Chapter 11
I was in the middle of one the best dreams. In the dream, Luke and Pauly was both taking turns licking and sucking on my pecker while Sammy was pluggin' my butt and Daniel was on the other end pluggin' my throat. I was just layin' there on fire with all the jitters going through me when, all of a sudden, I was cumming, which woke me up in real life to the fact that my peter was balls deep in Pauly's throat and I was flinging ropes of sticky juice into his stomach. I forced myself to stay still, and waited while Pauly carefully squeezed my peter at the base and pulled up, stripping all the remaining juice he could out of it. I barely cracked my eyelids open and saw Luke watching the show from the other side of me. As soon as Pauly was satisfied that my satchel was empty, he crawled over me to get to Luke, who was waiting for him with his peter in his hand. Luke laid back and Pauly went to work draining him. I got up on one elbow and watched him going at it. Luke winked at me in the moonlight. A few minutes later Luke sucked in his breath and went stiff and I heard Pauly kinda sputter a little, but he didn't lose a drop. He went on to strip Luke's peter like he did mine, then crawled back across me and laid back down. I could see his little spike was still hard as Chinese algebra so, taking pity on him I slid down and sucked on him. I barely got started when he went into his fit, thrashing around. He still couldn't make any juice but he sure seemed to enjoy getting the feelin'.
We all went back to sleep until I woke up to the sound of Mark hammering on the roof up above me.
"'Bout time y'all woke up!" he said.
With me and Luke helping on the roof, and Pauly bringing up supplies, the work was going pretty fast. By lunchtime, we had finished that side of the roof and started working on the other one. What we weren't expecting was when our sister Mary pulled up in the wagon to bring us lunch. Momma sent us the whole works. We all ate like piggies at a trough, and each of us gave her a big hug along with the empty basket. We rested a few minutes to let our food settle, then went back to work. We'd been at it about a hour or so when here come Daniel and his older brother Matt. They pitched in to help, and we got the roof done by the time the sun set.
"Our pa said he's done planting for the season" Matt said, "if you want it, we'll stick around and help you finish up tomorrow."
"Thanks, that'd be great" Mark said, "but you'll have to share blankets, we ain't got any extra."
"I'll share with Johnny" Daniel said. He turned and winked at me.
"Well, Matt, I reckon since you're older, you can share with me" Mark said.
We settled down and talked into the night. Pauly collapsed first and me and Luke tucked him in. Afterward, me and Daniel decided to go on an bed down. Luke followed shortly after, and finally, the two older boys turned in.
Couple of hours later, Daniel woke me up grinding into my butt. When I stirred, he whispered "Look over yonder" and pointed to the corner where Mark and his brother were laying. I could make out Mark laying with his upper back and head kind of propped on the wall and in front of him, the covers were going up and down. Clearly, Matt was sucking on Mark's peter. Before now, I never knew my brother to cotton to activities with other fellers, but he sure wasn't putting up any fight.
"Matt does it real good" Daniel whispered, "that's where I learned it."
From the quiet little whimpering sounds Mark was making, I bet that Matt did `do it good'. Daniel kept trying to get into my drawers. I told him we ain't doing that here. He looked disappointed but stopped and laid back with his big old peter standing straight up. Pauly was on the prowl for goober again tonight, so Daniel didn't have to wait long before Pauly latched on like a calf on its momma's teat. As he finished Daniel up, Daniel looked at me and whispered "Dang! He's nearly as good as you."
Early in the morning, we finished up chinking the logs. Mark and Matt did the chinking and the rest of us dug clay and brought it for `em. By lunch today, there was nothing else we could really help him with. His soon-to-be daddy-in-law had ordered real glass windows to be carted in from Asheville, so he was waiting on them. I wanted to slip off with Daniel, but our daddy hadn't told us planting was done yet so we had to go on back home. I got to admit, I was kinda jealous leaving him and his brother alone with Mark after what I saw last night.
We got back to the house and told momma how it went, she was glad. She told us that daddy was trying to work the back fields by hisself, so we ran on out there quick as we could. Daddy was not getting much done alone, he'd run a few feet of furrow, stop and plant some seed, then go back and plow some more. He was glad to see us come back. He gave me the seed bag and took off with the plow and we dropped in behind him and set the seed. We worked up `til it was too dark to see anymore. We got that field done and part of the other one. All we lacked was a little over half of the second field. Once that was done in the morning, planting would be done for us too.
We got up early and by ten o'clock we had everything finished. We helped daddy get everything back to the barn and cleaned off and he told us "Go on and see your friends!" We ran back over to Mark's place first but Mark said the brother had left yesterday evening. We doubled back and headed for the Moore's. Matt, Donny and Davey were on the porch but Donny said Daniel went off somewhere by hisself. I left them and headed for our cave. Soon as I got there, I could tell something was wrong. I found blood on the "steps" going to the cave, the trail of blood led around the back of the hill into some bushes. I peeked through and I could see Daniel laying in a pool of blood, a huge gash in his side. He had been attacked by a bear. I knew it was a matter of time before the bear came back so I ran up the hill to the cave and grabbed one of the blankets and went back down and cinched his torso with it. I half carried him to the water and washed as much of the blood off as I could, then lifted him again and slowly more or less carried him in the direction of Grandfather's cabin.
When we got just up the hill from the cabin I was wearing out. I started screaming out "SAMMY! EDUDA! HELP ME!!!" I was now dragging Daniel toward the cabin when Sammy saw me and ran to us and picked Daniel's limp body up over his shoulder and carried him the rest of the way. Grandfather looked very serious and if I read him right, worried. He spoke to Sammy in Cherokee and Sammy set off running faster than a deer through the forest. Grandfather told me to go fetch some more water while he set about taking the blanket and ruined clothing off Daniel. I was crying so hard I couldn't hardly see how to get to the well. I went to wipe my eyes on my arms and blood smeared across my face, causing me to cry even harder. I made it back to the cabin as Sammy and another old man rode up on a horse. This man didn't look as old as the grandfather, but I could tell he was somebody important by the way the others acted around him.
When he came into the house, grandfather spoke quickly, telling the man what the situation was. Sammy said the man was called `Brother to Ravens", he was something like a doctor. He and grandfather hovered over my friend and the man washed his hands with a bottle of whiskey then ran his finger into the gash that ran from just below Daniel's left nipple, all the way to his navel. His finger never went deeper than the first knuckle. He turned to Eduda and said something. Sammy said "He's lost blood but is lucky that it's a flesh wound, the bear didn't get deep enough to damage the organs inside. The two men washed out the gash with the alcohol and "Brother", as I was calling him, started sewing up the gash with a needle and horsehair. It seemed to take forever for him to finish, it probably was really about two hours. While "Brother" was doing that, grandfather was boiling up a tea of several things. He said it would take away the pain and keep the wound from `turning'.
I walked out and sat on the porch, still crying. Sammy came out and sat beside me and pulled my head to his chest and held me while I sobbed.
Darkness came and even though I knew my daddy would blister my hide, there was no way I would leave Daniel's side. Sammy offered to go to our families and let them know what had happened. Some time, late in the night, Matt and Daniel's daddy showed up. I was on my knees beside the bed holding Daniel's hand, but had fallen asleep praying. They tried to move me but I would not be moved. A little later, my daddy and Mark showed up. The Indian men made us leave and they stood by Daniel chanting very softly. Mr. Moore and my daddy built a little fire in the stone ring in the yard and we all sat around it, waiting for dawn.
I woke up with my head in my daddy's lap. Grandfather and Brother were sitting on the porch, one on each side of the door; both sound asleep sitting bolt upright. Sammy came out of the cabin over to me. He's sweating Johnny, the fever has broken, he may be okay. Brother heard Sammy talking and got up and went inside. When he came back out, he said in broken English "Yellow hair want you", pointing at me. I jumped up and ran into the cabin.
"Johnny, they said you saved my life" Daniel croaked.
"I done the same as you'd a done for me if it was reversed" I said, squeezing his hand.
He took a breath and winced with the pain.
"Elijah says it will be a while before I'll be fighting bears again" he rasped.
"I'll be with you no matter how long it takes" I said, "who's Elijah?"
"The one with the medicine pouch" he said. So, I reckoned Brother's white name was Elijah.
"Just rest Daniel, I'll be here" I said.
Mr. Moore came in and said "Son, Elijah says you shouldn't be moved so him and Sam are making you a cot so the old grandfather man can watch you `til you can be moved." Then he looked at me and said "John, we all owe you a debt I don't know if we can ever repay."
"Y'all don't owe me nothing" I said "I love Daniel and I'd give my life to save him."
Mr. Moore studied my face for a long time, turning things over in his head. A lot of things were said but not spoken between us. He finally looked at me like the pieces of the puzzle were falling in place and said "I believe you would, son, I truly believe you would." He lightly slapped me on the back and walked back out to talk with my father. They walked out to the edge of the woods and it looked like a heated conversation. Mr. Moore finally took my daddy by the shoulders and said something, looking him directly in the eye. I saw daddy's shoulder kinda slump and I knew that Mr. Moore told him about me and Daniel. I was pretty sure they both knew now, I wished I knew how my daddy would react. Daddy went over and spoke to Mark and then he left back in the direction of home.
I just kept holding on to Daniel's hand and sat there like a tree in the forest.
