SECOND TAPE
For the first time in my life I not only saw a train but boarded one and it tickled my fancy very much. Especially the fact that in each coach there was even a toilet! We didn't even have a toilet in our house just a wooden hut behind the stable. Each coach was divided into several compartments that were like small rooms in a row. I imagined that one could even live in a coach making of one compartment a kitchen, of another the bedroom and so on and when he wanted to move to another place he just coupled the coach to a train going to this or that city, and so he goes to that city with all his house.
In the train everybody was wearing fine clothes. I thought that it was like they all wore their best clothes and this was possible. I was reading the names of the stations, names I never heard before where people was getting on and off. Each time I asked how much time was still remaining to Turin as I had no watch. A lady told me she too was going to Turin, at Porta Nuova station, and anyway I shouldn't worry as Turin was the last stop and so I couldn't go wrong.
Another thing I noticed was that in the train almost everybody was speaking Italian and not a dialect. How far it seemed already to my valley and what wide plains the train was now passing through! I wondered what my friends were doing at that moment and if they were thinking of me or had already forgotten me.
It was weird travelling in the train, it was like the fields were turning on a different plan and one had just the time to glimpse something before it had already disappeared. The train was running so fast that it gave me almost a feeling of giddiness. When another train passed in the opposite direction it made a huge rumble and everything trembled and at first I got really scared.
We finally reached Torino Porta Nuova station. It was huge, and packed with people, even some black people and there was a lot of confusion and plenty of trains all lined up at the various platforms.
At this point I had to telephone to uncle Domenico to tell him that I had arrived. I had already seen a telephone at my village for there was one at the tavern, another at the tobacconist, one at the city hall and a fourth one in the parish priest's house. But I had never used one so I carefully watched what people did when they entered a booth. They slipped some coins in a slot, took the receiver, turned the dial with the numbers and after a short time they began to speak.
As soon as a booth was empty I went in but to be sure I also read the instructions on the wall. Then I took out my coin-purse, slipped some coins in the slot and dialled one of the numbers. I was lucky because as that was my first telephone call, I wouldn't have been able to tell a free line tone from a busy one. Anyway I heard a man's voice answer.
"Hello?"
"Yes, I am Stefano Boetto..."
"Oh, Stefano, where are you?"
"At Turin Porta Nuova station."
"Good and welcome. Now listen, go out of the station and find a taxi and give the driver the shop address and ask him to bring you here. I'll be waiting for you."
"Alright..." I said.
"Bye, and see you soon." my uncle said and I heard a click.
I still said, "Bye..." and put back the receiver.
Some coins fell in a little niche and I took them. I went out, and asked myself what was a taxi and how could I recognize one. Out of the station I was about to ask a passer-by when I saw a row of yellow cars and on top of each was a small black box with written in red "taxi". There were people queuing and one or two of them got into one of the cars, which then drove away. I understood how it worked so I queued and when it was my turn I got inside and told the driver where I had to go and asked him how much I had to pay. He started and told me that the fare would be written on a small window in a box that he pointed to but the fare was increasing and increasing and I was starting to worry...
I now laugh thinking how ignorant I was at that time but to me everything was new and strange. In my village of Prea nobody owned a car let alone thinking of taking a taxi! Also nobody had a telephone or a TV set in their houses and so on. Town people at times can't even imagine how life is in a small secluded mountain village which is gradually losing it's population. Nowadays in Prea some people have a car and perhaps a telephone and almost all the houses have a TV... I'm sure that at the beginning of my life in Turin I must have cut a poor figure but I didn't really care for I had determined to learn everything quickly and well.
The taxi set me down in front of the Via Madama Cristina shop and I paid the driver. I went in with my suitcase filled with cheeses looking around. It was packed with old things as my mother had said. It was an odd shop, something similar to a village bazaar. From the back came a man, uncle Domenico. He was tall, lean, had waved hair and a very short silver white beard also rays of fine small wrinkles at the corners of his dark eyes, which framed a sharp nose.
He smiled and said, "So you are Stefano, right?"
"Yes, sir..."
He came towards me offering me his hand and said, "As you are coming to live with me like a son, wouldn't it better if you call me by my name?"
"Yes, sure, alright." I said.
"So, then, are you happy coming to live with me?"
I looked at him - he had a likeable aspect, therefore I said, "I think I will, Domenico."
"You think? Don't you feel certain?"
"Well... we still don't know one another. It might be you who is not happy to have me at your place..."
He again smiled, and said, "Well, it's possible. But I think it's worth giving it a try, don't you think so too?"
He then showed me the shop and also the back and the storage room. He explained to me how his work was done and told me that if all this was one day to become mine, I had to learn how to do his work. He asked me what school degree I had, and seemed surprised that I had only the middle school diploma. I felt a little ashamed. After some time the shop doorbell rang and I thought it was a customer but instead it was Anselmo, a man of thirty five who worked with my uncle and was a restorer. My uncle introduced us. Anselmo seemed neither unpleasant nor particularly agreeable. He was a man of few words and had been working for my uncle for more than ten years.
Domenico asked him to take care of the shop and went out with me. First of all he took me to a bar to have a coffee. Then he took me to a street full of clothing shops and made me choose a lot of clothes - both informal and elegant, and some underwear and shoes. I was embarrassed but also excited - for I had never dreamed I could have so many beautiful things! At the end of our shopping my uncle said, "For a start it will be enough but you can buy all you like later for yourself, a little at a time."
Another thing that astonished me was that my uncle didn't pay with money but with a small plastic rectangle. I too now use a credit card, a cash card, or cheques but at that time that way to pay seemed me incomprehensible and... almost like magic.
Then we loaded in his car all my new clothes and shoes he had just bought. He then drove me to his place where we unloaded everything behind the street door where he told me to wait as he was going to park the car. He came a while later and in a lift, another incredible novelty to me, we went up to his apartment.
It was a really beautiful and large apartment. There were ceilings made with painted and recessed panels and it was a mixture of the extremely modern and the antique that gave a feeling of discreet luxury. My room had a wooden queen size bed, a wall all covered by closets with carved doors, a desk-secretaire built into a bookshelf with glass doors and there were two wide windows looking into the courtyard. There was an adjoining access area with two doors - on one side the toilet and on the other the bathroom for my exclusive use.
There was also my uncle's bedroom with his private toilet and bathroom, a wide kitchen with a larder, the living room, the dining room, the writing room, my uncle's studio and a toilet for the guests.
There was also a "house-maid", a woman in her fifties, who had been working there for fifteen years. She worked for ten hours each day from ten in the morning to eight in the evening. She cleaned, washed, ironed, cooked and did the necessary shopping. Her name was Tina. She was a small, fast and tireless woman. My uncle asked her to set the cheeses in the larder and my clothes in my room. She smelled the cheeses that my father made me bring and said, "Those really are cheeses made how God commanded! The genuine thing!" and put them in the larder.
My uncle gave me a house key. He then told me that first of all I had to enrol at a driving school to get a license. Then he asked me if I felt like starting again to go to school. I told him that I was not sure I could succeed as at the middle school my record was not so good, but that I would give it a try. He explained to me that as one day I would have to carry on his business it would be good if I got a high school arts diploma. Therefore he was thinking of enrolling me in a private school for evening courses where I could pass the tests of two years in one so that in just two years I could graduate. I told him it was fine with me and that I would try my best at what he decided I should do.
He told me to choose amongst my new clothes one that I wanted to wear that day, to take a bath and then to completely change my clothes. We would have lunch and then go to a barber-shop to get a more modern hair cut for me... So my transformation from mountain boy to city boy started. I almost didn't recognize myself.
I gradually got used to the big town though at first, seeing some squares that could almost contain my whole village made an impression on me. I started to attend the driving school then spent my free time in the shop with my uncle and Anselmo, helping them as best I could and starting to learn the antique-dealer trade. My uncle seemed to be pleased with me and he was always very kind to me. Each week he gave me some pocket money, a kind of pay, with which I had to buy my clothes or anything I needed.
In my bedroom there was a colour TV with a video-recorder and a stereo deck. I bought some videos and some CDs. At lunch and supper time I always had nice chats with my uncle. He was an agreeable and very cultivated person. The first months, besides my uncle, Anselmo and Tina, I knew nobody and was feeling somewhat lonely, but the many novelties of my city life were helping to overcome my loneliness.
Summer came and in the month of August my uncle closed the shop and we went to his villa in the Riviera taking with us also Tina. It was a really nice villa surrounded by a small park and a tall wall, not far from the seashore where we were going to bathe almost every day. My uncle had a lean and strong body even though it was starting to show the marks of age.
When the vacation was over we went up to Prea to call on my family. My brothers were wide eyed at seeing me so transformed, as were my friends. I told them all the incredible experiences I had had in those few months. Then with the friends, except for Giovanni and Michele who were doing their army service, we met in secret and finally cold make love. I really needed it and even though we were just four, I was really pleased and relieved myself.
I found that my brother Carlo, who had taken my place, had not yet been involved in their sexual games and that he preferred to pass his time rather with Michele and Giovanni's younger brothers rather than with them. So the three of them could go on amusing themselves as before without too many problems. Roberto being the only son of a widowed mother, had been exempted from army service. Alessandro who was his cousin, moved to live at Roberto's house because there was more room than in his house and they shared a bedroom so they were now always sleeping together and they could make love almost every night.
Marco envied them a little but when they were at the mountain pasture there was always room for him also. I too envied them as in Turin I still didn't know anybody and didn't even know how to find a real close friend like them. I had to be content to relieve myself and I usually did it when I was showering.
We went back to Turin and resumed our usual life. My uncle opened again the shop and I again attended the driving school. Then at the end of September, I also started to attend the evening arts school.
At first it was somewhat hard as there were so many things I had to learn but a little at a time I was managing to enter the school life and started to like studying. It was there that I met Lorenzo and getting to know him was a turning point in my life.
Lorenzo was our architectural drawing teacher. He was a just graduated architect from the university and was only twenty-four-years old. He was a likeable young man and had a big mane of brown hair covering his forehead, blue-green eyes, a large and fine mouth always with a smile on it and a face which was slightly triangular.
When he was moving around our desks to observe how we were drawing and give us advice or to correct us, sometimes he rested one of his beautiful tapered hands on my shoulder and I enjoyed that short and light contact very much. He often wore tight jeans and I glanced sometimes at the light swelling under his fly, and became aroused fantasizing what might be hidden there. He wore an earring in his left ear lobe. It was the first time I had seen a man wearing an earring, but then I noticed that in the city there were others wearing it, as it was a fashion amongst the young.
On Thursday's evenings the lesson of architectural drawing was in the last two hours so we were leaving the school together. One evening Lorenzo asked me where I was living and suggested we could walk a stretch of street together as he lived just a few blocks from my house in Via Barbaroux. So gradually while chatting along the way going back home we started to become friends. Besides he was a good teacher who explained his subject well and I liked his way of reasoning as well as the culture he had and his young and open mentality. I was also feeling very much attracted to him as a male...
One evening he asked me if I would like to go to a disco with him on Saturday night. I answered that I would ask my uncle for permission. I don't know why but I didn't tell my uncle I had been invited by a teacher but rather by a schoolmate.
My uncle answered, "Of course you can go to dance. You have the house key. At your age it is just normal you also have some amusements. And so you can also meet some nice girls..."
He then asked me if I had with me some condoms. I looked at him surprised, without understanding. He then explained me that possibly sooner or later, I would meet a girl with whom I could end making love, thus it was better I always had with me some condoms both to avoid making her pregnant and to avoid getting a sexual illness and, above all, Aids!
Saturday evening when I had changed my clothes and was about to go out, my uncle gave me a little box containing six condoms, the kind with lube and spermicide urging me to never have sex without wearing one.
I went out and reached the Bar Blu in Piazza Castello where I had arranged to meet Lorenzo. He was already inside waiting for me. With his motorbike we went to the disco. At first the deafening noise of that place caught me by surprise. It was packed with boys and girls. I wasn't able to dance, therefore in spite of the Lorenzo's coaxing I sat down and just looked at the dancing all evening long. He danced really well, it was a sheer pleasure just looking at him. He knew a lot of people, both boys and girls, and at times he introduced them to me.
When we left, he asked me if I had enjoyed myself.
"Yes, very much."
"But you didn't dance."
"I told you, I'm not able to. You are really skilful though..."
"I noticed you never moved your eyes from me... But it's not difficult. If you want I can teach you. We can arrange that you can come some times to my place and I will teach you. Do you want to?"
"It would be great!" I said.
That Sunday my uncle asked me if I had enjoyed myself. I told him I did then also told him that I was not able to dance but that my school-mate had promised to teach me if I went some time to his place... Domenico said it was a very good idea and urged me to go. I couldn't have asked for anything better!
On Sunday I usually went with my uncle somewhere in his car. My uncle liked fishing very much therefore we often went to some mountain stream or to a river. Tina always prepared in advance a basket with the food for a picnic.
That Sunday my uncle, while we were eating, told me, "You are young and you will gradually get friends... boys, girls. So you might like to spend Sundays with them..."
"But I enjoy going with you, Domenico" I said.
"You are kind but if sometimes you are invited and you would like to go, accept. From Saturday evening after closing time to Monday afternoon before school, you can also stay out for the full weekend if you like. You don't have to have a problem about it."
"Thank you, uncle." I said.
"You don't have to thank me as I want you to have a normal life like all the other boys your age. Only take care about drugs, Stefano. Never even try it even if they swear to you that it doesn't do any harm and it's amusing..." So he explained to me another thing I hadn't known at all.
When on Tuesday night I met Lorenzo in the school, I told him I could go to his place when he was free to learn dancing. He was happy and told me we will start very soon. But as I in daytime had to work in the shop and in the evenings to attend the school I was free only on Sundays and Monday mornings. He then said that next Saturday evening we could go to a disco, then meet again at his place on Sunday.
On Saturday evening he took me to a different disco, a larger and more elegant one compared to the first one where he took me. I again admired him while he was dancing. There were also several other handsome boys attracting my glances and I was often aroused just looking at them especially when they were dancing with their so sensual and erotic movements. Looking at the kind of clothes they wore, I started to get an idea about how I would like to be dressed and I decided that I would gradually start to buy some clothes of that kind.
I was beginning to like the deafening and strongly rhythmic music, the shining and coloured lights in unceasing movement, the areas of soft and mysterious shadows. I could feel the rhythm of the music vibrate all long my body and found it was rather sexy. But above all I found Lorenzo more and more erotic and imagined him naked and what I would have liked to do with him...
The few times the DJ put on a slow number, Lorenzo stopped dancing and came back to sit near me. Then only couples went on the floor to dance, moving their bodies against each other.
"Don't you have a girlfriend?" I asked him, having noticed that in the disco almost everybody seemed to be couples.
"No, god forbid! I don't want to lose my freedom." he answered wrinkling his forehead in a funny expression.
At night he took me back to my house on his motorbike.
"So, then Stefano, it's agreed for tomorrow morning?"
"Yes, at ten o'clock at the Bar Blu." I confirmed.
"Very good, I'll wait for you there. Did you ever eat at a Chinese restaurant?"
"Chinese? No, never. Is it true they eat ants, and dog meat?" I asked, alarmed at the prospect.
He laughed, "No, no, it isn't true. The food is tasty and fine. Tomorrow we will go to have lunch at a cheap but good one almost in front of my house. Are you game?"
"Well, yes, if you say it's good food..."
"Good, then see you tomorrow morning, Stefano. Have sweet dreams."
"Bye."
I went home where my uncle should already be sleeping, as all the lights were off. Without making any noise I went to my bedroom. On the bed there was a note from uncle Domenico telling me that he would wake up early to go fishing as usual and that he would let me sleep. He wished me a good Sunday.
That note gave me pleasure for my uncle was really kind to me and I enjoyed more and more living with him. He was interested in all I did and cared about me but without being nosy and leaving me much freedom. He gave me his advice and explained thing, but always without interfering in my life.
Now also there was Lorenzo with whom I was becoming more and more infatuated although he was one of my teachers. He was attracting me more and more and his brisk manners reminded me a little of my friend Roberto but Lorenzo was, so to say, a finer version though I don't mean physically, as they were very different. A little of everything in Lorenzo fascinated me, but above all his tapered hands... his large and thin mouth... and his clear and deep eyes...
Sunday was somewhat gloomy with a thick and fine drizzle falling. I dressed and ate breakfast then put on a waterproof jacket and cloth cap and at ten sharp I was in the Bar Blu. Lorenzo arrived almost immediately, "What a day! Happily we will be at home." he said cheerfully while we were walking towards his house.
We entered through an old gate to a somewhat grey and dilapidated entrance hall, crossed a cobbled paved courtyard, and went up a worn stone stairway. At the third floor he stopped in front of a massive wooden door and opened it. His apartment was small, composed only of a kitchen, a bathroom the bedroom and a living room that was accessed directly from the landing and connected all the other rooms. It was furnished in a very plain though agreeable way. On the wall there was a big poster of a young actor, James Dean, who at the time I didn't know. All around there was a kind of agreeable disorder.
"Here, this is my nest." he said when we were inside, while I was pulling off my jacket.
"Do you live alone, here?" I asked him.
"Yes, sure."
"And your family?"
"They live in Susa or rather in a small village near Susa."
We chatted some more then he showed me his things, explaining them to me. Then he put on some music and started teaching me to move to rhythm. I tried to imitate him and gradually was able to and realized it was not so difficult. But above all I was admiring and enjoying the movements of his body, clad in lilac colour jeans and a black turtleneck of light cotton. The gentle swelling of his fly and the curve of his firm little ass attracted my glances more than anything else.
He gave me advice, showed me the movements and made me repeat them, correcting them but tireless and always smiling.
"Good, so... move some more... be more loose, good... now look..." he was saying, going on to teach me.
Then he turned off the music. He said it was time to go out for the lunch and we went to the Chinese restaurant. I was looking around full of curiosity and saw with wide eyes the Chinese people who were serving us. I thought I still have a lot of things to see, discover and learn.
The lunch was a real surprise. No two dishes were alike and I found that everything was really tasty, above all the fried ice-cream! After lunch we went back to his house.
"Later we will try again to dance. Now with our stomachs full it is better to relax for a while..." Lorenzo said. He then asked me if I would like to look at a movie at the TV. He took a video and switched on the video-player. It was the movie "Ghost", a moving but also amusing story which I liked very much. Then we resumed the dance lesson.
Lorenzo was beautiful but when he was dancing he seemed even more beautiful. I liked him too much and started to ask myself how I could make him understand that I liked him and desired him. Some moments I was thinking to simply tell him so but then I didn't have the courage. Also I was thinking I could just touch him but then this was even more difficult to do.
"Stefano, try to keep your body still and move just your legs... so..." he instructed me.
"It's difficult..." I answered, trying to imitate him.
"No... look..." he said and moving behind me seized my waist forcing me to stay still and told me to go on moving my legs and feet following the rhythm. That firm grasp on my waist, those warm and strong hands I could feel through my clothes, gave me intense and wonderful sensations and made me aroused.
"Good, so... go on... move more your hips and legs..." he instructed me.
I could have turned back between his hands to kiss him as I was feeling such ecstasy and was in rapture. I wanted him with all of myself. I wanted that hold to transform into an embrace! I wanted those hands to undress me! I wanted to make love with Lorenzo!
I was tormented as to how long that sweet desire would go on, I was asking myself what I could or should do. My brain was in turmoil, my heart was thumping strongly, my temples were pulsating like two drums, my body was almost trembling... and my bird struggled furiously against my trousers as if he wanted to break out and to free himself... I had never felt so excited or such desire before in my life!
