had been watching my struggle.
"Heyyy there he iiiiiss. Whereuv' you been? I haven' said happy birthday yet!" I couldn't tell if the way I was speaking was because I was trying to seem cool or because of the tequila in my veins.
Konner widened his eyes and nodded his head as he grabbed a glass from above the sink. "It technically isn't my birthday anymore but thanks."
He filled the glass from the sink and handed it to me. I downed the glass while I squinted at the microwave clock. Shit 1am.
"Whoa I gotta head home!" I set the glass on the counter before turning towards the door.
"You should hit the bathroom before you go and get yourself arrested for public intoxication."
My mouth fell open and I clutched my invisible pearls, clearly insulted by how he could think I lacked such class. He started pushing me down the hall as I loudly protested, but my bladder quickly reminded me why I had come inside in the first place.
~
The fluorescent bulbs assaulted my eyes as I looked at myself in the mirror. The kid wasn't joking. I was a mess. My hair looked like I had just rolled out of bed, my collar was uneven, and somehow most of the buttons on my shirt had come undone. I turned on the faucet. The ice cold water on my face felt refreshing as I tried to wipe the drunk out of my eyes. I grabbed a towel and patted my face dry.
"That's mine."
I hadn't even noticed Konner was still with me. He was leaning against the doorframe with his arms crossed and an expressionless face that reminded me too much of ones I had received from his mother back in high school.
"Oh sorry uh..." I tried to hand it back to him which he was extremely confused by and truthfully I was too. I folded it neatly and put it back on the rim of the sink. I walked over to the toilet before looking over at him.
"Do you mi-, can you um like..." I had suddenly forgotten how to ask a simple question.
His stance nor his face changed. "I'm just here to make sure you don't fall over and hit your head or some shit."
After an awkward pause and no movement from him, I unbuttoned my shorts and pulled it out. As I retracted the foreskin around my dick head, a steady stream forcefully hit the water. I closed my eyes and sighed with relief as countless margaritas left my body.
"Why are you commando at a birthday party?"
My face undoubtedly turned bright red as I hadn't expected him to be watching me that closely.
"Why are you looking at my dick?!" I exclaimed. I squinted my eyes as I noticed my dick begin to stiffen. I tried to focus on anything other than Konner staring at my cock.
"I wasn't looking at your- I mean I was but it, you just pulled it out! What else was I gonna do?" His voice had gone up an octave.
"Anywhere, but me! You're the one that insisted on staying while I pissed!" Goddamn how much had I drunk? My penis was almost half hard. I squeezed it and pushed it down hopefully hiding the fact and trying to force the piss out faster.
"You're shitfaced! I was just making sure, ugh whatever. Just hurry up." Much to my relief he turned around. As the flow of piss began to subside I squeezed out the last drops and tucked my now 7 inch hard dick under my waistband. Jesus fucking Christ.
I finished up by washing my hands and shaping my hair with some water.
"You done?" Konner asked as he turned around.
"Yeah, I'm gonna head..." I pointed past him signaling that I was trying to get by. The sooner I left, the less time he had to notice the boner basically pointing up at him under my shirt. He stood unmoved. There was a beat before he spoke. "I'll walk you home."
~
We walked up the path to my front door. Thankfully the cool air and awkward silence had calmed my dick down enough where my heart didn't feel like it was going to jump out of my chest. His gaze had stayed forward, hands in the pockets of his sweats while my eyes stayed glued to the sidewalk; my hands couldn't decide if they should be at my side, crossed, or swinging as naturally as I could have made them look.
"Well, this is me." I don't know why I said that. We both knew this was my house, he had basically led me here.
He didn't respond. His eyes slowly looked over my face.
"Um thanks for walking me back, it wasn't necessary really. Your dad and I used to sneak drinks all the time. I've sometimes woken up in my bed not remembering how I got back." Nervous laughter escaped my mouth. Why was I incapable of just talking normally to him?
Again he didn't say anything.
He took a step closer.
Konner was only three inches taller than me, but at this moment looking up at him felt like he was a skyscraper.
"Tell your mom and dad I made it back safe please."
He put his thumb underneath my chin and tilted my head up. His red hair brushing my cheek. "What are yo-."
Before I could say another word his lips were on mine. He tasted of vodka and tortilla chips. So that's where the Tito's had gone. It was embarrassing that this eighteen year old could hold his liquor better than someone two times his age. His lips moved slowly on mine which made it seem like the moment lasted for longer than it did. His tongue traced the very outer part of my bottom lip as I slowly exhaled into him. His index finger stroked down my chin until it met his thumb as he slowly pulled away. He was still an inch away from my face, his eyes piercing me.
"Hm." It was more of a low grunt, but nonetheless still waking me up from the blissful moment. Before I could give it another thought he turned on his heels and was walking away.
"Happy...birthday" I uttered. He threw his right hand up in acknowledgement before rounding the corner and walking out of sight
