One year later
I sat in the driver's seat of my car trembling. Matt was still inside our apartment looking for something. I knew that my parents and brothers would support our decision but it was still going to be an emotional conversation breaking the news to them. Finally Matt came out of the house and climbed into the passenger seat.
"You ready?" he asked after taking a deep sigh. We'd only bought the car a week before, which I thought was going to make this even more of a surprise for them. We actually bought two cars that week, two 2000 Oldsmobile Aleros, one black, one blue. It was the top-of-the-line model too, with leather seats and a V6 engine.
"Yeah." I replied with my gaze fixed on the speedometer. I turned the key and started the car and backed out as I normally did. My stomach was churning with nervousness. Thankfully it was only a five-minute drive. I made a left onto the main road and then it was just another minute before I made a right turn into my parents' subdivision. We pulled into the driveway and got out of the car and headed up to the front door.
My mom invited us in and we sat down at the kitchen table. I took a deep breath and let it out before I began speaking.
"Mom, Dad, it's really hard to tell you this but we're moving to California."
My mom sighed and my dad stared at his hands. I'd kept this plan under wraps and letting everyone know was the hardest part. Even when I moved to Michigan we were still close enough to make fairly frequent visits possible. Now we were going to be half the country away. Even though this was something we were genuinely excited about, it still stung that we were going to be so far away from everyone.
"Well son," my dad started.
"It's going to be hard without you but I'm happy for you two. The weather will be a lot better there, that's for sure," he said with a chuckle.
Over the next six months we made several trips to several places and ended up settling on a strategic location: Sacramento. I would be commuting to Minneapolis and we decided that with Matt's advanced degree, he could make a lot of money and have really good benefits working for the state. At that time it was one of the most affordable major cities in California. And there's also a large LGBT population there.
While we originally intended to rent, we ended up buying a house. We stopped for lunch at an Arby's in between apartment showings and right there by the door was one of those boxes that contained real estate listing pamphlets. There was a listing for a three-bedroom, two-bathroom house with about 1,400 square feet for $120,000.
We thought this house had to have been sold by now when we dialed the number in the ad. But as fate would have it it hadn't, and we decided to make an offer. They accepted without hesitation and we were homeowners before we even got back to Illinois. We received the keys the day before we flew back home and I had tears welling in my eyes as we looked at our new home in our rental car as we drove back to the hotel.
A couple weeks after we got back we started packing. We started by throwing away stuff we didn't need and then donating usable things to Goodwill. Then we did one room at a time and Within a week we had just about everything ready and in a few days our cars would be shipped to Sacramento.
As the days counted down until our move Matt and I really had to rely on each other emotionally. One evening about a week before we were supposed to leave I waited for him to come home from work because I felt vulnerable emotionally and I needed him. As soon as he came through the door I embraced him and kissed him hard. As soon as the door closed behind him I pushed off his coat and pulled his shirt over his head.
"What's the occasion?" Matt asked with that damn mischevious smile. We ripped our clothes off as we moved from the front door into our bedroom and I pushed him onto the bed.
"I need you right now," I whispered through gritted teeth. We flopped onto the bed and I grabbed the lube bottle and went to work.
"Stay right there," I said as he laid on his side.
I wanted to spoon with him because on the inside I was in pain over all the uncertainty. I reached down and guided myself inside him and he let out a soft moan. Instead of raw, intense fucking it was a gentle and cuddly type of sex. I buried my head into the pillow, wincing as my orgasm teased me. It was like my dick just couldn't decide whether or not it wanted to cum.
"Oh my god," Matt let out with a sigh as I thrusted back and forth. We were in a state of bliss and I wished that moment would never end. It felt like an eternity as we were doing it, but as soon as my cock let off a nuclear explosion, it felt like it was over in an instant.
"Fuck," I muttered as I rolled over onto my back.
"That was amazing," he replied.
Matt got up to go get in the shower and I got dressed and headed into the kitchen to get dinner started. Just as I shut off the water and lifted the pot to put it on the stove there was a knock at the door. We weren't expecting anyone and I was puzzled as to who it could be.
Bracing myself I walked across the living room and grabbed the knob. I took one more breath before I turned it and pulled the door slightly open. It was Sam. He looked really nervous and and was standing there rubbing his hands together.
"Sam," I said now feeling baffled.
"Take me with you."
"Huh?"
"Take me with you. To California."
"Okay, let's come inside," I instructed.
Now I was freightened. Sam isn't the most stable person in the world and I've known since he reached double digits that he probably has mental health issues. There were so many possibilities of how this conversation could go and they were all whizzing through my mind like bullets.
We sat down on the couch and I took a deep breath before I began.
"Tell me what you're thinking," I said calmly. My pilot training was aiding me in navigating this conversation.
"I just got out of college and I have nothing going for me here. I want to move to California with you guys so I can start a new adventure and still be near my brother," he explained.
"And what are you going to do when we get there?" I inquired.
"I'll get a job and an apartment and everything else I'm supposed to," he said with a hint of annoyance in his voice.
"Why?" I said, knowing his answer to this question would be the deciding factor in whether or not I was going to be okay with this.
"I...I want to find a man."
That one came right out of left field. I was not expecting that answer one bit. But I was confident at this point that he wanted to do this for the right reasons. I stood up and sighed.
"Okay, I think I'm okay with it. But you know we have to ask Matt first." He was still in the shower, blissfully unaware of what was taking place out in the living room.
"Wait right here," I said as I went into the bedroom to explain this to Matt before he ran into Sam outside. I walked back to the bedroom and closed the door. I sat down on the bed with my hands on my knees and took a deep breath. A couple minutes later I heard the water turn off and him step over the tub.
After he dried himself off he opened the door and he saw me sitting there on the bed.
"Who died?" he asked with a confused look on his face.
"Nobody but I need you to hear me out," I replied in a serious tone.
"Okay," he said confused.
"Sam's out in the living room. He wants to come with us to California. He's doing it for the right reasons though. He wants to go out there to start a new life and find a man and he doesn't want to be apart from us. I think that it's not a bad idea."
He sighed.
"I don't know."
"He can really help us out as we're getting settled. He's only going to be with us just long enough to get a job and get a place on his own. I honestly really want him there so we have someone besides just ourselves out there."
"I don't know," Matt said sounding worried. "Let me sleep on it. Is that okay?"
"Absolutely," I said. I went back into the living room where Sam sat looking like a defendant does waiting for the jury to decide his fate.
"He's going to sleep on it," I said as tone-free as I could.
"Did he say which way he's leaning?"
"No," I replied.
"So what now?" he asked.
"Go home," I said and he sighed in response, "and go to bed. I'll call you and tell you know when we decide."
It was a couple days before he decided. I gave him space and we decided we wouldn't discuss it until we'd had a couple days to process it. Finally the time came and feeling like a condemned man walking to his execution, I made my way to the dining room and sat down for the big conversation.
Matt went first and before he started speaking he let out a big sigh.
"I was honestly looking forward to it being just the two of us. But then I thought about when we first moved in together in Michigan and how hard it was to coordinate things and especially with you being gone all the time. I think it'll be good to have him around for a few months and hopefully by then he'll have a job and be on his own."
I flashed a big smile and came over to Matt's side of the table to give him a hug.
"I love you so much Matt," I said before I gave him a kiss.
"I love you too," he whispered in my ear as I got up to get the phone and give Sam the good news. I had never been happier in my entire life and I couldn't wait to embark on our new adventure.
Our last week in Illinois slowly crawled by and finally moving day came. Sam arrived in his car right as 7:00 AM rolled around, the time we were going to hit the road. The drive was 1,990 miles from door to door, not counting detours and stops. We took I-64 into St. Louis and then I-70 across Missouri to Kansas City. We then followed I-29 up ot to Nebraska. We took an hourlong jaunt on a state route until we met up with I-80 in Lincoln, which would take us the rest of the way to Sacramento.
We continued onto North Platte, where we stopped for the night. The next morning we got up early with the intention of making it to Salt Lake City before we stopped for the night. We bested that goal and made it all the way to Elko, Nevada. We left in the early morning again and by early afternoon we had arrived at our new home.
Once we arrived at 427 Tennessee Street we called the movers we'd arranged to come unload the truck and at least give our new home its framework. Sam walked through the house scouting out its layout while we waited for the movers to arrive. By night's end we had all the beds set up, the couch ready in the living room, and dinner ordered.
My parents called before they went to bed to let us know how proud they were of us and we all sat around for the rest of the night watching TV. For the first time in my life I felt truly happy. I was so excited for the future, for me and Matt, and for Sam. This really was a new adventure and I couldn't wait to see what was to come.
