Author's Note:

Wow! I'm sorry for the long delay. But I sort of needed a break from writing. It gave me time to think about the story. I'm probably three chapters or so from the end of this story (I'm up to chapter 14). Then I begin the comic book or something.

I think this is one of my favorite stories. I hope it is as entertaining for you. Let me hear from you.

My heart filled thanks to John for his expert editing and also to Sara Bell (a fantastic author) for her encouragement and to the people who take the time to let me know they read and liked the story so far.

Chapter 9

It really bothered me the way that Mike, Simon’s brother, felt about me. Like anyone else, I wanted to be liked. I could understand someone objecting to me because of my being a vampire, because it’s an unknown, isn’t it?

There are a lot of old books about vampires, but everyone considered vampires a fictional beast, mostly of a demon-like quality. Rarely are there stories of vampires being good. Hence, until Vampire Boy, most considered vampires, and still do consider vampires, evil or bad.

Some even consider Vampire Boy to be an evil demonic creature, which I am certainly not. My point is that Mike doesn’t want to have anything to do with me because I’m gay. In this day and age it just doesn’t make sense.

Neither Peter nor I have ever hidden the fact that we were a couple.

As often happens when I’m troubled and in deep thought, Peter seemed to say the right thing.

“You know, Jon, he might be bi because historically people who are homophobic usually turn out to be bi or gay.”

“Huh? Oh, yeah. It’s just weird he’s the only one who has ever come right out and objected to my gayness and has shied away from me. Yet, he talks to you and there is no way he would not have known that you and I are gay. We’ve even held hands in public.”

There had to be something else, but what?

Simon decided not to come out to his parents about being a vampire. I think it was because there was something not right about the bank robbery, and we both felt it. However, he still wanted Peter and me to meet his parents, so we made a date to have dinner with his family on Saturday.

I spent my usual Saturday morning and afternoon at Dr. Clemens’ clinic as a volunteer. Doc told his patients that I was his Intern and that I would prep the patients for their exam. My “patients” were infants and young children.

I thought it was neat that everyone called me Doctor Greenwich, or doctor, including Doc, even though I was at least eight years away from really being a doctor.

I would take the infant or child to the examining room while the parent would fill out the forms. There I would take the child’s temperature, blood pressure, and pulse I would then give the child, as Doc called it, an anti-viral-biotic bite. It was similar to what I had done with Martin.

It was ten minutes before Peter would arrive and we’d leave for Simon’s, when Doc called me and asked me to join him in an examining room. I could tell by his voice that it was serious.

As I walked in I saw his patient, Andrew Maguire, a fifteen-year-old boy who went to the same school as I, but I had never met him. He wasn’t a bad looking kid, but he didn’t look too well either.

His parents were there and they looked pretty upset – the mother had been crying.

“This is Jonathan Greenwich. Although Jonathan is not a doctor yet he is my most able assistant, especially in treating seriously ill patients. Jonathan this is Mr. and Mrs. Maguire and their son Andrew.”

After the general polite greetings and handshakes Andrew commented, “I’ve seen you at school.”

I smiled not really knowing why I was there or how I should respond.

“The Maguire’s are personal friends of mine and I would like you to take Andy as a patient.”

I looked at Andy and then the parents.

“Why?” I asked.

“He’s dying,” said his mom, “and Doc said you have some special methods of healing that might save my son’s life.” She began crying, “I don’t care if you’re not a proper doctor. I don’t care if what you do is orthodox or not, I want my son to live.”

“One second,” I said politely, “I need to confer with Doc a moment.”

I pulled Doc out of the room.

“Doc, I can’t do this. He knows me from school. You told me it was important to keep my identity as Vampire Boy secret.”

“I know, Jonathan, I don’t want to see him die. But you’re right. Your secret is more important.”

We went back in to the examination room. I saw Andrew sitting on the table and his parents.

“Can you all leave me with Andy for a few minutes?” I asked. They left and I walked over to Andy.

“Do you want to live?” I asked.

“Yes,” he said softly.

“Do you have fainting spells?”

“Occasionally.”

I had heard how vampires were able to hypnotize their victims. I figured I’d try it.

“Look into my eyes,” I commanded in a soft calming voice. He complied. We stared at each other for a few minutes then he giggled.

“Sorry,” he giggled and blushed.

“It’s okay – let’s try it again. Look into my eyes.” He complied again. We stared into each others eyes and then I noticed he was slowly moving closer and closer.

“Jonathan,” he whispered, “I want to kiss you.” His eyes closed.

I had never even thought about kissing another boy.

“Relax,” I said softly as I move him into position. His eyes were closed his lips were beginning to pucker when I bit into his carotid artery and rapidly withdrew enough blood to make him faint almost instantly and I bit into his jugular and released my serum and the laid him down on the examining table.

I smiled. He had a hardon.

“Wow,” he whispered.

“See you at school and don’t be a stranger,” I smiled and left the room.

“Doc, run some tests on him Monday after school so we can gage his progress,” I said to Doc.

“Ma’am, sir, it been a pleasure meeting you. I’m hopeful that the treatments will work. Part of my agreement to do these treatments is that you do not discuss or question Andy about them. If I discover any violation I will discontinue treatment.

“Absolutely, agreed,” said both parents just as Peter entered the clinic. I winked at Doc who smiled.

“Cool. Now, my love is here and I must go. Later, Doc.”

Peter and I arrived at the Simon and Michael Larson’s home about a minute early. I had probably spoken less that a dozen words since we left Doc’s.

We were standing in front of the door and I was about to knock when the silence was broken. “You know it might not be hate. It might be love,” said Peter knowing that I had been thinking about Michael.

“That would be even worse.”

“Worse?”

“I would end up hurting him because I only love you. I don’t think I am capable of loving anyone else. Liking, yes. Loving, no.” I said as I knocked on the door.

I was surprised when I saw Michael opening the door.

“Hi!” he said as he shook Peter’s hand, “Come in. The living room is right this way.”

It was at that moment that I realized. Mike was in love. Not with me, but with Peter. Everything made sense now. Why he would talk with Peter and not me. Why he hated me being gay – it was because he liked Peter.

“Mom – Dad this is Peter Greenwich and Simon’s friend Jonathan,” said Mike.

“I didn’t catch you last name Jonathan,” said Mr. Larson.

“Greenwich. Jonathan Greenwich.”

“Are you brothers?” asked Mrs. Larson.

“Uh, yes and no. I had my name changed. We’re more like a couple,” I replied and got a glaring look from Mike and smiled to myself as I knew I was pushing Mike’s buttons.

I had smelt cat’s blood on his breath and decided to push him even further. “Is it me or do I smell cat’s blood.” I sniffed dramatically.

“Cats blood!” exclaimed Mrs. Larson.

“Yes, cats blood.”

Mike was red with embarrassment.

“It must just be me. I have a very sensitive olfactory system, you know I work at a clinic and it might just be a lingering smell.”

“Mikey, are you all right?” asked Mrs. Larson, “You look a bit flushed.”

“I’m fine, mom.”

Just at that moment I heard Simon yelling down from his room. “Jonathan, can you come here a minute, please.” I detected a lisp.

Mr. Larson smiled, “Go on. It’s fine.” He pulled me close to him and whispered in my ear, “I think he has a bit of a crush on you.”

As I entered the room and shut the door Simon turned around.

“Jonathan, what do I do? They won’t retract!” He immediately started crying.

I crossed the room and pulled him into a hug. “It’s going to be all right Simon. They do that sometimes in the beginning. Once my mom laughed when it happened to me – she said it’s sort of like Peter and his boners. Peter was in the room and he was so embarrassed. It made me laugh.”

He giggled a bit. “What do I do? My parents will hate me. Can I come and live with you?”

“Well, first of all, I doubt your parents will hate you. Secondly…” We were startled when Mrs. Larson’s voice interrupted.

“Simon, I could never hate you. I suspected you had a crush on Jonathan and it’s okay. You’re still our son. Gay, straight or whatever we love you.”

“Mom, please I’m not gay!” Simon cried as he hid his face by burying it into my chest.

“Son, it’s okay,” I heard Mr. Larson speak.

Simon grabbed me even tighter as he used me to shield himself from his parent’s view.

“Sir, ma’am, your son it not gay.”

“Then what’s wrong?” asked Mr. Larson asked in a concerned tone.

“You’ve heard of Vampire Boy?

“That’s all Simon talks about these days. Vampire Boy this. Vampire Boy that. I’ve heard he’s some kind of hero. We’ve heard the kids at school practically worship him. Even Mike says he thinks he’s pretty cool – and that’s saying a lot.”

“Yeah? Well, Mike is pretty cool too.”

“So what does this vampire boy have to do with Simon?” he asked.

“They are half brothers,” I said, “Same father, but different mothers.”

There was silence for a moment.

“What do you mean? What are you getting at?” ask Mrs. Larson.

“What he’s getting at Mom, is Mike and I and Jonathan are half brothers. We have the same father.”

“Oh.” said Mr. Larson. There was an uncomfortable silence before Mr Larson spoke,“Simon, you are right. I’m not your paternal father, but it doesn’t mean I don’t love you.”

“Oh? Even when I have these?” asked Simon as he moved so his parents could see his extended fangs.
