NOW ON WITH THE SHOW!!!
THAT DAY
By ShyWriterBoy
Chapter 2 My head was swimming as I floated through the warm comfortable nothingness. Where am I? I thought as my eyes slowly opened on fuzzy light filled world. As everything began to come into focus I could see nothing but light.
Suddenly the face of a man appeared before me. He was saying something to me but I could not understand what he was saying. What I did understand however, was that this man was nothing short of breathtaking. Beautiful blonde hair, gorgeous eyes and as the bright light shown from behind him he looked quite angelic...angelic? Wait, maybe I am dead, maybe he IS an angel. If that is the case I am happy to be wherever I am, as long as he is there with me.
I closed my eyes to process and savor this new reality when it all hit me like a ton of bricks. All at once my head was killing me, the familiar smell of the hospital filled my senses and I could hear people shouting all around me. Based on the voices I heard there was a room full. I could hear Sylvia, Gina (Oh god), my patient Josh and a new voice that I could not recognize. They were all shouting at once so I could not make out exactly what they were saying. My eyes were still closed and I wanted to keep them that way. I don't know whether it was because my head hurt too badly or I did not want to see the chaos that I was hearing.
Finally I relented and slowly opened my eyes. The warm welcoming light I previously saw had been replaced by the glaring and often unfriendly hospital lights. It took some time to come into focus again, but when I did I was welcomed with the same beautiful face that I saw before. I sat there for a minute just taking in his face, so flawless, so perfect. Noticing that I was staring, he smiled warmly and I felt a warm tingling sensation flow like a wave through my body.
"Hey there, how are you feeling?" He said still smiling.
His voice sent shivers through my spine. I was completely entranced by him. Like a moth attracted to a flame, I was dumbfounded. In my stupor I looked at him and asked, "Am I dead? Have I gone to heaven?"
It was at that time that my being conscious had dawned on the rest of the people in the room as I heard Gina Squeal to my right "CCCooooodddyyyyy!!! You're awake"
Still staring at the man in front of me, I sighed and said, "Nope, I'm in HELL!!"
In one swift move Gina was at my side pushing that angel of a man nearly off the bed, and was fawning all over me. Grabbing my hand she started cooing, "Oh Cody darling, I was so scared for you. I heard all the commotion and made my way in here and saw the scene. Immediately I rushed in here and to your side. Is there anything you need, anything I can do?"
I was aghast at her audacity and rudeness. Not only had she crossed the line in her actions, I could not believe her behavior towards the blonde headed man.
With rage in my eyes I quickly snapped my hand out of hers, "First of all, who the hell do you think you are treating this man like that. Second, YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED IN THIS ROOM, why are you here? And third, the best thing for you to do is get the fuck away from me. I do not need anything from you nor do I want anything from you, AND I NEVER WILL!!"
The look on her face was priceless. You would have thought I slapped her. Unmoving however, she sat there and stared at me.
"How could you dare treat me that way after all I have done for you?" She said with coldness to her voice. "Why do you say such things to me? I'm just trying to be there for you. We belong together. I am not leaving!!"
I opened my mouth to respond when I heard, "LIKE HELL YOUR NOT LEAVING!!"
I look over to my right and will never forget what I saw. Sylvia, who had witnessed the whole thing, had had about enough, and boy you could tell. She is never the type to get angry and yell. She is always the calm one. But when she is forced to that point, you better duck and cover cause the proverbial shit is about to hit the fan.
"I will not sit here another minute and listen to crap, Gina. You're acting like a complete idiot and Cody is right, you have neither the clearance nor the need to be in this room. You have 4.5 seconds to leave this room, or I will have a talk with the head of Volunteer Services and discuss your need to even be volunteering at this hospital."
Everyone, including Gina, sat there stunned. I don't think I have ever heard Sylvia get this enraged bout anything and no one dare say a word.
Without a word, Gina stood up, looked at me, then over to Sylvia, and headed for the door. She stopped at the door turned to me and said "This is far from over Cody. I will get even with you for this and I WILL get what I want."
Sylvia cleared her throat loudly and pointed towards the door. Gina glared at her and quietly left.
I wanted to start applauding loudly for what I had just witnessed but the throbbing pain in my head was too much and I let out a groan and closed my eyes.
"I can't believe her nerve," Sylvia said coming over to the bed. "That is that last thing that you need to worry about right now. How's your head baby-boy?"
"Can't you just kill me now? That is how my head is" I whined.
"Here take these for your head," said handing me some large pills. "You probably have a mild concussion. Dr. Edwards wanted me to come get him when you were awake. Sit tight and I will go see if I can speed him up a little."
Sylvia left the room leaving me and the blonde man alone. He moved up closer to me on the bed and I scanned the room for Josh but he was nowhere to be found. I looked over to the beautiful blonde, still taken by his beautiful features, and sheepishly asked? "Um, no offense, but who are you?"
Still with that unwavering smile he very politely replied "My name is Lance, I am a band mate of J.C.'s."
"Wait," I asked, confused. "Who is Josh?"
Lance started laughing, "Again let me apologize. J.C. is Josh. He shortened his name for the group. My real name is James but that is reserved for good friends and family. I go by Lance for the band. It's actually my middle name. It all can get kind of confusing."
"Oh thank god!" I said with a sigh of relief. "I thought for a minute there that my brain really DID get scrambled when I hit my head. Speaking of hitting my head, where is the new Heavyweight Champion anyway?"
"When you were knocked unconscious, he panicked. Josh does not do well with hospitals anyway, so when he saw you go down and knew that he caused it, he panicked, yelled for me. When everyone came into the room he just kind of stood there, watching and pacing the floor. When you finally came to, he disappeared. I think he feels awful about what he did."
My heart instantly broke when I heard Lance say that. To think that Josh was taking this whole situation so badly, and panicked like he did, made me feel guilty. It is just me I thought to myself no one should get that worked up over little old me. Shit like this happens frequently to me. I'm used to it. I'm so not worth worrying about. (Ok I know I have issues, but when you have lived a life like mine, some issues are harder to work through than others. I'm surviving and that is all that matters.)
"Lance," I said trying to get up. "I have to go find him and talk to him." The problem was, the second I tried to get up my head told me that that was a very bad idea. I got very light headed and fell back onto the mattress holding my head.
"I don't even think so." Lance said getting up. "I will go find him for you. You just lay here and relax. Are you comfortable? Do you need anything while I'm gone?"
"A sledgehammer or something to knock me completely out would be heavenly. I don't know if I can stand this headache much longer."
"Just think of something beautiful." He said with a smile. "Take yourself to a happy place and try to concentrate on that. It works for me when I get a bad headache. It may not make the pain go away, but it does make it easier to bear."
Think of something beautiful huh? Do you think it would be too foreword to tell him that I would be thinking of him? HELLO, WAKE UP CODY, STOP THINKING LIKE THAT. You know nothing about this man so stop before you make a bigger ass of yourself.
"Thanks Lance, I will try that." I replied as Dr. Edwards came into the room.
"Well I am going to go try and find Josh. I will be back shortly." With that Lance smiled his hypnotic smile and left the room.
"WOW," I said out loud, causing a confused look on Dr. Edwards face. I have never met or seen anyone like Lance before in my life. I don't think that I have felt my heart beat that fast EVER!!
Of course I could not tell any of this to Dr. Edwards, so to alleviate his confusion I tried to play it off as casually as possible. "Sorry Doc, I was referring to this enormous pain in my head."
"Cody, Cody, Cody." Dr. Edwards said sarcastically. "When I hired you on here and told you to get into your work, I did not literally mean to have that much of a knock out time of it."
"Oh you so funny, funny man." I said in my worst Chinese accent. "Just do your magic and make it stop, OK."
Dr. Edwards, laughing, gave me the whatsoever, checking my vitals, my breathing and making sure I did not break anything on my body or in the room on the way down. When he was finished he looked at me and said, "Well, short of knocking you out completely, there is not much more I can do."
"I'm all for being knocked out completely. Where do I sign?" I said still holding my head in my hands.
"You know just as well as I do, Cody, that I can't do that. You may have a concussion so I need you to be as awake as possible. I want you to stay at least overnight for observation. I will give you some more medicine to dull the pain. You are allowed to sleep, however, a nurse will be in to wake you up every two hours to make sure your ok"
"Oh alright doc, if you insist." I replied.
"I will send Sylvia in to get you settled and I'll be back later tonight to check on you. Try to get some rest." With that, Dr Edwards left.
I laid there and wanted to cry. This day had been one of the worst I have had in a long long time. First I walk in to a lobby full of people, I have had 3 run in's with Gina, been knocked unconscious and now I have to spend the night in the hospital. I closed my eyes and pleaded to myself Please, Please, Please, let at least one thing go right today.
It was at that moment that Lance came back with Josh in tow. My eyes were still closed when they walked into the room and I heard Josh gasp, "Oh My God, Lance, is he.dead?"
"No Josh, I am not dead." I said smiling and opening my eyes. "Your punch had some power behind it, but I don't even think that you are that powerful."
A wave of relief washed over Josh as he realized that I was still there. Once it sunk in that I was ok, he immediately hung his head in shame and it, again, broke my heart.
"Josh, stop. You in no way shape or form meant for this to happen. People react in different ways when dealing with shots and needles and blood. Granted, I have never had anyone completely knock me out before, but I hold no grudges and I am not mad at you in any way. I will survive and life will go on. So please, for my sake, stop worrying. I'm not the type to worry over anyway."
That last comment caused a look of confusion on both of their faces. Maybe I shouldn't have said it, but it was one of those things that escape the lips before you stop to think what you said.
They came over, pulled up some chairs, and sat next to the bed. The confused look had left Josh's face but he still looked hurt. Lance, however, was quick to speak.
"You're not worth worrying about?" He said with a stern look on his face. "I know that I don't know you at all, but I don't ever want to hear you say something like that again. You seem like a wonderful person and you deserve to be just as happy as anyone."
Well, there goes my heart again. Boy this guy is good.
"I'm sorry you guys," I said with a frown. "It has been one of those days that seems like nothing is going right. It's just hard to stay positive sometimes."
"Well keep trying, because life is too short to waste it away worrying about the small stuff." He said patting my leg. The touch of his hand sent electricity through my body. I could sense he felt it too cause he jumped slightly at the touch.
Lance sat down next to Josh as Josh ask, "Cody, I still feel really bad about what happened. Would you allow me to make it up to you? I want to give you tickets and backstage passes to our show on Thursday. As well as take you to a nice dinner for all the trouble I've caused."
"Josh, that is not necessary. It was an accident and you have nothing to apologize for. Besides, I don't want you spending all your money on."
The loud clearing of the throat and the stern look on Lances face stopped me from finishing that last comment. This is obviously going to be harder than I thought, regarding me higher than I have in the past, and Lance is not going to let me get away with shit.
I rolled my eyes and replied, "Ok, Ok, I'm sorry. I won't finish that sentence."
"Thank You," Lance smiled.
"Look you two, it's a very thoughtful gesture, but I'm going to be ok. I have to stay here in the hospital overnight for observation, and then I'm going to take the rest of the week off. That's plenty of time to get back into the groove of things and be back to 100% by Monday."
"You are going to have the rest of the week off?" Lance asked.
I nodded a yes
"Then it's settled. Josh, Joey, another band mate of ours, and I will pick you up for dinner tomorrow night at 7. If I may get your phone number so I can call you ahead of time with the details. We will also plan on you being in attendance at the concert on Thursday. Before you even start, there is no room for discussion on this, you are going and that is final."
Dumbfounded again at his beauty I uttered another audible "WOW."
"What was that for?" Josh asked.
Afraid of embarrassing myself I had to again quickly come up with some sort of answer.
"I guess I have been told." I said giggling. "And, since I don't have any say in the matter, I would be happy to join you guys for dinner as well as attend the concert. It may be a nice change to my boring life. I thank you again."
"You're very welcome." They both said simultaneously.
We exchanged phone numbers and I promised Lance to keep his a secret. We talked a little while longer before I finally gave in to the exhaustion that was setting in.
"Well boys, I hate to end our little talk but I'm getting very very tired." I said yawning." Can we pick this conversation up tomorrow night?"
"Sure we can," Josh said. "We need to get going anyway."
"I'll call you tomorrow Cody with all the arrangements for dinner and such." Lance retorted.
"I look forward hearing from you." I replied with a smile.
Josh, again, got a solemn look on his face.
"Cody, I want to say again how sorry I am. I truly did not mean for this to happen."
"Josh, again I ask for you to please stop worrying about it. I'm fine and we will all have a good time at dinner tomorrow. I'm not mad I promise." I said that in the best upbeat tone I could muster, considering the war going on in my head still.
"Much Better!" Lance said with a wink. I just smiled.
"Thank you for saying that Cody," Josh replied. "It means a lot to me."
We said out goodbyes and they left. I closed my eyes and tried to fall asleep but the pain was too strong. I pressed the call button and Sylvia came in.
"You ok baby-boy?"
"No, I'm not." I said as tears started welling up in my eyes. "I can't stand that pain anymore."
"You bumped your head rather hard my dear." Sylvia replied "Ill give you something a little stronger to try and dull the pain some more, but you may just have to grit your teeth and bear it as much as you can. Ill be right back"
"Ok, I'll try. Hurry though." I said as a single tear streamed down my cheek.
Remembering what Lance said, I tried to find my beautiful, happy place. I tried to find that place that was uniquely mine, my own private happiness, but as hard as I tried, I could not find a thing or a place that did not have him in it. How could a guy that I have barley met affect me this much? What does this mean? Am I crazy? Am I falling for him? Is he gay? That was just way too many thoughts to process on my already bruised and battered mind. I pushed the questions aside and concentrated on my happy place.
Sylvia came back with some stronger drugs and I took them and lay back down to try and sleep. Sylvia said that she would be in every two hours to wake me up, and to just relax.
The first few hours of sleep I got were restless. I woke up often and then when I finally did get to sleep, Sylvia was waking me up. I tried not to let it make me cranky but no sleep makes Cody a bitter boy. Finally, towards the end of the evening, Sylvia came in to wake me up and let me know that Dr Edwards had come in while I was sleeping and determined that I was going to be fine. He still wanted me to stay there overnight but I could finally get a good nights rest without the two hour interruptions. I thanked Sylvia and rolled over to get some well needed sleep.
By that time the pain in my head and diminished to a dull roar. I closed my eyes and was immediately transported to my happy place. That place of course had Lance in it. What? There is nothing wrong with dreaming about a gorgeous man, and besides, if it makes the headache less painful, I say go with it. I was out like a light almost instantly. When I woke up the next morning it was 9 A.M. My headache was gone and as I rolled over to stretch and finish waking up I noticed a note on the stand next to my bed. I picked it up and it had my name on the front. I opened the folded paper and read what was inside:
Cody,
I hope you don't mind but I came back last night to check on you and make sure you were ok. You were sleeping soundly when I got here so I decided not to disturb you. I hope you had a good nights sleep and I will talk to you later tonight with the dinner plans.
Talk to you soon
Lance
My heart was once again racing out of my chest. I smiled and sighed heavily. He was here last night? He came back to check on me? I wonder how long he was here. What does this mean?
There were so many questions that I did not have answers to. I felt, however, that time would soon let me know exactly what I needed to know. I would have to what is impossible for me to do; wait patiently for those questions to be answered.
