The Boy With the Emerald Eyes
Prologue
Tanner Rollins and his daughter Sarah walked along. Well, she walked, but he wheeled himself along. The night was dark as well as cloudy, and the rain hadn't come yet, but it was acting as if it would at any moment. Something was readying for a fall, but neither of them knew it yet.
"Thanks for dinner," Sarah said to Tanner as she walked behind him in case he needed her to take over and push him for a while.
"You're welcome," he said. "I really enjoyed coming down here to Sangger to visit our friends today as well as have dinner tonight."
They didn't live in the city of Sangger at that time, but they would be spending more time there over the coming days, weeks and months; they just didn't know it in that moment. They didn't know how much their lives would change though.
Sometimes they would take a Friday off and go from the small town in which they were living to eat dinner after visiting friends they had in the city. It was nice to get away for the day like that, and they both always came back home refreshed.
Sarah was 22, and was in college, though it was late May, and her classes were finishing up, so she would be off for the Summer.
Tanner had been raising Sarah since she was two years old when she had been sent to Foster Care by her parents who couldn't take care of her. Tanner had been working with the community for years, and one day when he had been at one of the foster care homes, specifically the one in which Sarah was placed, she looked up at him from where she had been lying among a pile of stuffed animals. Their eyes locked, and he hoped he could have her live with him. He didn't have much faith at that time as he was only 25, and though with some money coming in from a settlement from a medical mistake from several years ago, it wouldn't be much. It sure wouldn't be much if or when the money ran out, and he would have to go on disability, so he worried about the idea of how he would adopt a child in general and Sarah in particular.
Days after he saw her, he talked with his Aunt and Uncle who he was living with at the time, and over the coming days and weeks he started looking for work out in the community. He began making connections with other people with disabilities, and soon was working, and after spending more time with Sarah, and going through the appropriate processes, he was in addition to building up his bank account, also on his way to adopting Sarah.
It didn't take long for everything to become official, and several months later just before Sarah was about to turn three, and just before the year ended, the process was complete and she was now his daughter. He couldn't have been more happier, and his Aunt and Uncle were as equally happy for him!
As they went along their way, Tanner wheeled along listening to Sarah talk about how work was going, and as she finished talking, they were moving in to a more brightly lit section of the city of Sangger.
"Oh God," Sarah said pretending to gag. "The Ritch Bitch District."
"Oh come on," Tanner said smirking at her. "They're not all that bad."
"Yeah, I know," she replied. "Still though, you have enough of them that have enough fur coats that you would think they murdered three forests worth of animals to get it, and the diamonds they wear on their fingers, especially the ladies. You know they had to spend only but maybe five minutes tops on their backs for those. Sure sucks to be them."
"Man, you are cynical tonight," Tanner said laughing as they went past a jewelry store with lights inside of floor-to-ceiling windows illuminating diamonds, sapphires, rubies and several emeralds.
"I've been through this area before, and have had to deal with a few of these people, and I'll say this," she began. "They act like if you're not even wearing a diamond-studded watch that you should just crawl back under whatever rock you came out of. Besides, I have to work with a couple of women who act just like some of the people here, and to hear them talk about people, especially minorities. You know how they are. You've stopped in to work sometimes, and I don't like how they've treated you."
"They speak to me rather well," Tanner said.
"It's the looks they give you," she answered. "You haven't noticed them?"
"I have," he said.
"Why don't you ever call them out on their Ableist Bullshit?" she asked.
"You mean so they can get that sickeningly-sweet tone in their voice, ask me what I'm talking about then assure me with even more disgustingly-sweet charm that I was mistaken, and that they truly do care about how I'm doing? No thanks," Tanner said smiling. "I appreciate you looking out for me, and I really do mean that. I just would rather fight Ableism that really does deeply effect the lives of my fellow disabled brothers and sisters is all."
"I get what you mean," she said.
As they went past the jewelry store, they moved in to the residential areas, and were soon passing gated communities, and they were passing one of the houses that was almost a many-mansion. They were coming up close to where it sat, and Sarah could see movement out of the corner of her right eye.
"Dad!" she said getting worried. "Do you see,,,!"
Her words were cut off when she turned her head and that's when she saw movement for sure. From the side of the house they just started going past, a shadow was falling towards a gathering of trees, and then a flood light flashed on blinding them both for a second.
"Oh my god!" Tanner yelled. "It's a body!"
Sarah dialed 9-11, and soon paramedics, police and even a couple of firemen were on the scene. Sarah and Tanner by this time had gotten close to where the body was as the vehicles were pulling up, and they saw that the figure's face was covered in blood. There was a swelling that was on the left side of the figure's head, and the legs were turned at unnatural angles.
As they took in the rest of the scene, they saw glittering things that as they looked closer turned out to be fragments of broken glass. Then Sarah looked up where a figure stood, then it was gone. She was shocked! She wondered fearfully if that was the person who threw this person through the window just now?
Tanner and Sarah were soon approached by two police officers as well as three paramedics.
"Do you guys have any idea of what happened here?" the first officer named Carson asked.
"I just saw movement out of the corner of my eye," Sarah said. "Then we both looked and saw the person over there fall."
"That's all we know," Tanner said.
As they talked to Officer Carson, the three paramedics slowly lifted the figure from the tree they were hanging from, and had the paramedics not gotten there sooner than the person would have fallen all the way to the ground, and would have possibly died for sure.
"We'll need to take formal statements from you both," Officer Carson said. "We'll do that soon, but we need to get whoever this is medical attention now, and we need to get in to this house immediately."
The three paramedics lifted the figure on to a board in to which their neck was immobilized. After doing their best to clean away the blood from the person's face, they saw that it was a boy. His face was bruised, his nose looked like it had been broken, and they looked closer at his legs, and saw what looked like fractures, and one of the other paramedics felt them.
"We'll need to get X-rays," he said. "But I think his legs were broken, and it looks like his knee caps were dislocated. I don't know how this happened though; possibly before or after the fall."
As he finished speaking, he turned to see the police half-walking half-dragging another boy out of the house.
"I want a fucking lawyer!" the boy yelled. "I know my fucking rights you gun-carrying Cock Sucker. My dad's going to have your,,,!"
"Your dad isn't going to have shit!" Carson yelled as he shoved the boy in to the police car in which he and his partner Officer Daniels had been riding when they caught the call. "Now get in there and shut the hell up! I read you your rights, and so why not do me a favor and exercise that first part of your Maranda Rights and remain silent. In short, just shut the fuck up! You're already in trouble as it is. We'll talk to you once we get down to the station. We'll call your parents from there!"
"Fuck you Pig!" the boy said aiming a hateful look directly at Officer Carson.
"Yeah, that's really going to help your case," Carson replied coolly. "Hope you like prison food kid, cause if you did what I suspect you did, then you're going to be getting mounds and mounds of it. More than you can stand. You think I'm playing with you Punk!"
"Go fuck yourself Asshole! That Sissy little Fag got what he deserved!"
"I'll ignore that until your parents and attorney get to the station to meet us," Carson said. "We'll be going there here soon."
On the way to the hospital, the boy's heart stopped three times requiring the medical team to get it going again. They also continued trying to get him to respond to their questions of who he was, but he wasn't saying anything. They suspected he was in a coma, and they hadn't had a chance to look for a wallet, but as they pulled in to the ambulance bay, one of the paramedics carefully moved the boy to see if he could find a wallet which he did in the left back pocket of his shorts.
"His name is Dakoda Langley," the paramedic announced. "The birth date on his ID would put him around 14, and I found his parent's phone numbers on another card. We'll need to call them."
Many tests were ran on Dakoda all through the night, and there was bleeding in the back and left side of his brain, as well as cuts by splinters of bone when his head smashed against the railing of the balcony. They cut in to these same areas damaging the speech centers of his brain, as well as damaging the Occipital Lobe.
Dakoda's legs had been broken, but that had happened before the fall when he was still inside the house, but the doctors had no way of knowing that yet. There was also bleeding and severe swelling in both legs, and the doctors worked to bring down the swelling, but part of the problem was that the bones when they broke caused the sharp parts of the fractures to cut through the skin, and over the next few days infection would set in, and while they worked to save his legs, the bacteria would leave his leg muscles weakened severely, but the doctors would find this out over time, not right away. For now though, Dakoda was in a deep coma just as the paramedics suspected, and the doctors though encouraged by Dakoda's eyes reacting to light, were still fearful for the assessments used to track a patient's level of unconsciousness were indicating that he was deep within his coma, and so it would be difficult to tell what life would be like for him if he ever regained consciousness. Now the doctors would have to do their usual testing and maintaining of his care, and would also have to wait and see.
Chapter 1
Dakoda Langley
Trees glided by as I sat in the back of the van listening to my Ipod. We had been driving for about three hours at that point, and we still had about one more hour to go.
It was now August of 2021, and I had been out of the hospital and living with Tanner and Sarah for the last two months after the adoption went through. I had woken from my coma around January of this year; it was a shock when I tried to move, and found that my right hand was weak, and that I could only grasp the lightest of objects such as a paper cup, or a pencil. I also noticed that my voice had a slightly slurred quality to it like someone who had suffered a stroke of which speech complications had been a consequence. For me, that was what had happened. When I fell from the balcony the year before, the fractures to my scull caused bleeding in my brain which caused several complications some of which are permanent. My speech will always be slightly hard to understand, my ability to count past six is always going to be lacking, as well as my ability to read text properly. This is all from not just the bleeding in to my brain, but the bone splinters which shredded parts of my Occipital Lobe and parts of the left side of my brain.
An infection set in just as the doctors feared in my legs due to the nature of the fractures which were Compound Fractures. The nerves in my legs and feet weren't damaged, but the muscles were infected, and bacteria dissolved enough of the tissue that my legs were weak enough so that I would have to use a wheelchair for the rest of my life. Physical therapy helped with the weakening of my muscles in my legs to not get any worse, but there wouldn't be any improvements, and unless a miracle happened then I would be for the rest of my life as I am now.
It took a lot of adjusting for me to begin to feel like I could live again. Tanner stopping by both while I was in a coma, and staying by my side along with Sarah being there was what really helped with me working through a lot of the difficult emotions as well as the physical pain with which I had to deal in those first few months.
As I continued working with the doctors, and as I continued talking with Sarah and Tanner, I was becoming more and more comfortable with them, and in May of this past year they asked me about where I wanted to live. By that time I was stable enough so that I could live in a normal house with the exceptions of having the various adaptations for someone who's in a wheelchair, and there was also the fact that my family had disowned me, and didn't even wait for me to come out of my coma to let me know that. When left alone with me, they talked about how they were done with me, and they never addressed me personally, but they didn't have to. A part of me could sense their hate, and could hear what they were saying.
When Tanner and Sarah asked if I wanted to come and live with them, I had to make sure that they really meant it. After a couple of days of thinking about it, I agreed. We started the adoption process, and it went surprisingly fast. I began living with them in June of this year as I said, and having them there was helping with my mental state as well as with my ability to trust, though being able to trust other people completely would still take some time.
The one thing that I was currently trying to get used to was the fact that we were moving. We were moving to the city of Sangger, and I had been experiencing a lot of anxiety about the move. Tanner had gotten a job as a counselor at a really well-respected counseling center where he could counsel both kids with disabilities as well as kids who were LGBT, or who had both identities. He explained what was going to be happening, but still wanted to make sure that I felt comfortable with all that was going on, as well as make sure that I knew everything that would be happening. The job offer had been given to him towards the end of June, and he took that time to explain everything to me. I was worried at first, but after talking with both him and Sarah, I felt better about everything.
The house to which we would be moving was one behind which was vast amounts of woods, and there was a house across the street from our new soon to be occupied house. He didn't know much about the people living in the house across from it, but he hoped that we could meet them at some point. We had been to see the new house a couple of weeks before, and I really loved the large living room, the floor-to-ceiling windows as well as the cozy-looking bedrooms. Fortunately for me there were no second or third floors, so I would be able to get around the house with it being on all one floor. I had already picked out my room which was the first one at the beginning of the hall, and Sarah's room would be across from mine with Tanner's being down the hall from us. I figured that it would be a really good experience for all of us once we arrived at our new home.
I had come out of my thoughts as my Ipod had continued playing on. I had been listening to the Litourgiya Album by the Black Metal band Batushka. I had found them online a few weeks ago, and liked what I heard. I had that album, and also had downloaded Night Wish's latest album Human Nature which I was also enjoying as well.
As I looked around after pausing my music, I saw that the busy streets and rows of buildings were giving way to large groups of bushes, trees and lush long lines of grass. The day was warm; the sun was out with no clouds in the sky. It was really pretty out, and I enjoyed that kind of weather, but I also loved the Winter time; I couldn't wait until the change in seasons.
"Tanner," I called up front after taking out my ear buds.
"How's it going Dakoda?" he asked looking back at me.
"I was just wondering where we were," I said. "It looks like we're getting close to the house."
"We're just about there," he answered. "Do you need anything before we get there?"
"No," I'm okay," I replied.
"I don't need anything either," Sarah added. "Are you excited about moving in to our new house?"
"I'm really looking forward to it," I responded.
I was too. I felt a sense of calm come over me when I came in to the house for the first time, and especially after looking at the woods in the back of it.
"I feel the same way," she said.
We continued driving on, and the sight of trees got more and more frequent. It felt like we were going to the country, and leaving the city behind. I felt that sense of calm again, and I sat back after putting a way my Ipod and had my head turned to the side so I could see all of the trees, flowers and fields drift by as Tanner drove us to our new home.

Caleb Henderson
I stood on the front porch of my house watching as the moving vans pulled in to the driveway of the house across the street from us. I had heard that someone had bought the house several weeks ago after a year of it standing unoccupied. It was kept clean for all this time which was really good. Last thing my family and I wanted was our own little family of bugs, stray cats or the occasional rat coming on our property or in to our house because of careless Assholes not giving a damn about the place and just letting any vermin occupy the house.
I hadn't heard much about who bought the house, but I hoped they would be a good neighbor or good neighbors with whom I could get along as well as the rest of my family.
I should start by introducing myself. I'm Caleb Henderson, and at that time I was 15 years old. I had turned 15 at the beginning of 2021, and my family and I originally came from England, but I was born here. It was funny though, though I was born here in America, I didn't have an American accent, but a full British accent like my parents. I was the only child, and enjoyed making friends as well as reading, listening to music and just enjoying life. I had a few friends I'd hang around with from time to time, and they were supportive of me, especially with me being gay. I was glad about that, because it would have been hard to be gay, open about it and not have their acceptance as well as their support.
My parents knew I was gay when I came out to them earlier last year. That's another story for another time, but I had a hard time with trying to get up the courage to tell them. I was glad when they were supportive and accepting of me though, and that made things easier.
I stood there watching as the men exited their vans and started carrying out boxes and furniture. I stepped off of the porch to go and see if they needed any help when my mom called from the kitchen.
"Caleb, could you come in to the kitchen and help set the table?"
"I'll be right there mom," I called back and turned around walking towards the front door of our house.
Once back in the kitchen I stepped up to the counter. I helped with chopping carrots for the salad as my mom got out meat and cheese for the sandwiches. We were going to have a salad and a sandwich for lunch as we sometimes did. It was always nice to do that, and we would talk about how things were going while dad was at work. My mom worked as well, but had the day off. She was a doctor at Sangger University, and my dad was a counselor at one of the LGBT youth centers close to the hospital. They both enjoyed their work, and I was really proud of them and the job they did with the people they helped.
"I'm looking forward to meeting our new neighbors," my mom said as I finished chopping the carrots.
"So am I," I replied. "I hope they're really nice. Were you able to learn anything more about them?"
"I did hear from your dad this morning when he called that the guy who's moving in is a counselor who's going to be coming to work at his center to do counseling with people, and the guy has a daughter and a son, but that's all I know."
"That sounds really good," I answered.
We sat down after the food was ready and ate while talking about how things were going with me, and about how things were going for my mom, then after lunch was over I went out in to our garage to finish a carving project I had been working on for the last few days. It was a carving of a nature scene I was finishing the last few details on, then I would be painting in the carved areas to form a painted picture. I couldn't wait to show it to my parents, as well as to any of my friends who would be interested in seeing it. I sat down to finish up, and started adding the finishing touches. I then thought for a moment about the family that would soon be moving in to the house across the street from us. I wondered about them, and what they would be like, then I got in to doing the last bit of carving.
Author's Notes
I hope you enjoy this first chapter of my new story. This will be a slow-building story like my other ones, so I hope you enjoy the developing storyline. I also hope that everyone is continuing to stay safe, and hopefully things will slow down with this virus sometime soon. Everyone have a good evening, and I'll see everyone in Chapter Two.
