Chapter 6

It had been several weeks since I found Tom lying by the side of the road. The police still had not found Jeff Hunter. They were following his trail by the use of his credit cards. At first his movement was away from us but then he maxed out his credit cards and the trail stopped. We were told not to let out guard down and to keep our eyes open.

Aunt Mary said she had better check in with her niece and let her know that she was going to go on a cruise with her friends and would call back when she returned. We took Aunt Mary to the mall so she could use the pay phone. We didn't want to leave any way for Mr. Hunter to trace her call.

When Aunt Mary was talking to her niece, she suddenly turned pale and looked like she was going to faint. "Look dear, I am going to put a man on the line. Please don't hang up. Listen to what he has to say." Aunt Mary handed the phone to me.

"Hello, Let me assure you that your Aunt is safe and is in no harm. I will try to fill you in with some of the details but I can't tell everything. I know I am being very evasive but I have be to protect your aunt, Mrs. Hunter and Tom. Their lives are at stake. I know this is going to scare you half to death but please bear with me. What ever you do, don't give out any information to anyone. You must forget that you received this call. Don't do anything that will put yourself in jeopardy. Do you have a pencil and paper? I am going to give you a phone number which is a private number for the police chief in Aunt Mary's home town. I want you to tell him what you have told me. Ok? Good! (I gave her the number) That is correct. Wait 5 minutes to call. I will call him let him know that you will be calling and to bring you up to date. I just wish I could give you more information but for your Aunt Mary's safety I just can't The chief will be able to fill in a lot of the blanks. I will Call you back in half an hour. Yes, Aunt Mary and the Hunters are safe for the time being. Hopefully, Mr. Hunter will be caught soon.! I sorry that we scared you but we really had no other choice. Ok, I will talk with you later!" I hung up the phone and dialed the chief on my cell phone. We talked for a few minutes and I told him to call after the niece had called. I must admit things were getting a little scary.

After abut 20 minutes, my cell started ringing. "Hello, Chief! Oh, I have caller id and I have programed you into my phone. She gave you permission to trace her phone calls and you are in the process of doing that now. Sounds great! I hope you catch the SOB and soon. We are all getting a little edgy and are getting sore necks walking around looking over our shoulders. So were you able to put the niece at ease. That is great! I am sure that Aunt Mary will be glad to hear the news. I am going to call her back now that Aunt Mary will be able to talk with her. Later, Chief. Thanks"

"Aunt Mary, Nancy and Tom, I know that all of you only heard one side of the conservation. Mr. Hunter has called you niece, Aunt Mary. He had someone break into your house and found her number. The Chief has arrested the person but he can't tell us who it is. So far, he has not broken his silence and has not told the Chief where Mr. Hunter is. The Chief is in the process of tracing your niece's phone calls. Your niece and her family are under police protection now around the clock. So she is really in no danger. The Chief and your niece have talked now and she wants you to call her back. The only thing is we will still use the pay phone and don't talk about the case. Are you ready to call? Good, Let's do it! Every thing is starting to look a little brighter."

Aunt Mary talked with her niece for a long time. She was very emotional but now she really looked relaxed. Finally, she handed the phone to me. "Hello, John speaking. Thank you Dear. I love these people dearly and I don't think I will give them up and let them go. They are my family now, So I guess you are too. When all of this mess is cleared up, I'll put Aunt Mary on the plane and send her to see you. In fact, we all just may come. Don't take any chances and don't let your guard down. I am so glad that you have protection. So we will talk with you later. Good-bye dear. Yes, I'll give Aunt Mary a big hug and kiss for you." I did just as soon as I hung up the phone.

"Hey gang, let's pile into the car and head home. I think it must be getting close to dinner time. Larry won't like it if we're late."

Two little boys were very glad to see Aunt Mary. I think Aunt Mary was just as glad to see them. Larry had a gourmet dinner ready for us . What a treat to have the very best meal every night.

It is outstanding the mending that Tom and Nancy had done. They were at last independent and could take care of themselves.

"John, you know that soon my husband, I guess I should say `ex' will be caught. We need to start planning what we are going to do in the near future. We just can't go on living with you forever."

"Nancy, I am glad that you brought this subject up. I have been wandering how I was going to approach the three of you. Rest assured I have no intentions of kicking any of you out. I have a proposition to lay on the table. This is not something that all three of you will have to agree upon. Each of you can make his or her own choice."

" First off, money is no problem for me. I don't think all four of us could live long enough to spend all of it. My grandfather left me this house and the land it sits on, plus a very large bank roll. My dad left me the business that I run and it has been very successful. Along with good investments, I have a few dollars to play with. I have no family except for a couple of cousins but my grandfather and uncle left them well off also. I don't have to worry about them. I have never been married, so I have no family of my own."

"Here is the deal that I am offering you. You don't have to give me an answer tonight as there is no big rush. I would like to extent to all of you an invitation for you to stay and become my family. You will have complete freedom to come and go as you please and do your own thing. Nancy, you can go to work, although it is not necessary, do volunteer work or what ever turns you own. Aunt Mary, I am just going to spoil you rotten-send you on cruses, tours ,long vacations, etc. Tom, Young man you don't have much choice, you are going to school so you had better start picking out a college and fill out you applications. Just kidding Tom, you can also do your own choosing. If you do decide on college it will be a full scholarship and you won't have any expenses. In no way, do I want to control any of you. But I would like it very much if you would become my family."

"After we finish eating, I am going into the study and do some work that I need to complete tonight. Maybe we can all hit the pool and hot tub when I finish."

"John, I think......"

"Just hold it Nancy, we can have this discussion later. I don't want you rush into anything. Nancy, If you were going to say I think it is time for desert, I agree 100%! Sorry, to interrupt."

"John, you must have read my mind, that is exactly what I was going to say." Laughed Nancy.

"John, I think I will start planning my first trip, Why don't you plan on coming along? Chuckled Aunt Mary.

"I think you have a very good idea for me and I talk with you later." Replied Tom. "I want to know, just what are you getting out of all this?"

"The satisfaction of knowing that I can make a difference in your lives. I know that all of you were probably at a very low point with no hope for the future. I hope that I can change all of that. I told you I want a family and now I have a chance to have one of the best." I said with tears in my eyes. I looked around and I was not the only one. There was not a dry eye to be found.

"I think that I will do a little work and then see you at the hot tub."

"I think I am going to put my suit on and go on out to the pool. Anyone going to join me?" Nancy asked. Immediately Tom and Aunt Mary said they would join her.

Tom stopped by the study, stuck his head in and put both hands on his crotch. "Too bad you have work to do." Tom smiled and just went on his way.

I was working about an hour, when my phone rang. "Hello, Chief! You have to be kidding!" There was a long silence, and John said, "I will tell them. I am sure that they are going to extremely relieved . Later Chief, Thanks for the good news."

I stopped working and went to the bedroom and changed into my swimming suit and went to the pool. Everyone had finished swimming and were just getting in the hot tub. I joined them and skipped swimming.

I must have been grinning from ear to ear, because Tom spoke up "Ok, you look like the cat that ate the canary. What going on?"

"I just got a call from the Chief. Mr. Hunter has been captured." Everyone started clapping and shouting. "He was trying to hold-up a convenience store and shot the clerk. He was still there when the police arrived. Someone called on their cell and a patrol car was only a few blocks away. They were there in a very short time and arrested Mr. Hunter, who didn't resist. An ambulance was called and fortunately the young man who was shot had only a flesh wound in the shoulder. He is going to be ok."

"Where was he when he was arrested?" asked Nancy.

"He was only about ½ hours drive from Aunt Mary's niece. Evidently he was on the way to her house. At least they have in jail now. The chief would like to talk with all of us in the very near future. Are you up to a short drive tomorrow?"

"I need to have a little time for all of this to soak in and for me to prepare myself. Would the day after tomorrow be Ok? I am all tied in knots and I think I need a day." Said Nancy through a bunch of tears.

Tom move over and put his arms around his mother. "Mom, I know just exactly how you feel. After all he is my father and you ex-husband. I know it is best that he is now out of our lives. Now we can think about our future." Tom replied

I had moved over and held Aunt Mary in my arms. "Aunt Mary, Do you want to use my cell and call your niece. The chief said she was back in her home."

"Thanks, John I would love to. She is probably worried sick." I dialed the number and handed the phone to Aunt Mary. She moved over to the lounge chair out of our hearing and started taking to her niece.

I kept a close eye on Aunt Mary. She was crying but appeared to be handling the situation with out any serious problems. Nancy just sat there sobbing. Tom was just holding her close, which was exactly what his mother needed.

Finally we were all emotionally drained and decided to call it a night and go to bed. Tom and I were out of our swimsuits before the door was completely closed. Our lips locked and we stumbled to the bed. Never breaking apart. After a long love making session, we rolled together in the middle of the bed and just lay there holding each other and kissing occasionally.

Finally, we started talking. We had a lot to think about and decisions to be made.

"Tom, I made you an offer earlier at the dinner table. We had a very unusual development and now we need to start planning the future. Tom my offer still holds. I....." The tears were flowing now and I couldn't talk.

"Remember you once told me that I had to let it all out or whatever is bothering you would consume you. John, take your time. I am not going anywhere."

I lay there in Tom's arms, sobbing unable to control my tears. Finally, I took a deep breath, "Tom. I don't know how all of this is going to come out and how it will affect you but please bear with me and hear me out before you jump to any conclusions. I love you like a son. I want you to be my son. Tom, We have had some very good times in bed. Tonight was not exception. What I guess I am trying to say is that I love you very much but I am not in love with you. I am not gay. I still prefer women."

"John, this does not surprise me. I have had a feeling about this for a long time and I just was waiting for you make up your own mind. I will always be your son and I hope this will always be my home. I want to take you up on the offer for college. I love you, Dad!"

"Thank you, Tom for being so understanding. I was afraid that I would loose you. We can be `friends' until you leave for college or until I find a woman. In fact, we can always be friends. Maybe not lovers but friends."

"John, I am glad that you opened up to me. I have a very good feeling inside me. I never had that feeling toward my dad. You are very special and I am glad you are my dad."

"Son, you are very special to me. Do you want another turn at my ass before we go do sleep?"

"Lookout ass here I come."

The alarm clock was going off. I rolled over and shut it off. "Good morning, Tom. I have to get up and go to work there are some thing that I have to get done. No, time for any morning love. You will just have to wait until I get home from work and then this evening, you are mine! Roll over and go back to sleep."

(It looks like things have taken a complete turn-around for John and his new family. More to come shortly. Ed)
