Chapter 1
Adam was breathing hard as he came around the corner, turning onto the street his house was on. He had just finished an hour long jog; his body was covered in a slick sheen of sweat. He pulled off his shirt and slowed to a walk, wiping the sweat out of his forest green eyes.
His hair was a tangled mess of shaggy brown; it was nearing time to get it cut. He threw his shirt over his shoulder and stopped to check the mail before going inside. One of his neighbors, Denise Hartman, was busy tending to her garden across the street. She waved politely at him and gave a half-hearted smile.
Adam waved back and then went inside to get a glass of water. As usual, his chocolate lab Remington was there to greet him. His tail was thumping loudly against the wall as he failed to contain his excitement.
"Relax buddy! I've only been gone for an hour," Adam said, patting him on the head.
Remington seemed to think Adam had been gone for years, the way he was spinning around in ciricles. Adam chugged the glass of water in two gulps and after a quick whiff of his armpits, decided it was shower time.
He lived alone; it was a small two bedroom house, more than enough space for him and Remington. He grabbed Remington's bone and told him to go chew on it while he showered. Dutifully, Remington gave a few tail wags in acknowledgment and trotted over to his favorite spot in the house, promptly flopping down and gnawing on his bone.
Adam stripped off his running shorts, socks and shoes and turned on the water. He casually glanced at himself in the mirror, admiring his body, which he worked hard to maintain. As soon as the water was hot enough, he climbed into the shower, enjoying the relaxation hot water induced.
Once he was thoroughly clean, Adam wrapped a towel around his waist and went to his bedroom to get dressed for the day. It was almost 8am, he had to be at work at 9, so he still had plenty of time.
Just as he entered his room, the doorbell rang, which caused Remington to start barking like a ferocious beast.
Adam quieted him, and then went to answer his door. He made a quick glance out the window to see who it was. Greg, his next door neighbor, stood there on his porch, a packet of papers in his hands.
Adam opened the door, "Morning Greg, what can I do for you?" he asked.
"Well, it seems I've gotten some of your mail by accident, here," he handed Adam the letters.
"Thank you, I appreciate the delivery," Adam shook his hand and shut the door, not wanting to make any small talk just now.
He quickly thumbed through the letters, hoping to find the one he had been waiting for. Unfortunately, no such luck, just bills and more bills. He set the letters down on the counter and returned to his room, still wearing the towel around his waist.
He dressed in a nice suit, appropriate for his job. He was the Head of Security for a wealthy business man, who happened to be his brother, Joshua. He grabbed his 1911 .45 from his nightstand and holstered it on his right hip, along with two spare magazines.
He didn't expect trouble, but with as many business deals as his brother did, and the amount of cash kept around, it was too risky to not have security. He glanced at the clock, 8:30, he needed to be out the door in a matter of minutes.
He checked to make sure Remington had adequate water and food, and then went to the garage. His Jeep was parked inside, along with a small fishing boat and various outdoor gear hung all along the walls. He tried as often as possible to get out and camp, fish, hunt, hike, all things which Remington highly approved of.
The drive to work was a short one, but he liked to get there early, check things out before his brother arrived. The building was a sky scraper, full of offices, cubicles and employees. There was an underground parking garage and a valet service provided to all employees.
He turned over his key to the young woman who was manning the valet booth this morning and walked inside. Ben and George were running the metal detectors, every employee who wasn't security was required to pass through them on a daily basis.
Adam displayed his badge to the computer scanner and was immediately let into a side office, next to the scanners. Another security agent was sitting behind a desk, monitoring a vast array of security cameras.
"All quiet this morning boss," the man said.
"Good, is my Brother in yet?" Adam asked.
"No, but his wife is waiting upstairs, she wants to talk to you, said it was urgent," he reported.
"Thanks," he said, pulling his cell phone out of his pocket. He saw he had nine missed calls, all from Janice, his brother's wife. He hadn't even heard the phone ring.
He took the private elevator to the top floor, it was much faster than the public elevator. As he came through the door, his assistant, James, handed him the night report.
"Nothing unusual, one of the motion detectors on the fifth floor is malfunctioning. The technician will be here at 1pm to fix it," James said.
"What about Janice? Any idea what she wants?" Adam asked, curious.
"I don't know, she wouldn't say, but I can tell she has been crying," James sounded sure.
Adam was beginning to worry, "Let's find out why," he said as he opened the door to his office.
Janice was indeed crying, and she had a black eye, which she had attempted to cover up with makeup.
"What happened?" Adam immediately asked.
"We were drinking, wine, a lot of it. We invited over a guest, there was a fight. Everyone is okay, at least, I mean...they are alive," she said, trying unsuccessfully to stop crying.
"Where is Cory?" Adam asked.
"At the hospital," she replied.
"How bad is it?"
"I don't know, he yelled at me, hit me when I tried to ask," she said, bursting into another full round of tears.
"That doesn't sound like Cory," Adam was perplexed now. "I need to go to the hospital. You stay here and compose yourself. I don't want the employees to see you crying, not to mention that black eye, it's not proper for employees to see their bosses wife like this," as he walked out of the office, he dialed his brother's phone. It rang three times, and then went to voicemail.
He drove ten over the speed limit the whole way to the hospital, trying to call his brother the whole time. The red lights were his bane though; he seemed to hit every single one.
Finally, when he arrived at the hospital, the receptionist was able to tell him that Cory was on the fourth floor, in intensive care. He quickly found his brothers room and went inside. What he saw was drastically worse than he had expected.
Cory was unconscious; his face was a mangled mess of bruises, swollen flesh, and lacerations. His neck was in a brace and both his arms were in casts. Machines of all types were arrayed around him, some beeping, some buzzing, and some humming. The curtains on the windows were closed shut, keeping out all the natural light.
Adam went to his brother's side, "What happened Cory? Who did this to you?" He knew Cory wouldn't answer, but it made him feel better asking anyway.
He wasn't alone with Cory for too long before a nurse came in. He was young, clean cut, with broad shoulders and a handsome face. His red hair was cut short, military style, and his skin was very fair and dotted with innumerable freckles.
The nurse stopped cold in his tracks when he saw Adam, "I'm sorry, who are you?" he asked authoritatively.
"I'm his brother," Adam said, gesturing at Cory.
"Ah. I'm Sean, his nurse," he informed.
"Nice to meet you," Adam shook his hand, "So tell me, what's the situation?"
"Well, we don't know what happened; he arrived at the hospital in the condition you see him in. He has been unconscious the whole time, someone beat the hell out of him," Sean explained.
"I don't understand, Cory carries a gun. Why didn't he use it?" Adam was asking himself more than the nurse.
"I couldn't tell you, although we didn't find any gun on him when he got here. Something else to; your brother has lost over half of his bodies blood supply, he was almost dead when he got here" Sean said.
"Was he wearing a holster?"
"No,"
"Was he brought in by ambulance?"
"Yes, but I don't know who made the 911 call," Sean adjusted one of the machines slightly.
"Probably his wife, she's got a black eye and is crying nonstop. Were the police notified?" Adam asked.
"Yes, they have already been here and left. They asked us to call them as soon as family showed up," Sean explained.
"Don't bother, I'll go to them," Adam handed Sean his business card, "Do me a favor, call me if his condition changes, or he wakes up."
"Will do," Sean said.
Adam headed for Cory's house instead of the police station. He wanted to have a look around before the cops had their way with the place. Upon pulling into the driveway, he noticed several things. Cory's car was still parked in the garage, which was open. Janice wasn't home yet either, but the front door ajar slightly.
Adam quietly exited his jeep, drawing his 1911 from his holster and sneaking up to the door. He waited briefly before going in, trying to hear anything that might hint danger. Everything was quiet, so he gently pushed the door open all the way and stepped inside, clearing the immediate room and moving further inside the home.
He cleared the living room and the bathroom, then moved on to the kitchen. It was completely ransacked, food was strewn across the counters, flour was scattered throughout. The fridge was open and most of the contents were spilled out onto the floor. Almost every cupboard had been opened, all the contents rifled through.
The trash can was tipped over; all of its contents spilled out and searched. He saw no blood though, which was a good thing. Suddenly out of the corner of his eye, he caught movement, he brought up his gun and spun around, his heart was pounding. Whatever it had been just made a dash for the living room.
Adam pursued, carefully, with his gun at the ready. He heard strange chittering sounds coming from behind the couch, slowly; he moved around to get a look behind. He breathed a huge sigh of relief as he identified the source of the noise.
A raccoon stared back at him, clearly distressed and looking for an escape, "I almost shot you little guy," he told the coon.
He finished clearing the main floor and moved upstairs, checking each room as he moved down the hallway. Nothing was out of place, no signs of struggle, no bodies, and no blood. Until he reached his brother's bedroom, then all hell broke loose.
The door was shut, but blood had thoroughly soaked the carpet from underneath the door. Adam brought his gun back to ready position and threw the door open, if the blood in the carpet had been disturbing, it paled in comparison to what lay in the room.
There was indeed a body, male, dead. Adam checked the room for occupants, and found it empty. The body was in bad shape, throat torn open, deep fingernail scratches down his back, a massive black and green bruise over his left shoulder blade. It looked like two of his fingers had been bitten off, and one of his eyes was hanging out of the socket.
The bed was drenched in blood as well, and there was a large rip in the mattress. There were candles burning on the dresser, they were nearly out, having burned all night long. The ambulance obviously hadn't picked him up here, otherwise the cops and CSI would be swarming all over this place.
He grabbed his phone and called the one person he trusted to handle this mess, "Bill, its Adam. I have a situation. Yes, double your standard pay. And a bonus if you keep your mouth shut about what you see. My brother's place. Yes I need a forensic sweep. Anything you can tell me." He hung up, confident that Bill would remedy the disaster.
He pulled open the night stand drawer and found his brother's Glock, it was loaded, but unused. There was also a small roll of money, which wasn't abnormal for Cory, who liked to keep a supply of cash on hand for emergencies. Several boxes of ammo were also stored in the drawer, along with a silencer and several spare magazines.
Adam put everything into a duffel bag he had grabbed from the closet and shut the door behind him on the way out. As he walked down the hallway, he heard a voice downstairs, someone was in the home.
He quietly set down the duffel bag and drew his gun again. As he came down the stairs, he saw a cop standing at the doorway, talking on a cell phone, he had his back turned and didn't see Adam. He quickly holstered his weapon and announced himself.
"Officer, what can I do for you?" He asked, walking down the stairs.
"Found the front door open, thought maybe something was wrong, just called for backup. Are you the homeowner?" He asked, his hand resting on his service pistol.
"No, this is my brothers house, I came to get him some things while he's staying in the hospital," Adam said carefully.
"Mind if I see some I.D.?" the cop asked.
"Sure, here," Adam reached into his pocket and pulled out his wallet, handing his driver's license to him.
"Thank you Mr. Grenwich, everything alright? The kitchen looks like a tornado came through," the cop said, his hand still on his gun.
"Yes, there was a raccoon in here. Not sure where he went," Adam explained.
"Ah, well, be careful, raccoons can ruin your day fast if they are mad and decide to attack."
"I will be cautious. Will there be anything else? Nothing is wrong here, you can call off the backup," Adam said.
"Oh yeah, guess you are right," the cop talked into his radio, calling an all clear and cancelling the backup.
"Have a good day officer, I appreciate you stopping by to check things out. Good to know you guys are around to keep everyone safe," Adam lied.
"No problem Sir, hope your brother recovers." The officer left, letting Adam relax.
Adam fetched the duffel bag, grabbed the spare key from the closet under the stairs and locked the place up tight as he left. He wasn't sure about the raccoon, but he knew Bill would take care of it if the critter was still inside.
He drove back to the office, he needed to talk to Janice again, find out what she knew. He wasted no time in getting straight up to the office; he found her sitting exactly where he had left her. She wasn't crying anymore, and her face was even more swollen than before.
He kneeled down in front of her, "Janice, I need you to tell me what happened," he said.
"I...I don't remember," she replied, her voice was quiet, mousy.
"Don't lie to me Janice; I've been to the house. What in the hell happened?"
"Please, I can't remember," she was about to cry again.
"Janice, this is serious. The nurse told me that Cory was almost dead when he got to the hospital. What did you see?"
"I told you! I don't remember!" She insisted.
"Bullshit. Talk to me. What's the last thing you do remember?"
"I...um...Cory, he wasn't supposed to be home. He told me he had to work late, some big contract he was working on. He told me not to wait up for him," She explained.
"Who was the man in your room?" Adam pushed.
She started crying again, "I was having an affair. His name is Alan, he is a very nice man," Janice told him. "Cory is never home, I have needs, I can't stand being alone all the time," she said.
"Alan...what's his last name?"
"I...I don't know. I only met him two days ago," she responded.
"You brought a strange man into your home to fuck? What's the matter with you? Was he responsible for Cory's injuries?"
"No, no. Well, they fought. Cory came home earlier than I expected and found us in bed. They fought, punching and kicking each other. Alan got the better of Cory. Cory just looked at me; I could see that I broke his heart. He left, I swear. He walked out of that house and left, didn't say another word. I went after him a few minutes later, but couldn't find him. When I came back to the house, I found Alan, dead. So much blood." She was starting to hyperventilate.
Adam smacked her across the face, bringing her back to her senses, "So you didn't call 911?"
"I...No, I was too scared," she said.
"You are leaving something out," Adam accused her.
"No, I've told you everything," she insisted.
"How did you get a black eye?"
"I told you this morning, Cory hit me."
"Before or after he got into the fight with Alan?"
"I don't remember," she said.
"Liar," he leaned in close and whispered, "I'm going to investigate this, no police. If I find out that you had anything to do with this, if this was done on purpose to ruin my brother's reputation...I will kill you. You have my word on that, Janice. My solemn word. Now get out of my brothers building or I will have you thrown out by security," Adam stepped away from her and opened the door, gesturing for her to depart through it.
Adam watched her leave, then called Bill again.
"What do you want? I'm a little busy here," Bill answered.
"I need phone records once you are done. Both Cory and Janice. I also need to know who that was..."
"You should have told me about the damn raccoon. The little fucker bit the shit out of my leg," Bill said, annoyed.
"Sorry, figured you would take care of it," Adam said.
"Yeah, well, you are paying for the rabies treatment,"
"Fine. Just get me information," Adam said.
"Will do boss, no worries."
Adam informed the VP of the company that Cory would be taking an extended leave of absence due to family matters. Then he headed back to the hospital. Unfortunately, his brother's room was full of people when he arrived.
He located Sean, "Who are all of those people?"
"Detectives, and your brother is awake, that's why they are here," Sean said.
"I told you to call me," Adam was furious.
"He's only been awake for ten minutes. I told the detectives to wait, but they insisted, sorry," Sean said, embarrassed.
"Don't worry about it, probably nothing you could have done," Adam said, grabbing out his phone. "Hello, Mr. Vance? Yes, there are detectives here, something tells me my Brother might need some legal representation. We are at the hospital, get here as quick as you can. I will stall the detectives."
"You know something?" Sean asked.
"You are awfully inquisitive for a nurse," Adam sniped back.
"Sorry, it's just a little boring around here. This is the most excitement we have had in months," Sean said.
"I'm so glad my family could provide you with some excitement," Adam said sarcastically.
"I didn't mean it that way, please..." Sean was blushing with embarrassment.
"Nevermind, don't worry about it. I'm just a little on edge," Adam explained.
Sean took the hint and left, leaving Adam alone.
Adam walked into the room, "Gentlemen, I'm told you are the detectives who have been assigned to my Brother's case?"
The detectives were obviously upset at having their interrogation interrupted, "Sir, you will wait outside, we will talk with you in a moment," one of them said.
"Excuse me? I will do no such thing," Adam replied.
"We have to ask your brother questions about what happened," the detective said.
"No you don't. At least not until his lawyer arrives," Adam said firmly.
"He's not in trouble, he doesn't need a lawyer, we are just trying to understand what happened."
"Detectives, you have been informed that my Brother will require legal representation before speaking with you any further, please leave now." Adam ordered them out.
Grudgingly the detectives left, glaring at Adam the whole time.
As soon as they were gone, Adam shut the door and took a seat next to his brother's hospital bed.
"Adam. I'm glad you are here," Cory said weakly. He coughed, causing his whole face to grimace in pain.
"What the fuck, Cory. What happened?"
"Janice, the bitch is cheating on me," he said, angrily.
"Yes, I found that out this morning. Who did this to you? Was it Alan?"
"Alan...is that the scumbags name, the one who's been boning my wife?" Cory asked.
"Yes, but did he do this to you?" Adam asked again.
"No, not all of it. I came home last night, found them in bed together. My bed. My fucking bed. I grabbed him, threw him off of her and pounced on him. I hit him, he hit me, we fought. He was better at fighting than I was, so he beat me. I was too mad to stay in that house another moment. I left, walked the fuck out. Didn't know where I was going, or what I was doing. I just walked. Next thing I remember is a bright flash of light, then I woke up in the hospital."
"Janice told me a similar story," Adam informed him.
"That bitch. I want her gone from my life. I can't even stand to look at her anymore, even thinking about her makes my head hurt. How bad is this?" Cory asked, fear creeping into his voice.
Adam made sure no one could hear them, "I went to your house, Alan was murdered, your bedroom was a gory scene, I can tell you that. Janice has a black eye and I can tell she is holding something back. She didn't tell me the whole story. But don't worry, I called Bill. He's taking care of everything on the forensic end."
"Good, I'm lucky to have such a good brother," Cory said, coughing some more, "If Alan is dead, he probably wasn't the one who attacked me."
"My thoughts exactly. You were foolish to walk out your door alone without your gun," Adam said.
"I know, I know. Too late now, at least I'm alive," Cory said.
"Alive, but you won't be leaving here anytime soon," said a doctor who had just entered the room.
"What is it?" Cory asked, worried.
"Well, you have pretty severe injuries, especially to your head. But that's not the problem, at least not the biggest problem. We scanned your head to make sure you didn't have brain damage. We found a tumor, a fairly large one. I'm no cancer specialist, so you will be transferred to a different doctor, but I can tell you, it's bad. It's the largest tumor I've ever seen, and I've been practicing medicine for nearly thirty years."
"The hits just keep on coming," Cory said, exasperated.
"Don't worry, the specialist will be here this afternoon, for now, I'm gonna do my best to fix up your physical injuries. You have some internal bleeding, we will need to do surgery to repair it. Whoever beat you to a pulp must have kicked you while you were down, literally. Two broken ribs and severe trauma to your abdomen," the Doctor said.
"This is insane," Adam said, running his fingers over his head.
"Adam, just go. Find out who beat the hell out of me. I need to be alone right now," Cory said. His voice was shaky.
"Are you sure?" Adam asked, worried.
"Positive, please, go," Cory repeated.
Adam did as he was told. He ran into Sean again as he headed toward the elevator.
"Hi," Sean said awkwardly.
"Hi," Adam replied, not really feeling up for a conversation.
"Look, I'm sorry about what I said. I should have been more sensitive to your situation," Sean said.
"I told you, don't worry about it," Adam said.
"It's just, well, nevermind," Sean said, turning and running off.
Adam frowned, confused. He got into the elevator and sank back into the corner, covering his face with his hands. His stress level was sky-rocketed. He took a couple deep breaths and collected himself.
The elevator stopped at the second floor and two doctors joined him. They were too busy talking with one another to even pay attention to Adam. They all exited at the first floor, and to Adam's displeasure, the detectives were still sitting in the lobby.
"Mr. Grenwich, we need to talk with you," one of them said.
"Gentlemen, may I see some badges please?"
"I'm Detective Fisher, this is my partner, Detective Collins," they each displayed their badges.
"What exactly do you want? I don't have time for twenty questions, get to the damn point," Adam said, short tempered.
"Sir, you need to lose the attitude, we are here to help. Your brother was attacked, and we intend to find out who it was," Detective Fisher said.
"Our family doesn't require police assistance. This is a private family matter and it will be handled accordingly," Adam explained.
"I'm afraid that isn't going to be good enough," Detective Fisher responded.
"Oh really? And why is that?" Adam asked.
"This is the ninth attack in one week, your brother is the only one to have survived the assault." Detective Fisher dropped another bomb on Adam.
"Nine attacks? Murders? What the hell?" Adam flopped down into a lobby chair, massaging his temples.
"We have reason to believe that all the attacks are being committed by one person. We can't discuss details, but we can say that the amount of blood your brother lost leads us to believe he was attacked by the same person as the other victims," Detective Fisher said.
"So there is a serial killer on the loose and you haven't warned the public? Perfect." Adam said, disgusted.
"Press conference is scheduled for this evening; we wanted to be sure before we came forward with it. Your brother's attack was the final piece we needed."
"Well, I can assure you, if I find anything out, you will be the first people I call," Adam said. "If you will excuse me, I need to be going." Adam didn't bother to wait for their response; he simply got up and left.
