Running through Blind
Chapter 1
O fuck, thought Rhys as he raced down the stairs. He was late for school as usual. His mother waited patiently at the door holding a glass of juice and a piece of toast. Great start to the morning. Grabbing the toast they bustled out of the door and into their large, powerful, but highly environmentally unsound SUV.
"Whoopie doo, another day at school... how drole."
"Rhys if you hate school so much then why do you continue to go there. Who knows maybe you'd be happier at a public school?"
"Highly unlikely..." thought Rhys.
School was always "fun" to him. Learning was "cool". Or so the teachers thought. But then again, how exciting can parabolas, 20th century Canadian history and physics be. Straightening his tie, Rhys hoped out of the car. As usual he wore his blue blazer with his school pull over underneath. He sauntered into homeroom where he took his usual seat on the wall closest to the door. His face in his patented glum pragmatic no nonsense stare, he yanked his bag open and pulled out his physics binder to do some last minute cramming.
"Wheeeee, whoda thunk that velocity time graphs could be so exciting..." He muttered to himself
His homeroom advisor slipped a glance at Rhys. The boy who could be so vibrant and warm at times but just as cold and unresponsive too. He had seen him laugh and speak gaily. But now he was silent. Staring blankly at a binder filled with scrawls and diagrams. The teacher turned to read the announcements and finish attendance.
Kyle pushed his messy top of hair out of his eyes. He sat quietly in his chair in introspection. His blue eyes scanning the room. Looking at the jocks to one side. The stupid nerd infront of him who was so eager to please and kiss any teachers ass. The smart but slightly naive boy to his left who always seemed to have a smile, and Rhys. Who was looking at a book as though it were filled with Hieroglyphics. Weird kid that one. slightly gay too. He peered a little longer at the boy to his right. Always so quiet. Not really to popular. Does pretty well in his work. Involved but not overly. He looked at his eyes which were peering from behind his glasses. They say that the eyes are the window to ones soul. And Rhys eyes seemed to glisten a silvery tinge from this angle. So unresponsive. Like a reptile. Rhys heard something. His head shot up from his books.
He was glaring now. Muttering to himself in anger. Probably something he heard in the announcements. You never really could tell in this school. Everyone packing and crawling over each other trying to get one up on each other. Pulling his gaze off of Rhys Kyle half heartedly listened to some joke. He chuckled...
"Fuck, O my God" Rhys fumed as he remembered what he had forgotten to do. " maybe I can still phone him today, fuck it I'll see him soon enough he thought."
the school bell rings
walking out of the class he storms to his next class. Physics. yay. A barrel of both laughs and self inflicted pain. The teacher was a greasy prick who looked like a push over, but was really some arrogant bastard who just couldn't speak very well. Taking his usual seat at the bench, Rhys took out his books and sorted himself. The morning grind had begun.
the teacher walks in, his hair slicked back, greasy as usual. Rhys cringed as he looked at his teachers hair. With the usual small talk and hullos they began. The usual stuff was covered, they were assigned some questions and Rhys settled into do some math homework. No need to fuck around over something I'm failing, he thought. Mr. Glenn, the teacher quickly advanced upon Rhys. Glaring at him he screamed,
"What are you doing!!! I give you this time in class and you screw around doing another class's work. I would have expected more for you. This is very disappointing. Do you have an explanation Rhys???"
Rhys maintained a defiant look but remained silent. His teacher stood his ground, glaring at the grey eyes before him. Finally he looked away.
"You can see me after class Rhys..." And quickly returned to the front.
"Ooo, you are so screwed, or fucked should I say." Sneered the kid beside him.
Rhys refused to acknowledge him and continued on back to his math, Fuck Mr. Glenn
With his work being done and the bell having gone, Rhys lingered in his seat as the class filtered out for break. Mr. Glenn stood at the front finishing up some marking. Finally he stood up and beckoned for Rhys to approach him.
"Mr. Cary, you are an exemplary student in this school, yet you persist in mocking this entire class with your sullen attitude and your disregard and respect for me. What have you to say? Nothing as usual I would presume. I don't understand this. I know you are capable at doing well in this course yet you keep on sabotaging yourself by making half-assed attempts at the labs and asserting yourself. This is no laughing matter. You must truly smarten up! Why are you doing this. I still cannot understand. Please explain it to me... Yet again no response. Well Rhys, I can't help you if you won't allow me, just leave. There is nothing more to say."
"Thank you sir" was rhy's only response as he left the room. Mr. Glenn sorted out his papers and closed his briefcase as he left the room as well.
Kyle had just finished painting some art piece as he walked down the hall. Walking opposite to him was Rhys.
"Hey, Rhys is it? Kyle" he said extending out his hand
"Hullo Kyle. How may I help you?"
Rhys maintained his stride as he continued towards his next class. Still cold and emotionless.
"Just wonder how your doing. Never really talked is all. Its nice to talk don't ya think?"
"Sure, I guess."
"I was just wonderin you know, like you're a really smart kid and all and like people don't really know you so I thought I'd you know, say hullo. Sorry I'm blabbering I tend to do that"
"How sweet. I'll be sure to remove you from my hit list..." Rhys commented dryly
"Uhhhh yeah... I guess I'll be seeing you then." Kyle began to rush off
"Wait I'm sorry, that was rude. Its just that people normally don't talk to me. I try to not talk to them. It's a win win situation. I'm just not very good at this whole small talk thing. Not really my thing. Well people aren't really my thing and I'm just kinda blabbering here so feel free to stop me..."
Rhys stopped... he was a little flush and uncertain why he had jsut said all of that.
"... Yeah. I do that too sometimes. Don't mention it. Its not that big of a deal. "
the bell rings. Break is over.
"Well I gotta go. Talk to you later Rhys!" Kyle said with a smile.
Rhys smiled slightly. It was the first time Kyle had ever seen him smile. It was nice.
"See ya" Rhys said softly.
Kyle and Rhys walked away in separate directions. Towards their next classes.
All through math, Kyle thought of Rhys. Why was he so sad. And reclusive. Its not like he's annoying or anything. Kyle plodded along through his work. But he couldn't get the image of Rhy's smile out of his head. What's with this.
"God I hate polynomials!" Throwing down his pencil in frustration.
Kevin nudged Kyle. "You ok man? Seem a bit frustrated."
"Gosh, your sharp today" Kevin smirked, "thats me alright. So you gonna tell me what's up buddy. Girl troubles or just in need of busting a nut?"
"Ummm something like that yeah... Maybe just not as eloquently as you stated it."
"Well you know me, I'm a master debater."
"Don't make me puke... LAME!!!"
By this time, the teacher was glaring at them and the boys returned to their work.
The next period past by uneventfully for Rhys and he was relieved to finally hear the bell for lunch go off. He walked out of his last class towards his locker. Partially weighed down by his bag. Opening his locker he had a bit of trouble pushing his bag in. Finally after taking out a couple textbooks and binders,, he managed to jam the bag in and hung it on a hook. after closing the locker and locking it up he heard a sharp Bang.
"Fuck, not again this is the third hook I've broken. God damn"
Kyle walked up behind Rhys. "You look a little stressed? Doing alright."
"Yeah sure, no problem." Rhys looked away and walked towards the stairs to the cafeteria.
"Hey wait. Why is it that I'm always running after you. Moreover why do you always run???"
"Weren't you paying attention to my little babble this morning." Again Rhys smiled lightly
"Yeah well I guess I'll need some refreshing. Going to have lunch now?" Kyle smirked
"I guess I could do with some food. Hungry?"
"Famished!"
"Been reviewing for SATs is see..."
"Or just smarter than you average bear!"
"O god... Yogi bear was overrated. And his little side kick wasn't very appealing either."
"Shut-up, Yogi owned and continues to own!"
"Sure. Why not."
"To lunch we go!"
" I don't know why your so excited its chile con carne day."
"Do you have to be so moody, PMS much." Punching Rhys on the shoulder Kyle dashed off ahead
"What!!! low blow. I'll have you know the cramps are unbearable" shouted Rhys as he ran to catch up.
