Surprise Guest
Chapter Nine
As Jean finished preparing dinner, and Ralph was setting the table for the three men, Bob walked into the kitchen. His eyes were still a bit red, and he still looked tired, but not as tired as when he arrived.
Ralph looked at Jean, who nodded, then Ralph said, " Bob, I hope you know by now that we think of you as a special friend, almost a part of our family. No. You are a part of our family. So, we want to suggest that you come stay with us for a while. Going back to that apartment and all its memories has to be difficult, and we think you ought to be with us. What do you think?"
Bob thought for a while, then replied, "Ralph and Jean, I think you're right. When I walked in the front door after identifying Roy's body, I felt like I had walked into a tomb. All the time I was there, I couldn't stop crying. Everything in the rooms seemed to remind me of Roy. I couldn't take it any more. That's why I came here. You always are so welcoming, and you make me feel at home here."
"Good. That's settled," said Jean. "Let's eat."
Conversation came slowly to them, but they eventually began to talk, starting with Jean. "Bob, today Ralph and I went to examine my house-- my uncle's house it once was. We are going to make some changes while the fire damage is repaired. Two men who worked for my uncle told me about a contractor, Carlos Ramirez. Do you know anything about him?"
"He has an excellent reputation, is honest, hard-working, and fair pricing," Bob replied. "In fact, I have seen some houses he has built, and they looked darned good. Now would be a good time to contact him, because building is down, and he would probably be able to start at once."
The phone rang. Ralph answered, "Hello. This is Ralph Johansen." After a pause, he handed the phone to Jean and said, "It's Carlos Ramirez for you. You may want to take the cordless phone to the living room where it won't be noisy."
Jean took the phone with him to the living room. His soft voice did not carry well into the kitchen, but he soon returned and explained, "I've arranged to meet with Carlos tomorrow morning at my house at 8 a.m. Sorry, Ralph, it's going to be our house. Anyway, we'll look the house over, tell him what we want, and let him offer suggestions. He sounded pleased to be consulted."
"Bob, can you take a week of vacation, or some kind of leave, and stay with us?" Ralph asked.
"Yeah, I guess that's a good idea. My lease is about up on the apartment, and I don't want to stay there. Could I keep my clothes and uniforms here until I figure out where I'm going to live? I can store my furniture till I've found a place to live," Bob answered.
Jean spoke, "Ralph and I will be glad to have your handsome face...and body to look at every day."
After the dinner dishes were washed and put away, Jean brought coffee for three to the living room. Jean and Ralph sat on the sofa, on either side of Bob, their arms around him.
Bob began, "You know, I've never felt so much love before as I feel in this home. My dad always went out some place after work, and he didn't eat many dinners with us. My mother did her best, keeping house and a job to supplement what Dad brought home. After his bar bill, he didn't bring much money home."
"Things were always tight, and she felt the burden. She divorced him when I was ten years old. We didn't see much of him. One night the police came to tell us he had died in a traffic accident. I believe he was drunk and ran off the highway into something. Mom lasted until I graduated from high school, when she was diagnosed with cancer. She lasted only a few months. Since then I've been on my own. I never had any other family."
Both Ralph and Jean held Bob close as he began to cry again. Both caressed him and told him to let it all out. He was where he ought to be, and they were glad he was their friend.
A few minutes more, when Bob had stopped crying, Jean and Ralph took his hands and led him to the bedroom, stripped him, then themselves, and lay down on either side of him on the bed. They caressed him, spoke gently to him that he was where he belonged, and he could stay as long as he wanted. Soon he was asleep.
Ralph and Jean continued to caress Bob, looked over at each other and said softly, "I love you." Soon they fell asleep.
