Rush – Chapter 1 – First Day
Don't you just hate it when you're the new guy at work? It's like, you switched high schools, you don't know anybody, and everyone just looks at you as if you're a freak. Well actually, I know some friends here in my new job, but we're in different floors and groups. I'm a software engineer and have been working for almost 6 years now (3 years in my previous job). I needed a change of scene, and the pay and benefits here are pretty good, so I decided to give it a shot.
So far it seems okay. My new teammates are kind enough to show me around, and they seem pretty approachable. The people here though seems stiff. Everyone's in formal attire. My previous jobs have been pretty casual, but I guess it's time for me to look more mature. I'm 27, turning 28 this year, and up until now, I've dressed in nothing but shirts and jeans. Look at me now! Mr. Long Sleeves and Slacks. I have to admit, I look dashing. Hehehe.
I was busy setting up my computer, until this cute guy comes to me. Great, I'm on my first day and I'm already checking out the guys.
“Hey, I'm Chi. We're supposed to move you to the tower 1, 33rd floor.”
“Hi, I'm Albert. Oh okay, I'll grab my monitor, keyboard and mouse. You can bring the rest.”
“No actually, that's our job, to carry all your stuff to your new workstation. We're from the Desk Support Team. Just shutdown your computer and you can follow me to 33.”
Seriously? Wow, how fancy. So I shutdown my computer, put my other stuffs in my bag then follow him. We don't talk on the way, as I'm not good on the small talk, plus I'm really shy around cute guys.
“So, first day on the job huh?” Chi asks.
“Yeah, yeah. Nobody told me I was gonna be moved though.”
“Sorry about that, but employees move around frequently. That's why we have a team dedicated to assisting you guys in moving around and setting up computers and phones.”
“I see... So how long have you been working here?”
At this point, we were about to enter the elevator to go to the 33rd floor, when his friend (seems like) comes out.
“Hey Chi! Do you need any help with that?”
I was stunned. Chi is appealing and manly, but this guy, is like my dream guy. He's a bit shorter than me (I'm 5'8”, he seems to be about 5'6”) with short, spiky, black hair. I like guys shorter than me. I always imagine myself hugging them from behind and putting my head on their shoulder, or cuddling on the couch. Ugh.
“Hi Russell, sure get some of this. Russell, this is Albert, we're on our way to 33.”
I was busy looking at Russell, that I didn't notice he was holding out his hand for me to shake. It was probably 5 seconds before I reacted. How embarassing.
“Oh hi Russell, I'm Albert. I'm new here.”
“Well welcome to Acquire!” Acquire's our company name (not really, but I'm not gonna tell you guys our real company name. Haha).
Shit, I've known Russell for 3 seconds and already I'm falling hard for him.
“Thanks, how long have you guys known each other?” I ask Russell.
“Oh we actually just met here in the company, we're both in the Desk Support Team.”
“Oh I see.”
“I'm actually a fresh graduate, and the company has this program where you can try out different teams for a year and then after that you can decide which team you want to stay in, or stay in Desk Support. I'll be finishing this April,” Russell explains. Today was February 25.
“That's pretty awesome! Do you have an idea on which team you want to stay in?” I ask him.
“Hmm I think I gonna join the DBA (database admin) team.”
Sweet, there's a possibility for us to work together then. “Cool, we might work together sometime. I'm a software engineer.”
He smiles at me, which he probably shouldn't have, because he has the cutest smile I've ever seen, and once again I'm stunned. “Yeah, maybe we might.” Russell suddenly punches Chi on the shoulder, jokingly. I didn't notice that Chi was rolling his eyes. Shit, I forgot that Chi was with us.
We finally reach the 33rd floor, I was only following them because I didn't know where my new workstation is. We seem to have reached it, because they set my stuff down.
“Uhm, have you requested for a Cisco phone yet?” Russell asks me.
“No, I didn't know. How do I do that?”
“You just go to our company website, there's a link there. I'll show you as soon as we set up your computer.”
Chi and Russell continued setting up my computer, attaching cords and stuff. Then Chi said to Russell, “Hey man, can you continue on this one? I have to get back and help the others.”
“Sure, I'll handle this, I still have to show him where to request for the phone.”
“Thanks Chi for your help, see you around!” I say to him.
“Sure thing man, see you.”
So now it was only me and Russell. Actually there are other people around us, but to me it was only the two of us. He seemed pretty focused on setting up my computer though, so I didn't bother him. I wanted to wipe the sweat that was forming on his brows. He finished after a couple more minutes.
“Can you start up and login? Then I can show you where to request for the phone.”
I am seated now, and he's standing beside me. I logged in and navigated to our website.
“Here's the Request Dashboard. Just find 'Request for a Cisco Phone' and fill up the details. I'll probably be the one who will order and bring it to you since I'm actually in charge of setting up phones for new employees. If you need anything else, you can message me or Chi in our internal messenger.”
“Thanks Russell! I hope I see you around.” Shit, am I being too forward?
“No problem, and yeah we'll probably see each other around.” And then he gave me his megawatt smile.
I was smiling the rest of the day. I can't believe that I like him this much already, and I barely know him. He seems nice and someone I can get along with. Damn, I don't even know if he's gay. I didn't get any gay vibes from him, nor did my gaydar go haywire, and I'm usually very perceptive about these things. I hate my life. Why do I always fall for the straight guys?
I logged on to our internal messenger and chatted up my friend (who referred me to this company).
Albert: Hey bitch! (I call 2 of my closest girl friends bitch. They call me bitch too.)
Lana: Hey you! How's your first day so far?
A: Pretty good, I got moved to 33rd floor tower 1. We're not in the same tower anymore (Lana's on tower 2)
L: Aww that sucks! We can still eat lunch together though.
A: Yeah sure... Uhm, do you know a guy named Russell?
L: From the Service Desk or Desk Support Team?
A: DST.
L: Yeah I know him, he's nice. Why do you ask?
A: Nothing... Hehehe.
L: Oh my God, don't tell me you're stalking guys here already? (Lana is one of few friends that know I'm gay)
A: SSSHHHHH!! They log instant messages here right?
L: Yeah but they don't read all of 'em. So? Do you like him?
A: Yeah he's totally my type. Got any dirt on him?
L: Yeah but you won't like it. I usually see him eating lunch with a girl, just the two of them. I've never seen them in a romantic situation like holding hands or anything, but they're really almost always together.
A: Damn, I knew it.
L: Sorry bitch. Anyway, ttyl. I have a lot of stuff to do.
A: Yeah yeah, me too, still have a lot of things to set up. Laters.
I spent the rest of the day setting up my workspace and requesting for different things (the Cisco phone and others). I was hoping to see Russell again, but it turns out that the request for the phone gets finished in like 5 working days, according to my teammates. Damn. I wonder when I'll see Russell again.
Author's Notes:
This is my second attempt at a story. I wasn't happy with my first one because things happened faster than I wanted them to, and I didn't like the names I gave to the characters haha. This story is also semi-autobiographical. Some happened in real life, some I wish happened. Anyway, I hope you guys like this one. This will be much slower, and definitely no sex right away, so if you're looking for a quickie, this ain't the story for you. I love hearing from readers!
