Note from the author

This is the continuing story of Robert and Johnny, who first appeared in my short series: My 11th Summer. Although intended to be a simple stand alone short series, My 11th Summer was so popular, not only with my readers, but myself, that I decided to continue the saga in Tween to Teen. And now, as the boys finish High School and move on to College and their adult life, the final part of the saga begins. So, for those who have been following the story from the beginning, here is part 3 of the trilogy, which I am calling: Robert and Johnny-The rest of the story. Enjoy.

Chapter 41

More surprises

We had a great time the next few days, going to the Zoo, Bell's Amusement Park, eating out, going swimming, and of course shopping for the twins at Kmart and other stores there in the city.

The twins were so excited to get new clothes and shoes and it made me sort of sad to think what kind of life these kids had had up till now. I knew what we were giving them was temporary, but I was sure they would never forget it, and...hopefully it would encourage them to work hard and someday build a better life for themselves.

Zeke was as happy as a bee in clover with his little brother and sis with him, and true to his word he was very good at handling them. He made sure they bathed regularly (something else new to them), that they brushed their teeth, and combed their hair, and most of all that they behaved themselves. Not that they were bad kids, but they were feisty and full of life and sometimes a bit hyper.

Bill and Peter were a big help as well, keeping all three of the kids occupied at times to give Johnny and me a break. A couple times we even took Bill and Peter with us, including to Bell's Amusement Park, and they were a big help in keeping the younger kids under control.

The weekend finally came and we had surprise visitors, Gerald and his wife Sherry and their adopted son, Lam, who was a big hit with the kids as well. The happy couple had good news to share also, Sherry was expecting.

I think we were almost as excited as those two were, but I sensed Lam had mixed feelings about the blessed upcoming event. Later I vowed to get him aside and find out what was going on with him.

We had a BBQ that night, the whole gang including Bill and Peter and his sister and mother. We were all friends by now and the twins were a big hit with Sherry and Gerald as well.

We'd all eaten ourselves into a stupor by 8 o'clock and were just sitting around shooting the bull when I noticed Lam go into the house, I figured to use the bathroom.

Excusing myself I followed him, but no one seemed to take notice, except Johnny who always knew what I was up to. He gave me a reassuring smile and I returned it, adding a wink and blowing him a kiss.

I had planned on waiting in the kitchen for Lam to do his business, but when I entered the house I found him sitting at the dining room table looking sullen and sad.

"Hey," I said, "you okay, buddy."

He shrugged, "I don't know. What will I do when the baby comes and they don't want me anymore?"

So that was it, he felt like Gerald and Sherry were looking to replace him. I pulled out a chair and sat next to him, daring to lay my hand on his shoulder and pull him into a hug.

"Lam, this baby will need a big brother, and that's you. Don't think of the baby as your replacement, think of him or her as a addition to your wonderful family. Your mom and dad will love you just as much as they do now, only there will be more love to share with this little one coming into the family. Trust me, I know," I said thinking of Mikey, my little brother, and how wonderful it had been when he was born. However, unlike Lam, I had never thought of Mikey as competition, probably because I was older and more mature and understood these things better. Not to mention that I wasn't adopted and had known the love of my parents all those years and knew I would still have that love.

"I don't know. I am worried, Robert. What if they do not want me? I am not a baby, and I am not their...blood, you know?"

"No, but that does not mean they can't love you. Have they not shown you how much they love you since you were adopted? And Gerald turned over Hell and earth to find you and bring you here. Have you forgotten that? They chose you to be their son and no one will replace you. Be happy for them, and for yourself. Having a brother or sister is a wonderful thing, I promise."

"I hope so," Lam said still sounding unsure.

"I know so," I said smiling and giving him another hug, "I promise you you will love that little baby as much as you love Gerald and Sherry, and they will love you both equally."

We talked a bit longer and I think he felt some better by the time we rejoined the others. Gerald looked up when he saw us approach and gave me a questioning look and I came over to sit by him while Lam joined the other kids on the lawn, where they were engaged in a spirited gave of tag.

"Can we talk?" I said, but without waiting for an answer I launched into the discussion Lam and I had just had.

"Oh my God, that poor child," Sherry said looking ready to cry, "we never thought how this would affect him. Oh, Gerald, we need to talk to him and make sure he understands that we still love him and that he is our son, no matter how many other children we have."

"Whoa, how many kids are you planning on?" Gerald teased, then he turned serious, "I guess we just assumed that he'd be as happy as we were. Thanks, Robert, for talking to him, and now that we know how he feels we'll do our best to make sure he doesn't feel like he's losing us. Poor kid."

"Maybe the two of you can have a guy's night out or something," Sherry suggested.

"Yeah, that sounds like a good idea, but I think we should both talk to him when we get home."

"Of course, dear," Sherry said giving Gerald a kiss on the cheek.

"So...umm, is this kid gonna need a godfather or anything?" I asked, then blushed.

Gerald chuckled, "Yeah, in fact he needs two, know anyone?"

We all laughed then and Johnny soon joined us and we talked about babies and kids and families and happy stuff for the rest of the evening.

*****

On Sunday we had more visitors, this time mom, dad, and Mikey. Mikey was his usual ball of fun and energy and the twins took to him right away. I swear my little brother shot up an inch or two every time we were apart any length of time, and I felt a little sad that he was growing up so fast.

I think I know how mom and dad felt now as they watched me grow up and why they decided to have Mikey so they could prolong their parenting years a bit further. I smiled as I watched Mikey interact with the others and I saw a lot of myself in him. I'd never had trouble making friends, and the ones I called my close friends were like family to me. Johnny, of course being the closest of all, and eventually becoming my boyfriend-lover.

Mom was as excited about Gerald and Sherry's news as we had been, but even more excited by the twins, especially Charlotte.

It was no secret that mom had always wanted a daughter, but of course that didn't keep her from loving her sons as much as any mother could. I could kind of understand her desire, a father desired sons to carry on his name and to mold in his image, so why shouldn't a mother desire to do the same with a daughter?

Charlotte took to mom, too, and I discretely took some photos of the two interacting, mom's eyes lighting up as she held the little girl on her lap.

Dad seemed to notice mom's infatuation with Charlotte as well, and when he finally got me and Johnny aside he was quick to comment about it.

"Your mom has always wanted a girl," he said softly, "and seeing her with that little one makes me feel sad for her."

"She's fine, dad. She loves Mikey, and she loves you, and she's happy with life the way it is."

"I know, but I just wish..." he said staring off into the distance, "anyway, how are things going, boys?"

We invited mom and dad to stay for supper, but dad had to work the next day and wanted to get back home. Mom, however, looked disappointed, as did Charlotte, who begged her to stay.

I could see that dad was about to give in when I suddenly had a wonderful idea. We had the twins for another week, so...why not send Charlotte home with mom for a few days?

I know, I should have discussed it with the adults first, but I'm an impulsive person, and instead I just blurted out the idea. However, in this instance I was right. Mom was beaming, Charlotte was jumping up and down with joy, and dad even seemed happy with the idea. Mikey seemed happiest of all, since he'd have a live-in playmate for the next few days he could hardly wait to introduce her to Snoopy.

I wondered how Joe and Zeke would feel about, but they just seemed to be happy for Charlotte and so, after packing a few things for her stay, we walked the four to the car and lingered a bit while we said goodbyes and made our plans to pick Charlotte up later in the week.

We waved goodbye as they drove away, and I noticed Joe seemed a bit more subdued than he had earlier. I'd heard that twins were more attached to each other than regular siblings and I wondered if that was the case here. Did Joe feel like a part of him was missing when his twin wasn't around?

I asked Zeke about that later and he said they were very close and that Joe would probably miss his sister a little at first, but that once he got used to things he'd be fine. Anyway, it was only for a few days.

We were exhausted by the time we finally got dinner over and after a quick shower, Johnny and I settle onto the couch to watch some TV while Zeke and Joe hung out in Zeke's room. I heard the shower running later and eventually two clean boys, dressed only in their underwear, joined us on the couch.

I chuckled when I saw their state of dress, but now that it was just us guys, I guess they felt a bit more relaxed. Neither Johnny nor I mentioned it, for once we'd done the same thing, and often still did, when we were alone. It was no big deal, natural, and normal, and as they say, boys will be boys.

Joe fell asleep with his head in Zek's lap, and Johnny carried him to Zeke's bed, which he'd been sharing since their arrival. Charlotte had been sleeping in the spare bedroom, but I had no doubts that Joe would want to continue sleeping with Zeke, even while she was gone.

Zeke joined us after using the bathroom and we tucked him in as well, administering kisses to both boys' foreheads before heading to our own room.

We'd worried that we weren't prepared to raise a son, but once Zeke had arrived we'd taken to it like ducks to water, as my dad would say, and even adding the twins to the mix hadn't caused any major problems. Of course the twins were temporary, but I think we both felt like we could handle three kids as easily as one, especially when the oldest shared the responsibilities with us. Zeke was a natural when it came to handling kids, and I hoped that someday, he'd fall in love and have a family of his own. I smiled at the thought. Would that make us grandparents? Well, we were too young to be grandparents right now, and that was a long ways off, so for now I'd settle for being dad, or pop, or whatever name Zeke chose for me.

****

We finally heard from Mrs. Snyder again the following Monday. I'd called her the day after we'd arrived home and told her it was fine to call anytime and to reverse the charges. She'd held off as long as possible but she finally called to share some news that she thought we should hear.

The news wasn't good, in fact it was disturbing. Her husband had taken the two older kids and moved to Kentucky to stay with his brother, and had sold the farm out from under her without her getting any say so in the matter or any of the money from the sale. Granted, it hadn't been much, around five thousand dollars, but legally half of that was hers, especially since she had two young children to provide for.

She was temporarily staying with her sister, but she knew she couldn't stay there forever. She knew she needed to find a job, but jobs were scarce and since she had not worked since she was a teenager she had no work history or references to help her find one. She had considered going to work at one of the many chicken processing plants in the area, but poor working conditions, low pay, and the location of the facilities, made this a last resort.

I told her not to worry about the twins for now and to concentrate on her own needs, and that we'd try to think of some way to help. She seemed fine with Charlotte spending time with my mom, though she did say that she missed the twins terribly. I assured her that they missed her too, and that somehow we'd make sure they were united and soon.

When she hung up I hoped that she felt some better, but I, on the other hand, felt worse. I filled Johnny in on the details, but I wanted to wait till later to lay this troubling news on the brothers. I worried most of all about Zeke's reaction, but I knew it would be hard on Joe as well. However, Joe and his sister had been through a lot and were very resilient, and I knew they'd adjust to whatever their new situation was. Zeke, however, being the sensitive soul that he was, and caring as he did for his mother and siblings, would experience a myriad of emotions, the least of which would be anger. He already hated his father and had a deep distain for his older siblings, and I knew this was going to be hard on him.

I called mom after talking to Johnny and she was as concerned as I was, maybe even more so. In just the short time she'd had Charlotte with her, she'd fallen in love with the little cutie and she could not imagine her own father forsaking her that way.

As always though, mom was calm and thoughtful in her analysis of the situation and offered to help in any way she could. We kicked around some ideas and finally mom said she needed to talk to dad, but that she might have a solution to the situation. I knew not to nag her, but I was curious about what she had in mind. I hung up with all sorts of scenarios running through my head, but fortunately I didn't have to wait long to hear mom's plan.

Meanwhile, Zeke and Joe had returned from a day spent with the boys next door and were tired, thirsty and hungry. I was surprised that Peter and Bill weren't with them, but they explained that the two were having dinner with their mom and sister and a friend of their mom, named Larry.

I wondered if Larry was just a friend or a 'friend', but I'd never heard her talk about any love interests in her life, so I dismissed it. Anyway, I had more pressing matters to consider.

After giving the two boys a snack and a cold drink, Johnny and I sat down with them at the table and two sets of eyes turned to us with concern.

"What's wrong?" Zeke asked, pausing mid-bite of his cookie.

"We got a call from your mom today..."

As expected Zeke was upset. Anger, fear, hatred, sadness, and finally despair overwhelmed him and the tears finally came. Joe, for his part, was pretty calm, that was until Zeke broke down, then his tears came too. Hugging one another, they cried, their sobs of anguish breaking my heart and that of Johnny's as well.

We moved them to the couch where we sat in a group hug while they cried it out and then we wiped away the tears, theirs and ours, and began discussing what the future might bring.

"Don't worry, no matter what, your mom and the twins will be taken care of," I promised, "and, Zeke, you will always have a home here with me and Johnny."

"That...that man," Zeke said, his anger returning now, "he's never been a good daddy, never!"

"He's mean," Joe pouted, "I hate him."

"Poor momma," Zeke said, a slight hitch in his voice, "that skunk ain't never treated her right. And now, selling off the farm and all. How did he do that so quick? I wonder. He must've had that planned all along."

"I hadn't thought of that," I said suddenly realizing just how fast things had changed, "I wonder if your momma suspected something was about to happen, and that's why she left when she did."

"I don't know. Is momma okay?" Zeke asked with concern.

"She's fine, your aunt and uncle are taking good care of her."

He looked skeptical, perhaps because he knew his aunt and uncle better than I ever would, but he seemed to accept my assurances.

The phone ringing interrupted us and I reached over and grabbed up the receiver on the third ring. It was mom.

I listened as she revealed her plan and I nodded my agreement, all the while avoiding the eyes of the other three.

"So, you're sure about this. Dad is sure about this. Heck, Mikey is sure about this? Okay, of course it's fine with us. We're doing just fine as we are, and I know you're enjoying Charlotte's company. Shall I call her, or do you want to? Yeah, that's probably best, but be sure to let me know as soon as you find out what she says? Okay, mom, I love you. Tell dad I love him too...and Mikey. Yes, take care...bye bye."

"Well?" Johnny said impatiently as Zeke and Joe stared at me with a befuddled look.

So, I told them the plan.

On Wednesday of that week, Johnny, Zeke, Joe and I loaded up the Bug Bus and headed to Pryor. Zeke and Joe were bubbling over with happiness and excitement and I had a warm happy feeling in my tummy as well. In less than an hour the brothers and sister would be united with each other, and...with their mom.

The plan was simple, Mrs. Snyder and Charlotte would share my old room and Joe would stay with us till Mrs. Snyder found a job and a place of her own, hopefully before school started in September.

I had a few reservations at first, number one: giving up my room at my folks' house, and two: the fear that Zeke would want to move in with his mom and the twins once they were settled. I need not have worried about that, however, Zeke made it clear from the beginning that he loved us and wanted to be our son.

That day was a joyous celebration of love, and family, and hope. Eventually Mrs. Snyder would land a good paying job, rent a house near mom and dad, and her and the twins would be frequent visitors in their house, as well as ours. Mom and Mrs. Snyder became good friends, and though mom didn't exactly get the daughter she'd always wanted full time, she was happy to spend as much time with Charlotte as possible.

Mikey, sweetheart that he is, adjusted well to the whole situation, though he did admit he was glad when the girls moved out and he didn't have to worry about sharing a bathroom with them or being caught in just his underwear. We enjoyed having Joe live with us as well, but it was kind of nice when things went back to normal and it was just us three guys in the house once more. I might also add, that because Mikey already had a Joe in his life, his cousin, he started calling his new Joe, Joey and it stuck.
