CHAPTER TWO: THE PARTY/MEET JUSTICE ST. JOHN
TREY'S POV
"So they found out about your little ruse" Miriam said.
It was before school Thursday and she Kenji and I were standing at my locker and I was getting my stuff ready for the day. I hadn't talked to any of my other friends since I stormed off yesterday. Jessica spent all of 6th period trying to talk to me but I ignored her. Bear called my cell 12 times and my house 4 times. He also sent me 5 texts that I didn't read. Liberty and Jessica called a few times too. Drake did nothing as I expected.
"Yeah, I guess" I said kinda depressed.
"You should just stop talking to them" Kenji said.
"Kenji!" Miriam reprimanded. "They are his friends" she continued.
"So are we" he countered.
"I know, but he's known them longer. Plus they aren't trying to convince him to drop us like you're doing about them" she concluded. He looked sufficiently cowed.
I thanked her silently. I know they were self-conscious about my hanging with popular people worried I would abandon them. Miriam was right though. I had known Bear and them longer having met all of them before I started high school. Whereas I met Miriam and Kenji the first week of 9th grade.
We talked about other things like what we wanted to do this year for out robotics project. Robotics club wasn't the typical class which it why I didn't count it as such but we did have projects to do. I was thinking about what I wanted us to do when I saw both of their eyes grow big as they looked behind me. Naturally I was expecting some crazed serial killer to be standing behind me but of course it wasn't. It was just Sean Mellow. Joy...
"Hey Trey" he said with a surprisingly genuine smile on his face.
"Uh yeah" I said suspicious of this sudden encounter with my best friend's teammate.
"Yeah I was looking over things last night and realized I forgot to invite you to my party. Here you go" he said as he handed me a yellow invitation that I had seen around school.
I took the invitation but was cautious. I smelled a rat and I was not about to be "Carrie'd". Then it clicked.
"Bear got to you, didn't he?" I asked with maybe a bit of attitude.
"Bear? he said not at all convincing me.
"Yeah you know that huge dude that plays on the football team with you. You know, the real star of the team" I said with maybe a bit more attitude.
"Ouch dude. Okay maybe he did say something but suddenly I'm thinking he might be on to something. I might just have to try you out" he said with an interested half smile.
"What the hell does that mean?" I said strangely feeling like... nope, not going there. Not ever. "You know what, thanks but no thanks" I said.
"What? You're turning it down? Why?" he asked astounded.
"Yeah why?" Miriam added.
"You know what? If you are serious, prove it. Invite Miriam and Kenji too" I said smugly.
They tried to object but I had my reasons for doing this. I just felt bad about using them this way. I knew that no matter what Bear had said that he wouldn't want them there. It was nothing on them it's just how the popular crowd viewed us geeks. We were persona non grata.
Imagine my surprise when after a minute of silence he agreed
"Sure. Why not" he said and actually smiled at me and then them. Damn he had some good teeth. I was silent for a while but then I agreed.
"Great" He said. "Well I better go. Hey do me a favor and tell Liberty to invite her sister for me" he said as he walked off.
Huh, weird. I didn't even know he knew Justice. I saw the others throughout the day and gave Bear a mean glare before I decided that I would forgive him for making Sean invite me since I had to apologize for my rant the day before. I told Liberty about Sean's request and she wondered how he knew she would be home for the weekend or why he would want her there. We all made plans for when we were going to the party. Bear would pick me up and Drake would get the girls. That would be interesting since Justice didn't like Drake. Like at all. No one knew why but she hid it well from everyone except me
Thursday and Friday ticked by and it was almost time for Bear to pick me up. I was looking at myself in the mirror not liking what I saw. Apparently neither did my brother judging by the look on his face as he came into my room.
"You wearing that" said Zane with a slight grimace on his face.
I looked myself over for a minute and decided that he was right. I did not know how to dress. You would think... Nope, not going there. Point is, I looked like a dork. I needed someone with taste to do my shopping for me. I sighed deeply and looked at my brother.
"Help me" I pleaded with him.
I loved my brother so much. He didn't clown me. Didn't insult me. He just smiled and walked to my closet all the while looking me over. He rummaged throught my closet glancing at me every now and then sometimes with a small shake of his head. He finally found something and handed the clothes to me. 20 minutes later he had me looking like I actually belonged at a cool high school party.
He look loose with a low whistle followed by "You clean up good lil bro".
"Thanks" I said
"Now lets get down to it. No drinking, no drugs, and no sex" he said sounding like our dad.
"Yeah "dad" you got it. I'll be sure not to have any actual fun. You wanna put me in bubble wrap too?" I quipped.
"Okay, okay, nuff said. Since you're 17 I'm gonna assume that you are gonna drink. If you get drunk call me, please" he said. I could tell he was really worried. His own high school past was probably weighing on him. More on that later.
"I'll be fine. Bear will watch out for me" I tried to reassure him.
"Trey I mean it. Call me if you think you're getting too drunk" he said this time with a conviction I never heard him use with me before.
I loved my brother and I didn't want him to worry. It was probably better for him when I wasn't going to parties. I promised him that I would call if I started to get too lit. He smiled and gave me the classic "bro hug" complete with the slaps to the back. We then heard the doorbell and Calvin saying Bear had arrived. When we made it downstairs Bear and Calvin were talking football and I just rolled my eyes. Not that I don't like football, I do. I just don't talk about it as much as Bear and my brothers do.
Bear saw me and I swear did a double take.
"Damn dude you look nice" he said as Calvin was looking at me like I had replaced the brother he'd known all this time. I rolled my eyes again.
"You are already picking me up. Now you complimenting me on how I look? Don't you think that's a step too far? This isn't a date you know" I said and Zane laughed.
"Please, you'd be lucky to go out with me" he said giving me that patented Bear grin.
"No thanks" I countered. "I've heard what you do on dates and frankly I'm not interested in any of that" I said and topped it off with my sarcastic smile.
"Ha ha very funny" he countered, "Let's go smartass"
"Yeah" I said. "I wanna see Justice before things get jumpin". I was excited to see Justice again. I hadn't seen her in a few weeks since she went back to school. I liked talking to her.
We left and headed to the rich part of town. We talked about everything and nothing along the way. Hanging with Bear was so easy because we knew each other so well. The Mellow residence was a small mansion, a luxury home I think they're called. It was white with stone walls out front and a circular drive path in front of the house. They lived not that far from Bear's family. We arrived and the party was already bumpin.
Quite a few cars were scattered around the circular driveway in front of the house. I didn't see Drake's car but I did see Kenji's mom's Toyota with the two of them standing next to it looking very uncomfortable. I again felt bad about putting them in this situation. They looked very much out of their depth. Miriam had however let her hair down and I was surprised with how much of it there was. She could be a hair model.
We greeted them and Bear put on the charm to try to put them at ease. It worked. Well on Miriam it did.
Kenji was more or less still uptight but Bear would get him. He just had this way about him. We walked in to an assault of loud music and it was obvious that kids were drinking already as some were already kinda drunk.
Sean's house looked beautiful inside. Lots of glass doors, a huge formal room for entertaining. another huge room off to the right that I guess was for more informal gatherings like these parties. I could see through to the kitchen out the glass doors there clear to what looked like a huge back yard where I saw a rather large fountain.
We spied our host talking to Alicia Lake. I don't know why but I didn't like that girl. Sean saw us and smiled then Alicia saw us too. She smiled lustfully at Bear but when her eyes fell on me she rolled her eyes. Yeah the feeling is mutual bitch.
Sean excused himself from the bitch... I mean Alicia and made for us.
"Hey peeps glad you could make it" He said to all 4 of us yet his eyes stayed firmly on me for some odd reason. It kind of unnerved me a bit.
He finally looked away from me and took us all in as he started to talk again
"Mi casa es su casa" he intoned. I thought maybe he was already lit like a lot of his guests but he had a bottle of coke in his hand at the time and his eyes were normal as far as I could tell. His really green eyes.
"Thanks man. I'll be right back. Kind of thirsty" Bear said looking at me. I nodded my assent.
Sean told him where to find certain drinks and he went in the direction of the sodas. Miriam and Kenji tagged along with him suddenly attached to him. I don't blame them. Bear is very charismatic and can make friends fast. This unfortunately left me alone with Sean who had me in an eyelock and unnerving me again. He wasn't as tall as Bear at only about 6'2 and about 200 lbs but that could still be intimidating when you're 5'8 and 140 lbs.
What I was feeling wasn't fear though, but something else. Whatever it was I didn't like it.
He asked if this was my first party still with the stare. I sort of grunted a no cause it wasn't my first party. Just my first one at his house.
He then asked if I liked his place and I again kind of grunted an answer suddenly feeling uncomfortable. Especially since he then proceeded to put his arm across my shoulders and slowly lead me in the direction of his large living room. I knew then that he was planning to "Carrie" me now that Bear was sufficiently distracted I noticed by Alicia as I glanced in the direction he had gone. Miriam and Kenji were standing next to him being ignored by her but not Bear.
Sean surprised me though by taking a seat on the couch and pulling me down with him still with his arm around me and still talking. I tried to listen to him but I was really feeling strange now. He was so close to me that I could feel his body heat and he just kept talking. He was talking to me and smiling with those really good teeth and then it happened.
I looked up and saw her and something weird happened. Everything faded away briefly, and I suddenly felt at ease. Who is responsible for this response. Justice St. John is who. This girl was magic I was sure. There she was walking in laughing with Jessica while obviously at the same time trying to forget the fact that Drake existed on the same planet as her as he and Liberty were right behind them. It was subtle but you could tell.
I was about to get up when I noticed something. Sean had finally stopped talking and when I looked at him he was looking at... Justice. No he was gazing at her. I don't know why but that pissed me off for some reason. Who the hell did he think he was looking at my Justice... Did I say my Justice? I really needed to stop that.
I got up then and went toward them but the bastard was following me. Then I remembered he specially invited her and I got even more pissed off. I didn't know how much I was pissed until I reached them.
"Hey boo boo. What's wrong?" Liberty asked in her soothing voice. "Sean didn't do anything to you did he?" she continued, then cut him a quick glare.
They were all looking between Sean and me now each with concern except Drake who was now inching away from the group to talk to one of his teammates. Sean however was now looking between me and Justice with a weird look on his face. Justice broke the tension.
"Hey Trey. Long time no see" she said in that sweet voice so unlike Liberty's.
I was suddenly fine. See, magic.
"I'm fine. It's good to see you too. I've been meaning to call you but I got busy with school starting and all" I said smiling at her.
"It's no problem I was busy too. So you wanna dance? She asked and I definitely wasn't gonna say no.
We walked away to the dance floor from a smirking Jessica, a scowling Liberty and a subdued looking Sean. I know what you may be thinking and no. We've never dated and aren't now. She's just... so great. She has this effect on me that no other girl has. I smile more with her than anybody else, except maybe Bear. We danced and she talked and talked and I listened and smiled. I loved listening to her talk cause she liked all the same stuff as me. Robotics, comics, anime and manga. She was an even bigger geek and nerd than I am and I loved that. I glanced around the room at my friends.
Jessica still had this smirk like she knew what was going on with me and Justice but she was way off base.
Liberty was still scowling but trying to disguise it cause Drake was now standing with her.
He looked baffled. Like it was shocking a girl would actually wanna dance with me.
Miriam and Kenji were watching me with interest but were now also talking to some of Jessica's girlfriends.
Sean still looked subdued like someone had told him his favorite thing was gone.
Bear though. He looked... well I couldn't decipher the look on his face, but it vanished when Brandy Carlson walked up and intercepted Alicia as she headed back to him having left him to -I guess- get a beer. I liked this Brandy already. I would deem her worthy of being Bear's wife with just that action alone. I was already planning the wedding. I'm sorry I just don't like Alicia Lake. Don't know why.
After awhile I told Justice that I thought she should dance with Sean and she obliged. After all he did invite her and it wasn't fair for me to keep her to myself.
I decided that I needed some air so I found my way out the back to the spacious back yard where there were benches and bushes and flowerbeds and that fountain I spied in the center of all this. It was really beautiful back here. At least it would have been were there not a lot of drunk teenagers loitering around too. I sat on one of the secluded benches in the garden to just think. There was a cool breeze in the air as fall was almost upon us. I loved Pennsylvania in the fall. I was joined a bit later by Veronica Tyler of all people.
"Hey Trey. Glad Sean made the right decision" she said. She had a very nice voice and amazing greenish blue eyes. Like a mix of Bear and Sean's eyes. I was momentarily mesmerized by them. Yeah I had a thing for eyes.
"Uh, hey" I said dumbly. I was thinking again that I was about to get "Carrie'd". I just couldn't seem to let that go. She just sat back though and sighed. She also had a soda, a Sprite. What was up with some of these popular kids only drinking soda. Not that I had a problem with it. I thought it was cool some of them weren't getting trashed.
"Bear's great huh" she said with a easy smile
"Yeah he's an awesome guy" I said quite easily.
It was a full minute before I thought about her question and my automatic answer. I wondered at her motive for saying it. I looked over at her and she was still smiling. She stared into my eyes for a full minute before replying.
"Hmm" she said simply.
I was wondering what this was about when she stood up.
"Tell Bear I said hello would ya" she said before she walked back into the house.
I sat there for a while stumped by the brief encounter when the man of honor drew my attention as he walked up.
"Here you go" he said handing me a Root Beer, my favorite soda.
"Thanks" I said taking it and popping the top and taking a drink.
"Having a good time?" he asked taking a seat next to me.
"Yeah it's nice" I said enjoying the night with my best bud.
We sat there for a while just listening to the music inside. It was a kind of peaceful atmosphere here with Bear not talking. He had a peaceful expression on his face. That is until the gang flooded out the door. I noticed his gaze however was on Justice. I wondered what that was about but didn't comment
"Hey you two. Why you sitting out here" Liberty said
"Just taking a break" I said as I stood. Bear stood as well.
I noticed that he was standing kind of rigidly next to me and I wondered at it when just a minute ago he was relaxed and peaceful.
"You've found him now. Can we go back to the party now?" Drake asked clearly not happy he had to stop partying to look for little old me. Liberty slammed her right foot down on his left and I slyly smirked while he hopped in his right leg trying to shake off the pain. I noticed Justice was doing the same.
"Guys, this isn't the first party I've been to I'm fine you don't have to babysit me" I reasoned in a kind tone.
"See" Drake said. "He's a big boy. He can take care of himself" he added and Liberty repeated her earlier action, this time harder.
As Drake was hopping on one leg again I decided that he was right. I had to prove that I was fine without them.
"Look, let's go back inside" I said as I pushed them back inside. They protested but I ignored them.
I then smiled at them and walked off and was immediately accosted by Sean who started talking to me again a mile a minute. He again put his arm across my shoulders and led me back to the couch. We sat again and he continued babbling on and I was able to figure out he was talking about Justice.
When I figured this out I smiled at him deciding not to get mad anymore that he obviously liked her. When I did this he stopped and smiled back showing those pretty white teeth and I felt strange again. He continued smiling at me and looking at me and I was increasingly feeling weird but I couldn't put my finger on why. I was saved from his stare by Patrick Clarke, a teammate of his.
He walked up and spoke to Sean and glanced to me for a second before he looked away dismissively back to Sean. They have a lively conversation and it struck me as weird that Sean still had his arm around me. He was so close to me I could feel his body heat. I could smell his cologne which smelled good on him. I could smell the coke he was drinking on his breath as he laughed at something Patrick said. I needed to leave.
I stood abruptly, excused myself and left Sean and Patrick. I glanced back after putting a bit of distance between us and saw him glance at me. He smiled again and turned to Patrick who had taken my seat and they were talking. I noticed that Pat actually had a beer. After walking a few more steps I spied Liberty and Drake in a corner making out something fierce.
I then spied Justice engaged in a conversation with Kenji, Miriam, and strangely... Dale Simmons. He was one of Bear's teammates, and he wasn't so much as talking to them than standing awfully close to Miriam with a dopey grin on his face trying to keep up with what they were talking about which was obviously way over his head. The words "The jock and the geek" sounded in my head and I smiled. I then glanced a bit to the right and saw Bear talking to Veronica and those words sounded in my head again but louder this time.
I immediately looked to my right and took in Alicia standing in a corner glaring at Bear and Veronica as I heard Veronica laugh. Good, distraction. I decided to focus on her until those now horrible words shut the hell up. I heard Bear and Veronica laugh again and then Alicia rolled her eyes with a disgusted look on her face. I immediately decided that I wanted to be friends with Veronica Tyler.
I probably should have looked away because she look away from them and right at me. I then made a bitch move and glanced in Bear and Veronica's direction before looking back to her with a smirk. She then turned her glare on me and turn it up to full power as she rolled her eyes and stalked off. I guess she had plans of hooking up with Bear at this party. Well too bad bitch. Looks like Veronica was gonna beat her to it. Good. Veronica looked better than her anyway and my buddy deserved the best.
I turned around and ran immediately into a smirking Jessica.
"Well, did you enjoy your little battle with Alicia Lake" she said with a smile in her voice. She was probably the only person who knew how much I hated Alicia cause she shared the feeling.
See, Jessica tried out for cheerleading in the 9th grade but Alicia was weirdly co-captain even though she was also a freshman. Well anyway Alicia told her she was too fat to be on the team even though Alicia obviously weighed more than her at the time. Still does. I even overheard a later conversation between her and her co-captain a -at the time- Junior named Mira Lister where she said exactly that to Alicia. I remember quietly giggling at the offended look on her face at the time. So yeah we hated her, but Bear obviously already had her on his " I'm gonna screw you so hard" list so I hid my dislike of her from him. "You know it" I said smiling back at her.
"Here" she said as she handed me a bottle of what I saw was beer. Now I'll admit I hate beer. It tasted gross and I couldn't get why people drank it. "Don't worry it's flavored. It's actually pretty good" she said probably reading the look on my face.
She grabbed my hand and lead me to the dance floor. We danced and I drank the beer that was not bad. I somehow ended up with another one after I finished the first. I was soon feeling just fine and dancing with Jessica and having a good time. I was then dancing with Jessica and this dude from school who I vaguely knew and I was still having a good time.
I found out the guy's name was Billy when Jessica left for a few minutes and returned with 3 more bottles of the beer. We drained those bottles and started dancing again. I was now having a great time. I decided to not pay attention to the fact I was pressed against this dude I barely knew and instead focused on being pressed against Jessica. She smelled nice.
A few hours later the three of us were in Sean's family room sitting on the couch. Me in the middle with them both sitting extremely close to me. I didn't mind at all with Jessica but I barely knew this Billy guy. I decided to ignore it though and laid my head back as the two of them talked across me in slightly slurred speech. After a few minutes they both got up. Billy saying he was headed to the bathroom and Jessica headed I guess to get another beer. I was gonna beg off on having another one.
After about a minute a head leaned downed next to mine and I felt lips next to my right ear.
"Hey there dancing boy" a teasing voice said that sounded a lot like Veronica. I looked over and it was her with an easy smile on her face. "I had a good time talking to Bear. It got a lot more interesting though once you started dancing" she said in a knowing voice. Knowing what though?
"Huh" I was able to get out in my buzzed state.
"Don't worry about. You'll find out soon enough I'm sure" she said then kissed me on the cheek and lingered for a second. "Don't let Jessica get you too drunk now. See you at school" she added then stood up glanced over at something and then left.
I looked in the direction where she had looked and saw Bear and Sean. Sean was talking Bear's ear off but Bear was looking at me with an odd look on his face. I was too buzzed to try to decipher it though. I saw Jessica returning with 2 more bottles. This time though it was water. I was grateful as I was suddenly very thirsty
"What was that about with Veronica" Jessica asked also with an odd look on her face.
"I have no idea" I said honestly.
To be continued....
I hope you all enjoy this chapter. As you can probably tell, Justice is gonna be one of my favorite characters in this story.
I'll admit that I initially had no plans for Veronica aside from mentioning her in the first chapter. She didn't even speak in my original draft, but she somehow became a character and I'm gonna run with it for a bit.
This story will mostly be told from Trey's point of view, but I will be switching to other POVs from time to time. I already did with Bear and I will with others. Most of the characters introduced in chapter 0 will take the helm at some point but this is first and foremost Trey's story. I have a lot planned for these characters and I hope you all like it. This is my first attempt at writing a story so I could use the feedback. Send any comments good or bad to thestoryguy9783@gmail.com
