--------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Professor and Sean, Part 22
I
We were just about to head to the shower when there was a loud knocking at the door. We hurriedly got into our shorts and T-shirts. The knocking was persistent.
"Just a minute! Just a minute!" shouted Sean.
"Come on guys, this is important. Move it. Please," said Rog.
I arrived at the door just before Sean. I opened the door and there stood Rog and Greg dressed in casual clothes.
"What's so damn important that you interrupt the last few minutes we have together before the ceremony," I demanded to know.
"Well, it's like this, lover boy, we're here to take Sean with us. You are not going to see him again until he walks down the aisle with his Aunt Emily, Rog and me. You will have to wait until then to see him," Greg informed both of us while sporting a 'shit-eating' grin.
I started on Rog. "Is this really necessary? I mean; for heaven's sake, he's not the bride. This sounds like Greg. I bet it was his idea. You know, Rog, this doesn't make me very happy. The fact is, I'm pissed," I yelled at Rog. While I was ragging on Rog, Greg has disappeared into the bedroom with Sean.
"Look, Ryan, for heaven's sake, we're not kidnapping him. He's just going to get dressed in another place so that you will have to wait to see him at the ceremony. And the same goes for you. He won't see you until the ceremony. Cool it, for heaven's sake. Relax, smile. This is all to keep tradition alive," Rog told me.
When I looked at Sean he was smiling one of his special smiles and I melted. But I was still a little angry and upset.
"I told you, Ryan, you're not supposed to see me before the ceremony. Bye Hon. See you soon," Sean smiled again, and Greg ushered him out of the room carrying all of his clothes for the ceremony.
I was left there with Rog. I was glaring at him. "I don't know whose idea this was, but I am guessing it was Greg's. Well, let me tell you; I am unhappy about it. I mean, I had planned on being with Sean right up to the minute we walked down the aisle. And now, shit! How could you do this to me?" I asked.
"Ryan, calm down. You will see Sean in about 25-30 minutes. Sean took it well. Look, we all love you, and this was something that someone thought would add to your memories of today. I'm really sorry that it upset you, but you should know right now, Greg did not think this up. Did he think it was a good idea? Yes. Did I think it was a good idea? Yes. If you can just stop for a moment, Ryan, and think; it's really funny and cute. It is nothing to get so steamed up about. We' re all your friends here and we all love you. Can you give me a smile, please, before I leave? Sean seemed happy with it," said Rog.
As I thought about it, I became more amused and remembered Sean's question about seeing each other before the ceremony. I was smiling and finally laughing a little.
"One thing for sure, neither of us will forget this. It will be a nice memory. Sorry, I was such a crap head. Nerves have a lot to do with it," I said apologetically to Rog.
"Good boy, Ryan. Now I need the rings. You finally have taken this for what it is. We have to get ourselves moving if we are going to meet your Mom's 6:30 deadline," said Rog. I handed him the rings as he left the cottage.
I hurried to the bathroom. In the shower, I was laughing a little to myself. I thought, 'I guess I wouldn't see my "bride" before the wedding. I bet Sean loves the whole idea. I bet my Mom came up with this little ruse.' I finished my shower, toweled, touched up my five o'clock shadow with the electric razor, put on aftershave, did the deodorant thing, brushed my teeth, combed my hair, dried it quickly, and used a dash of hairspray. Clean boxers? No, I would wear the black bikini, just for Sean. Black socks, trousers. I was doing well with my mental list. There was heavy knocking at the door again. I was just not in the mood for anymore of Rog and Greg's little pranks. I opened the door and was about to let loose with a long series of complaints. There stood my Mom and Dad.
"Wow, you two make such an elegant couple. Mom, you are absolutely beautiful. That dress is perfect for you. You wore the medallion; thanks, Mom. Dad, you are a ten hunk in that tux. I'm pleased and happy that you are here with me today. I still need to get dressed, but I think I have time to do that and meet your deadline, Mom," I said.
"You're doing fine, Ryan. Don't worry. There's plenty of time," said my smiling Mom.
"I did get a little upset with Rog and Greg. They showed up a bit ago and took Sean away. I thought it must have been Greg's idea, but Rog said definitely not. He did say that both he and Greg approved of the idea. So, that leaves you, Mom. Was it your idea?"
"No, your mother had nothing to do with it. She knows about it because I told her; it was my idea and I didn't want her to be angry when she found out, The fact is, Ryan, that everyone thought it was a good idea. Keeps a tradition alive. It makes the ceremony more exciting. People will have to wait to see both of you; you two will have to wait to see each other. Sean liked the idea; at least that's what Greg said when he called to tell me they had accomplished their mission. So, Ryan, my son, it was my idea. And you, son, are the only one who thought it was a bad idea. I'm sorry I did it." said my humbled Dad.
"It was your idea, Dad?" I asked incredulously.
"Yes, it was. A bad one, I guess, from your point of view. Guess I put a damper on the whole evening," said the sad man.
"No, no. Thank you, Dad, for giving Sean and me something about this ceremony we will never forget about this ceremony. I'm not angry anymore. When it happened, I was upset. I didn't want Sean to leave. I wanted him with me; that's all. He thought it was great; he smiled at me with joy when Greg hauled him out of here. I just had to think about it for a moment to understand the love and good humor that was involved. Look, Dad, I love you. Please believe me, I'm fine about it all," I told him.
"There, Gerry, that puts that little episode to rest. Now, get in there and help your son get dressed for his wedding. I will check you both before we go any further," said Mom.
"Before I finish getting dressed; and while we are alone, I need to discuss something with you two. Sean wants to pay for most of this. He says he's a millionaire and he should pay for everything. I already told him that would not be possible. I told him you were the parents of one of the grooms and that you would want to pay your share. At one point Sean laughed and said if you would consider him the bride, then it would be his responsibility to put on the wedding. I know that this means a great deal to him, so if you can let him pay something, it will make him happy and it will make him feel as if he contributed toward the ceremony," I told them.
"Your Mom and I will discuss it later. Right now, Ryan, you need to finish getting dressed." As he reached to take me by the arm, I saw that he was wearing the ID bracelet. Thank you, Dad, for wearing the bracelet; it makes me happy. I followed him into the bedroom where I finished dressing.
Sean is now the narrator.
I have to admit I was a little astonished by the idea of being taken away from Ryan just before the ceremony. But when Greg got me alone in the bedroom, he told me that it was Dad's idea. He said that Dad wanted us to have some fond memories of the ceremony and he felt this kept alive a tradition. I was pleased with it. When we returned to the living room, I knew in a moment that my gentle Ryan was really angry. Greg was funny; he helped calm my nerves.
"You know, Sean, sometimes Ryan can be an old party poop. He tends to be too serious some of the time. It's hard for him to let his hair down and enjoy. You work on that, Sean. He needs you in many ways," Greg told me.
"Now get in the shower. Rog and I have already taken ours. We can talk later after you are dressed. If you can't find what you need in the bathroom, give a holler," said Greg.
I took a quick shower, dried and then stood before the mirror naked. I checked my beard, or that's what I called the few whiskers that were on my face. A couple of swipes with the razor and that was finished. I used the aftershave and deodorant. My hair was a tight tangle of curls. I towel dried it; but it still needed a little hot air, so I used the hair dryer and my brush. Finally, after a minor struggle, my hair looked okay. I brushed my teeth, afterward clinching them together, along with a big smile so that I could check for food in my front teeth. Satisfied that I was handsome and desirable, I pulled on my black thong. I went into the bedroom where Greg and Rog were dressing.
"Holy shit! Will you look at that?" exclaimed Greg.
"He's a beauty, isn't he?" added Rog. "I think we embarrassed him."
"No, I'm not exactly embarrassed. I just don't think I'm anything special. I'm just a regular guy," I said.
I made up my mind immediately that I would get dressed quickly. I slipped into my trousers, sat on a chair, and pulled on my black socks. I put my feet into the black shoes and tied the laces. Next, I got into the shirt. I didn't know what to do with all the little buttons and stuff. I know I must have look mystified.
Rog wandered over and began to putting the buttons into the tux shirt front and then into the French cuffs. There was a small crisscross tie in white, not black, as I had assumed. Greg and Rog had black ties. Finally it dawned on me, Ryan and I would have the white ties because it was our ceremony. I thanked Rog for his help and then put on the tux jacket. Everything fit me perfectly. I looked at myself in the floor-length mirror. Something was missing. What was it? I finally realized that I didn't have a white rose. I noticed, too, the Greg and Rog had red roses in their lapels. So only Ryan and I were going to have white roses. Okay, I understood that.
While I was thinking about the rose, Greg came in from the living room area with a white rose in his hands. He came to me and pinned it to my lapel. He stepped back, and with Rog, they examined me from head to toe. They made me turn around.
"Wait until Ryan sees you, Sean. You're gonna knock his socks off. You are one handsome dude. Wow!" said Greg.
"I totally agree. He is going to lose it when he sees you. "Wow! is right," said Rog.
It was now almost 6:40. Rog and Greg escorted me to a small private room at the back of the hall where the ceremony was to take place. I caught a glimpse of Stephen Montori, the voice teacher at State. I also noticed Katrina Boshevski at the organ. I wondered what Dr. Montori was doing here. But I had no time to think about it. My Aunt Emily was sitting in the small room waiting. I couldn't believe my eyes. She was radiant; her pink gown was lovely and it fit her so well. Her nosegay was just the right combination of colors so that it contributed to her outfit. She was even wearing a lovely pair of shoes with small heels. They were the same color as her dress.
"Auntie, you look spectacular. You are a beautiful woman," I said as I leaned in and gave her a kiss. I noticed that she was wearing makeup, but more importantly she was wearing her medallion. I also had noticed that Rog and Greg were also wearing their ID bracelets.
"You look lovely, Aunt Emily," said Rog and Greg in unison.
"Thank you, both. And guys, what do you think of this nephew of mine? I think he's wonderful and handsome," she said.
"So do we, Aunt Emily. We can't wait until Ryan sees him. Bet he loses it. I know I would," said Rog.
It was getting close for the starting time of the ceremony. My stomach was doing strange exercises; jumping and swaying and making me feel a little lightheaded. I think Rog notice. He came over to me and put his arm around me.
"Sean, I can see that you are nervous. Remember that everyone out there loves both you and Ryan. You know what you want to say; you rehearsed everything else, so don't worry. Ryan will be standing right beside you, Sean. All you need to do it walk down the aisle with your Aunt and Greg and me. Then we will hand you to Ryan. Try to relax," Rog said. Greg and Auntie Emily smiled at me as they had heard what Rog had to say.
"Okay, I'll try. Never been so nervous in my life. I almost feel like I want to vomit," I said.
"Take some deep, quick breaths, Quickly now, Sean. There's the music. You're second down the aisle. Smile and remember how much all those folks love you. They came a fair distance to be with you. We love you Sean. Make Ryan happy."
I heard the music start and my heart jumped a beat or two.
I knew shortly why Stephen Montori was there. The organ prelude, a Haydn piece, ended. There was only silence. My guts were in knots. Then I heard the piano begin and the melody was familiar. I thought I would lose it, but I struggled because I wanted to be strong for Ryan.
Montori sang:
The story of my life....
----------------------------------------- Ryan returns as narrator.
When I was fully dressed and Mom had put the white rose in my lapel, I noticed two things. My tie was white, while Dad's was black. My rose was white; Dad's was red. Mom and Cathy had been at it again. Mom inspected us and put her seal of approval on us.
"Ryan, you are a handsome man. Sean will probably lose it when he sees you. You have to be strong for him, just like at the hospital," said my Mom.
"Come on now, we have to get going, or we're going to be late," said my Dad.
The three of us left the cottage and started toward the room where the ceremony was to be performed. There wasn't much conversation. My guts were in an uproar, and I was surprised at how nervous I was. I loved him and I was just going to tell all those assembled publicly what I had already told Sean in private. Nevertheless, I was shaky, and to tell the truth, a little scared.
As we arrived at our waiting area, a room at the back of the hall, I saw Rog as he went into the room opposite us. I knew Sean was there. I wanted to be with him. My Mom sensed my nervousness.
"Ryan, listen to your mother. You don't have to worry about anything. You just walk down the aisle with Dad and me. You stand there, Sean walks down the aisle with his aunt, Rog, and Greg. He stands beside you. Father O'Rourke does his thing. You tell Sean you love him, you want him as you partner for life. He tells you the same. The ceremony is over. We party," she said.
"Sure, just as simple as that. Well, I am scared," I said.
"Ryan, those people out there are all friends, and they love you and Sean. They want this to be joyous. It's a wonderful thing that you two are doing, proclaiming your love for each other in public and committing yourself to each other for life. That's so great. Everything will be okay, trust your mother and me," my Dad told me.
The organ prelude ended. Someone opened the door. Mom went out first, I was second, Dad third. We lined up in the back of the hall. Angela Steffano had a basket of rose petals to scatter on the white runner. Sue Beckman held a white pillow on which rested our rings. The piano started and I recognized the melody immediately. I was frozen in my place.
The baritone voice sang strongly:
The story of my life...
Cathy Sorenson is now the narrator.
Janet, Jerrod, Kevin and I had taken our places near the arch. The organ prelude was ending. The room was crowded with people. Most of them I knew, but there were others I didn't recognize. Dr. Cassin and Nick were there from the hospital, as were Tim Shaunnesey and Randy Livingston. Then I noticed Dr. Carl Lewis with his wife, and Dr. Angus Franklin with his wife.
I also was able to pick out Dan Foster who was with Tom Green, and Jeff Miller and Paul Ross. I noticed Ken Chow, but I didn't recognize the man he was with. I saw Anne Milne and smiled at her. Cindy, my secretary was there with Pat Worthes, the Bursar's secretary. I was utterly amazed when I spotted President Williams and his wife near the back; somehow he didn't get the seats we wanted him to have. I spoke to Jerrod who went quickly up the aisle and brought President and Mrs. Williams to the places reserved for them. Finally, just seconds before the music began, I noticed a distinguished lady, impeccably dressed, sitting on the second row in the aisle seat. I wondered who she might be. Father O'Rourke came out and took his place in the archway. The music began. I recognized the melody before Steve began singing. At that moment, I didn't know whether I wanted to kiss Rog or kill him.
The story of my life...
Kevin is now the narrator.
I heard the music start and it brought some happy as well as bitter thoughts to my mind. I smiled at Jerrod, trying to calm him a little, as he was extremely nervous.
I thought to myself: "If I hadn't been such a jerk, this could be Ryan and my commitment service."
All I could think of was how stupid I had been not to recognize how much Ryan had loved me. Like the jerk I was, I just blew it all off. I hadn't wanted a long-term relationship. No, I just wanted to play the field; I wanted to make it with as many guys as I could. At that time, I thought that was what I wanted, what I needed. Well, I was wrong. And I lost him. I could feel tears welling up in my eyes and I knew I had to cool it, for Ryan's sake and for Jerrod.
I saw Ryan and his parents get in place at the rear of the hall. Ryan took my breath away; he was so handsome, so well put together in every way. I looked at Jerrod then, and I remembered it was he that I loved. And I smiled at him and settled in to watch, and be part of the ceremony.
------------------------------- Ryan's Mom is now the narrator.
Well, here it is. The time has finally come and here I am with Dad to escort our only child down the aisle to hand him over to a remarkable young man. I love them both; but I am concerned, as only someone who has lived most of her life can be. There would be some tough times ahead. Arguments, perhaps unfaithfulness, divided career paths, illness. I was worried, too, about all the money Sean was inheriting. Would it become a force that would tear asunder these two special people in my life? I'll do my best to keep things on an even keel, but the truth is, it will be up to Ryan and Sean to keep the relationship going.
I look at Ryan and I know that his heart has been totally captured by Sean. He can't even speak Sean's name and not have his eyes light up and a smile come to his lips. There's the music, it's time to give my son away. I squeezed his arm as I took it and I hoped it said without my saying it: 'I love you, Ryan my son, and this is the right thing that you are doing.'
------------------------------ Ryan's Dad is now the narrator,
Never thought I would be walking down the aisle with my son on my arm to give him away to another man. I'm an older man and I don't understand all the social and political implications of this union. What I do know is that these two guys love each other more than many of the married couples I have met over my lifetime. What they care about most is the other's happiness. Look at Ryan at the hospital. I knew he would gladly give up his life to save Sean. That, by God, is love! I'm glad that I am a part of this union today. These two are both my sons now; doing what they feel they need to do. I support that. It is right. There's the music. Time to start down the aisle. I take my son's arm and I squeeze it very hard. Ryan turns to look at me. I mouthed to him: "My son, I love you and I wish you only happiness and joy."
Jerrod is now the narrator.
No, no! I won't look at him. I can't look at him. It's too much. When Sean comes down the aisle, I know I will want to run to him and take him away. He should be mine. I fell in love with him the first day we arrived on campus. But did I do anything about it? No, of course not; I was too damned scared about being called a fag. I was too worried about what everyone would think about a jock fag. So, I let him go.
I'm happy with Kevin. I love him very much. I want to be with him; but truthfully, it doesn't have the same feeling as my first love for Sean. It's great and I want to keep it. Maybe it was just because he was the first guy I fell head over heels for. I'll have a difficult time in the receiving line when I get to Sean. I will have to control myself. Kevin will not understand how I feel. Or maybe he feels the same way about Ryan. I could never, would never ask him that.
Look at Ryan. What a hunk! Sean, my boy, you are a lucky guy. Just keep him, love him, be always with him in the fun times and the difficult times. God, I love both of you guys. No tears, you asshole. No tears!
---------------------------------- Ryan returns as narrator.
When my Mom grabbed my arm she took it with force; it was a reassurance that this was the right thing to be doing. Her confirmation of it was heartening. My Dad took my arm at almost the same moment and he squeezed it so hard, I turned and looked at him. I saw him mouth: "My son, I love you and I wish you only joy and happiness." I almost lost it right then; but he smiled at me, reminding me of our long years as father and son. I knew he was proud of me and that made everything fine.
I did notice that my legs felt a bit like rubber. The first few steps were difficult, but my Mom leaned in and whispered in my ear: "Ryan, remember it will all be over in just a few minutes." I calmed myself, and with their support, made my way down the aisle. I was amazed at the number of people who were here to witness this union. I smiled, hoping it wouldn't look look faked. I really meant it, but my mouth was dry. I was shaking a little, and I hoped I could get to the arch and just stand. The music was really getting to me, too.
The story of my life
Begins and ends with you...
'God', I prayed, 'please help me get through this. I want to be strong for Sean. Help me, please.' I felt calmer, more in control as we approached the archway.
You are the story of my life
And every word is true
Each chapter sings your name
Each page begins with you.
I noticed the music grow softer, and the singer stopped singing. Father O'Rourke's voice, strong and without waver, asked:
"Who brings this young man to become a soul mate and partner?"
"His mother and I do." I heard my Dad say. Mom kissed me, and so did Dad. They retired to their place. I turned and looked to the back of the hall. No one was yet there. The music started again, and the singer again was singing those words that meant so much to Sean and me.
I was alone; you found me waiting:
And then I saw him. My god, he was beautiful, and that smile. He was happy. I was happy. He and his Aunt Emily started down the aisle with Rog and Greg. I was close to losing it - how did I deserve this wonderful man. I love him so much.
You made me you own.
I was afraid that somehow I never could be
The man that you wanted of me.
Sean and his aunt and Rog and Greg were closer now. A tear ran down my cheek and it took all my will power to stop any others from flowing down my face.
Stay with me here
Share with me care with me,
Stay and be near....
They were at the second row. Suddenly Sean stopped. He turned and walked to a lady standing in the row. He took her into his arms and hugged her deeply. I could see the tears in his eyes. It had to be Grace Foster, his senior English teacher. She gave him a quick kiss on the cheek and whispered something to him and he returned to his march down the aisle.
The story of my life.
It's so very plain to read,
It starts the day you came
And ends the you leave.
Father O'Rourke asked again this time of Sean: "Who brings this young man to become a soul mate and partner?"
In a sweet, but strong voice, Aunt Emily said, "I do, his aunt and only living relative bring this handsome, intelligent man here to start his new life."
Sean moved up next to me. He was there with me, smiling through his tears, but full of joy and happiness at our union.
II
Father O'Rourke raised him hand and spoke:
"My friends. We are gathered here today to witness the exchange of vows between two men who love each other intensely. They have decided that they want to spend the rest of the lives together sharing that love.
"You, Mr. and Mrs. Taylor, should be proud of your son, Ryan. He has demonstrated the courage to follow his heart. And you Mrs. Kelly, must be fully as proud of your nephew, Sean. He, too, has selected his way, unafraid of what others might say and feel.
"Ryan and Sean, thank you for including me in your commitment ceremony. I am here representing a loving God who will take you to His bosom as He takes all of us, loving us for who we are, asking that we, too, love Him. I also represent the State of Vermont as a legitimate member of the clergy and therefore qualified to preside at this ceremony.
"It is obvious to me that you two young men are loved by a very large number of people. Look about you at all those who have come to bear witness to your vows.
"I will ask you now to begin your vows. Sean, as you are younger, you will go first. When it is time for the ring for Ryan, please stop so that Jerrod can get the ring for you to put on Ryan's finger. Likewise, Ryan, when it is your turn, please stop, so that Kevin can get the ring for you to put on Sean's finger. I would also like you to turn and face the quests, here as witnesses, as you say your vows.
During the saying of your vows, Katrina Boshevski will be playing Chopin's 'Fantaisie-Impromtu in C sharp minor, Op. 66'. Now Sean, you may begin.
I looked at Sean, and as usual, his smile melted my heart. He was so perfect. 'Now,' I told myself, 'keep it together. Don't fall apart.' Sean turned to me and said:
"My Ryan, I love you as deeply as the soul is able to love. You are the mainstay of my life. In you I find love, courage, caring, intelligence and faithfulness. You have already shown me the depth of your love for me. You have shown your courage in loving me when many said it was folly. When I was hurt, you came to protect me, to bring me back. You have been with me already in good times and in bad times. I want to spend the rest of my life with you, Ryan. I want to laugh with you, cry with you, learn with you, love with you. I make this vow, Ryan, before our family and many friends gathered here, and in God's sight."
Sean stopped and waited for Jerrod to bring the ring. Jerrod had tears in his eyes, and when Sean saw that, I saw the glistening of tears in his beautiful eyes. He continued in a voice filled with love, broken at times by emotion, close to crying, but in control:
"Accept this ring as a symbol of my love and vow, Ryan Taylor. I will be your husband, partner and friend forever. I will love you and cherish you. I will care for you in illness. I will protect you from harm as best I can, and I will put your happiness above all others including my own. All these things I pledge to do until death separates us. I swear this before God and the community here." He slipped the ring on my finger and then bent and kissed the ring.
Sean was now openly shedding tears, and my heart was full. I fought hard to keep my emotions in check. 'Please, dear God,' I prayed, 'help me get through this so that I will not dissolve into tears.'
"Now, Ryan, it is your turn to say your vows," Father O'Rourke said to me.
I looked at Sean hoping that my eyes showed him the depth of my love. Holding his hand as he had held mine, I faced him and said my vow, knowing that my voice was ragged and full of emotion. Sean's tears had not stopped, and I was fighting mine, but I said:
"Sean Kelly, you are the love of my life. When I was lonely and almost in despair, you appeared as a miracle. You accepted me for what I was, expecting nothing, and giving everything. You almost gave the ultimate measure of your love when you were beaten and left for dead because you dared to love me. I needed to help you, and in my agony over your beating, I took courage from my memory of your love, and I asked you to return to me, to love me forever. You did this, Sean; through the gathering of all your strength, you fought the darkness and you won; you came back to me, making me the happiest man on the face of the earth. From you, my beloved, I have learned the real meaning of courage. You have laughed with me and cried with me. You have accepted my Mother and Father as your own, and they, because they see your total love for me, have taken you as their son. I believe I was blessed when I met you; and I am more blessed that you have decided to spend the rest of your days with me. I make this vow, Sean, before our family and many friends gathered here, and in God's sight."
The tears were flowing freely now from my eyes. Sean was holding together, but I was aware that it wouldn't be long before he broke down. Kevin came forward with the ring. I was surprised to see the tears in his eyes; not the thing I would expect from Kevin. He handed me the ring. I took a deep breath and continued:
"Accept this ring as a symbol my love and vow, Sean Kelly. I will be your husband, partner and friend forever. I will love you and cherish you. I will care for you in illness. I will protect you from harm as best I can, and I will put your happiness above all others including my own. All these things I pledge to do until death separates us. I swear this before God and the community here." I slipped the ring on Sean's finger and then bent and kissed it.
We were now both weeping freely. We held each other's hands and stood there looking with love at our lover's tear stained face. I wanted to grab Sean and kiss him, but I would have to wait.
Father O'Rourke spoke, "As you two have spoken your vows and have exchanged rings, it is my pleasure to inform you that you are now partners in a civil union in the eyes of the State of Vermont. But I wish to add this: I also want to bless this union, as I know that Almighty God cannot be displeased with the love we have heard and seen here this evening. So, I bless you, Ryan and Sean, and ask Almighty God and His son, Jesus, to keep you safe from harm and to smile on your union."
Sean was now smiling his wonderful smile at me, and my tears were flowing as were his. He was so beautiful. He was my partner and lover. How wonderful this day had become!
Father O'Rourke continued: "Sean, I hope that you have been teaching Ryan all about this kissing business. All of us here would enjoy seeing how successful you have been. So, Ryan, kiss you partner."
I took Sean into my arms and I kissed him with a feeling and intensity that I had never known before. I could tell from his reaction that he, too, felt something more than we had experienced in the past. There was a security, a completeness about it. We were lost in our embrace, unaware of the thunderous applause that was engulfing the hall. We broke our embrace and immediately started to blush.
Father O'Rourke then told the assembled family and friends,
"I would like to present to you, this devoted and loving couple, legally a civil union, Ryan Taylor and Sean Kelly."
As we started up the aisle, Steve Montori began to sing another song with meaning to both of us:
Sweet wonderful you,
You make me happy with the things you do,
Oh, can it be so,
This feeling follows me wherever I go.
I never did believe in miracles,
But I've a feeling it's time to try.
I never did believe in the ways of magic,
But I'm beginning to wonder why.
Don't, don't break the spell,
It would be different and you know it will,
You, you make loving fun,
And I don't have to tell you you're the only one.
You make loving fun.
You make loving fun.
We hurried up the aisle, stopping only to kiss Mom and Dad and Aunt Emily. We rushed into one of the small rooms where we had waited. I locked the door immediately. Sean flew into my arms and we kissing each other with total abandon. I finally pulled away just enough to tell Sean.
"My husband, how I love you. And you are my husband, my partner and my lover. I am so lucky, Sean." I drew him to me again and we kissed until we were breathless.
"Ryan, my husband. How I love the sound of that. My husband, my friend, my lover, my partner. I am so happy I could cry. Kiss me again, Lover. Please," asked Sean
I needed no other requests and he was in my arms again. I pulled away again, and started to laugh.
"What's so funny, Hon?" asked Sean.
"If we don't stop this hot kissing, I'm just about ready to tear off your clothes and take you for the first time as my legal husband," I told Sean along with my laughter.
"Hey, husband, I am yours. I would love it," said Sean.
"We have to go out and meet the wonderful people who came here tonight to witness this. What a grand time; so well planned, such a happy occasion. We have to do our duty. But, Baby, later tonight, we will start our torrid hornymoon," I told Sean.
"We had better, Hon. I have a huge horn for you right now. I have to let it go down some before we go out there," he said.
"Me, too, Baby. I am just about there. Just don't kiss me again, at least not the way we have been kissing. I'm ready, are you?" I asked.
"Lead on, Lover. I am ready."
I opened the door and there stood my folks, Aunt Emily and Cathy and Janet.
"You two come with us," ordered my Mom. We followed her out of the hall as people were still moving out and to the other room where the reception was to take place.
"Now, you two guys, stay in this room until I come and get you; and no funny business. That can wait until later tonight," said my Dad. Cathy, Janet, my Mom, and Aunt Emily all smiled at us. Sean blushed; and I was blushing, too.
Sean and I looked at each other and started to laugh. "I can't believe my Dad said that to us, especially in front of the women. He's getting a little spirited for a man his age, don't you think, Sean?" I asked.
"I hope you take after him and are just as spirited and sexy as he is at that age. He's a great guy. Can you imagine the two of us when we get to their age. I know one thing, Ryan. I will love you just as much then as I do now. I imagine the sex will have quieted down a little; not too much, I hope. Maybe we will have to be happy with three or four times a day," Sean laughed.
"Why are they hiding us in here? I can't imagine what they are up to. Can you?" I asked.
"Can't help you, Hon. I've never been to a wedding before. Have you?" asked Sean.
"Yeah, a few. Maybe they are waiting until everyone is seated and then they will introduce the people who took part in the ceremony. That's all I can think of," I told Sean.
"Hmm, you are a professor of English, right?" he asked.
"Yes, why?"
"Didn't you end that sentence with a preposition, my dear husband?" he ribbed me.
"Sometimes, my dear husband, it is okay to end a sentence with a preposition. Which sounds better to you: 'This is something with which I will not put.' or 'This is something I will not put up with.' Come on, which one?"
"Now the professor is pissed at little me, the student. The student knows how to make the professor forget all about prepositions and his wise-ass student. Here's how it works. Come here, professor," Sean requested.
I moved to him. He smiled that smile at me. He reached out to me and pulled me to him. He kissed me with a soft, open mouth and much tongue. My cock started to rise immediately. I was really getting into it, when there was a knock at the door.
"Just a moment, please. We are checking our hair and stuff." called out Sean. Then in a whisper, he jockingly said, "Got to let my cock go down a little. Does the professor feel better now?" whispered a joking Sean.
"Yeah, the professor is fine and happy. He plans to give the student something he won't forget later tonight. You can bet your ass on it," I said with a chuckle.
"I am betting my ass on it; and the professor had better come through, or else I get his ass. I bet I get his ass anyway." said Sean with a laugh. Our little exchange was broken up with my father's slightly irritated voice: "Come on you two; for crying out loud. That stuff can wait, can't it?"
I opened the door and we both smiled broadly at my Dad. He just kissed us both quickly on the lips and told us to follow him. Before us was a line of people. Sue Beckman, Angela Stefanno, Kevin and Jerrod, Rog and Greg, Cathy and Janet, Aunt Emily, Mom and Dad, and then the two of us. I whispered to Sean that I felt like the caboose on a train. He started giggling, but he stopped quickly as his Aunt Emily gave him a look that said, 'Knock it off, already. Smile, but be quiet.' He looked at me, smiled a moment, and gave me a quick kiss. I was so happy. This was more than I deserved. This was real happiness, real joy.
We were surprised to hear the voice of Jeff Miller, one of Greg's friends acting as master of ceremonies.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, I would like to introduce the members of the party, hell, the wedding party. First, Sue Beckman and Angela Stefanno, ring bearer and flower girl." They walked into the hall and there was applause.
"Next, Kevin Reading and Jerrod Williamson who stood up for Ryan and Sean." In they went to more applause.
Next, Cathy Sorenson and Janet Creigh, who were the ladies in waiting, and special friends of Ryan and Sean's. Again applause.
"Now, two of my best buddies and supporters of the entire affair, and they walked Sean down the aisle with his aunt, Roger Fillimore and Greg Raymond." Very strong applause followed their introduction.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, it is now my honor to introduce to you, Sean's Aunt Emily." As she entered the room, there was heavier applause, and Rog came forward to escort her to her place in the receiving line..
"The next two probably don't' need an introduction, but I have a couple of things I want to say about them. They are very special human beings. They love without exception; they are not biased or opinionated; they organized, with the assistance of Rog, Greg, and Cathy, the total renovation and reconstruction of Ryan and Sean's home after it was destroyed by angry young men. They labored hours, without rest, not wishing any special credit for what they had done. And now, they are principally responsible for what is happening tonight with the assistance of Cathy Sorenson and Roger Fillimore. They loved these two young men completely and welcomed Sean into their family. They are remarkable people and it is an honor that I have known them. Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome Mr. and Mrs. Gerard Taylor, Mom and Dad." The applause was thunderous. I had tears in my eyes and I noticed that Sean did, also. Well, we were next; what would Jeff have to say about us.
"Now, ladies and gentlemen, our special guests. I need to say a few things about them. They are both selfless lovers. They exist to make their partner happy and fulfilled. They do not falter. When a terrible incident almost took Sean away, it was Ryan, who, through his love and his faith, was able to call Sean back from the brink. I believe that only true love is able to do that. I think they are remarkable individuals and what an amazing couple they make. One of the best things that has happened to me and my lover, Paul, was meeting these two men. And I kid you not, they are men. Here, ladies and gentlemen, are the people we came here to honor. It is my extreme pleasure to introduce to you, the happily married couple, Ryan Taylor and Sean Kelly." As we entered the room, the people rose as one applauding; and yelling and wishing us the best of luck. We were overcome to see so much love flowing to us from so many people of so many different persuasions. I guess what they recognized was love. And that old saying has some significant truth in it: 'Love conquers all!"
Sean was blushing like a virgin bride, and I was beaming like the knowing groom who had plans to change all that on the honeymoon, or in our situation, hornymoon. We were directed to the head of the receiving line. Jeff announced that people should start at the head of the line, namely Emily, then Mom and Dad, then us, and then the rest of the wedding party. I whispered to Sean, "This may be difficult. I will try to introduce you to anyone you might not know. Be polite, Baby, but don't talk too long. I want this whole thing to get over so I can have you alone and to myself."
Sean smiled and grasped my hand even tighter. He leaned to me and kissed the side of my face and whispered to me, " Ry, I want out of here, too. I want you, Husband. But I want you alone and all to myself."
"Hello, Dr. and Mrs. Williams. This is my husband, Sean. Sean this is Dr. Williams and Mrs. Williams; he is the President of State."
"Thank you so much for honoring us with your presence here tonight. Ryan has told me about your deep concern and ever-present kindness while I was recuperating in the hospital. I know that we will never be able to thank you in a proper way," said my smiling, wonderful Sean.
Dr. Williams smiled broadly at Sean. "Sean, my wife thinks you are just about the cat's pajamas. It's not a small thing to impress my wife like that. And, Sean, you are so articulate and comfortable. I am really impressed. You know that I have been impressed with your husband, Ryan, for a number of years. I am happy that you will both be staying with us at State.
"Mrs. Williams, you look lovely this evening. May I give you a kiss in welcome to our commitment ceremony?" Mrs. Williams blushed and allowed Sean to kiss her softly on the lips. Dr. Williams looked on with a great smile on his face. They moved on down the line.
"Sean, you were magnificent. Dr. Williams was really impressed. Hell, so was I. I love you more each moment I am with you. You continually surprise me, Sean. Kiss me right now." And he did, and the hall broke into wild applause.
The quests moved slowly through the line. There were so many and so many had to be thanked. We freely kissed everyone, including our gay friends. No one seemed to notice nor to care. We had been through about half the guests when I saw whom I knew had to be Grace Foster, Sean's English teacher. I squeezed Sean's hand and whispered to him: "Someone very important in your life is about to get to us. Are you ready?"
"Ry, I may need your support. This will be very emotional. I gave her a kiss on the way down the aisle, but I didn't have to speak. She just said she was happy for me and told me to go on to my new husband."
I started to speak. "Hello, I am Ryan Taylor. I believe you must be Mrs. Foster. Before you speak to Sean, I want to thank you from the bottom of a grateful heart for your kindness in a terrible moment of crisis. You saved Sean and he was able to attend State and meet me. I treasure Sean in a way I cannot express. Thank you, Mrs. Foster, for seeing his worth and saving him with your caring and kindness." I pulled Mrs. Foster into my arms and give her a warm kiss.
"I know enough about you, Ryan, to know that Sean is safe and cared for and that your love will keep him buoyed and fulfilled for his lifetime. He needed to find you, and thank God, he did. He is such a wonderful, caring, talented and intelligent young man. He so deserves the happiness that you have helped him to get. Thank you, Ryan. Thank you."
I saw the tears flowing freely from Sean's eyes. Mine began to tear up, too. Sean simply took Mrs. Foster into his arms and tried to thank her, but he just cried like someone who had found a long-lost friend. Mrs. Foster patted Sean's back, but did not try to pull away. The line had stopped and the room had suddenly grown quiet. All had their eyes on Sean and Grace Foster. When Grace Foster finally pulled herself away from Sean, it was evident that she was crying, too. I wondered if Sean would be able to speak. I should have known he could, and that he would want to.
"Mrs. Foster, I will never be able to thank you for what you did for me. You gave me a chance to make a life for myself. If you had not helped me when you did, I would be dead now. You know it, and Ryan and I know it; but most of the folks here do not know about your unbelievable kindness to me. I really love you, Mrs. Foster, for being aware of me, and caring for me. You were like a mother to me, when I needed that most. Thank you again, Mrs. Foster. I want you to know this. We plan to establish a Grace Foster Scholarship Program at our old school. I want it used to help needy kids in anyway they need help. I want them to have nice clothes, and go to dances and movies and do all the things kids that age want and do. And, Mrs. Foster, I want you to control the funds and decide who will get money for whatever. I will begin the fund with a gift of $50,000. If that runs out too soon, there will be more. I will continue to invest in the fund, but only as long as it remains the Grace Foster Scholarship Program. Mrs. Foster, this is a small payment on my life. God Bless You!" Everyone had been listening and the room burst into wild applause. He had done it again. My Sean, my wonderful, thoughtful, kind, loving, husband. Grace Foster was really crying now, holding on to Sean for support. She just kept saying, "Thank you, Sean, Thank you, Sean, Thank you, Sean."
Shortly after that emotional moment, the line began to move again. From the far end came Sue and Angela, smiling and happy. Kissing them was a treat; for them and for Sean and me. Next came Cathy and Janet. How they hugged and kissed us, no cheek kisses this time. These were major kisses on the lips. Cathy told me, "Ryan, I just regret that Janet and I didn't have the sense to do what you two have done tonight. God, it was beautiful and moving. Enjoy your honeymoon and your time together." She moved on with Janet.
I was concerned about Kevin and Jerrod. How would they react to us? Would they be filled with joy, or would both of them, show regret that they had not been lucky enough to have us.
Kevin stood facing me. My God, he had tears in his eyes, and right behind him was Jerrod who had tears streaming down his face. What was going on? I reached and and pulled Kevin into my arms. He whispered to me, "Ryan, I could be standing here with you today if I hadn't been so stupid. But you two are at the top of my list. I hope that Jerrod and I can be like you two. God Bless both of you. He moved on to Sean and grabbed him and gave him a major Kevin Reading kiss. Jerrod just stood with me and cried. I took him into my arms and kissed him on the lips. He didn't stop crying. When Jerrod got to Sean, the dam broke and Jerrod was sobbing. Sean soon joined him. Kevin moved back to them, then I moved to them. Neither of them could speak. Finally, Jerrod put an amazing kiss on Sean's lips. With Kevin helping to support him, the two of them walked away.
Next came Rog and Greg. Old Greg had huge tears in his eyes, and he clasped onto Sean like he was going to crush him. He planted a man-sized kiss on Sean's lips, and Sean, in gratitude and love, returned Greg's kiss completely. Rog moved to Sean. I wondered what would happen here. Not to worry, Rog just grabbed Sean and kissed him deeply and long. Rog was crying softly and as I was released from Greg's smothering kiss, I saw the tears flowing down Sean's face. Then Rog was with me. He was crying freely now, as was Greg. Rog just grabbed me and kissed me fiercely and with great feeling. I was almost sobbing, as was Sean. These two guys, these two wonderful human beings, had touched our hearts in ways we could never count. I think they were a part of God's legion of angels. For surely, they had been Sean and my angels.
I knew it would get worse before it got better. Emily moved to our Mom and Dad, kissing and hugging them both. Then she stood before me. "I want you to know, Ryan Taylor, that I love you as much as I do that nephew of mine. I am an old lady, but I know love when I see it. I know, Sean, has found love which he deeply needed. I failed him because of my sorrow and my refusal to let him in to help me with it. I almost sent him to his death. I have much to regret. But one thing I can say to you, Ryan, is that I will not worry about him now. He is in your care. I know you love him, and that you will keep him safe. That is all I care about." She gave me a great hug and a kiss on the lips and moved on to Sean who was already an emotional wreck. I turned to my folks and they knew I was needed by Sean who was now sobbing almost uncontrollably as he hugged his Aunt Emily. She had finally broken down, and she was crying, too. I went to Sean, and kissed him gently on the head. I told him I was there. I told him it was okay to weep. He just couldn't stop. There was a lot of nose blowing and eye wiping going on among the guests. I was weeping again, too. It was Aunt Emily who finally took care of the situation. "You listen to me, Sean Kelly; you have no need to cry. This should be the happiest day of your life, young man. Ryan is such a wonderful man. Sean, he loves you so much. He loves you enough to make up for two lifetimes without love. Now, come on, toughen up, stop the crying, and give that husband of yours a real kiss, a Kelly kiss." Amazingly Sean was no longer weeping. He first kissed his Aunt Emily, and then he took me into his arms and gave me my first Kelly kiss.
I made note that I wanted more of those.
Then we faced Mom and Dad. This was going to be a difficult one. They were already crying, tears slipping slowly down their cheeks. I couldn't take it. I burst into tears, and reached for them.
Sean was right there, too; hugging and crying. No one could stop. No one could speak. At last it was my Dad who brought us back to some type of sanity. "Look," he said, "only God knows how much Mom and I love both of you. We only wish you love and happiness in your life together at the same level that we have enjoyed. Now a family hug, a couple of kisses, and let's eat." The listening crowd applauded.
Someone lead us to the head table and to the two center seats. Everyone was still applauding. Sean was smiling widely enjoying all the joy that filled the room. I leaned into him and kissed him lightly on the lips. The crowd went crazy. Spoons were being struck against glasses. I know we both looked bewildered until my Mom, who was sitting next to me, leaned to me and whispered, "They want you two to kiss, and they don't mean little pecks."
I told Sean what it was all about. He grabbed me and put me in a lip lock of immense proportions.
Another Kelly kiss. The crowd loved it We broke our embrace and sat down. The others stayed standing. Rog called for some quiet. Then he started to speak.
"What a wonderful pleasure it is for me to be selected to give the first toast of the evening. Ryan has been my friend and colleague for six years. He is intelligent, caring, and a first-class friend to Greg and me.
"The one thing about Ryan that bothered both Greg and me was that he didn't seem to have a soul mate. He was alone and adrift in the world. His energies all seemed directed toward the academic, but it did not fill the huge void in his life. "
"Along came Sean. Sean, my friends, makes each day bright and happy. He is loving, funny, talented, perhaps the most accomplished pianist I have worked with in all my years at State. And the miracle was that these two unlikely souls met at Walgreens and fell instantly in love. Truth be known, Sean had fallen for Ryan a few weeks before.
"Well, let me tell you, Ryan Taylor changed overnight. No more sad looks, no more moping around. Now he was all smiles, happy, fun to talk with. And the cause? Love, folks. Love. He was hopelessly, completely, totally in love with Sean. And Sean, wonderful courageous Sean, he loved Ryan back in numbers. I can't think of any two people of any sexual persuasion who ever demonstrated any more pure love than these two.
"They are a remarkable couple. It is my wish that you join me in this toast. Please raise your champagne glasses: To you, Ryan and Sean, the happy couple, we collectively wish you a long and joyous life together, with your love only growing through the years. May it be God's wish that you both enjoy health, longevity, and a life together filled with all the joys and wonders of this world. You, my friends, deserve this and even more. Cheers!"
The room was filled with a happy, loud, joyous chorus of "Cheers!" Sean and I were blushing appropriately. I decided to save some glassware and kissed Sean firmly on the lips. The crowd exploded in applause. Rog clinked his glass.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, it is my pleasure to introduce Mr. Gerard Taylor, Ryan's father. who will make the next toast."
My Dad rose to his feet amidst the applause. He surveyed the crowd silently. The room quieted. "My dear friends, my wife and I have supported our wonderful son, Ryan, for all of his life. We didn't stop loving him when he told us he was gay. All I told him was to find someone who would love him as I knew he would love them. And then the phone calls, the emails, the long letters began. We began to find out about Sean. From what Ryan told us he was perfect. We laughed about that. I told my wife, no one is perfect. But the mail kept coming, the phone calls, the joy now present in everything Ryan did or said. His Mom was wiser than I about it all. She told me he was in love, deeply in love. And then we got that terrible call from Rog.
"We flew to State on the first available flight. We met Sean for the first time under very difficult circumstances. We saw our son struggle with sorrow and fear. He was so in love that it is impossible to speak about it in words that would convey the intensity of his love for Sean. And when we met Sean, the darndest thing happened: Ellen and I fell in love with Sean, too. He became our son. He called us Mom and Dad from our first meeting. I sighed a big sigh that day. Ryan had found the right life mate. So Ellen and I want our two sons to know this: you two, Ryan and Sean, have demonstrated to those of us in this room what real love can do. It can change the course of events, make life happier, bring joy into lives that need a little lightening. You did that for Mom and me, Ryan and Sean. You made life again exciting, worthwhile, engaging. We will be eternally grateful to you both. For you two, our family now, may you continue to grow in love, and may God keep you safe and happy; that is our sincerest prayer and wish. Cheers!"
More applause, more kissing, more laughter. 'God is good,' I thought. 'He brought me Sean, almost took him away, but relented, I guess, and gave him back to me. I would never let Sean down; I would love him forever. Thank you, dear Lord. Thank you.' Sean poked me in the arm.
"Hon, have you seen this menu. My God, it is so fancy. I bet Mom had a lot to do with that."
"No, haven't seen it. I read the menu that was at my place.

I leaned to my mother and whispered a silly question. "Mom, how is everyone going to order? This will take hours to do."
"Don't worry, Ryan, everyone selected their meal when they returned their invitations. Everyone is all set. Well, almost everyone, you and Sean have to decide what you want, Dear."
I looked bewildered. Sean looked at me, smiled and then asked me with much concern in his voice. "Husband, what is the matter? You look worried."
"No, it isn't important. We have to decide what we want for dinner. That's all."
"I want red meat, lots of it. I need the protein and the strength it will give me. Maybe a couple of those steaks would do it for me, Hon," Sean said with a laugh.
"You little wise-ass," I whispered to Sean, "if you don't stop rubbing my leg, I will have to throw you on the table and take you right here in front of our parents and friends."
Sean was laughing quite a bit now. "Ryan, Hon, it's just that when I am around you all I can think about is meat. Forgive me, Husband."
I couldn't help it. I burst into uncontrollable laughter. My Mom gave me a very stern look, and I almost choked to death trying to stop laughing. Sean made it worse, as he now had his hand on my hard cock. My God, I wanted him so much. He just smiled and winked at me.
In an attempt to get myself under control, I told Sean, "I'm having the Onion Soup and the Lobster. What do you want to eat?" It hadn't even gotten out of my mouth when I knew I had made a terrible mistake.
"Hmmmm, let me see. What do I want to eat? Ry, can't you guess what I want. You know what I love. Can I get it here?" asked a smiling Sean.
"Sean, Dear, is there something you want that isn't on the menu. I am sure that I could talk with the chef and he could take care of it for you," my Mom said.
Sean's face got immediately red, and he stammered his reply, "No, no, it's okay, Mom. I'm having the onion soup and the Filet Mignon. I'm all set, thank you." I was having a terrible time now, about to explode into laughter.
"Well, Sean, Lover," I whispered to him, "Mom got you, didn't she? I loved it." There was the clinking of silver against crystal. I leaned to Sean and kissed him. The clinking continued. I pulled Sean to his feet and really laid a kiss on him that brought the house to its feet, the applause drowning out what I whispered into Sean's ear as I broke the kiss, " Baby, I am so going to fuck you later. that you won't be able to sit down for a week."
Sean just smiled at me and whispered back to me. "We'll see, my horny husband. It had better be the best fuck I ever had."
We sat down, gave our order to a cute blond waitress, and chatted with the folks on either side of us. I couldn't help myself; I put my hand on Sean's thigh and slowly moved it up to his crotch, where I rubbed his swelling cock. He just smiled knowingly at me. This reception was going to be long and painful for us. We wanted, as they say, to consummate our marriage. But, as my Dad would say, "That stuff can wait."
The appetizers arrived, and the meal began.
What the waitress didn't know was that I already had my appetizer and was anxiously awaiting my meal.
