Gay

I was so excited on the way to the club. I was going to hear Nick sing, I could catch up with some of our friends who we didn't see that often, and I was on a natural high brought on by some sexual activity with my boyfri- um, with Pat. My dick had finally calmed down when we reached the club and I hopped out before Pat put the car in park. I couldn't wait to get inside. I started walking towards the door as everyone else got out and then I heard Pat say, "Slow down, Kyle."

I turned and looked at him, "Sorry, I'm just really excited tonight."

"In more ways than one." he smirked while looking at my groin area. I looked down and I didn't see anything. "Ha, made you look!" he laughed as he walked over to me. I heard Chris laugh too. Tonight would be the first real time I spent with Chris because his schedule always seemed to conflict with ours. Pat always raves about what a great guy Chris is, so I guess I'll see tonight.

I walked in the club with Pat's arm around me, just where it belonged. I looked around the place and I felt a pang of sadness when I realized that my group was on the opposite side of the room as Pat's friends. I guess it was understandable. Pat's friends were a different kind of breed than my friends. Pat's friends were the popular kids and my friends were just regular kids trying to stick together in fear of becoming outsiders. My friends smiled when they saw me and I pointed to the front row near Pat's friends. Matt shook his head no' but I gave him a look that said, move your ass, or I'll move it for you.' I watched for a moment as my friends gathered their stuff. Pat grabbed my hand and pulled me over to the area with his friends. Chris and Jessica sat on the row with Drew, Laurie, Valerie and Rachel, and Pat and I walked to the front row to claim our reserved seats. I was about to sit down in my seat when Matt grabbed me and pulled me to the side.

"Why do you want us to sit with your jock buddies?" he whispered.

I thought it was obvious that Pat and I were together, I mean come on, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see the way we look at each other and talk about each other and act with each other, plus everyone knows he's gay. If I weren't dating him and I noticed Pat hanging out with some new guy suddenly, I would assume they were secretly together unless I heard otherwise. "They're my friends, so play nice, plus you know Nick would want to see all of us on the front row."

"Those seats are reserved," Matt said pointing to the reserved signs on the chairs.

"They're reserved for you guys, you idiot! Nick and I didn't think you guys would make it on time so he reserved a few seats so he could see the people he loves in the front."

"So what's Pat doing there then?"

I wanted to say, `Because he's the person I love.' but my lips refused to let those words escape. "He's my friend and I wanted him to sit there."

"But he's gay." Matt whispered, making sure to put emphasis on gay.

"Yeah, and?" I asked a little annoyed with the path this conversation was taking.

"I don't want to be seen with him." he stated flatly.

"Everyone thinks Nick is gay, but you don't mind being seen with him." I countered.

"But I know he's not."

I couldn't believe what I was hearing. "So you wouldn't be friends with someone who was gay?"

"Of course not! Eww." he replied with a tiny grin on his face containing a small laugh.

"Wow, you're an asshole." I stated.

His grin vanished immediately. "What's your deal Kyle? First you start hanging out with those jocks, now you want to call me names!"

Most of me wanted to blurt out my secret and watch the stupid look that I knew would find its home on Matt's face, but part of me understood that the night was not about me. We were both there for Nick and that was how it should be. I reminded myself not to say anything to ruin the night. "Look, I didn't mean anything by it. I just think you're being a little childish. Let me introduce you to everyone and why don't you try to actually talk to them before you put them in a category and dismiss them."

"Whatever man" was all he said as he followed me back to the seats. Greta, Paul and Hope were already sitting when we walked over. I noticed that John had arrived too, and he was sitting next to Pat in the seat I just assumed I would be sitting in.

I walked over to Pat and John and said, "Well these are my friends." I pushed Matt a little in front of me. "This one here is Matt. Don't mind him, he's a little shy." My friends started laughing because they understood how untrue that was, so they got the joke. "And right over there," I said, pointing two seats down from John, "that's Greta, Paul and Hope."

"Wow, you really do have friends!" joked Pat. "I was beginning to think you and Nick were making them up."

"No, we do exist," said Matt as he walked to the open seat next to Greta.

I looked at the open seat next to Matt, hoping John would get the hint and move over, but he didn't. Instead, he smiled at me and said, "I'm not moving so you better take a seat." Pat gave me a look, and I just shrugged my shoulders and sat down between John and Matt. John leaned over and whispered in my ear. "Don't worry, I don't bite. Unless you want me to." He laughed and I punched him in the arm. A few minutes later, the show was starting.

Nick was adorable in his little `I'm a rocker with a pop star's heart outfit.' The crowd was a decent size and most of them seemed to enjoy Nick's songs. About fifteen minutes in to his set, Nick said, "This next song is, um, a little different from my others. It's about someone special to me, so work with me here. I'm um, I'm not going to cry, but uh, I may get a little teary-eyed. Okay, here we go." He put his guitar in position and started singing.

Daddy came home with a smile on his face And Mama made sure everything was always in its place But now she don't clean and I don't cry And we don't ask each other why Cause my daddy's gone and we're all alone It's just us two in our little home.

And she don't understand Why I won't hold her hand And she don't understand That I'm trying to become a man I know she did the best she could And if my daddy were here, he would have understood

Why she don't clean and I don't cry And we don't ask each other why Cause daddy's gone and we're all alone It's just us two in our little home.

They say don't dwell in the past But I know it's only the memories that last I remember him teaching me how to ride a bike And I remember him tucking me in at night I can still feel him pick me up and say everything will be alright If he were here he would understand

Why she don't clean and I don't cry And we don't ask each other why Cause daddy's gone and we're all alone It's just us two in our little home.

Three years I cried, after my father died But now the tears have all dried And I won't let another one fall Because he's gone and that's a fact And as a man, I must accept that But it still hurts

When she don't clean and I can't cry And we don't ask each other why Because daddy's gone and we're all alone And in my house, two people don't make it a home.

Nick had tears in his eyes, but he didn't let one fall. I knew he was lying about not crying, but I figured he was trying to be symbolic and right now he was trying to be strong. Hell, he probably was afraid Britney was there and he didn't want her to see him cry. He cleared his throat and started speaking, "Okay, this next one will be a little less depressing. I promise. And don't worry, it's the last song." He looked at me and winked. I smiled back at him. I watched as his eyes took a quick glance at my hand and I looked down to see what he was looking at. John was holding my hand. I looked at John and he had tears streaming down his face.

"I need to get out of here." With that he was up and running out the building. I wondered what was wrong with him, but I couldn't leave before the show was over. I turned to look at Drew and I mouthed, What's wrong with him?' He mouthed back, I don't know.'

When the show was over, I congratulated Nick on his performance and mingled for a few minutes before I tried to find out what was going on with John. I thought he ran outside to get some fresh air, but I went to check and he was gone, along with his car. I went inside and walked over to Drew, "I think something's wrong with John. He was crying and then he left. Shouldn't you go find him or something?"

"No need. He called and said he was at home and not

to worry."

"How can you not be worried when he had a breakdown?"

"Relax, it wasn't a breakdown. The song probably depressed him, that's all. Don't worry about it."

"But I am worried about it."

"Worried about what?" Pat questioned as he joined our conversation.

"John was crying, and he ran out of here and went

home. Don't you think someone should check on him?"

"Sure, I guess." Pat answered. "I was wondering what happened to him. I thought he had to take a shit or something."

"Well, I'm not checking on him. I have big plans for the afterparty," blurted Drew. I looked at him for a second, so he continued. "You're good friends with him now Kyle, why don't you go check on him since you're so worried?"

"Okay, let's see. His parents don't know me, it's late, he might not answer the door, and, oh, unlike you, I didn't drive myself here." I was trying my hardest not to sound snippy, but I was ticked off. How can you not go check on your best friend?

"Look, his parents aren't home, the time doesn't matter, he keeps the spare key under the mat at the front door, dumb, I know, but he does it, his bedroom is upstairs, um, it's the third door on your left, you can drive my car there and I'll bum a ride with Pat or someone, and you can meet us at Pat's house." He reached in his pocket and took out his keys, then handed them to me with a smile on his face.

"Um, is that okay with you Pat?" I asked turning my attention to my, um, friend.

"Sure, um, whatever. I'll see you later." He didn't even look at me when he said it, he just sort of focused on the air like there was something in it.

"Okay." I said. I walked off to find Nick and say goodbye and then I was on my way. I pulled up to John's house ten minutes later. I had only seen John's house from the outside before so part of me was looking forward to going inside. I parked Drew's car and walked to the front door. I went in and went upstairs and looked for the third door on the left. John had the door wide open, so I just walked in his room and sat on the bed next to him. He was laying flat on his bed with his face buried in a pillow, but he stiffened up as soon as I sat down.

"Go away Drew!" he yelled without even looking up. "I just want to be alone!"

"I'm not Drew," I said in the best soothing voice I

had.

He sat up quickly and looked at me. "What are you

doing here?" His face was red and stained with tears.

"I came to check on you."

"Well, I'm fine, so you can go now."

"You're not fine."

"Go away! I don't want you to see me like this!"

I didn't say anything. I just sat there staring at him for a few minutes. When he finally broke our stare and looked down, I asked him the million dollar question. "So what's wrong?"

"I am!" he shouted. "Nick feels like crap because he doesn't have a father and all I do is wish that my father would die. Nick would give anything to have his father back and I would give anything to give mine away. I hate him! My father, not Nick." I couldn't help but smile at his clarification.

"Why do you hate him?" I asked as I moved forward on the bed and reached out to touch John's shoulder.

"Because he's a horrible person, but I don't want to

talk about that."

"Yes you do," I told him.

"Maybe, you're right, but not tonight. Will you just hold me for a few minutes?"

"Huh?"

"Maybe you're right, but not tonight. Will you hold me for a few minutes?"

I heard his request the first time, but I had to make sure that was what I was hearing. "Sure, but no funny business." That warranted a small laugh from him that revealed his smile. "See you can smile." I said as I lied back on the bed and waited as he cuddled up in my arms.

"Thanks," I heard him whisper in to my chest.

"You're welcome," I replied as I put my arm around him and held him tight. I glanced at my watch and saw that it was only 11:00. I must have dozed off, because the next time I looked at my watch, it said 4:00 am. "Wake up," I said as I nudged John.

"Stop that, I'm already woke," came his groggy

response.

"We need to go to Pat's house."

"I don't want to go anywhere," he told me as he cuddled up to me even more.

"Come on, I know he didn't act like it last night, but I'm sure Drew is worried about you."

John sat up and reached in his pocket, pulling out his cell phone. He pushed some button and said, "He is." John handed me his cell phone.

"Woah, 10 calls from Drew?"

"Yep."

"Why didn't we hear the phone ring?"

"Because I turned the phone off after I called to tell him I was at home, I was okay, and I just wanted to be alone."

I reached in my pocket for my cell phone but it wasn't there. I figured it must have dropped out in the car. John and I both went to the bathroom and I realized that his house was just as nice as Pat's. I used the toilet while John used the other toilet and then went to the sink to wash his hands and clean his face. I watched him wash away the streaks left behind from his tears. I wanted to pry more in to why he hated his father, but I knew he would open up when he was ready so I didn't say anything.

I found my cell phone on the seat of Drew's car and I checked my messages. Pat had called me 5 times and his messages kept making less and less sense. His last message sounded a little angry, but he was slurring his words too much so I couldn't tell if he was serious of just out of it.

Most of the cars were gone when we reached Pat's house, so I guess the party ended early. The front door was open, which was to be expected because Pat knew I was coming and that some of his after, after party guest would need to get in and out and who wants to have to open the door a thousand times in one night? We stepped over a few people who apparently were too drunk to make it home. The house was a mess, there were beer bottles and liquor bottles and cups and crumbs from various snacks all over the floor.

I started hearing noises as I got closer to Pat's

room. I thought I heard moaning, so I assumed that Pat was watching some porno. John and I walked in to Pat's little livingroom area, but the television was off. We realized that the moaning was coming from Pat's bedroom. I walked over to open the door.

"Maybe you shouldn't do that," John warned.

"Please, he's just watching a porno, who cares!" I pushed the door open to Pat's bedroom. "I caught you!" I announced before I surveyed the scene. There, on Pat's bed, was a naked Pat and a naked Drew, and Drew was, was, it can't be! Drew was fucking my boyfriend! Pat and Drew both looked at me with shear terror on their faces. I could feel my heart falling to my feet. I couldn't catch my breath. "Oh." managed to slip from my lips as I turned around and nearly knocked John over. I shoved John out of my way and ran as fast as I could. I wanted to get as far away from that place as possible before my broken heart killed me.
