David Fisher had more than what many men could ask for. He ran a successful funeral home, he had a hunky, loving African American partner (Keith), two thriving foster sons who melted his heart every time they called him "Dad", and an extended family that put the fun in dysfunctional, or funeral, or both.
But he was always worried he would screw things up. The more he worried, the more he felt himself losing control. He was a born worrier - his mother said he worried in the womb. When he wasn't worried about himself, he worried about the future of his partner and his family. He had a power of attorney and a will with Keith, they both adopted their sons, and they had recently registered as domestic partners. But those laws were always in danger of being undone. A lot of bad things had started happening to gay people and David wanted to try to make positive change. Keith was a registered Democrat, but David wasn't as loyal to a political party. When he was closeted he ran in more conservative circles. He'd given up on most of his conservative beliefs, but Republicans ran most of the country, so David began to wonder if he should go back to the party to try to help speak up for gay rights. The lure of getting some extra business for the mortuary didn't hurt either.
The Republican he was closest to at the moment was his sister Claire's ex-boyfriend, Ted. Ted was a charming, handsome young lawyer, with his lanky torso, sly smile, puppy dog eyes and close-cropped dark hair. He was also quite witty and direct. David thought he was very hot, but did his best not to let Ted know. Or Keith, for that matter.
Ted had befriended David because David was still close to Claire and Ted wanted to know why Claire had stopped calling him. David soon learned that Claire had a new artist boyfriend and had left Ted behind. Ted found David surprisingly witty and loyal and began to see him as more than just Claire's brother. When David told Ted he was thinking about attending the meeting for their county's Republican Party, Ted was supportive.
"We're a big-tent party," Ted assured David.
David wasn't as sure.
"I've done a lot of bad things," David half-spoke, half-whimpered.
David's big brown eyes flashed with pain and regret. Ted wondered just how much pain David had suffered in his life. The saddest part was that he could not honestly tell David he was wrong about the Republican Party. They could always use another member, and more money, but Ted decided to be honest.
"David, if you want to know the truth, you're right to be concerned. There are a lot of Republicans who don't agree with your lifestyle."
"It's not a lifestyle. I'm not Robin Leach," David sneered.
Ted weakly smiled. "Sorry. It's just an expression. As I said, I can't promise that everyone will accept you. And there may be a lot about our party you object to. But if you want to try, I promise you that I will help you however much I can."
David stared back at him impassively. He had such a haunted expression, as if he were remembering another life, a life before he met Keith and realized he was gay.
"Just promise that if they call me a fag or tell me I'm going to burn in hell, you'll stand up for me."
Ted squeezed David's shoulder.
"I'll be too busy kicking their teeth in to stand up for you, David."
And then they laughed. Nervous laughter, but the fear and awkwardness went away.
A few weeks later, David and Ted were on their way back from a fundraiser when it began to rain. They drove on for a half-hour or so, but when they almost ran off the road, they knew it was time to stop. Since it wasn't safe to park on the side of the road, they found a cheap motel nearby and checked until the storm cleared up.
Both men were soaked to the skin. As soon as they got inside, Ted slipped out of his jacket and began to unbutton his white dress shirt. David was surprised a straight man was willing to undress in front of him. Ted had such a fit, toned chest, with light coats of dark hair around his nipples and sprinkled across his abs.
"Do you want me to keep my clothes on?" David offered.
Ted snorted. "Yeah, I want you to get a cold and die so that Keith will beat my ass at your funeral."
David laughed. "Well, at least I'd get a discount. The perks of a funeral home owner." The laughter was a bit forced, to mask David's fear. He'd never been this close to any man but Keith since his carjacking a few years ago. Even now, after sitting in that car alone in such miserable weather, he was jumpy. The intimacy scared him. That's why he was so happy to have kids to raise, because it kept him away from being too alone with another man.
He began to shiver as he slipped out of his shirt. David himself had a great, compact body, broad shoulders and now that he had stopped waxing, fur-dusted pecs and a flat six-pack. Ted took his clothes while he dropped his own pants. David, somewhat apprehensively, took off his shoes and then his own pants.
While their clothes dried under a heat lamp, they both sat in separate chairs. The room was still too cool and David was beginning to chatter his teeth. Ted felt bad for him. David seemed more haunted than ever. David seemed so alone. Ted felt lonely himself. And cold.
When David's eyes began to mist up, Ted walked over to him. Wanting to know what was wrong.
"I just hate feeling so alone."
Ted wanted to let him know he was safe. He planned to squeeze David's shoulder, or pat his arm , but David soon took him in a full body hug. Their naked chests generating sparks as their strong bodies touched for the first time. Ted had been celibate ever since Claire left town. He didn't want another woman. He wanted to stay true to her.
Before Ted could think further, David rained kisses down upon his forehead, his eyelids, his nose, finally his mouth. Ted kissed back. The affection was all he thought of, not gender. David was so gentle to the touch, yet so much firmer than a woman. So in control. He let David sit him down in the chair and undo his pants, pull down his boxers. His slender, flaccid cock soon grew to a full erect 7 inches as David blew a hot breath onto his endowment, and cupped his low-hanging, hairy balls. He spread his legs wide as David deep-throated him. David did it almost immediately...he must have had great practice with Keith. Before Ted could even react, David had slid a finger into his sweaty crack. Ted moaned and shot a huge load down David's throat. He felt like he was flashing back through his entire life as spurt after spurt filled David's mouth, dribbled down his cheeks.
Finally, David stood up. Tears in his eyes.
"I'm so sorry," David cried. "What have i done?"
Ted wasn't sure what to say, but he couldn't stand to see David hate himself even more. He took David's head in his hands, and they shared their first kiss. Sweet, simple, their tongues comforting each other as they took off the other man's last few items of clothing.
Ted led David to the bed. He was going to make David see just how special he was.
